<ul class="summary-list"><li>"Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" is an anime adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's graphic novels. </li><li>While it pays homage to the books and Edgar Wright's 2010 movie adaptation, the anime tells a new story. </li></ul><p>"Scott Pilgrim," the story that began as a series of graphic novels from author Bryan Lee O'Malley, may have reached its final form in the anime series "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off."</p><p>The eight-episode show, which Netflix released on Friday, is an adaptation of O'Malley's original story: Toronto-based Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera), an unemployed 23-year-old who plays bass in a band called Sex Bob-omb, becomes infatuated with American transplant Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), whose new delivery gig in town necessitates traveling through a subspace highway running through Scott's brain. In order to be with Ramona, Scott has to fight his way through a league of her evil exes.</p><p>In O'Malley's graphic novels, and Edgar Wright's cult classic 2010 movie adaptation <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/scott-pilgrim-vs-the-world-cast-then-and-now-photos-2020-6"><u>"Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,"</u></a> Scott is put through the wringer, eventually defeating all of Ramona's exes. And while "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" pays clear homage to its roots — the English voice cast of the series features the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/scott-pilgrim-anime-cast-vs-movie-netflix-2023-11"><u>movie cast reprising their roles</u></a> — things progress a bit differently in the show. </p><p>Netflix's version is a masterclass on how to breathe new life into already excellent story material.</p><p><strong>Warning: Major spoilers ahead for "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off."</strong></p><div type="image" title="scott pilgrim in the anime, surrounded by his friends, and ramona's assorted exes in the background in the middle of a crater" height="2160" width="2880" msid="105395109" hostid="261" sizebytes="230986"></div><p>The title of "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" is quite literal. The show's first episode hews close to both O'Malley's first graphic novel and the movie, with Japanese animation studio Science Saru ("Devilman Crybaby") recreating familiar story beats in delightful detail. But at the end of the episode, the show blows up its entire premise: Scott <em>doesn't</em> win his fight with Ramona's first evil ex, Matthew Patel. Instead, he gets his ass handed to him, and then disappears.</p><p>Scott's apparent death throws the story into blissful chaos, and it's Ramona who benefits the most. While "Scott Pilgrim" has always been about unpacking Ramona's past, no matter how much she tries to shy away from it, it's always been through the lens of Scott's own journey. In "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off," Ramona's the one fighting for Scott. Convinced that his death was a hoax, she reconnects with her exes to try and figure out which of them may have kidnapped the guy who hasn't even really become her boyfriend yet.</p><div type="image" title="roxie richter and ramona flowers in the scott pilgrim anime, lying on the floor of a DVD rental store with cases scattered around them as rain falls" height="2160" width="2880" msid="105395110" hostid="261" sizebytes="168570"></div><p>That new structure does lead to some kick-ass fights — Ramona's battle with her sole female ex, Roxie Richter (Mae Whitman), in episode three is a particular highlight — but also catharsis for Ramona herself. It also plays out like a spot of extremely good fanfiction, where characters who barely interacted in previous iterations of the "Scott Pilgrim" story end up becoming best friends, or engaging in sordid movie-set affairs. The series shows no fear of going off the rails, engaging in some very meta movie-within-the-show shenanigans, and an eleventh hour twist that brings Scott Pilgrim himself back to the screen.</p><p>As a longtime "Scott Pilgrim" fan who also happens to like Science Saru's work, I frankly would have eaten up anything that "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" served, beat-for-beat recreation included. But while "Scott Pilgrim" certainly bears the wit and humor of its predecessors that make it recognizable, it still manages to feel completely novel. Bringing the focus to Ramona allows not only for the show to explore her character in a new way, but for other members of the cast to shine like never before.</p><p>Ultimately, it's a good lesson — sometimes, not being too precious about remaining faithful to a story can bring about glorious results. In order to bring "Scott Pilgrim" back to life, O'Malley and co-writer BenDavid Grabinski had to kill him — and "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" was all the better for it.</p>

The big twist in Netflix's 'Scott Pilgrim' anime breathes new life into a familiar story

