It was a diverse neighborhood, and most people were immigrants. I was surrounded by people speaking different languages.When I was two, my family moved to Nice. We lived in a similar neighborhood and spent our summers on vacation at the beach in Toulon.<div type="image" title="Arthur Begtine in a blue shirt sitting on a grey sofa" height="720" width="810" msid="111859894" hostid="261" sizebytes="39616"></div><h2 id="e16601cf-ca05-4da1-814d-cc0c4800b1e0">There was a strong sense of community</h2>At elementary school in Nice, we'd have Wednesday mornings off and go to school on Saturday morning. We had a Catholic Bible study class, which now seems crazy.It was a tight-knit community at school. I remember one kid's parents getting divorced, and we all gave him a hug and told him we were sorry for him.When I was five, we moved to Ernstein, a village near the French-German border, for my father's job.But after three years, we moved from a small European village to a big city in the US.My mom's two sisters were based in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/atlanta-things-to-do-surprising-things-2023-10">Atlanta</a> and we moved to be closer to them.<h2 id="b9cb0a17-57b8-4001-a636-a38b3910f249">Moving to Atlanta was lonely</h2>It was lonely being the only French kid at first. I spoke no English, though I could understand a little because my mother spoke it. I was put in an English as a second language class at school. Most of the other immigrant kids were from Spanish-speaking countries.At first, being the only French kid was lonely. At the time, there weren't as many immigrants from around the world in Atlanta as there are now.I learned English in three months by making friends through the soccer and basketball teams. I started to integrate.<h2 id="8a7226ab-bf21-477a-9c38-6addfda45f42">I noticed some major differences with France</h2>People were treated differently based on their clothes or the car their parents drove. In France, nobody cared about that at all.I find people friendlier in the US but more superficial than in France.In France, my sister, who was a year and a half older, and I would walk to school when I was six. In Atlanta, you needed a car to get anywhere. We were stuck in our neighborhood unless our parents drove us somewhere.I liked that everything was bigger and more convenient in Atlanta. I was shocked that places had air conditioning, and you could get free drink refills.<h2 id="033b035f-3c56-4beb-b885-966d4d0a24da">New York reminded me of home</h2>We moved to Pelham, New York when I was 11 for my father's work. New York felt like home because it was full of people from all over the world. It reminded me of Toulon. I didn't feel as much like a foreigner.My sister and I could take the train to school by ourselves and walk everywhere. It was like living in Europe again.I lost my French accent, and I started to feel more confident.<h2 id="22daf239-4d72-46fb-bffe-a7e34a616916">I struggled with moving back to France</h2>Our family moved back to France when I was 14. I was upset when I found out. I felt like I'd been "Americanized" — I was into US culture and sports, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-mom-europe-cultural-parenting-differences-returned-california-culture-shock-2024-7">I felt like I no longer fit</a> into French life.It was tough, and I was angry for a long time.<h2 id="ce346c78-93bb-4381-95dc-fd525e82c7e8">I moved back to the US at 17</h2>After we went back to France, I returned to the US as soon as I could when I was 17. I lived with my aunt near Atlanta until I was recruited to play basketball at a university in Montreal. I loved Canada but got cut from the team after a year and moved back to New York.I didn't have much money. I worked in a hostel and shared a dorm with six other people.There were other tough times. I got divorced in my 20s, but I was never tempted to move back to Europe. It would have meant giving up on myself.<h2 id="138efa39-e228-492e-8348-85d7fcd2c701">I've succeeded in the US, but I'm glad I was born in France</h2>I went to college in Georgia and graduated in 2013. After a few jobs, I started my career in the trucking industry back in Atlanta. I've been in the trucking industry for 11 years and now work as a senior business development manager, earning six figures.In the US, no matter your socio-economic background, if you work hard, you can succeed. In France, you're stuck at the bottom if you don't have the right connections.Europe is better for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-in-france-ways-life-has-been-better-changes-2024-6">work-life balance</a> and a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/woman-moved-to-greece-from-nyc-better-cheaper-lifestyle-2024-6">better quality of life</a>, but the US is the place to be if you're a go-getter like me.Atlanta has changed over the years I've lived here. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/population-boom-south-texas-georgia-dallas-houston-atlanta-movers-homebuyers-2024-3">There are more immigrants</a> here now than there were in the 90s.I speak four languages, and that helps me with my clients.I made it in the US, but growing up in France made me more humble. After all, our shared Italian heritage really bonded us during our early days of dating.When we began mapping out our trip, we planned to visit historical sites in Rome, sip wine in the Tuscan countryside, and explore the colorful hillside towns and turquoise waters of the Amalfi Coast.I was perhaps most excited for our four-night stay on the Amalfi Coast, which was named one of the best honeymoon destinations for 2024 by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cntraveller.com/gallery/honeymoon-destinations">Condé Nast Traveller</a>.Although the Amalfi Coast is absolutely gorgeous, and we enjoyed our time there, I left feeling like something was missing from the experience.When we returned home and told our family and friends about this portion of our honeymoon, many were shocked to hear that my husband and I had <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/least-favorite-places-to-travel-to-according-to-frequent-traveler-2024-6">no desire to return</a>.Here's why our trip to the Amalfi Coast didn't quite live up to our expectations.<h2 id="020fcb27-303f-43aa-96bc-2b42a240dbcc">We rarely found sidewalks along the busiest roads</h2><div type="image" title="A car going up a steep hill with lots of signs around. There are houses going up the mountain." height="3000" width="4000" msid="113069118" hostid="261" sizebytes="1807208"></div>As soon as we were dropped off alongside the busy road outside our Airbnb, I noticed one thing — there weren't sidewalks or pedestrian walkways. As my husband and I explored the town we were staying in, we clung to the walls on the side of the road as buses and motorbikes sped by.We found that the majority of the towns we visited along the coast didn't have sidewalks either, which meant getting around on foot felt a little more difficult and dangerous than we expected. Although the locals didn't seem phased, I was a little nervous about walking down the busier streets.<h2 id="09cc1871-aae6-4df8-94c8-5f72dd403bd2">The steps and steep inclines were more intense than I expected</h2>My twice-weekly <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/doing-pilates-for-20-years-strengthened-body-throughout-life-2024-3">Pilates classes</a> did not prepare me for the hundreds of steps and steep inclines of the Amalfi Coast.One night, we decided to visit a gorgeous seaside restaurant in Praiano. When figuring out the best way to get there, we discovered it was only a 40-minute walk from our Airbnb. Since it was a nice night, we decided to give it a go. However, I didn't realize the walk would be more like a hike.Before leaving home, I had been warned about the many steps on the Amalfi Coast, but I severely underestimated how difficult it would actually be to get around on foot.In all fairness, I did visit in July, when temperatures reached up to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Although the heat definitely made the steps harder to conquer, I'm not sure I would have fared much better in cooler temperatures.<h2 id="4e5cc1ac-d426-46ed-8334-2232ba546c24">A lot of the Amalfi Coast felt like a tourist trap</h2><div type="image" title="People walk down the steps near colorful buildings in Positano." height="2762" width="3683" msid="113069115" hostid="261" sizebytes="1032016"></div>As someone who grew up right outside <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/where-to-eat-in-new-york-city-restaurants-according-to-local">New York City</a>, I can typically smell a tourist trap from a mile away. To me, a lot of the most popular destinations on the Amalfi Coast felt as though they were specifically designed for tourists.I guess this makes sense since the coast attracts <a target="_blank" href="https://www.euronews.com/travel/2024/07/02/amalfi-coast-one-of-italys-most-popular-destinations-is-getting-its-own-airport-this-summe">roughly 5 million visitors</a> a year. However, the coast felt like a far cry from the more authentic Italian experience I was expecting to find.For example, while wandering the gorgeous streets near the port in Positano, we found that many of the gelato shops were owned by the same company. The gelato was delicious, but I was a little disappointed that we couldn't sample flavors from a variety of different local merchants.When I travel, I also love checking out the products from local vendors. In Positano and Amalfi, I was looking for one-of-a-kind mementos and handcrafted pieces but mostly found dresses and pottery that looked nearly identical from place to place.In my experience, it was hard to find authenticity in many of the tourist-filled locations on the coast. Although we genuinely enjoyed our experience there, I preferred immersing myself in the culture of the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-do-differently-next-trip-to-italy-2023-10">small towns</a> we visited in Tuscany.