New Delhi, Nov 28 () India's installed power generation capacity has reached 364.9 gigawatts, which is sufficient to meet the country's electric demand, Parliament was informed on Thursday.
 Besides, the peak as well as energy requirement deficit was less than one per cent during the first seven months of 2019-20, Minister of States for Power and New and Renewable Energy R K Singh said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
 "As on 31.10.2019, the installed generation capacity in the country is around 3,64,960 megawatt (MW), which is sufficient to meet the electricity demand in the country. It may be seen that the gap between demand and supply of power during the current year 2019-20 (up to October 2019) both in terms of energy and peak is less than 1 per cent," he said.
 This gap, Singh said, is generally on account of factors other than inadequacy of power availability in the country such as constraints in sub-transmission and distribution network, financial constraints of state power utilities to purchase power.
 He further said if there is any shortfall in meeting power requirement, distribution companies can also purchase power from power exchanges on a daily basis.
 "The government is supporting the states/UTs in augmenting and strengthening the intra-state transmission and distribution network through various schemes including Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana and Integrated Power Development Scheme," the minister said.
 The coal supply has also improved, as the coal stock in power plants as on November 21 stood at 23.1 million tonnes (MT) for 14 days as against 12.1 MT for 7 days on the same day last year, the minister said. ABI HRS

India reaches electricity generation capacity of 365 GW: Power Minister

New Delhi, Nov 28 () The government on Thursday said a total 31,696 Mega Watt (MW) of grid connected solar power generation capacity has been set up in the country till October 2019.
The government's target is to installing 1,00,000 MW grid connected solar power capacity by December 2022, Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy R K Singh said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
"As on October 31, 2019, a total grid connected solar power generation capacity of 31,696 MW has been set up in the Country, projects of 17,998 MW capacity are at various stages of installations," the minister said.
Tenders for another 36,278 MW capacity projects have been issued and with new tenders of around 15,000 MW planned in remaining period of 2019-20 and 2020-21, and the country is on course for achieving the target, he said.
Most of the solar power projects in the country have been/are being set up with private investment, Singh said.
"The union government has been implementing National Solar Mission under which various Schemes (as detailed in Annexure-III) have been launched for promoting the generation and use of solar power in the country. This...makes publicity for effective implementation all schemes including Solar Schemes through print, social, electronic and other media. The Ministry has also launched a Mobile App for solar rooftop systems," the Singh said. ABI BAL

India sets up 31,696-MW solar power generation capacity: Minister

Aggressive bidding by power producers in the recent coal block auctions will result in under-recovery of fuel cost ranging from 39 paise to Rs 1.02 a unit for them for 25 years, according to a study. Consumers, however, stand to benefit, with a tariff reduction of almost 1% as early as in 2016-17. 
 
 
According to the Economic Times, power companies have agreed to forego the mining cost they were allowed to pass on to consumers and instead pay the government to get hold on to captive mines to guarantee the supply of coal. The aggregate under-recovery of each bidder is estimated at Rs 800 crore in FY 2015-16, which is likely to increase to about Rs 1,800 crore by FY 2017-18. 
 
 
As power generation projects of the winning bidders have existing power purchase agreements with distribution utilities, mainly in states like Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal and Odisha, average tariff relief is estimated at about 0.9% for consumers in these four states by FY 2016-17, ratings firm ICRA told ET. 
 
 
The coal ministry has concluded the first phase of e-auction of 33 coal blocks. Of these, 12 were for the power sector out of which nine have been allocated so far. These blocks hold geological reserves of 1200 million tonnes, of which extractable reserves are estimated at 60%, enough to provide fuel security for about 6 GW of power generation capacity. These were among 200-plus blocks on which the Supreme Court had cancelled mining licences last year, citing irregularity in their allotment. 
 
 
The winning bidders may look at options to bridge the under-recoveries in fuel cost using additional gains generated from sale of 15% of the generation capacity in the merchant, or short-term trading, market as well as the possibility of quoting higher fixed-capacity charge in the upcoming competitively bid power purchase agreements for the capacity which is yet to be tied-up. However, the slow progress seen in tie-ups of PPAs for power procurement in long-term and medium-term basis by the state-owned distribution utilities in the past two years remains a key concern for independent power producers which are yet to tie-up their capacity, ET said. According to ICRA, the absence of fuel charge recovery in power purchase agreements for the generation capacity linked to coal blocks of the winning bidders remains favourable for key power buyers - state-owned distribution utilities. This is expected to result in a reduction in their power procurement costs.

