Post the completion of the separation, PhonePe is now a fully India-domiciled company. To recall, PhonePe moved its registered office from Singapore to India in October. “Setting up these businesses as separate entities will also provide value and create new opportunities for investors to participate in the Indian tech ecosystem – helping unlock and maximize enterprise value for shareholders of the two companies,” the companies said. The separation comes at a time when PhonePe is in talks to raise funds at a valuation of close to $13 billion, according to a <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-12-08/walmart-s-payments-startup-phonepe-seeks-to-raise-1-billion">Bloomberg report</a>. If it succeeds, it would become the most-valued fintech startup in India. The company had raised $700 million in 2020, led by Walmart and existing investors, including Tiger Global, at a valuation of $5.5 billion. While media reports earlier suggested that PhonePe was planning an IPO, the company’s founder and CEO Sameer Nigam in June 2022 dismissed the reports, saying, “PhonePe is not planning an IPO right now. We are focusing on building our business, and will go public once our core businesses turn profitable and our new initiatives have achieved a good product-market fit and scale,” according to a PTI report. As part of the separation of the two companies, the existing shareholders of Flipkart Singapore and PhonePe Singapore, led by Walmart, have taken up equity directly in PhonePe India. Walmart will continue to be the largest shareholder of PhonePe and Flipkart, according to the statement. “We are looking forward to the next phase of our growth as we invest in new businesses – like insurance, wealth management and lending, while also enabling the next wave of growth for UPI payments in India. This will help propel our vision to provide billions of Indians with financial inclusion,” said Nigam in the statement. Flipkart and PhonePe complete separation six years after acquisition

Decacorn fintech firm <keyword id="6357886" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="phonepe" source="Orion">PhonePe</keyword> has received an additional USD 100 million from <keyword id="6375561" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="general-atlantic" source="Orion">General Atlantic</keyword> during its ongoing fundraise round of USD 1 billion at a pre-money valuation of USD 12 billion, the company said on Wednesday. With this fresh funding, the <keyword id="80487" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="walmart" source="Orion">Walmart</keyword> group firm has raised USD 750 million till date. "PhonePe confirms a USD 100 million additional tranche of investment from General <keyword id="44121" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="atlantic" source="Orion">Atlantic</keyword>, a leading global growth equity firm, and its co-investors as part of our ongoing fundraise. General Atlantic initially invested USD 350 million in PhonePe in January 2023," PhonePe said in a statement. General Atlantic has invested USD 450 million in the ongoing fundraise, Ribbit Capital, <keyword id="526777" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tiger-global" source="Orion">Tiger Global</keyword> and TVS Capital Funds USD 100 million and Walmart has infused USD 200 million in the company. PhonePe gets additional USD 100 million fund from General Atlantic

PhonePe’s board recently approved the creation of a new employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) plan and the migration of over 3,000 PhonePe Group employees’ existing ESOPs by issuing new ESOPs under PhonePe India’s new plan. Under the newly liberalized automatic overseas direct investment ODI rules, PhonePe has also moved the ownership of recently acquired IndusOS Appstore (<keyword id="15154048" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="oslabs-pte-ltd" source="Orion">OSLabs Pte Ltd</keyword>) from Singapore to India. <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword>, in effect from August 22, 2022, announced changes in the ODI rules for fintech firms. PhonePe moves domicile from Singapore to India

<keyword id="790242" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="whatsapp" source="Orion">WhatsApp</keyword> India on Tuesday said that over the next six months, it will make significant investments regarding digital payments on its platform across the country, to accelerate its growth in a market where adoption of unified payments interface (UPI)-based payments has exploded. According to Manesh Mahatme, Director-Payments, WhatsApp India, as the adoption of 'payments on WhatsApp' increases with users across the country, the company looks forward to working with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to further expand it to all users. "We thank the NPCI for the increase in our cap to 40 million (from an initial cap of 20 million). Since our initial approval from NPCI, we have been working to deliver a simple, reliable, and secure experience for WhatsApp users that we hope will accelerate adoption of UPI for the "next five hundred million" Indians," Mahatme said in a statement. Last week, the NPCI approved increasing the user cap for WhatsApp's payment service from the current 20 million to 40 million users. According to Mahatme, the Meta-owned company has introduced several India-specific features in payments on WhatsApp over the last few weeks and have seen exciting results. "Over the next six months, we have planned significant investments in payments on WhatsApp across India — including many more "India-first" features — that we are sure will accelerate our growth," he informed. There is an opportunity, he said, for UPI to have an even greater impact for the country — especially in rural regions where digital and financial inclusion can significantly improve peoples' lives. "We believe that <keyword id="4878801" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="whatsapp-pay" source="Orion">WhatsApp Pay</keyword> can be a key partner to the NPCI and RBI as we all aim to scale adoption of UPI and financial inclusion to those most in need," the top company executive noted. India saw a whopping ₹7.7 lakh crore (over $100 billion by value) digital transactions via UPI in October for the first time, according to latest data released by the NPCI. In the month of October that saw record festive shopping across e-commerce platforms, digital payments witnessed 4.2 billion UPI transactions in total. In September, the NPCI recorded digital payments worth ₹6.54 lakh crore via 3.65 billion UPI transactions. WhatsApp Pay looks to accelerate growth in India with significant investments over next six months