Tehran, Apr 5 () Indian Ambassador to Iran Gaddam Dharmendra on Sunday visited coronavirus-hit Qom where he met the provincial governor and interacted with the stranded Indian pilgrims at a quarantine facility in the city.<p> The Ministry of External Affairs last month said that over 250 Indians have been infected with coronavirus in Iran and an elderly person aged over 70 years died.</p><p> "During the visit, the ambassador paid a courtesy call on Dr Bahram Sarmast, the Governor of Qom, and expressed gratitude to him for the support and cooperation extended to all Indian pilgrims presently in Qom, including arrangements for COVID-19 infected pilgrims," the embassy said.</p><p> Dharmendra, who was accompanied by senior officials of the embassy during the day-long visit, assured the Governor that all efforts will be made for the early return of the remaining pilgrims to India, the mission said in a brief statement.</p><p> India is currently under 21-day lockdown till April 14 to curb the spread of coronavirus and consequently, all international and domestic commercial passenger flights have been suspended for this period. India earlier evacuated hundreds of pilgrims from Iran.</p><p> The Indian diplomat later visited a quarantine facility specially set up for Indian pilgrims in Qom, the holy city in Iran where the first coronavirus case emerged in February.</p><p> "He closely interacted with the pilgrims and enquired about their well being. The pilgrims thanked the government of India and the Embassy for their continued support towards them," the statement added.</p> According to the Iranian officials, 58,226 people have tested positive for the virus and 3,603 people have died in Iran, the worst affected Middle East country by the pandemic which originated in China late last year. Dera Baba Nanak (Punjab), Oct 24 () Online registration of devotees began on Thursday after India and Pakistan signed an agreement to operationalise the Kartarpur Corridor to allow Sikh pilgrims to visit the holy Darbar Sahib in that country. For registration of pilgrims, online portal (prakashpurb550.mha.gov.in) has gone live today, an official statement said. <br /><br />The pilgrims will have to register themselves online on this portal and exercise their choice to travel on any day. <br /><br />Pilgrims will be informed by SMS and email of the confirmation of registration 3 to 4 days in advance of the date of travel. An Electronic Travel Authorisation will also be generated. <br /><br />The pilgrims need to carry Electronic Travel Authorisation, along with their passport, when they arrive at the Passenger Terminal Building here, the statement said. <br /><br /> The Kartarpur corridor will connect the Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Punjab with Darbar Sahib in Narowal district of Pakistan's Punjab province.

Chicken producer stocks fall on DOJ price-fixing indictments, while food distributor stocks pop

<p>Cannabis is illegal in <keyword id="12266" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nepal">Nepal</keyword>, but under an ancient legal loophole authorities allow holy men -- known as sadhus -- to smoke it during an annual, often wild, celebration in honour of Hindu god Shiva.</p>
<p>Thousands of pilgrims travel to the sprawling Pashupatinath temple complex in Kathmandu every year from all over Nepal and India to mark the occasion, which is known as Shivaratri.</p>
<p>Holy men mark the Shivaratri festival in Nepal and India by praying, smoking <keyword id="40905" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Marijuana">marijuana</keyword> or smearing their bodies with ashes but it is illegal for others to consume the drug.</p>
<p>"We have arrested 67 persons from the Pashupatinath temple. Most of them were found intoxicated with cannabis and disturbing the peace," Kathmandu police spokesman Uttam Subedi told AFP, adding that those arrested were pilgrims.</p>
<p>"Those who were harassing girls and were involved in suspicious activities have also been arrested. It's a huge event with thousands of people visiting the temple. So we have tightened the security," he added.</p>
<p>Thousands of police officers have been deployed at the temple premises and more than 150,000 pilgrims are expected to celebrate Shivaratri, which is a public holiday in Nepal.</p>
<p>In recent years, police have cracked down on sadhus selling cannabis during the event, but this was the biggest arrest of pilgrims for drug use to date.</p>
<p>Camps are set up in the area to accommodate the visiting sadhus, the main attraction of the festival, many of whom arrive weeks ahead of the celebration.</p>

Nepalese Police Arrest 60 Pilgrim Pot Smokers At Religious Festival

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Thanksgiving dates back to the Pilgrims in Massachusetts in 1621, right?</li><li>Wrong, some historians say.</li></ul><p>You probably grew up hearing the story that the first Thanksgiving happened in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1621.</p><p>But a group of Spanish settlers in Florida may have beaten the Pilgrims to the punch by nearly 60 years, some historians say.</p><p>The story of the Pilgrims' feast — the one behind all those elementary school plays and corny cartoon specials — is based on an actual meal that English settlers shared with the Wampanoag people to celebrate an autumnal harvest in the fall of 1621 in their newly established settlement of Plymouth, Massachusetts.</p><p>Yet in 1565, Spanish settlers in Florida held a first Thanksgiving-style feast with local Native Americans.</p><p>Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and 800 Spanish settlers landed in Spanish La Florida on September 8, 1565, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nps.gov/casa/learn/historyculture/the-first-thanksgiving.htm#:~:text=On%20September%208%2C%201565%2C%20Pedro,celebrated%20a%20Mass%20of%20Thanksgiving">the National Park Service says on its website</a>. There, they established a city called St. Augustine, which still exists today and is the "oldest continuously occupied settlement of European and African-American origin in the United States," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.citystaug.com/693/Our-History#:~:text=Founded%20in%201565%2C%20St.,the%20Spanish%20established%20at%20St.">according to the town's website</a>.