<br />In October 2018, Paytm had partnered with SoftBank and Yahoo Japan to offer digital payment solutions in Japan. Through this collaboration, Yahoo Japan suspended its own wallet giving PayPay direct access to all its Yahoo wallet consumers. <br /><br />SoftBank is one of the major investors in Paytm. In 2017, Softbank had made its biggest bet in the Indian ecosystem by pumping in $1.4 billion in Paytm. <br /><br />Paytm is not the only Indian startup backed by Softbank which went to Japan. Ritesh Agarwal’s OYO where Softbank is a key investor, entered the Japanese market, thanks to its famous backer. In April 2019, OYO announced its partnership with SoftBank Corp and SoftBank Vision fund to launch Oyo Hotels Japan.<br />

It also set a target of 12 billion transactions by FY20. <br /><br />The company said that the fast growth came due to the wide adoption of Paytm’s digital payments solutions across sectors like retail payments, fees, utility payments, travel booking, entertainment, games and more. <br />

The two-way race to the top in India’s <keyword id="35621" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-commerce">e-commerce</keyword> market could soon be crashed by a third contender. <br /><br /><keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword> Mall, the e-commerce arm of the country’s payments upstart Paytm, has reportedly closed the final round of a $450 million (₹30 billion) cash infusion from its international backers, <keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Softbank">Softbank</keyword> and <keyword id="302749" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alibaba">Alibaba</keyword>. <br /><br />The investment, which was announced in April 2018, was completed in four tranches, with ₹26 billion coming from Softbank and the remainder from the Chinese e-commerce giant. As a result, Softbank now owns a 21% stake in the business while Alibaba has a 46% stake. <br /><br />The funding round, which comes soon after Softbank agreed to sell its shares in Flipkart to Walmart, is said to value Paytm Mall at as much as $2 billion. While this is still a far cry away from the enterprise value of Flipkart and Amazon’s Indian business, it is by no means insignificant. <br /><br /><strong>Ambitious growth plans</strong><br /><br />Paytm Mall commenced operations in early 2017 with a $200 million investment from Alibaba. According to a blog post in April, it extended its reach <a href="https://blog.paytmmall.com/celebrating-our-one-year-anniversary-with-a-bang-48dda3f1e9a8">to 700 towns and 19,000 zip codes</a> within its first year of business. <br /><br />The company has ambitious growth targets, and it will use its newly-bolstered finances to try and achieve them. After closing fiscal 2018 with a gross merchandising volume (a measure of total sales) of $3 billion, it plans to triple this figure to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/paytm-mall-raises-rs-2900-crore-from-softbank-alibaba/articleshow/63584679.cms">$10 billion </a>this fiscal year. <br /><br />Given that Paytm has no inventory of its own, it primarily facilitates the online sales of offline businesses. This year, it also plans to ramp up its focus on offline store partnerships, given that 60% of its online sales come from offline stores. It has ties with around 75,000 of these stores, and plans to onboard twice as many stores to its portal by 2019. <br /><br />To enable these stores to sell online, Paytm will offer them devices for invoicing and inventory management as well as insurance on these devices. Its Point of Sale (PoS) technology will be gradually rolled out across its retail partners <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/startup/paytm-mall-targets-25-growth-in-gross-revenue-for-partner-stores-by-end-of-fy19-2572365.html">over the course of this year</a>. The cloud-based technology allows shopkeepers to manage orders, get real-time data on inventory and sales and bill customers.<br /><br />The Indian e-commerce market is expected to record <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indias-e-commerce-market-is-expected-to-record-nearly-33-billion-in-sales-this-year/articleshow/64507738.cms">$33 billion</a> in sales this year, eventually reaching $72 billion by 2022. These figures could actually be much higher if Paytm Mall makes good on its growth plans. <br />

