New Delhi, Jun 26 () Flipkart-owned PhonePe on Friday said it has partnered with ICICI Bank on UPI multi-bank model, giving its users the option to create and use multiple UPI IDs with ICICI and Yes Bank's handles. "PhonePe has partnered with ICICI Bank on UPI multi-bank model giving its users the option to create and use multiple UPI IDs with ICICI Bank's '@ibl' handle and YES Bank's '@ybl' handle on the PhonePe app," a statement said. This addition, in partnership with ICICI Bank, enables quick and contactless payments to over 200 million registered PhonePe users, the statement added. In March, PhonePe had suffered a service outage for nearly 24 hours that had started after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) placed Yes Bank on moratorium at that time. Its team had worked overnight with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and ICICI Bank to ensure all its services are up within a day. PhonePe, at that time, had said it was working on adding more payment service provider (PSP) partners to offer its users more options for UPI transactions, even as it continued to engage with Yes Bank. "At PhonePe, our effort has always been to give customers more choice while making their transaction experience seamless. Offering the '@ibl' handle to the users on our platform further solidifies PhonePe's already fruitful association with ICICI Bank," PhonePe Vice-President (Financial Services and Payments) Hemant Gala said on Friday. With customers now being able to choose between multiple handles for their UPI IDs, PhonePe has achieved another key milestone in its journey towards making payments easy, secure and accessible to all, he added. Bijith Bhaskar, head (digital channels and partnership) at ICICI Bank, said that with an increase in adoption of digital payments, ICICI Bank is partnering with PhonePe for extending UPI services. "We believe that with this partnership, both ICICI Bank and PhonePe would be able to capitalise on their immense domain strengths for empowering customers to a seamless and simple digital payment experience," he added. New Delhi, Mar 9 () PhonePe on Monday said it is actively working on adding more payment service provider (PSP) partners to offer its users more options for UPI transactions, even as the Flipkart-owned company continues to engage with crisis-ridden Yes Bank. PhonePe had seen a service outage for nearly 24 hours, which started immediately after the RBI placed Yes Bank on moratorium on March 5. Its team worked overnight with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and new UPI partner, ICICI bank, to ensure all its services are up within a day. "We were actively working on adding other PSP partners, this is also as per the recent NPCI advisory... PhonePe will shortly be launching an additional VPA (virtual payment address) with ICICI bank," PhonePe founder and CEO Sameer Nigam told . He added that once the Yes Bank moratorium is over, "it will mean PhonePe users will have a choice of two handles from two different banks to work with". Following the moratorium, Yes Bank faced restrictions, including caps on payments that impacted its ability to settle transactions on behalf of partners like PhonePe. Other players like Edenred, which offers services like meal cards, also suffered disruption. Foreign travellers and students who used prepaid forex cards from Yes Bank are also facing issues. While PhonePe declined to comment on the banks it is in talks with, sources said PhonePe is engaged in dialogue with State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and RBL Bank. Nigam said services on the PhonePe app were fully resumed on March 6 for all users and merchant partners, with ICICI bank as our new banking partner. "All PhonePe consumer @ybl handles are working as before and all 10 million of our merchant QR codes are working seamlessly as well. The platform processed over Rs 4,000 crore worth of transactions in 24 hours and saw its largest-ever volume of user traffic in a single day (with over 70 million app sessions)," he added. How to withdraw cash from ATM without debit card

New Delhi, Mar 8 () Digital payments platform PhonePe on Sunday said its transactions and user traffic have bounced back to normal, after being affected for 24 hours due to restrictions on Yes Bank. Over 25 million customers used the PhonePe app on Saturday showing their trust in the platform, according to a statement by the company. The digital payments platform has bounced back hard in the past 24 hours. The platform processed over Rs 4,000 crore worth of transactions in 24 hours and saw its largest-ever volume of user traffic in a single day (with over 70 million app sessions), it said. PhonePe saw a service outage for nearly 24 hours, which started immediately after the RBI placed Yes Bank on moratorium on March 5. The PhonePe team worked overnight with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and new UPI partner ICICI bank to ensure all its services are up within a day, the company said. All merchant payment settlements were restored by Friday noon and all consumer wallet, credit and debit card payments were restored by 3 pm. All UPI services were restored by Friday