</p><p>Upon their arrival, the Spaniards held a "Mass of Thanksgiving," followed by a meal with the native Timecua people, also known as the Seloy tribe, who occupied the region, according to the National Park Service.</p><p>The meal likely included Spanish cocido, a stew of salted pork and garbanzo beans, as well as red wine and sea biscuits, the park service says. Historians don't know for sure if the Timecua people contributed to the feast, but if they did, they might have provided items like turkey, venison, squash, maize, and sea catfish, according to the NPS.</p><p>Though the Pilgrims get the credit for the first Thanksgiving, they never actually used the word "thanksgiving" to describe their event, unlike the Spaniards, who did so decades earlier.</p><p>Part of the reason why we attribute the holiday tradition to the Pilgrims and not to the Spanish — despite the Spaniards being first — is because the British settlers eventually took full control of the land, not the Spanish, the NPS says.</p><p>With control of land and culture, it makes sense that British colonists celebrated <em>their </em>feast, not the one by the Spaniards.</p><p>In the years following the first "thanksgiving" feasts, colonists weren't so kind to the native populations who'd occupied the land for thousands of years prior to the settlers' arrival.</p><p>Even though the original feasts between the Europeans and the Native Americans were peaceful, settlers and later colonial governments <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/history-of-thanksgiving-2017-11">mistreated Indigenous peoples</a>, driving them from the land and decimating the population.</p><p>Now, many modern-day Americans recognize the holiday not as a day of celebration, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/thanksgiving-is-national-day-of-mourning-for-some-indigenous-americans-2022-11">but as a "National Day of Mourning.</a>"</p>

It was Foursquare sending me a notification with one of the app's millions of user-submitted tips.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"The calzone," the tip read. "Ask for marinara with a huge amount of basil. Sex on a plate."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I didn't tell Foursquare that I had sat down for dinner at a pizza place I'd never been to before, but the app knew anyway. Delivering that tip to my lockscreen at the right time is what Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley tells Tech Insider is the company's newest "superpower" and "magic trick."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The technology that makes Crowley's magic trick possible is a computer brain the company has been building since the early days of the iPhone called Pilgrim. According to Crowley, Pilgrim "is </span><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">the</span></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"> thing" that separates Foursquare from not just competitors like Yelp but every other app in the App Store. Since basically inventing the location check-in concept on mobile phones in 2009, the app has slowly faded into relative obscurity.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To date, Foursquare has raised over $120 million dollars in venture capital and reportedly turned down acquisition offers from the <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2010/04/22/facebook-and-microsoft-check-in-with-foursquare-will-crowley-sell/">likes of Facebook</a> <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2015/04/15/sources-yahoo-in-talks-to-buy-foursquare/#.wrbsh3d:dbXz">and Yahoo</a>. But its valuation is also said to be dropping as it works to raise more cash in a so-called down round, according to recent reports <a href="http://recode.net/2015/12/22/foursquares-value-will-be-cut-by-more-than-half-in-a-new-funding-round/">by Peter Kafka of Re/code</a> and <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2015/12/21/foursquare-is-raising-a-down-round/">Matt Lynley and Katie Roof of TechCrunch</a>.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">That means Foursquare's investors no longer think the company is worth as much as it was before, but we won't know anything for sure until the company officially announces its new round of funding. A Foursquare spokesperson declined to comment on the recent funding and valuation reports.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The company's two location discovery apps, Foursquare and Swarm, haven't come anywhere close to cracking the App Store's top downloads chart in the last year, according to <a href="http://www.appannie.com">App Annie</a>, an analytics firm. The iconic check-in aspect of the app, which had users competing with friends for bragging rights by seeing who could check in at venues the most, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/foursquare-just-gambled-everything-and-split-its-business-in-two-2014-5">was stripped out and put into a new app called Swarm</a>. Since then, the main Foursquare app has abandoned the check-in concept and focused on delivering personalized restaurant recommendations and expert tips from its 50 million monthly active users. It has also introduced <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/foursquare-launches-trending-this-week-2015-11">features like Trending this Week</a>, which surfaces new, hip restaurants in a city based on where other Foursquare users are eating.