How to have safe sex if you have a latex allergy

Before becoming a full-time shopper she worked in administration in the medical industry. </li><li>Harwick said in the first two months of the <keyword id="8829783" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus-pandemic">coronavirus pandemic</keyword> she had "no idle time," with a flurry of orders rushing in hourly. </li><li>This is her story, as told to freelance writer Meira Gebel.</li></ul>I started delivering groceries for Instacart four years ago, after a former coworker told me about how he was making extra money on the side. Previously I worked in administration in the medical field. I decided to leave my job and do something fun where I could make a comfortable living, and I've always loved grocery shopping. This also has given me a chance to meet new people and serve others.I am 61, so I am not as young as many of the Instacart shoppers right now. I consider myself a seasoned shopper — I like to take my time and make sure everything in a customer's order is correct, so that no eggs are broken and no bananas are bruised. I don't like to rush through the store.The application process is unlike anything I was ever familiar with. You have an interview with someone over the phone, you have a background check, but you never meet anyone in person. <div type="image" title="Kathy Harwick" height="521" width="695" msid="78954211" hostid="261"></div>It took about three weeks from my first initial interview until my first day shopping. There was no in-person training; instead, we were given instructional videos to watch about how to weigh groceries, select items, and use the app. On your first order you try to take small batches just to get the hang of it. Like other gig workers, Instacart shoppers are not Instacart employees — we are independent contractors and get paid through Instacart-owned Maplebear Inc. We get paid per order, not hourly, and the amount you can earn from one order to another frequently changes depending on size.<h2>I work five days a week, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Unlike some Instacart shoppers, I don't like to work 14-hour days. </h2>I wake up around 7 a.m. every day and turn on my phone to see if any stores in my area have orders ready to go. I try to be out of the door by 8 a.m. I make sure to select and pick up my first order of the day from the closest store in my zone (a logistical geographical region) to my home. I shop and deliver groceries from five main stores in my zone [of] west Portland: New Seasons, Fred Meyer, Safeway, Albertsons, and Quality Food Center. Instacart's algorithm works so that the more time you put in that you are available to shop, the more orders you will receive. You will also be at the top of the list when a new order comes in. If you mark that you are unavailable one day, you will get a ding and get placed at the bottom the next time you are available. Most gig work is like this and runs on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walmart-delivery-driver-pay-day-in-life-what-its-like-2020-10">a round-robin algorithm</a>. I used to drive for Lyft, so the structure is familiar to me. After I receive an order, I drive to the store and do the shopping. We are timed on our orders. If we have ten items in an order, Instacart allots us about one minute of shopping time per item. If an item is unavailable, we are supposed to mark it as unavailable on the app, alerting the customer of another similar item. Sometimes the items the app suggests are not similar. I like to call customers or send a picture of the items around the missing item to see what they would prefer to avoid texting back and forth. We can control how long it takes us to shop, but we can't control how long it takes to check out, which cuts into our time. I like to bag the groceries myself because I like things to be orderly. Vegetables with vegetables, that sort of thing. I then drive and drop off the customer's order to their doorstep. I would say I drop off deliveries at about 15 houses or businesses in a single day. Before the pandemic, I was able to meet customers and have conversations and get to know them. Some still see my name on the delivery and send me a note saying they were happy I was doing their order. In the four years I've been shopping for Instacart, I've averaged 25,000 to 30,000 miles on my Kia Optima just delivering groceries in west Portland.<h2>As a five-star shopper — meaning I have an average of 5-star customer reviews — I try to make no less than $20 to $25 an hour because I don't want to push myself too hard and get hurt. I aim for $1,000 a week, but try to not make less than $750.</h2>For me, the incentives Instacart offers are not worth it. Say there is a $65 incentive to do five batches (multiple orders within one job) within a certain timeframe. I know I am going to do five batches, but I won't get paid an extra $65. I'll make $50 from the orders and Instacart will give me $15 extra. The pay has gone down considerably since I started working for Instacart four years ago. When I started delivering groceries in west Portland, there were 64 other shoppers. Now there are 800. At the beginning of the pandemic, there were nearly 1,000 Instacart shoppers in my zone. Probably because people were out of work and looking for additional income. The number of shoppers has gone down since the state reopened in June, because people maybe are back at work, or didn't like being a shopper. <h2>During the spring months of the coronavirus pandemic, my car was like a medical supply store. I didn't stop working, so I made sure to have ample disposable masks, hand sanitizer and disinfectant. </h2>I also carried bottles of water, tissues, and gloves. On the Instacart app we are required to take and log our temperature for the day and report whether or not we were experiencing symptoms before we start delivering. Instacart sent out packages of