Four in five insurance policies were bought by users with expired covers, the company added. “We aim to double down on this early momentum to drive insurance adoption in the country in line with the IRDAI’s [Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India] vision of insurance for all by 2047, while working closely with our insurance partners to make insurance products simple, affordable and accessible to all,” Prannay Batra, head of general insurance at PhonePe, said. PhonePe launched car and bike insurance — in partnership with Bajaj Allianz General Insurance — in October 2021. The company allows its users to avail insurance without the need for any documents to be uploaded before the purchase and also view their policy documents instantly on the app. PhonePe users can avail the policy through the ‘My Money’ section of the digital payments app available on Android and iOS. The insurance products are listed under the insurance section. The Walmart-owned fintech startup has over 385 million registered — representing nearly one in four Indians. PhonePe sold a million two-wheeler insurance policies in less than 9 months

Digital payments platform PhonePe to hire 2800 people by the end of this year

<ul><li><keyword id="1518229" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="lenskart" source="Orion">Lenskart</keyword> and <keyword id="14005730" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mirae-asset-capital" source="Orion">Mirae Asset Capital</keyword> have engaged with <keyword id="2777173" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="razorpay" source="Orion">Razorpay</keyword> for online transactions.</li><li>According to a Razorpay report, stock trading and mutual funds saw tremendous growth in transaction volumes.</li><li>The overall volume of digital payments has gained momentum over the last few years and saw a growth of 33% year-on-year during the financial year (FY) 2021-2022.</li></ul>Eyewear brand Lenskart and financial services conglomerate Mirae Asset Capital Markets have engaged Razorpay to enable online transactions on their platforms, the company said on Monday. “As a brand with a multichannel presence and transactions conducted with D2C and B2B partnerships, we needed a transparent and reliable payment gateway to lead the business transactions in all our retail environments. Today, with partners like Razorpay, we are catering to a customer base of over a million users,” said <keyword id="281032" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indranil-chakravarty" source="Orion">Indranil Chakravarty</keyword>, chief business officer, Aqualens and Lenskart. According to a Razorpay report, other than e-commerce, food and travel sectors, the online transaction volumes of stock trading and mutual funds also grew at 75% and 100% respectively in 2022 as compared to the year before. “Given our fully digital business model, we are happy to have partnered with Razorpay in our journey at offering the best investment solutions to our customers in the most seamless way possible,” said Arun Chaudhry, director and chief business officer at Mirae Asset Capital Markets. <keyword id="3519846" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rahul-kothari" source="Orion">Rahul Kothari</keyword>, chief business officer at Razorpay said that millions of businesses can benefit from the enormous growth digital medium offers. “We look forward to empowering them with a full-stack financial solution that acts as their central nervous system for everything payments and business banking,” said othari. The overall volume of digital payments has gained momentum over the last few years and saw a growth of 33% year-on-year in FY22. Around 7,422 crore digital payment transactions were recorded during this period, up from 5,554 crore transactions seen in FY21, a report by the <keyword id="3524863" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ministry-of-electronics" source="Orion">Ministry of Electronics</keyword> and IT (MeitY) says. <ul><li>VC investments in India softened in the first quarter of 2023 but expected to pick up in the latter half of 2023 says a KPMG report. </li><li>This quarter, VC investors were inclined to make smaller investments in startups with more reliable valuations. </li><li>In Q1 2023, VC investment in Asia declined significantly, dropping from $25.5 billion in Q4 2022 to just $13.5 billion.</li></ul>VC investment in India has softened in the January-March quarter of 2023 as investors were picky and scrutinized potential deals more intensely, says a Venture Pulse report by KPMG. VC investments went down to $2.1 billion in the quarter, down by 77% as compared to the same quarter last year when VCs poured in $9.1 billion into the market. “Despite the current slowdown in VC funding, macro factors in India remained relatively strong compared to other jurisdictions, which is driving optimism that the country will see a bounce back in VC investment in the later half of 2023,” said the report. The FOMO effect VC investments in Q1 of 2023 hit a 11-quarter low, as VC investments were at $2.1 billion last in the second quarter of 2020 – right when the lockdowns had started. Soon after however came a boom time. KPMG says that Fear of Missing Out or FOMO drove a lot of VC investment in India in 2021 and early 2022. However, without the FOMO effect is now gone and VCs enhanced their focus on startup performance and profitability. “The biggest change in India is that the euphoria for deals has died down. The FOMO has gone. The big ticket deals have also dried up, which has had an outsized impact on our total investment numbers,” says Nitish Poddar, partner and national leader, PE KPMG in India. Fintech was still a major area of investment, with large deals such as PhonePe, NoBroker, KreditBee, and Insurance Dekho. Agtech and gaming also saw increased interest. However, edtech interest declined in Q1 2023 after a period of high enthusiasm. “But despite the visible decline, it’s important to know that a lot is still happening in India. The macros here are still very good. We’re still seeing a lot of funding in pre-series A deals. And we’re still seeing a lot of new micro funds being raised in the country — funds under $100 million with check sizes from $1–5 million,” says Poddar. VC investments in Asia decline, Down rounds go up In Q1 2023, VC investment in Asia declined significantly, dropping from $25.5 billion in Q4 2022 to just $13.5 billion. This was the lowest quarter for VC investment in the region since Q2 2015, with several factors contributing to the decline. In China, a surge in Covid-19 cases impacted VC activity prior to the New Year holidays. Hong Kong was affected by rising interest rates and a slowdown in IPO activity, while India experienced investors becoming more selective with their investments. Japan was the only country in the region to see an increase in investment during Q1 2023, but the total was still far lower than Q1 2022. The data also shows that down rounds (when the pre-money valuation of a fundraising round is lower than the post-money valuation of the round previous) has gone up significantly in 2023 as compared to the last year, the report reveals. In Q1 2023, the global VC investment trend showed a decline in each quarter following its peak of over $200 billion in Q1 2022. By Q1 2023, the total VC investment worldwide had dropped significantly, falling well below $60 billion. The uncertain global market, which is impacted by factors such as rising interest rates, domestic and geopolitical challenges, economic concerns, and the war in Ukraine, meant that no region was immune to the changing market conditions. This resulted in investors becoming increasingly cautious and risk-averse, leading to a reduction in VC investment activity.