<h2 id="d83b8099-2cb1-4c4e-8bff-082aa4a28105">In our experience, the public transportation wasn't super reliable</h2>When I was researching and planning our trip, one of the No. 1 tips I read was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-to-know-visiting-amalfi-coast-busy-season-first-time">not to rent a car on the Amalfi Coast</a>. After all, the steep, winding cliffside roads are not for the faint of heart.With this advice in mind, we decided to use <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tips-for-visiting-los-angeles-without-car-using-public-transportation-2023-10">public transportation</a> to get around. Although we loved how cheap the buses were (typically less than 3 euros per person), we soon discovered that they rarely showed up at the scheduled times.This led us to have to cancel reservations and plans, which was disappointing since we were only in town for a few days. Additionally, we found the taxis to be quite expensive — one 15-minute drive cost us 50 euros.Because navigating public transportation quickly became draining, we ended up spending more time at our Airbnb than at the beach.<h2 id="f79ab41e-c6f6-434a-bfd5-79122606c7ac">That said, we still loved our time on the Amalfi Coast</h2><div type="image" title="Stephanie and her husband pose on a pier near the sea. Behind them is a beach and cliffside buildings." height="878" width="1170" msid="113069116" hostid="261" sizebytes="212010"></div>In terms of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-honeymoon-destinations-around-the-world-2019-7">honeymoon destinations</a>, it doesn't get more romantic than the stunning seaside towns on the Amalfi Coast.My husband and I genuinely enjoyed our time there — it just isn't the type of place I'm dying to return to.The views were incredible, the people were friendly, and the food was delicious. But next time we return to Italy, we'll probably stick to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-lesser-known-italy-travel-destinations-according-to-local">less-touristy areas</a> to really immerse ourselves in the local culture.

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="20138372" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lithuania" source="keywords">Lithuania</keyword> ranks as the <keyword id="23243125" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="happiest-place" source="keywords">happiest place</keyword> for those under 30, but it also has very high suicide rates.</li><li>On the surface, it seems like a paradox. But a closer look reveals a stark generational divide.</li></ul>Domantas Katelė, an official in Lithuania's Ministry of Social Security and Labour, is widely known as his country's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-sick-leave-pto-mental-health-work-from-home-2024-8">"Gen Z"</a> minister. Rings adorn Katelė's tattooed fingers, which he uses to proudly point to his "Politicians make me sick" door sign. At 25, he's the country's youngest-ever deputy minister (he still wears braces), and rarely lets visitors leave his office without taking a selfie. Katelė's portfolio includes <keyword id="20654323" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="youth-affairs" source="keywords">youth affairs</keyword>. "It's a golden age for the youth of Lithuania," he told Business Insider during a visit to Vilnius in August. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-lithuania-happiest-country-young-people-from-local-2024-6">The World Happiness Report</a> backs up his claim, ranking <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-lithuania-world-happiest-country-for-gen-z-millennials-education-2024-6">Lithuania as the happiest place in the world for those under 30</a> earlier this year. But it would be inaccurate to paint <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/brazil-lithuania-move-career-safety-progression-make-friends-2024-1">Lithuania</a> as some sort of dreamland, Katelė adds. After all, it's also Europe's <keyword id="23243126" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="suicide-capital" source="keywords">suicide capital</keyword>. <h2>A paradox?