Renewable energy also accounted for more than two-thirds of investments in power generation. However, the power sector is not progressing fast enough to transmit the generated renewable energy. The report, keeping in mind the Paris agreement, said that the heating, cooling and transport sectors needs to migrate to cleaner energy, and they need to do it soon. In India, the number of installed solar thermal collectors increased by approximately 25% in 2017 as compared to 2016. And India is also <a href="https://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/solar-trends-2018-gtm-research#gs.QQSt8y8">among</a> the leading countries when it comes to solar power. Since 2010, India grew by a compound annual growth of approximately 170% in the solar power market. The country has set a new record with the installation of 9.6 GW solar power units in 2017, which is double the 4.3 GW set-up that was installed in 2016. As of 2017, the total installed solar capacity of India was at 19.6 GW, which is about one-fifth of the planned solar capacity of 100 GW by 2022. The states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are the fastest growing in terms of solar power usage in India.

2017 saw the largest rise in renewable energy capacity: Report

New Delhi, Nov 24 () State-run power giant NTPC is likely to raise around Rs 10,000 crore through green bonds for acquisition of the government's stake in THDC India Ltd (THDCIL) and North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd (NEEPCO), a source said.
 Proceeds from green bonds are used to finance clean and green and environment-friendly infrastructure. Since THDCIL and NEEPCO are hydro-power generators, any investment in these two firms would fall in the category of green bonds.
 "The company is most likely to raise over Rs 10,000 crore via green bonds to acquire government stake in THDCIL and NEEPCO. The acquisition is likely to be before the end of this fiscal as the government intends to achieve its disinvestment target of Rs 1.05 lakh crore," the source told .
 "The company has not started the process to appoint a valuer to fix the value of the central government stake in THDCIL and NEEPCO," the source added.
 Earlier this week, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved a proposal of the finance ministry for divestment of central government stake in THDCIL and NEEPCO.
 Government of India's shareholding of 74.23 per cent in THDCIL will be divested along with transfer of management control to NTPC.
 Similarly, the government's shareholding of 100 per cent in NEEPCO will be divested along with transfer of management control to NTPC.
 According to the company's annual report, NEEPCO's net worth as on March 31, 2019 was Rs 6,301.29 crore.
 The net worth of THDCIL was Rs 9,280.78 crore as on March 31, 2019.
 The source said the size of the deal for acquisition of government share in THDCIL and NEEPCO has been worked out to be around Rs 10,000 crore after necessary adjustments like debt and other charges.
 The acquisition will be in line with NTPC's objective of having 30 per cent renewables out of 130 GW of total envisaged power generation capacity by 2030. At present, the NTPC Group has around 57 GW of power generation capacity.
 According to NEEPCO's website, the company operates seven hydro, one solar and three thermal power stations with a combined installed capacity of 1,457 MW.
 NEEPCO also has one 600 MW hydro power project under development. It is scheduled for commissioning in 2019-20 fiscal.
 THDCIL's total installed power generation capacity is 1,513 MW. It has two hydro power generating stations -- Tehri (4X250 MW) and Koteshwar (4X100 MW) and two operational wind power plants in Gujarat -- one at Patan (25X2 MW) and another at Devbhumi Dwarka (30X2.1 MW). KKS ABM