The company has been trying to cut down on losses since the time it carved out its e-commerce arm from the parent company with a <a href="https://entrackr.com/2018/01/paytm-brings-losses-40/">transfer of assets</a> accounting to ₹6.2 billion at the time of hive-off.<br /><br />However, despite the widening loss, Paytm has remarkably retained its list of investors. The company has counted on investments from Berkshire Hathaway after Alibaba Group and SoftBank Group Corporation that are the <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/business/losses-widen-for-paytms-parent#gs.Dp5tQ0o">largest stakeholders</a> for the company with 40% and 20% stake, respectively. Paytm mall has been putting in all efforts to compete with the players Amazon India and Walmart Inc.’s Flipkart. Nearly 60% of its sales are recorded from offline stores. According to a recent report, Paytm mall has 10 million merchants and is expected to double within a year.<br /><br />The company seems to be looking at a broader aspect of growth since it has launched a mobile-based payment facility ‘PayPay’ in collaboration with SoftBank and Yahoo Japan to get into the global markets. The Paytm founder indicated that they are now going to plan their entry in Europe as their long-term agenda is the expansion of the number of users that roll into electronic transactions.<br />

Paytm’s losses increased exponentially in FY18 thanks to advertising, personnel costs

The company that invested approximately $2.5 billion in Flipkart in FY16 through its Vision Fund, is expected to make $4 billion in stock sales.<br /><br />According to reports, SoftBank was considering not selling the Flipkart shares due to many options, mainly due to the tax issues related to short-term capital gains. Another reason could be that SoftBank saw a potential valuation increase in Flipkart. Buffett's company poured about $300 million into Paytm in August 2018, valuing it at roughly $10 billion at the time.</p><p>Berkshire still owns 17 million shares, or a 2.8% stake, Paytm's IPO filing shows. The fintech startup was privately valued at $16 billion in November 2019, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-11-25/paytm-is-said-to-raise-1-billion-from-softbank-and-others">according to Bloomberg</a>. If it secures that valuation as a public company, Berkshire's shares would be worth about $480 million - a 60% gain in three years.</p><p>Buffett and his team are poised to cash out some of those profits. Berkshire and other Paytm investors such as SoftBank, Alibaba, and Jack Ma's Ant Financial have agreed to sell an undisclosed portion of their stakes during the IPO.</p><p>Berkshire's investment in Paytm - a private, foreign, and unprofitable technology startup - might seem out of character for Buffett, who famously sticks to established US businesses that he understands deeply such as Coca-Cola, or American Express.</p><p>In fact it was Todd Combs, one of Buffett's portfolio managers, who negotiated the deal. Paytm's CEO <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/expert-view/more-than-money-berkshires-todd-combs-coming-on-paytm-board-is-the-best-outcome-vijay-shekhar-sharma/articleshow/65578696.cms">confirmed that fact</a> to ET Now, and Combs recently retired from the fintech's board. Combs has spearheaded several of Berkshire's recent tech bets, including its investments in StoneCo, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/warre-buffett-berkshire-hathaway-570-million-snowflake-ipo-rare-unicorn-2020-9">Snowflake</a>, and most likely <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/warren-buffett-berkshire-hathaway-invest-500-million-nubank-brazil-fintech-2021-6">Nubank last month</a>.</p><p>Paytm, previously known as One97 Communications, posted a 10% drop in revenue to the equivalent of $427 million in the year to March 31. That reflected a 38% slump in e-commerce and cloud services revenue, which offset sales growth of 24% in the payment and financial-services division. However, a sharp reduction in marketing and promotional expenses meant Paytm's after-tax loss shrunk 42% to $228 million.</p>