</h2>Though the suicide rates have declined since its independence from the Soviet Union in the 1990s, Lithuania still often leads the European Union in this grim statistic. Between 2019 and 2021, Lithuania had the highest rate of death by intentional self-harm in the 27-country bloc, and, according to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.oecd.org/en/data/indicators/suicide-rates.html">OECD's most recent data</a>, it had the second-highest suicide rate globally. It seems paradoxical: How can <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vilnius-lithuania-happiest-gen-z-cheap-safe-fun-tech-hub-2024-9">a country be great for young people</a> while also being Europe's suicide capital? Katelė lists some of the reasons Lithuania is ranked so highly for young people — some of the<a target="_blank" href="https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/cache/digpub/housing/bloc-2b.html"> most affordable housing</a> in Europe, free education for many Lithuanians, and a growing economy providing ample job opportunities. Walking the streets of Vilnius in the summer, you'll find stylish young people wherever you look — sipping Aperol Spritzes at Old Town bars, lounging by the river in the artsy Užupis district, or skateboarding at the Baltasis Tiltas Skate Park. <div type="image" title="Užupis waterway" height="4284" width="5712" msid="113488780" hostid="261"></div>Although the city is steeped in history — some very dark and recent — it feels modern and vibrant. But when you talk to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-men-women-leisure-spending-habits-differ-report-shows-2024-9">Gen Zers</a> in Lithuania about its preeminence, the reaction is often the same: disbelief. A few said it made them laugh. "I was very surprised, and my friends who are living in Vilnius were also surprised," said Adriana Doroškevičiūtė, 23, sipping on an iced coffee at a café in the capital. "I thought we were depressed," she added. "When we receive the opposite of that, you think, what is happening?" Richard Bogu, 23, was also shocked. It's not that he thinks Lithuania is a bad place for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/young-people-are-developing-money-dysmorphia-2024-7">young people</a>; just that, like others, he has come to associate the country with bleakness. "We are known for being very sad people," he said, adding: "But, slowly, we're going toward being a small, happy nation." <div type="image" title="Richard Bogu sits down at a coffee table" height="4284" width="5712" msid="113488790" hostid="261"></div>Bogu said he feels optimistic about the future, especially for people his age — the tech industry, in which he works, is booming, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.lrt.lt/en/news-in-english/19/2210828/average-wage-in-lithuania-up-12-sodra">salaries are rising</a>, and jobs are ample. "This country gave me opportunities," he said. A key benefit is that most Lithuanians can enter the workforce unburdened by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/regret-paying-off-student-debt-instead-earning-passive-income-2024-7">student debt</a>, as university education is free for many. Wages are rising rapidly, and the expanding startup sector is <a target="_blank" href="https://unicorns.lt/en/news/lithuanian-startups-are-looking-hundreds-employees-not-just-it-specialists?ref=philomaths.tech">eager to hire</a> young talent. <h2>No country for old men</h2>But while things may be looking up for the younger generation, older Lithuanians don't seem to share the same optimism. According to <a target="_blank" href="https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/databrowser/view/ilc_pw01__custom_12656014/default/table?lang=en">Eurostat's 2023 overall life satisfaction survey of those aged 65 years or over,</a> older Lithuanians are nowhere near as happy as the country's youth. This generational divide bears out in the <keyword id="21021432" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Happiness-Report" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="World Happiness Report" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="World Happiness Report">World Happiness Report</keyword>. While Lithuania ranked first for those under 30, it was 19th across all age groups, dragged down by its 44th-place ranking for those over 60. "If you don't have children or grandchildren to care for you, you're basically done," Bogu said. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retirees-moving-social-security-cheaper-living-healthcare-canada-japan-mexico-2024-9#:~:text=Retirees%20are%20increasingly%20moving%20abroad,Canada%2C%20Mexico%2C%20and%20Japan.">Retirees</a> in Lithuania receive some of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.etk.fi/en/work-and-pensions-abroad/international-comparisons/pensioners-income-level-internationally/average-pensions-in-europe/">lowest pensions</a> in Europe, and have <a target="_blank" href="https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/databrowser/view/tespn060/default/table?lang=en&amp;category=t_ilc.t_ilc_ip.t_ilc_pn">among the lowest median relative income</a> of older people across the European Union. Data provided to BI by Lithuania's Ministry of Social Security and Labour shows that 62% of those who died by suicide in 2023 were over 50, with 8.7% under 30. It's a far starker divide than in countries like the US or UK, pointing to a chasm between the generations. <a target="_blank" href="mailto:grizas.antanas@gmail.com">Antanas Grižas</a>, a clinical psychologist specializing in suicide prevention in Lithuania, said the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-kid-baby-boomer-parents-generational-differences-parenting-lessons-2024-4">generational divide</a> is deeply felt in the country, as well as elsewhere in the former Soviet Bloc. He told BI that economic factors, such as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boomer-retirement-savings-social-security-pension-budgeting-2024-7">low retirement incomes</a>, certainly impact mental health, but that the historical context is key, too. <div type="image" title="A Soviet-era building with a sign reading &quot;Vilnius&quot; is seen in Vilnius, Lithuania on 28 July, 2024." height="684" width="1024" msid="113488788" hostid="261"></div>"The changes after the fall of the Soviet Union were very fast and drastic," he says. Those who lived through this period faced a double trauma: enduring Soviet rule and navigating the chaotic transition to an independent capitalist nation. Plus, as Grižas points out, psychiatry was sometimes politicized under <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vintage-photos-show-life-behind-the-iron-curtain">Soviet rule,</a> with dissidents being labeled as mentally ill, which has strengthened a generational <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stephen-hays-mental-health-vc-what-if-ventures-addiction-2024-7">stigma over mental health.</a> "The <keyword id="19919711" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gen-Z" source="keywords">Gen Z</keyword>, haven't experienced that directly, " he noted. "So it makes total sense that they have different conditioning and a different mindset." Reports like the happiness rankings are also often based on self-assessments, and Grižas suggests that comparisons may play a key part in the variation between the generations. "The younger generation can easily compare and see the progress that we as a nation made," he said. <div type="image" title="Domantas Katelė in front of his office door" height="4284" width="5712" msid="113488778" hostid="261"></div>Katelė, the "Gen Z" minister, agrees that the positive self-assessments among the youth may have been influenced by their awareness of the hardships faced by their elders. While the previous generation was deprived of luxuries, he said Gen Z can relish the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-gen-z-feels-good-about-money-inflation-jobs-2024-6">freedom to spend</a> the equivalent of $160 on dinner, to vacation abroad, and to participate in democracy. Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are crisscrossing the country to reach as many voters as possible.In two major national polls released on Sunday, Harris held narrow advantages over Trump.In a new <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/harris-regains-slight-lead-nationally-electoral-college-holds/story?id=115083875">ABC News/Ipsos poll</a>, Harris had a four-point lead over Trump (51% to 47%) among likely voters. About 55% of female registered voters said Harris would be a strong president, compared to 45% of female voters who said she'd be a weak leader.Male likely voters in the CBS survey backed Trump over Harris by nine points (54% to 45%), with 64% of male registered voters believing the former president would be a strong leader, compared to 36% who said he'd be weak.Meanwhile, female registered voters were split down the middle regarding Trump's leadership qualities, with 50% of respondents believing he'd be a strong commander in chief and 50% of respondents saying he'd be a weak leader.The ABC poll also showed a sizable gender gap, with Harris ahead of Trump by 14 points (56% to 42%) among women, while Trump led with men by a six-point margin (51% to 45%).