NTPC likely to issue green bonds to raise funds for THDCIL, NEEPCO acquisition

New Delhi, Mar 17 () As many as 14 power plants with total power generation capacity of 13,830 mega watt (MW) have been issued show cause notices by the central pollution control board (CPCB) for not complying with environment norms, Parliament was informed on Tuesday.The CPCB has also issued directions to another four power plants with total generation capacity of 1,495 MW for not obliging to environmental provisions, Minister of Power R K Singh said while replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha.While 14 power plants having total generation capacity of 13,830 MW were issued show cause notices by the CPCB on January 31, 2020, another 11 units of four power plants with total generation capacity of 1,495 MW were issued directions on February 26, 2020, he said.Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&amp;CC) notified new environmental norms for particulate matter, sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), water consumption and mercury for thermal power plants (TPPs) on December 7 December 2015, the minister said. In order to ensure uninterrupted power supply position in the country, he said, a phased implementation plan to be rolled out by 2022 for installation of Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) in plants for a capacity of 1,61,402 MW and upgradation of electrostatic precipitator in plants for a capacity of 64,525 MW was prepared by Central Electricity Authority (CEA) in consultation with the stakeholders and this plan was submitted to MoEF&amp;CC on October 13, 2017.Accordingly, on the directions of MoEF&amp;CC, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) issued directions under section 5 of Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 to TPPs. CPCB has informed that those TPPs which fail to comply with new emission norms by the specified timelines are considered to be non-complying and are liable for penal action including closure of the plant and imposition of environmental compensation, Singh said.The CEA has also sent letters to thermal power stations for strict compliance of existing Environment norms within the stipulated time given by MoEF&amp;CC/CPCB.Singh said, "So far, CPCB has issued show cause notice on 31.01.2020 under Section 5 of Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 to 31 units of 14 TPPs as to why non-complying units of the plant should not be closed and environmental compensation be imposed for continuing non-compliance of CPCB directions. CPCB has also issued directions/show cause notice for closure under Section 5 of Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 on 26.02.2020 to 11 units of 4 TPPs."The list of those served with show cause notices included Vizag Hinduja TPP, HNPCL, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, Sri Damodaram Sanjeevaiah TPP, APPDCL, SPSR Nellore, Rajiv Gandhi TPP, HPGCL, Hisar, Haryana, National Capital Thermal Power Station, NTPC Dadri, Gautam Budh Nagar, U.P, Harduaganj Thermal Power Station, UPRVUNL, Aligarh in U P, among others. 14 power plants get notices for not complying with environment norms

New Delhi, Mar 3 () GE Steam Power India on Tuesday said it has bagged a USD 32 million (about Rs 230 crore) order for supplying two short circuit generator systems of 2,500 MVA to Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), Bengaluru. CPRI is an autonomous society under Ministry of Power. The contract was awarded to GE Power Systems India Private Ltd (GEPSIPL) by CPRI, a company statement said. The scope of the project includes supply, installation, commissioning and testing of two sets of 2,500 MVA short circuit generators with super excitation, driving and auxiliary systems, ready for parallel operation in synchronisation with the existing 2,500 MVA generator to yield short circuit powers of 2,500 MVA, 5,000 MVA and 7,500 MVA, respectively, the statement said. The generator will be manufactured at GE's factory in Sanand, Gujarat. The project is envisaged to be operational by 2022. The addition of 2 x 2,500 MVA short circuit generators to the existing one in HPL, Bengaluru will upgrade the capacity of the high-power lab to 7,500 MVA, making it the highest capacity short circuit capacity laboratory in India. The project is an initiative by Ministry of Power to grow high-power laboratory in India, creating an opportunity for the country to become a global hub for short circuit testing of electrical equipment under the flagship 'Make in India' program. GE Steam Power bags USD 32 mn order from CPRI

New Delhi, Jan 17 () Adani Green Energy and Azure Power have emerged as successful bidders in Solar Energy Corporation of India's first manufacturing-linked solar tender, a top government official said on Friday.
 Adani has bid for 1.5 GW solar cell manufacturing capacity and 6 GW generation capacity, MNRE Secretary Anand Kumar said on the sidelines of India Energy Forum-Renewable Energy Summit here.
 He also said that Azure Power bid for 500 MW solar cell manufacturing capacity and 2 GW generation capacity.
 With the green shoe option, the capacity for Adani would increase to 2 GW of solar cell manufacturing capacity and 8 GW generation capacity, Kumar said.
 For Azure, with green shoe option, it will be 1,000 solar cell manufacturing and 4 GW generation capacity, he added.
 "The bids have been finalised and only paperwork remains," he said adding that the tariff has been fixed at Rs 2.92.
 After successful auction, an investment of around Rs 6,000 crore is expected for setting up 1 GW of solar manufacturing facilities, which would generate permanent direct employment of up to 10,000 people, a source said.
 At present, India imports 95 per cent of its solar module requirement from China, leading to a forex outflow of around USD 10 billion per year. ABI SID ANS

Adani, Azure top bidders for manufacturing-linked solar tender

An inter-ministerial committee headed by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) Secretary has finalized this report and submitted it to the Prime Minister's Office. The committee has proposed both fiscal and non-fiscal incentives to push mega <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Solar+energy">solar power</a> projects across the country. 
 
The proposal includes several suggestions for the government. This includes power purchase agreement, grid connection, land to put solar panels and manufacturing of equipment. 
 