night, with PhonePe users continuing to use their UPI @ybl handles. This ensured that there was a seamless transition for all of its 20 crore customers, it added. Sameer Nigam, founder and CEO of PhonePe, said, "Friday was an extraordinarily difficult situation with little precedence. We are grateful to RBI, NPCI, Yes Bank and ICICI for working collectively to ensure that millions of our customers and merchants were not inconvenienced a minute longer than necessary." The outage on the PhonePe platform also led to playful banter between the company and its bigger rival Paytm. "Inviting you to @PaytmBank #UPI platform. It already has huge adoption and can seamlessly scale manifold to handle your business. Let's get you back up, fast!," Paytm Payments Bank tweeted on Friday. However, PhonePe shot back to saying Paytm Payments Bank platform is not seamlessly scalable otherwise the company would have themselves approached it. Digital transaction traffic bounces back on PhonePe following service outage due to Yes Bank crisis

Mumbai, Mar 9 () After the impact on payments systems following moratorium on Yes Bank, the National Payments Council of India (NPCI) on Monday said it had in 2017 advised third-party apps to have a multi-bank approach. PhonePe's exclusive reliance on Yes Bank to act as its payments partner had resulted in the popular app being unable to render Unified Payment Interface (UPI) transactions for a day last week. "NPCI has been a proponent of the multi-bank model, to ensure full resilience of the ecosystem... In September 2017, NPCI advised large UPI payment app providers for a multi-bank approach," an official statement said. It added that there are already few payment apps operating on the multi-bank model and some of them are in the final phases of migration. Following the service outage, PhonePe switched to ICICI Bank and was able to restart its UPI services late on Saturday. Meanwhile, NPCI, whose role has been welcomed by both ICICI Bank and PhonePe for the help, also appreciated the efforts undertaken by the system for showing the "highest sense of the consumer first approach". NPCI said the last-leg payment service providers also prefer to work with multiple parties to ensure high availability of payment systems, and where required, the payment providers identified alternative partner banks who quickly stepped in to address contingency requirements. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI)-promoted body said payment systems have had "minimal disruption" and non-Yes Bank customers can make payments for all their daily requirements. Unified Payments Interface or <keyword id="6358921" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="upi">UPI</keyword> is one of the most popular payment systems in the country. It accounts for a major part of online transactions in India. Apart from banking apps, there are several popular third-party apps like <keyword id="6357886" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="phonepe">PhonePe</keyword>, <keyword id="2750705" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-Pay">Google Pay</keyword>, Paytm and Amazon that support <keyword id="3679109" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="UPI-payments">UPI payments</keyword>. Nirmala Sitharaman, the Finance Minister on Saturday <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/no-mdr-charges-applicable-on-payment-via-rupay-upi-from-jan-1-fm/articleshow/73008482.cms">announced</a> that Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) charges will be waived off for UPI and RuPay transactions starting from January 1. Razorpay, a Bengaluru-based payment gateway reported that in <a href="https://razorpay.com/blog/upi-preferred-payment-mode-october-2019-data/">October 2019</a>, UPI accounted for 50.49% of transactions on its platform. What is UPI? Unified Payments Interface or UPI is an immediate real-time payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NCPI). It was introduced in April 2016 as a pilot project and is regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Soon after it was launched, banks announced their own UPI apps. It also paved the way for third-party apps such as PhonePe and Google Pay (earlier Google Tez). Within three weeks of the launch of its UPI app, ICICI bank <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/icici-banks-upi-app-is-re-defining-banking-reaches-1-lakh-downloads/articleshow/54545741.cms">revealed</a> that its app had crossed 1 lakh downloads. UPI 2.0 announced with enhanced features Two years after the launch of UPI, the NPCI announced <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/upi-2-0-heres-what-you-need-to-know/articleshow/65444928.cms">UPI 2.0</a>, a revamped version of UPI with several new features. The main highlight of UPI 2.0 is that it increased the per transaction cap to ₹2 lakh and the ability to link overdraft accounts. Earlier, users could only link their savings and current accounts to UPI. UPI 2.0 also has features like one-time mandate that allows users to pre-authorize a transaction, Invoice-in-inbox which allows users to verify the invoice before making a payment and more. What is UPI and how does it work?