Also, its entry into insurance sectors has been rejected by regulators. This could have been worth ₹8,736 crore ($1.1 billion), at the IPO issue price. <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword>’s parent company <keyword id="4546857" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="one97communications-limited">One97Communications Limited</keyword> just received $1.4 billion funding from Japan’s leading Internet and telecom major <keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword>.<br /><br /> This is the largest round from a single investor in India. Paytm said the investment will help it grow its leadership in the online payment system.<br /><br /> “It will also complement our plan to invest Rs 10,000 Cr (approx $1.6 Bn) over the next three to five years towards our commitment to enable half a billion Indians to join the mainstream economy,” Paytm stated in a blog.<br /><br /> Paytm said it will continue to innovate and expand into new online and offline use-cases.<br /><br /> Meanwhile, <keyword id="3236791" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paytm-payments-bank">Paytm Payments Bank</keyword> is also becoming operational from next week and will be headed by CEO Renu Satti.<br /><br /> Meanwhile, Paytm founder <keyword id="198636" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vijay-Shekhar-Sharma">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword> will hold the majority share in Paytm Payments Bank, with the rest being held by One97 Communications.<br /><br />

It commenced similar discussions with Zomato's rival <keyword id="6358977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy">Swiggy</keyword> last year.</strong></li><li><strong>India's <keyword id="6376068" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-delivery">food delivery</keyword> market is estimated to be growing at a quarterly rate of 15%.</strong></li><li><strong>Softbank is expected to make an investment decision by the end of 2018.</strong></li></ul><br />In the aftermath of Walmart’s $16 billion acquisition of e-commerce upstart Flipkart, Softbank, a Japanese tech giant and investor, looks set to double down on the Indian market. The Economic Times <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/softbank-now-in-talks-to-put-zomato-on-its-menu/articleshow/64198467.cms">reported today </a>that Softbank was engaged in initial talks with Zomato, a food delivery service, to take a stake in the company.<br /><br />In fact, a source told ET that Softbank was scouring the Indian food delivery market for deals, with plans to infuse anywhere between $200 million and $400 million in a worthy candidate. The Japanese company had reportedly commenced talks with Swiggy, another food delivery service, late last year to invest as much as $250 million in the latter’s growth, although nothing seems to have come of it yet. <br /><br />India’s food delivery market, which is dominated by Zomato and Swiggy, is growing fast. Earlier this year, RedSeer Consulting, a research and consulting firm, estimated that the market grew at a quarterly rate of <a href="http://redseer.com/newsletters/food-tech-market-updates-feb18/">15% last year</a>, with daily order volumes more than doubling to 460,000 by September 2017. In April, RedSeer also pegged the size of the market <a href="http://redseer.com/newsletters/food-tech-market-updates-apr18/">at $740m</a>. <br /><br />The increasing level of interest in India’s food delivery market is thought to be reminiscent of the investor hype surrounding ride-hailing services a few years ago when Uber entered the country. Interestingly, Softbank has a stake in both Ola and Uber. Both companies have or had their own food delivery services. Ola <a href="https://www.olacabs.com/media/press/ola-and-delivery-hero-join-forces-in-india">acquired Foodpanda</a>, a food ordering app, in December last year with plans to invest $200 million in the company. Meanwhile UberEats was launched in May 2017 and <a href="https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/uber-eats-sees-50-pc-growth-first-year-operations-focus-tier-2-markets-81332">is said to be going strong</a>. <br /><br />Softbank is expected to make an investment decision by the end of 2018. Last month, the company’s CEO, Masayoshi Son, said that Softbank was on track to invest <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/set-to-overachieve-on-10-billion-india-investment-target-softbank-ceo-masayoshi-son/articleshow/63966163.cms">more than its original target of $10 billion</a> in India by 2024. It is currently said to be mulling <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/softbank-in-talks-to-invest-big-money-in-paytm-mall/articleshow/64152935.cms">a $3 billion investment</a> in Paytm Mall, the e-commerce arm of Paytm, in which it already owns a 21% stake, pending a possible exit from Flipkart. <br /><br />The news of the possible investment in Zomato follows speculation regarding the launch of a <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/business/2018/05/16/softbank-s-son-is-said-to-eye-another-100-billion-for-fund-2-0#gs.3Va=5TY">second Vision Fund </a>by Softbank.
