Interestingly, the data observed that not a single scheme in small-cap funds manages to outperform their respective benchmarks. Indian economy to outpace world average growth in 2023 – Can it duck global headwinds?

Rail passengers can heave a sigh of relief. Railway Minister <keyword id="6356597" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Suresh-Prabhu">Suresh Prabhu</keyword> is unlikely to hike the railway fares in the Railway budget 2015-- the first for him. Contradictory to the expectations of a steep hike, the railway minister has decided to give it a miss this year. 
	 
	According to media reports, despite a staggering balance sheet, the minister decided against the mood as the passenger growth has been on a decline while railway freight too did not show any promising growth. 
	 
	“Fares were increased by the government in June last year, three weeks before the then railway minister Sadananda Gowda presented his budget. It was a steep hike — 14.2% in passenger fares and 6.5% in freight. With diesel prices down, the government does not have a basis to go for a hike," the news report quoted a railway official on the condition of anonymity. 
	 
	Interestingly, railway minister Prabhu was personally in favour of a fair hike but was convinced against the idea by senior officials of the organisation. 
	 
	He is now banking on the main Union Budget for higher allocation of funds as well as reforms in policies to boost investments in this sector. The ministry has sought an increment of Rs 50,000 crore in the budget, up from the present level of Rs 38,000 crore. 
	 
	“Prabhu will also take the joint venture and public-private partnership (PPP) route to raise another Rs 70,000 crore and is likely to go in for bilateral financing and technological support from countries such as China, Japan and France, all of which are major suppliers and have evinced interest in participating in India's railway expansion,” suggested the report. 
	 
	Interestingly, analysts are keenly awaiting the rail budget. It is being anticipated that the ministry will open up to the private sector, which in turn, could turn tables for the organisation. 
	 “What the markets expect are more details on how would the government go about funding the capital expenditure plans. What are the innovative means that the government will use and how will they tap the sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, life insurance companies overseas at competitive rates. There is no dearth of resources overseas that are willing to invest for the long - term,” said Ajay Bodke, head of investment strategy and advisory, <keyword id="149189" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prabhudas-Lilladher">Prabhudas Lilladher</keyword> in another media report. 
	 
	The railway budget is scheduled to be announced on February 26, 2015 and is being looked at as a pointer to the Narendra Modi government’s first full-fledged Union Budget, which will be unveiled on Saturday, February 28, 2015 by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