PPE, but I didn't request one because at that point in the pandemic many of the shoppers had already purchased their own supplies. It was a little too late. Those first two months of the pandemic, there was no idle time. We were in such high demand. There were so many orders. Sometimes, before the pandemic, you could sit in your car before a new batch came in and rest, but during March and April we had no time to rest. I never felt afraid of getting sick, because I trusted the precautions I was taking. I knew it was important to do this job during this scary time, because a lot of our customers are seniors and single moms who may not have the time or opportunity to go to the grocery store. I made more money in those first two months of the pandemic than I ever had working for Instacart. We were making good money, but we aren't making that kind of money anymore. Maybe it will pick back up in the winter, when the weather gets worse, but I don't know. <h2>My overall experience working for Instacart has been great, but it does take a toll on your body. I love working with customers because I am a people person and want to serve my community. </h2>This job has been more fulfilling than my career in the corporate world, just not as stable. I may slow down working in the next couple years, but I like the flexibility of working when I want to. Working in the corporate world, it is hard to take time off. I have six grandchildren so I want to take days off and spend time with my family. I take screenshots of all the nice things customers have said about my service. Some reach out to me and say they appreciate me taking the time to call them and make sure their orders were right. Tips make up about 95% of what we make shopping for Instacart, so I take those relationships with customers seriously. I never want to over promise and then under deliver. Everyone is sick of the coronavirus and wants it to be over, but... confirmed infections are now growing again in many states, even adjusting for increased testing, and about 750 Americans are still dying of COVID every day. The early hotspots of New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts are under control, at least temporarily. But as the excellent and free<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/coronavirus-us-cases.html"> coronavirus data pages from the New York Times </a>show, confirmed cases are now increasing again in 21 US states, including some big ones: California, Texas, and Florida. A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-us-worst-fighting-outbreak-leaked-cdc-document-yahoo-2020-6">leaked CDC document</a> suggests the US is doing the worst job fighting <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> of 10 countries with current outbreaks — including Brazil, Russia, and Iran. Optimists dismiss this concern, suggesting that, among other things, new infections represent a small percentage of the population and are often geographically isolated.The trouble with this logic is that when people aren't taking precautions, infections spread. As one epidemiologist memorably put it, you can't have a <a href="https://twitter.com/statnews/status/1255799084683845637?lang=en">"peeing section" in a swimming pool</a>. Back in January, after all, there was only one case in the country. Then there were only a few. But now, five months later, we've had more than 2 million cases and over 115,000 Americans are dead.The irony is… based on what we now know, simple mask-wearing and distancing would likely do the trick. The more we learn about the virus, the more we can target our prevention measures. And the more we can target our prevention measures, the more we can go back to living our normal lives.We now know that the coronavirus spreads most easily in crowded, confined indoor spaces in which people spend sustained time around infected people who are talking or singing.Outdoor activities are much less risky. Indoor activities with masks and distancing are less risky. Brief encounters (less than 10 minutes) with infected people are less risky. Masks help stop "respiratory droplets" that might spread the virus from getting into the air. Simple distancing, meanwhile, helps stop respiratory droplets from reaching others in high enough concentration to make them sick. As <a href="https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspa.2020.0376">another study</a> concluded this week, "facemask use by the public could significantly reduce the rate of COVID-19 spread, prevent further disease waves and allow less stringent lock-down regimes." In other words, if we just wore masks in crowded indoor spaces and maintained distancing whenever possible, we could probably control the coronavirus. Alas… — HB<h2>TAKE OF THE DAY</h2><div type="image" title="defund the police" height="3000" width="6000" msid="76329011" hostid="261"></div>Defund the Police? We can't afford not to! Cities and states will likely soon slash law enforcement budgets because they have to, whether or not they want to. As the <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/06/how-mitch-mcconnell-defunding-police/612856/">Atlantic's Peter Beinart</a> and <a href="https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/06/gop-may-defund-the-police-with-pandemic-budget-cuts.html">New York Magazine's Ed Kilgore</a> write, pandemic-induced budget crises are ravaging local governments. Absent massive federal intervention, they'll need to slash budgets. The Floyd protests have made police departments an obvious target. The Defund the Police movement has arrived at a moment when local governments don't have money to maintain police budgets anyway. Big-city mayors across the country have already announced disproportionate cuts to police funding. Expect a lot more of that as the fiscal crisis deepens. The irony, as Beinart notes, is that it's congressional Democrats who've sought to bail out local governments and Senate