New Delhi, <keyword id="2461546" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="FinTech">FinTech</keyword> services company <keyword id="7349800" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="bharatpe">BharatPe</keyword> on Monday announced that it has raised ₹139 crore (nearly $20 million) in debt from <keyword id="4844054" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alteria-Capital">Alteria Capital</keyword> and <keyword id="6653" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-bank">ICICI Bank</keyword>. The company raised ₹90 crore in debt from Alteria Capital and ₹49 crore from ICICI Bank. The company has raised a total of ₹199 crore in debt to date. "We have committed ourselves to have $700 miilion of <keyword id="6362287" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="loans">loans</keyword> to small merchants and kirana store owners by March 2023 and are hoping to on-board more institutional debt partners in the near future," said Ashneer Grover, <keyword id="170488" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="co-founder">Co-Founder</keyword> and CEO, BharatPe. "We aim to become a digital bank that is the one-stop destination for merchants for all kinds of financial services and this tranche of funds will get things rolling". The company is disbursing loans of ₹200 crore per month to merchant partners currently and has set a target of disbursing ₹1,000 crore of loans in the FY21. BharatPe gets $20 million in debt funding from Alteria Capital and ICICI Bank — aims to raise a total of $700 million in the next two years

At the top, the UPI clocked over 19.65 billion transactions in volume and Rs 32.5 lakh crore in terms of value. The UPI transactions volume and value almost doubled since last year as it recorded about an 88 per cent increase in volume and over 71 per cent increase in value in Q3 as compared to the same quarter last year, according to <keyword id="1925688" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="worldline-india" source="Orion">Worldline India</keyword>'s 'Digital Payments Report' for the third quarter. The top three UPI apps in terms of volume and value were PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm Payments Bank App. The top five remitter Banks were <keyword id="6354731" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="state-bank-of-india" source="Orion">State Bank of India</keyword>, <keyword id="6357149" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hdfc-bank" source="Orion">HDFC Bank</keyword>, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank, and ICICI Bank, whereas the top 5 beneficiary banks were Paytm Payments Bank, YES Bank, State Bank of <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, Axis Bank, and ICICI Bank. UPI person-to-merchant (P2M) and person-to-person (P2P) emerged as the most chosen payment method among consumers, accounting for 42 per cent of total transaction volume. This was followed by credit and debit card payments, which accounted for 7 per cent of volume and 14 per cent of value. "The swift adoption of digital payments can be witnessed with each passing quarter. Popular payment instruments like UPI, cards, PPIs are already clocking over 23 billion transactions in a quarter," said Ramesh Narasimhan, CEO, India, Worldline. Q3 data indicates healthy usage of credit cards and growth in the average ticket size. For credit cards, it is Rs 4,833; for debit cards, it is Rs 2,073; for UPI P2M, it is Rs 738; for UPI, P2P it is 2,576; for prepaid cards, it is 473; and for M-wallet, it is Rs 382. The total transaction between credit cards and debit cards comes to around 65 per cent and the remaining 35 per cent has been shared between UPI P2P, UPI P2M, and prepaid cards, the report showed. As of September 2022, the overall number of POS terminals installed by merchant-acquiring banks had surpassed 7 million. In Q3 2022, POS deployment increased by more than 41 per cent reaching 7.03 million, when compared to the same quarter of the previous year. In the online space, e-commerce (shopping for goods and services), gaming, utility and financial services contributed to over 86 per cent of the transaction in terms of volume and 47 per cent in terms of value. By the end of the third quarter, there were 1.01 billion credit and debit cards in circulation. Credit card volume and value were 725 million and Rs 3.5 lakh crore in Q3 2022, respectively. In the third quarter of 2022, the volume and value of debit card transactions were 907 million and Rs 1.88 lakh crore, respectively, the report said. At least 58.78 million FASTags have been issued till September, with 36 banks. Digital payments in India touch Rs 38.3 lakh cr at over 23 bn transactions

UPI’s growth in India and its interoperability has left behind other players who focussed on mobile payments alone. “PPI’s (pre-paid instruments like mobile wallets) which were once expected to scale up rapidly in the retail digital payments industry have clearly not achieved the success that they were expected to achieve. While there could be several explanations for this, one of the main reasons we believe is due to strong competition from UPI,” said a report by JM Financial from September 2020. However, players like Paytm which isn’t a big shareholder in UPI, won’t be affected by the new capping as it is a PSP (Payment service provider). WhatsApp Pay’s potential India is the first country where Facebook had begun its tryst with payments back in 2018 when WhatsApp began beta testing payments in the country. Since then, the company had met with several regulatory hurdles relating to data localisation, which was followed by a promise of storing data locally and