The sharp rebound in stock markets follows Tuesday's mayhem which wiped out over ₹31 lakh crore of investors' wealth in a single day as markets crashed after poll results lagged its expectations. On Friday, the 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 1,720.8 points or 2.29 per cent to hit a new record peak of 76,795.31 in day trade. The benchmark ended at 76,693.36, up 1,618.85 points or 2.16 per cent. The NSE <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> settled with a jump of 468.75 points or 2.05 per cent at 23,290.15. Following the remarkable recovery in equities, the market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies went up by ₹28,65,742.36 crore to ₹4,23,49,447.63 crore (USD 5.08 trillion) in three days. "Domestic markets shrugged off weak global cues, as investors cheered the <keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI" source="keywords">RBI</keyword>'s higher growth forecast for FY25 in its credit policy announcement which propelled Sensex to a fresh all-time high above the 76k-mark on massive broad-based buying support. "Also, the arrival of monsoon rains on time and expectations of its even spread across the country raised hopes of softening inflation going ahead. With the election uncertainty now over and the NDA party most likely to form the government, investors are hopeful that the action will now shift to reforms and the upcoming Union Budget," Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research) at Mehta Equities Ltd, said. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) left its key interest rates unchanged on Friday as expected, keeping the focus on inflation amid robust economic growth that is likely to provide the new Modi government headroom for manoeuvring reforms. The Monetary Policy Committee, consisting of three RBI and an equal number of external members, kept the repo rate unchanged at 6.50 per cent for an eighth straight policy meeting and stuck to its relatively hawkish stance of "withdrawal of accommodation", Governor Shaktikanta Das said in his statement. With the <keyword id="19948184" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-economy" source="keywords">Indian economy</keyword>, Asia's third-largest, growing faster than expected in the previous year, the RBI raised its <keyword id="19972825" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GDP-growth" source="keywords">GDP growth</keyword> projection for the current fiscal through March 2025 to 7.2 per cent from 7 per cent while maintaining its inflation forecast at 4.5 per cent. All the 30 Sensex companies ended in the positive territory on Friday, with Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Bharti Airtel, Infosys and Tata Steel emerging as the biggest gainers. "This week, the market experienced extreme volatility, with investor emotions on a roller-coaster ride. The RBI's decision to keep the repo rate unchanged at 6.5 per cent, along with an upward revision in the growth rate to 7.2 per cent from 7 per cent, boosted market sentiment. This indicates solid performance for the domestic economy," Vikram Kasat, Head of Advisory of Prabhudas Lilladher Pvt Ltd, said. In the broader market, the BSE smallcap gauge climbed 2.18 per cent and midcap index rallied 1.28 per cent. All indices ended in the positive territory. Telecommunication jumped 3.78 per cent, IT soared 3.38 per cent, teck (3.33 per cent), auto (2.53 per cent), utilities (2.18 per cent), metal (2.15 per cent), energy (1.99 per cent) and consumer discretionary (1.94 per cent). As many as 2,890 stocks advanced while 970 declined and 92 remained unchanged on the BSE. "The anticipation of stability within the coalition government at the centre, coupled with the RBI's upward revision of its growth forecast for FY25 to 7.2 per cent, fuelled a broad-based rally in the domestic market. The Indian market surpassed its previous record high set on exit-poll day and reached a fresh peak," Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, said. In an eventful week, the BSE benchmark Sensex jumped 2,732.05 points or 3.69 per cent and the Nifty zoomed 759.45 points or 3.37 per cent. He may want to manage some part of his portfolio very actively wherein he knows the bets he is taking, the company, the management etc. However, if there are opportunities that are coming at a sector level and it is a sunrise sector, and you are betting on a large part of the sector through an index fund, then you will benefit over a period of time without having to worry who will be the winner etc” he says. How much allocation one should have towards index funds would vary from investor to investor. “If there is 70% allocation towards equity, the investor should deploy some 15-20% in passively managed funds,” says Parekh. What to look for when selecting an index fund Before choosing an index fund, one should consider the following factors. Select the proper index: Since now many index funds are available, the first thing is to choose where he wants to invest, whether he wants to track a market capitalisation or sector and so on. Expense ratio: Look for funds with low expense ratios to minimise costs and maximise returns. Tracking Error: “Assess the fund's ability to closely track its benchmark index over time to ensure it effectively mirrors market performance,” says Shresta. Historical Performance: While past performance doesn't guarantee future results, reviewing the fund's historical performance relative to its benchmark can provide insights into its tracking ability and consistency. New Delhi, Market experts have been repeatedly warning of froth in the mid-and small-cap segments. And, the fear of sharp correction in this space has finally happened with 4.10 per cent correction in the Nifty small-cap index and 3.07 per cent correction in the Nifty mid-cap index on Tuesday, says V.K. Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services. Even after this correction, fundamentals do not support the valuations in these segments. Therefore, more pain is likely, he said. On the other hand, high quality large-caps in banking, capital goods and IT are on stronger wicket. More selling in the broader market and buying in large-caps is likely in the near-term, he added. Even though the undercurrent of the market is strong, fundamentals do not support a sustained rally. Crude at $92 is a big macro concern. The market is ignoring this headwind, he added. Vaishali Parekh, Vice President - Technical Research, Prabhudas Lilladher said Nifty witnessed a halt to the ongoing rally near 20,000 zone closing on a flat note while the broader markets witnessing heavy profit booking to the extent of 3-4 per cent drop in a single session. The Nifty index would have the near-term support zone at around 19,820-19,840 levels with the sentiment maintained with a cautious approach. The support for the day is seen at 19,850 levels while the resistance is seen at 20,150 levels, Parekh said. BSE Sensex is up 107 points 67,328 points on Wednesday morning. Powergrid, Axis Bank, Titan, Tata Motors are up over 1 per cent.