The ministries of New and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=renewable+energy">Renewable Energy</a>, Power, Finance, and Commerce and Industry among others are involved in the process. 
 
The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Narendra+Modi">Modi </a>government has set an ambitious target to raise the solar power generation capacity by five times to 1,00,000 MW by 2022. If India achieves this target it will become one of the largest producers of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=renewable+energy">renewable energy</a>, bypassing several developed countries.

Budget 2016 – Solar Projects may
enjoy incentives

The Indian<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Budget-2016-likely-to-give-oil-cess-relief-to-domestic-producers/articleshow/50482483.cms"> power</a> system is the fifth largest in the world and among the most complex. With an annual electricity production of 1,031 billion units (BU), it is among the top five power consumers across the globe, and the demand is expected to touch 1,900 BU by 2020. Still, it is far below the average global consumption. 
 

	As on June 2015, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Budget-2016-If-you-are-concerned-about-ever-increasing-power-bills-read-this-/articleshow/50865175.cms">all-India generation capacity</a> stood at 275 gigawatts (GW) with a contribution of 69% from thermal energy, 15% from hydro, 13% from renewable, and 2% from nuclear sources. The eastern region contributes 12% to the total generation capacity. Despite the efforts to generate more electrical energy by using multiple energy sources, the country has recorded a shortage of 3.6% of demand in FY15. As per the Central Electricity Authority’s (CEA) Load Generation Balance Report 2015-16, in spite of the expected capacity addition of 20 GW, the country will probably experience energy shortage.
 

	Growth in industrial activities, population, economy, prosperity and urbanisation, along with rising per-capita energy consumption, has widened the gap of energy access in the country.
 

	Experts also say that while there is supply, lack of technology is hindering its potential from being unlocked to its full power. Allocation of funds and tax exemption are the most important <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Budget-2016-Impact-of-FDI-in-real-estate-sector-and-future-expectations/articleshow/50866872.cms">expectations</a> of the sector to achieve the government’s ambitious vision ‘24x7 Power for All by 2019’. Budget 2016: Long way to go for 24x7 Power for All

New Delhi, Feb 1 () Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday announced expansion of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM KUSUM) Scheme under which 20 lakh farmers would be provided funds to set up standalone solar pumps. 
 While presenting the budget for 2020-21, the minister said that 15 lakh farmers would be provided funds to set up grid-connected 15 lakh solar pumps.
 The previous Modi government in February last year had unveiled the PM KUSUM scheme with an outlay of Rs 34,422 crore. 
 Sitharaman told the Lok Sabha that the scheme has removed farmers' dependence on diesel and kerosene and linked them to solar energy. The scheme also enables the farmers to set up solar power generation capacity and sell it to the grid. 
 She stressed that farmers would be able to earn livelihood through their baron land also (by generating solar power on that). 
 The PM KUSUM scheme had three components -- 10,000 megawatts (MW) of decentralised ground mounted grid-connected renewable power plants (Component-A); installation of 17.50 lakh standalone solar powered agriculture pumps (Component-B); and solarisation of 10 lakh grid-connected solar powered agriculture pumps (Component-C).
 All three components combined, the scheme had aimed to add a solar capacity of 25,750 MW by 2022. KKS MR

Govt expands PM KUSUM scheme for solar pumps, targets to cover 20 lakh farmers

New Delhi, Feb 6 () Renewable energy sources are expected to account for around 21 per cent of electricity demand in 2021-22, Power Minister R K Singh said on Thursday. "As per Central Electricity Authority's National Electricity Plan, contribution of renewable energy sources is estimated to be around 21 per cent of the total electricity demand of the country in the year 2021-22 and 24 per cent by 2026-27," Singh was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the power ministry The major steps being taken by the government to meet the targets of renewable energy in the country include permitting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) up to 100 per cent under the automatic route, strengthening of Power Purchase Agreements(PPAs) and mandating requirement of Letter of Credit(LC) as payment security mechanism by distribution licensees for ensuring timely payments to renewable energy generators. As part of Intended Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Accord on Climate Change, India has made a pledge that by 2030, 40 per cent of its installed power generation capacity shall be from non-fossil fuel sources and will reduce its carbon emission intensity of GDP by 33-35 per cent considering 2005 level. The government has set a target to install 175 GW of renewable energy capacity in the country by the year 2022.