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Foursquare</span></p><p class="caption">Trending this Week was introduced in the main Foursquare app in November 2015. It wouldn't exist without Pilgrim.</p></div><p></p></div></div>A feature like Trending this Week, which collects aggregated and anonymized foot traffic data from Foursquare's users, wouldn't have been possible without Pilgrim. "We have this real pulse of a city now," Foursquare head of engineering Andrew Hogue told Tech Insider in a recent interview. "We know where people are going."</span></p><h2><strong>Meet "Pilgrim"</strong></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Since Pilgrim went online in early 2014, the company has started "finding interesting things to do with the data" it collects, Crowley says. It already licenses data to Twitter, Pinterest, Yahoo, Microsoft, and others to enhance their location features (Foursquare used to power location tagging in Instagram before it was replaced by Facebook's own tool.) In the last year, Foursquare has started offering business analytics with its foot traffic data, which Crowley describes as "an incredibly lucrative market."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Advertisers, for instance, can pay to see if their campaigns actually drove people into a Macy's or car dealership. Because Foursquare knows where its users are going, banks that give small business loans pay Foursquare to know if a business actually exists and isn't a scam. It works too. In September, <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/foursquare-nails-early-iphone-6s-sales-2015-9">Foursquare accurately predicted Apple would sell 13 million iPhones</a> during the iPhone 6S opening weekend based on its foot traffic data around Apple stores.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"We had all these people from financial institutions saying, 'What data do you have that we don't have?'" Crowley says. The answer is Pilgrim.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Crowley gets excited when he explains how Pilgrim works. "We have this superpower," he tells me from across a conference room table in Foursquare's New York City headquarters. "We have this awesome thing that we built, and it only lives in two apps - Foursquare and Swarm."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So what exactly is Pilgrim? It's an engine that runs in the background and records every time a phone with Foursquare or Swarm installed stops moving. When it stops moving, Pilgrim tries to figure out where exactly you are, if you've been there before, or if there's anything going on in the area you might be interested in, like a happy hour at an oyster bar. It has to decide if you're stopped at a traffic light, walking down the street, or entering a coffee shop. Pilgrim makes these decisions millions of times per day.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Crowley walks over to a large whiteboard and starts drawing a map of the intersection between Bleecker Street and Bowery in downtown Manhattan. He frequents Think Coffee, which is located at that corner.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When people check in at Think Coffee, he explains, it's not always logged from inside the building. A check-in could happen across the street or a block away. A cell tower could be broken, there could be other signal interference, or it could be a cloudy day. Shapes grow and shrink throughout the day. Think Coffee's shape will shrink at night, while a bar's shape might stretch and morph as more people arrive in the evening.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When you enter one of these shapes with the Foursquare or Swarm app on your phone, the app tells Pilgrim the shape it's detecting, and Pilgrim makes the final call about what shape you're actually inside. That's how Foursquare knew I had sat down at Lucali for the first time. It knows that Think Coffee's shape is more active in the morning and that Crowley has been there many times, so it decides to not ping him with a tip. The biggest misconception, he says, that still exists about Foursquare is that it's reliant on manual check-ins. Pilgrim has made it possible to check in without taking your phone out of your pocket. And Foursquare knows more about where its users are going than ever before.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In 2016, Crowley says Foursquare will be focusing more on how its data can be used in other apps.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Can you make a game that's different if you're playing it in a coffee shop versus if you're playing it in a bookstore or a bus station?" Crowley asks. "Can your exercise app be different if you went to a burger place for dinner yesterday or if you've been going to salad places for the last three weeks? Apple Maps recently started using Foursquare's business listings, but the competition is still strong. There's Google and Facebook, the latter of which is continuing to invest more in helping businesses and restaurants list themselves and communicate directly with customers.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With Pilgrim, Crowley thinks Foursquare has technology that's applicable in nearly any app.