Republicans who've blocked rescue funds that could protect police departments. This is why there will almost certainly be another colossal stimulus package before the election. Democrats want to protect local governments. And Republicans want to do everything they can to juice the economy going into the election. But don't be surprised when Republicans try to earmark a lot of that federal aid for police departments, and Democrats oppose it. — DP<h2>QUESTION OF THE DAY</h2><div type="image" title="Pence unmasked " height="850" width="1133" msid="76329016" hostid="261"></div>Yesterday, Vice President Pence posted a photo of himself speaking to staffers at the Trump campaign headquarters in Virginia. Shortly thereafter, <a href="https://twitter.com/DJJudd/status/1270895485642039296?s=20">observers pointed out</a> that the Pence group was 1) violating a Virginia law against such gatherings and 2) that no one in the picture was following the guidelines set forth by Pence's own coronavirus task force on wearing masks and social distancing. Stocks tank as pandemic fears return

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Schools across the US canceled the week-long spring vacation to try to prevent the spread of COVID-19.</li><li>But mental <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> concerns are on the rise, and <keyword id="3216" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="students">students</keyword> are struggling to balance a need for a break with COVID safety.</li><li>Some students are venturing on traditional <keyword id="906096" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="spring-break">spring break</keyword> trips, while others considered lower-risk options.</li></ul>Kyle arrived in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, around 2 p.m. the last Friday of February. Just a few hours later, Kyle, who asked to omit his last name for privacy reasons, was drinking and taking shots at the shoreside bar Wrecked at the Reef. Later that night, his group of 15 friends (and friends of friends) went bar hopping, from Tekila Bar to Iguana Banana. Kyle said the only sign of the pandemic he noticed that night was the curfew, which cut his night short at 11 p.m. It wasn't a scheduled spring break for Kyle, a 21-year-old junior in <keyword id="6360288" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="College">college</keyword>, but it was his version of one. When his school, Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona, <a href="https://kjzz.org/content/1628583/nau-starting-spring-semester-virtual-classes-canceling-spring-break">canceled</a> its spring break last fall, Kyle and his friends started planning a trip."I thought, 'Why not just go?'" he told Insider. "The virus has been going on for a while now, so I might as well go because it's not going to end anytime soon."As early as last fall, <keyword id="48403" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="universities">universities</keyword> across the country canceled spring break. Some students, like Kyle, planned wild trips anyway. Others scheduled modified vacations while mourning the loss of a college ritual. Those who aren't traveling are looking ahead at a nonstop semester, and they're burning out. Across the country, schools are reporting a <a href="https://healthymindsnetwork.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Healthy_Minds_NCHA_COVID_Survey_Report_FINAL.pdf">rise</a> in depression, anxiety, exhaustion, and loneliness among college students. Typically, spring break would provide a designated respite from the stress. But this year, schools have shortened or canceled the time off to discourage <keyword id="6354692" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> during the pandemic, leaving students to find their own ways to take much-needed breaks. Despite <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/texas-gov-abbott-opening-state-lifting-covid-19-mask-mandate-2021-3">some states preemptively lifting restrictions</a>, the coronavirus remains a serious threat - perhaps increasingly serious as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-covid-variant-coronavirus-variants-spread-mutations-pandemi-2021-3">new variants circulate the country</a>. It's possible that spring break could be a superspreader event again this year.<h2>Last year, spring break was a superspreader event</h2><div type="image" title="Last year's spring break crowds at Fort Lauderdale, Florida." height="800" width="1066" msid="81470111" hostid="261"></div>Last year was Moses Roldan's first "real spring break," the junior at St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida, told Insider. He spent the first week of March <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNxUHKH8HD8&amp;t=10s=10s">partying</a> on the shores of Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach. He said he remembers lifting his GoPro up and seeing "hundreds, maybe even a thousand people, all bunched up together."At that point, the coronavirus wasn't on his radar. Outbreaks of a new respiratory illness were popping up around the globe, but the World Health Organization wouldn't officially <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-pandemic-timeline-history-major-events-2020-3#january-23-chinese-authorities-placed-the-11-million-person-city-of-wuhan-under-quarantine-and-the-rest-of-the-hubei-province-followed-days-later-8">declare the coronavirus pandemic</a> until March 11. Much of what we now know about the virus, like how it can travel through the air and sometimes spreads via asymptomatic infections, was not yet understood.In retrospect, Roldan said he's lucky he didn't get sick because similar gatherings - like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-spring-breakers-cabo-texas-test-postive-2020-3">an outbreak among 44 spring breakers vacationing in Cabo</a> - would later be linked to the spread of COVID-19. Community case rates spiked two weeks after students returned to campus following spring break in mid-to-late March, according to an analysis of smartphone location data published in the <a href="https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3606811">Journal of Urban Economics</a>. Those rates were especially high in areas that saw students return from destinations like Florida and New York via airports.A year later, students are again faced with the choice to travel or stay in place. Many of them have already tested positive for the virus, with little to no symptoms. And after a particularly difficult year, students are craving a break.