WhatsApp Pay submitting revised data localization compliance this year. However, even while it hadn’t officially rolled out, experts have been betting on its popularity because of its existing 400 million user base in India. Analysts at Bernstein (from a June 2020 report) expected WhatsApp Pay’s penetration to increase to 30% (from the current 10%) by FY25. Abhijit Bose, WhatsApp India head, had also shared plans for the company’s foray into financial services in India in July 2020. WhatsApp will soon be driving its financial inclusion push in India with its foray into lending, micro-insurance, and micro-pension products. WhatsApp is currently running pilot programs for the same. “Based on the results, we will co-invest and scale. Even a small conversion of the demand will translate into an infusion of significant savings into the financial system,” <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2020/07/22/whatsapp-to-pilot-projects-to-deliver-credit-insurance-and-pension-to-users-in-india/">said Bose</a> then. JioMart – the silent winner Amidst all of this, a beneficiary from WhatsApp Pay’s entry would be India’s richest man’s e-commerce bet – Mukesh Ambani’s JioMart. “Payments remains the missing link, the tie up could be a potential game changer with WhatsApp Pay integration with JioMart,” said the report by Bernstein. WhatsApp Pay’s UPI approval and potential tie-up with JioMart after Facebook pumped $5.7 billion in Reliance earlier this year, will see JioMart gain by offering easy ordering and payment facility to its users through WhatsApp. “RIL’s foray into the space leveraging its large ofﬂine distribution capabilities, and integration of ability to order groceries through WhatsApp, a platform with &gt;400 mn MAUs in India,” said a Goldman Sachs report. WhatsApp Pay UPI is now live while Google Pay, PhonePe have already got the first sting

India’s top brands have borne the brunt of the global economic downturn in 2023. The combined value of Kantar BrandZ’s top-75 Indian brands shed 4% of their value to $379 billion in 2023. Yet, they have fared better than their global counterparts, as its global list has shed 20% of its value. Most of this loss in brand value was seen in Indian tech brands whose value shrunk by 14%. The brands have a major presence in international markets, and have been impacted by global pressures, recession threats and geopolitical instability, says Kantar. “If you exclude tech, the combined brand value is quite stable,” said Soumya Mohanty, managing director and chief client officer, South Asia, Insights Division of Kantar. TCS on the top, as usual The spot of India’s most valuable brand, however, is retained by tech giant TCS. It has shed 6% of its value but has fared better than tech as a sector. “TCS has a strong corporate reputation which makes it more likely to retain clients and business. It can also help enable customer retention which is also a factor that adds to brand value,” Deepender Rana, executive managing director of South Asia Insights Division at Kantar told Business Insider India. Infosys’ brand value dropped by 17%, while HCL Tech’s brand value rose by 3%. Both these brands made it to the top 10. Wipro’s brand value dropped by a sharp 42%. The rest of the list is dominated by banks, telecom companies with only one consumer company, Asian Paints in the top 10. risers of the year. TVS, valued at $1.9 billion, occupies the 51st rank. The company has gained 59% in value and leapt 24 places thanks to a number of successful product launches and a 10-year partnership with BMW that gives it leverage in markets such as Europe, the US and Canada. Mahindra is valued at $2.01 billion and occupies the 47th rank. Mahindra, which grew its value by 48%, made itself incredibly meaningful in consumers’ eyes, and also significantly boosted its salience. The sector saw the second highest category growth of 19%, after tobacco. Royal Enfield’s value also swelled, thanks to Indians’ preference for premium products. A lot of Indian auto brands, like Tata Motors, also entered EV markets and are able to meet consumer needs better, observes Rana. “Auto companies’ value declined during Covid and made a comeback after they dealt with supply chain issues and dealt with bottlenecks,” said Mohanty. India’s largest auto company Maruti Suzuki, however, shed 5% of its brand value, while Bajaj Auto’s brand value went up by 9%. The value in finance Financial services brands have grown their brand value by 6% with 16 brands and contributing to the biggest chunk of the total brand value. Their growth is attributed to growth in digital banking and Axis Bank whose value swelled 28% and now ranks at 17. ICICI Bank which ranks at no 6 also has seen its brand value swell by 18%. Two of this year’s new entrants also belong to the fintech sector — PhonePe and Cred. This is in spite of the fact that tech as a sector saw its value go down during the year. PhonePe has made its debut on the list at No.21 with a value of $4.4 billion. It has quickly become India’s leading digital payment app by investing heavily in the strength of its infrastructure, building connections with partner banks, and developing a huge network of merchant acceptance points, said Kantar. Meanwhile, Cred has entered at no 48 with a brand value of $2 billion. “Growth of credit and other digital trends are adding to the value of fintechs. There is a need for these services and brands are doing a good job of providing them,” Mohanty tells Business Insider India. PayTM, Zomato, Swiggy, Flipkart, Naukri, Oyo and Nykaa have shed value; while Byju’s hasn’t been included in the list this year. FMCG as a sector has seen its brand value remain stable during the year.