</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"><br />Whether it's because of Pilgrim or not, Crowley firmly believes that apps will only get better at understanding your habits and doing things for you"You have a hundred apps on your phone," he says. "If there was a Foursquare-style notification coming from some of those apps, what would they be? All these companies want to make them, they just don't have these shapes."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"If we fast forward five years into the future, this is how apps talk to you," he says. When you use a geofilter in Snapchat or type a venue name into Uber, you're using Foursquare data.</p><p>What's led so many companies to rely on Foursquare's location technology?</p><p>For starters, there are the more than 10 billion check-ins that Foursquare's 50 million monthly users have registered to date. But the company's real "superpower," according to founder and chairman Dennis Crowley, is something called Pilgrim. And starting Wednesday, Foursquare is <a href="https://www.goo.gl/2YFsdo">making Pilgrim available</a> to all apps for the first time.</p><p>"We live in a world today where people are building things based off of basic GPS coordinates," Crowley told Business Insider during a recent interview. With Pilgrim, Foursquare can give other apps and marketers "specific awareness of context in space" - a "big idea' Crowley said will "take time for people to wrap their heads around."</p><p>While traditional GPS can see when a phone enters a mall, Foursquare's Pilgrim technology is able to understand that the phone is on the second floor of said mall and inside a J Crew store for the second time. It's by analyzing this data that Foursquare has been able to accurately predict everything <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/foursquare-nails-early-iphone-6s-sales-2015-9">from iPhone</a> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/foursquare-data-predicted-chipotle-results-2016-4">to Chipotle sales</a>.</p><p>Crowley envisions other companies using Pilgrim to send notifications like hyper-specific coupons and even create Pokémon Go-like games that "change based upon where you bring your phone." Foursquare's main app has been <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/inside-foursquares-pilgrim-technology-2015-12">using Pilgrim for years to send custom-tailored recommendations</a> based on where its users go in the real world.</p><p>For Crowley, who first made his name by selling his location-based social network Dodgeball to Google in 2005, opening up Pilgrim is the culmination of Foursquare's seven-year history. While the company won't disclose actual numbers, Crowley said that "revenue is growing nicely" and that the business is in "a really healthy spot right now."</p><p>"We always thought that someone would come along and make something like the Pilgrim SDK and we would just us it," he said. <br />Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the state-of-the-art Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) at Dera Baba Nanak in Punjab on November 9. Both the countries have already signed an agreement for Kartarpur Corridor. <br /><br />The much-awaited corridor will connect the Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur, Punjab, with the gurdwara at Kartarpur. It is four kilometres from the international border, located at Shakargarh in Narowal district of Pakistan's Punjab province.<br /><br />Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, had spent more than 18 years of his life at the Darbar Sahib gurdwara in Kartarpur, Pakistan. It is located on the banks of the river Ravi, making it one of the holiest sites for devotees.<br /><br />Spanning over an area of around 2.5 lakh sq feet, the terminal will have a facilitation centre to host government officials responsible for ensuring hassle-free travel of pilgrims, food kiosks, parking areas and security points.<br /><br />The Indian government had acquired 50 acres land for the project and which can accommodate 5,000 passengers.<br /><br />Persons of Indian origin holding OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) card too can visit the gurdwara using the Kartarpur Corridor.<br /><br />Both countries had agreed to allow 5,000 pilgrims every day and that additional pilgrims will be allowed on special occasions, subject to capacity expansion by of facilities by Pakistan side.<br /><br />India and Pakistan had earlier decided that the corridor would be operational throughout the year and seven days a week, and that pilgrims would have a choice to visit as individuals or in groups.<br /><br />In November 2018, India and Pakistan had agreed to set up the border crossing linking Gurdwara Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur to Dera Baba Nanak.<br /><br />(With inputs from PTI)<br /><br />See also: <br /><br />

<p>According to Jones, Blair, 46, met Esther Pilgrim in 2007 on an online dating site and convinced her to invest as a limited partner in his BMC Entertainment Company. Claiming to be working on his comeback album, he lied that he'd pre-sold 20,000 copies of the five-CD box set. </p>
<p>Soon Blair finagled Pilgrim's American Express and Bank of America credit card numbers and was using them to live lavishly with his wife. </p>
<p>Last week, <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032600/" target="_blank">Dateline NBC</a> aired Pilgrim's story, in which she admitted she'd trusted Blair because of their similar backgrounds. </p>
<p>"I grew up in San Bernadino, California and so I knew of Tim Dog the rapper and his whole East Coast, West Coast rivalry in his music," she said. </p>
<p>Blair has received five years of probation and must pay $19,000 to Pilgrim within that time, Jones reports. </p>