<ul><li>Market watchers have been hoping that India might head to a <keyword id="1067776" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="capex-cycle" source="Orion">capex cycle</keyword> as seen in 2003-08.</li><li>While there are similarities, the global demand scenario is different, say economists.</li><li>In terms of announcements, most of them relate to airlines where the benefits flow to the manufacturers outside India. </li></ul>The Indian markets are hitting new highs every day and the government is hopeful that this will translate to a higher capital expenditure (capex) cycle starting soon. However, even as hopes build for a repeat of 2003-08, the early indicators are mixed, as per economists. “There have been affirmative statements made by several companies on investment in FY24 which is positive as it is premised on a recovery in consumption demand. The picture for the first quarter of the year is, however, quite expectedly mixed. Therefore the announcements are definitely not broad-based and are restricted to a handful of sectors,” say economists at Bank of Baroda. What’s common with 2003-08? Most experts say that levers are in place for a repeat for the 2003-2208 high capex phase, which was led by private investment. Tailwinds for a capex recovery are similar — like higher utilisation levels which are also expected to pick up in demand. Strong bank and corporate balance sheets, an infrastructure push by the Indian government in the form of highways, railways, rural infra, Jal Jeevan Mission and defence spending should augur well for this. Moreover, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) is also another added positive for domestic manufacturing, in addition to the push for energy transition. The amplified need for data centres and China+1 strategy are providing a fertile ground for revival of the capex cycle, says India Strategy report by Prabhudas Liladher. “This is likely to be the first industrial led capex cycle after the 2003-08 cycle was led by power and infra,” says the Prabhudas Lilladher report. A Kotak Institutional Equities report agrees that the levers are in place but remains cautious, it believes that the space for a sustained pace of <keyword id="4875151" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-capex" source="Orion">government capex</keyword> is limited. “Private capex cycle would require visibility of long-term high demand growth (including global growth), which is still missing. For now, even as the long-term growth fundamentals remain strong, we remain cautious in calling out for a broad-based sustained capex cycle,” Kotak says. Without a global impetus and visibility of medium to long-term demand, the capex cycle over the next 5-7 years may be much narrower and slower than 2003-08, the report adds. Airlines invest, but where? As much as ₹5.96 lakh crore worth of investments have been announced for Q1FY24 – of which 74% share comes from the airlines sector. “Investments in this industry are unique in so far as it involves purchase of aeroplanes which are imported. Hence while it does add to the capital stock of the country it would not be generating backward linkages with other sectors and hence other related industries may not benefit much from such purchases. The boost is more for the global manufacturers of these aircrafts,” says Bank of Baroda. The share of power sector is 10%, and is from the conventional space. The chemicals sector has a share of 8% followed by machinery with 3% and the auto sector with 2%. ‘Optimism in the long-term’ Data from the funds raised in the corporate bond market also provides a clue into the mood of private investments. As per BoB data, the total amount of funds raised was impressive at ₹2.33 lakh crore as against ₹0.97 lakh crore in the last year. Here too, 89% of the funds mobilised was from the financial sector of which asset financing companies accounted for 72% – indicating limited fund raising by non-finance companies. “Therefore, the investment story looks blurred when looked at from the point of view of the debt market. There could be reasons to be optimistic of the future. However, in the short to medium term the heavy lifting has to be done by the government on investment,” say BoB economists.

Jio and Airtel have been nibbling away at Vi’s market share for several months now. The last time Vi reported a net addition in its subscribers was back in March 2021. TCS to flag off the earnings season — here’s what to expect

The yield on government securities in the secondary market fell on Tuesday on value buying ahead of the scheduled release of April-June economic growth data on Wednesday. At 1.40 p.m., the yield on 10-year benchmark 6.54 per cent-2032 bond yield was trading at 7.2046 per cent as compared to 7.2534 per cent closed on the previous trading session. The GDP data for April-June is scheduled to be released on Wednesday. Indian markets will remain shut on Wednesday on account of Ganesh Chaturthi. "We expect GDP to grow by 14.0 per cent- 14.5 per cent y-o-y in Q1 FY23 backed by low base and strong domestic demand. A broad based pickup was observed across consumption, services industry and investment," said <keyword id="14852368" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ritika-chhabra-economist" source="Orion">Ritika Chhabra- Economist</keyword> and Quant Analyst, Prabhudas Lilladher Pvt Ltd. The further fall in bond yields has been capped by the rise in crude oil prices in the international market. Brent crude oil which was trading at $101.46 by the closing of market hours on Monday is now trading at $104.74. According to various media reports, oil prices rose more than $3 a barrel due to OPEC+ output cuts and conflict in Libya helped to offset a strong US dollar and a dire outlook for the US growth.