<h2>Schools are replacing spring break with one-off 'wellness days' and offering 'staycation' grants</h2><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-colleges-universities-with-the-most-coronavirus-cases-2020-9">College campuses have seen massive outbreaks</a> of COVID-19 throughout the pandemic, leading many universities to cancel or reschedule spring break as early as last fall. Some schools have replaced the traditional week off with "wellness days." In theory it's a middle-ground solution: give students a couple days off, but schedule them during the week to discourage travel.In an email to students at Ohio State University, the college's president wrote in December, "While we hope students can use these days to relieve some stress, we want to re-emphasize the importance of following COVID-19 safeguards - particularly limiting travel - should current conditions continue."Other universities have even offered incentives for students not to travel. The University of California, Davis, offered <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2021/03/09/uc-davis-spring-break/">$75 "staycation" grants</a> to students who aren't planning to leave town for the break.<h2>It hasn't stopped students from going on vacation</h2><div type="image" title="Miami Beach, South Beach, Spring Break closed public beaches sign police warning due to Coronavirus Pandemic" height="800" width="1066" msid="81470112" hostid="261"></div>Nick, a Temple University sophomore who asked to omit his last name so he could speak freely, said he's not so sure these efforts have successfully stopped travel.Temple University moved its classes online this spring, and while Nick isn't planning to travel, he's seen his classmates log on to Zoom calls pool and shoreside. No one bats an eye, he said. "I know people who are traveling right now, and because they're on Zoom, they can just go," he told Insider.The sophomore said he feels jealous, but he also doesn't want to be responsible for spreading COVID-19. Lauren, a third-year at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, who also spoke to Insider on the condition of anonymity, said she's "over" the virus. She's driving from her home in Houston, Texas, to spend a week skiing with five friends in Buena Vista, Colorado, the third week of March.It's a smaller group in a more remote destination than she'd typically choose, like Florida, Mexico, and the coast of Texas.Other student travelers are still seeking sunshine. Although travel interest has drastically decreased - flight searches are down 76% from last March according to Kayak - travelers are still looking for warm, domestic destinations, a representative for Hotwire, a travel search engine, told Insider.Florida remains a popular destination for vacationers this year. Last January, only one Florida destination topped Hotwire's list of most-booked destinations for March. This January, a majority of the most-booked destinations for March were in Florida, Katie Lay, the senior director of database marketing at Hotwire said in an email.Marcelle, a senior at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Michigan, who withheld her last name, wanted to escape the cold, so she traveled by plane to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with five friends when they had a Wednesday off in February. The group originally looked for an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/are-airbnbs-safe-coronavirus">Airbnb</a>, but ended up booking their accommodations at a small hotel. Like many other student travelers, Marcelle's group packed their laptops and tuned into remote classes poolside. Roldan, who lives in Miami, said he still plans to scope out the city's spring break scene again this year. He said he'll avoid crowded clubs and bars, and opt for places where he can just "chill out." "This year, I really just expect to have fun," he said. "But I don't really expect it to be crazy like last year."<h2>Young people need a mental health break</h2>Whether they're traveling or not, students told Insider that single days off don't provide the same mental break that comes with a full week vacation. They've had an especially tough year of balancing schoolwork with the added stressors of the pandemic.A CDC report published this summer found that one in every four young adults in the US had <a href="https://www.insider.com/cdc-11-percent-us-adults-seriously-considered-suicide-in-june-2020-8">seriously contemplated suicide</a> in the last month. In the fall, the Healthy Minds Network <a href="http://www.bu.edu/articles/2021/depression-anxiety-loneliness-are-peaking-in-college-students/">conducted a survey</a> of 33,000 students, and half of them screened positive for anxiety or depression.A fourth-year computer science major at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, told Insider his first month of the spring semester this year was riddled with anxiety attacks. He requested not to be named so he could share his experience honestly."I've been in college for four years, and I've experienced stress before, but there's always something you can look forward to," he said. "This semester we don't even have that."What he did have was a "wellness day," but instead of relaxing, the 21-year-old spent the Tuesday off playing "catch-up." He had assignments due the next two days and a list of things to turn in Sunday night.For some students, a true break means getting away from campus. Others just want permission to stop and relax."The reason students miss spring break so badly is not so that they can go to Cancun or whatever, but so that they can just have a mental break from the stress of being a college student," Grace, a senior at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, told Insider. Grace, who declined to share her last name, is planning to go home for Easter in April, but Holy Cross canceled its usual end-of-February break this year. Waiting for a break later in the semester leaves several consecutive months of school to get through during an already tough year."I think we're all kind of just trying to take it week by week, and not having a break to look forward to makes it just that much more challenging," she said.<h2>COVID-19 variants make it harder to 'get lucky' and avoid infection </h2><div type="image" title="Students get tested at St. Joseph's College in New York." height="800" width="1066" msid="81470113" hostid="261"></div>No social interaction is risk-free during the pandemic, but some spring break options are riskier than others, Amesh Adalja, a pandemic preparedness expert at Johns Hopkins University, told Insider."We're talking about what used to be on MTV's spring break, that's what the concern is," Adalja told Insider.Mixing social groups, drinking alcohol, and yelling over loud music all increase the risk of coronavirus transmission, Adalja said. He added that the highly transmissible B.1.1.7 variant - the one first identified in the UK - is currently <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/highly-contagious-variant-found-in-uk-could-get-a-foothold-in-florida-following-super-bowl-2021-2">circulating in Florida</a>, so there's less room for lapses of judgment."If you would have gotten lucky before with the original version of this virus, it's less likely that you would get lucky and avoid infection with a new variant, if you're in a situation where you're not following those general common sense principles," Adalja said.The safest spring break option is a solo road trip like Jocelyn Rausten's. The junior at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, <a href="https://www.insider.com/college-students-traded-dorm-life-for-van-life-2020-11">lives in a van</a> and plans to spend a couple of long weekends visiting national forests or driving along Oregon's coast. Adalja said a trip like that has "zero risk." If you want to travel with friends, keep the group small and limit it to your household contacts to minimize your risk of exposure. You should also avoid crowded places like restaurants and bars, where you're likely to remove your mask to eat or drink.Even outdoor spaces can be high-risk settings if people aren't properly masked and distanced, said Marissa Levine, professor of public health expert at the University of South Florida. She also emphasized the importance of signage at restaurants to remind people to take precautions."People need reminders that we're still in a pandemic," Levine said. "If we don't do that, then when people go on vacation to relax, they'll let their guards down."Most students Insider spoke with said they plan to travel domestically, wear masks, and social distance. But not all of them plan to get tested or quarantine before their trips, meaning they could potentially pose risks to the communities they're visiting.Any college student traveling for spring break should assume they've been exposed to the coronavirus, Adalja said. That means they need to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/isolate-before-after-covid-19-test-be-sure-of-results-2021">self-isolate for five to seven days</a> after coming home or returning to campus, get tested, and continue to quarantine while they wait for their results.<h2>It'll be a long time until students get their vaccines, but spring break is happening, shots or not</h2>With vaccine doses expected to be available to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-us-will-have-vaccines-300-million-people-may-2021-3">every American adult who wants them by May</a>, it may seem like the end of the pandemic is in sight.But most young people who don't have chronic health conditions won't be vaccinated in time for spring break, and the immunity afforded by previous illness wanes over time.Experts have <a href="https://www.insider.com/experts-analyze-3-thanksgiving-plans-what-is-safe-2020-11">previously told Insider</a> that people who have already gotten COVID-19 can take more risks because they have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/long-term-coronavirus-immunity-months-years-2020-11">some level of immunity</a>. But with at least five <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-variants-infectiousness-mutations-vaccines-2021-1">distinct coronavirus variants</a> circulating in the US and worldwide, that protection may have some holes. "If it's been a while since you've been infected, like you got infected last spring break, then maybe your immunity isn't so strong anymore," Adalja told Insider. "I would be a little bit more cautious if you're somebody that's more than several months out from your infection."When Kyle started planning his spring trip to Mexico back in November, he had no idea he'd have access to the vaccine before his vacation.Kyle said he got both of his vaccine shots before his trip through his mom and dad, who work in a hospital setting. Kyle said that he didn't technically qualify for the vaccine, but his parents didn't want him coming home frequently without being vaccinated.But even without the vaccine, Kyle said he probably still would've gone to Mexico."I stayed inside all summer and didn't do much last semester," he said. "This can't be on me now. I've been waiting to be done with the virus."