FOMO out, scrutiny in: VC investments fall 77% in Q1 2023 says KPMG

Over<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/how-indias-digital-payments-ecosystem-has-evolved-in-the-last-one-year/slidelist/90595832.cms"> 45 billion transactions</a> were carried out through the unified payments interface (<keyword id="6358921" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="upi" source="Orion">UPI</keyword>) in the fiscal year 2022, between April 2021 and March 2022. These transactions accumulated up to ₹84 lakh crore in the same time frame. This was nearly double of 22 billion transactions worth ₹41 lakh crore that was carried out in the previous fiscal year. This leaves no doubt that UPI is currently among one of the most popular digital payments systems available in India. Walmart-owned <keyword id="6357886" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="phonepe" source="Orion">PhonePe</keyword> has facilitated most of it, especially in the last fiscal. A simple calculation based on the monthly payments data shared by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has revealed that PhonePe carried out 20.7 billion <keyword id="4052276" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="upi-transactions" source="Orion">UPI transactions</keyword> in FY2022. This is roughly 46% of the overall transactions. It was followed by <keyword id="2750705" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-pay" source="Orion">Google Pay</keyword>, which facilitated 35%, or 15.8 billion, of such transactions. <keyword id="6357120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm" source="Orion">Paytm</keyword>, or rather Paytm Payments Bank, continued to be a distant third biggest UPI app in the same fiscal with close to 13% market share. <keyword id="790242" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="whatsapp" source="Orion">WhatsApp</keyword> carried out 17 million transactions. <div type="image" title="WhatsApp carried out only 17 million UPI transactions last fiscal, PhonePe was at 20 billion" msid="90728801" hostid="261"></div> Well, this was all about the volume of transactions. The values or the amount transferred by these apps also showed a similar trend in FY2022. PhonePe continued to retain the top spot by facilitating transactions worth ₹39 lakh crore, which represents 46% of the overall transaction value. It was followed by Google Pay with 36% of overall transactions, with transactions worth ₹31 lakh crore. Paytm carried close to 8% UPI transaction in terms of number of value. Luring customers through cashbacks also helped the likes of Google Pay and PhonePe grow in India. Apart from the cashback, WhatsApp has also introduced the ₹ symbol in its chats for payments. Even the camera icon in the chat composer allows users to scan any QR codes.
