India's mobile payments revolution has been making waves globally and has become a model for other countries as they take steps towards digitisation. After Singapore's integration in the UPI network, Japan is also considering a similar move. In an interview, Japan's Minister for Digital Transformation has said that Japan is "seriously thinking about joining the Indian UPI payments system". Pioneer of India's mobile and quick response (QR)-based payments, Paytm's Vijay Shekhar Sharma on Saturday welcomed this news and expressed his delight and pride over this. PayPay leverages Paytm's technology to drive mobile payments in Japan and has in fact seen immense popularity. Thank you @AshwiniVaishnaw sir @konotarogomame " India and Singapore on February 21 linked their respective online payments systems -- Unified Payments Interface (UPI) of India and PayNow of Singapore -- for seamless cross-border transactions between the two countries. The virtual launch function was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong. The linkage of these two payment systems of both countries would enable residents of both countries to the faster and more cost-efficient transfer of cross-border remittances. People in both the countries will be able to send money real-time via QR-code based or simply by entering mobile numbers linked to the bank account. Seriously thinking about joining the Indian UPI payments system says Japanese official

Since the announcement of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=demonetisation&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">demonetization</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=paytm&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Paytm</a> has been raking in money like never before. One of the biggest beneficiaries of demonetization has been <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword> as people have moved to cashless payments owing to cash crunch. 
 
Within 12 days, Paytm has witnessed over 7 million transactions worth Rs 120 crore a day. 
 
The mobile wallet is now four months ahead of its target and crossed $5 billion <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=gmv&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">GMV sales</a>. 
 
Gross Merchandise Value (GMV), which is an industry term for estimating the total worth of goods sold through a digital platform, for Paytm was $3 billion last year. 
 
"Paytm is registering over 7 million transactions worth Rs 120 crore in a day as millions of consumers and merchants across the country try mobile payments on the Paytm payment platform for the first time," said Sudhanshu Gupta, Vice President, Paytm. 
 
The company is currently doing more transactions than the combined average daily usage of credit and debit cards in India, he added. 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=digital+wallets&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Mobile wallet</a> companies including Paytm have seen manifold growth in transactions and new users coming on board with people turning to digital platforms as serpentine queues outside ATMs continuing to hassle cash-strapped public. 
 
"Offline transactions now contribute to over 65 per cent of the overall business from 15 per cent about six months ago. We are also working on expanding our merchant network by 150,000 additional merchants," he said. 
 
Paytm has over 150 million mobile wallet users currently. 
 
Mobile payment transaction value in India is also likely to register over 150 per cent CAGR and cross Rs 2,000 trillion by FY 2021-22 from just over Rs 8 trillion as of FY 2015-16, the study titled Indian M-wallet market said.

 "We have sorted payment on wallet and we want to leverage that. We will drive and scale up payments business even today, while others have to build payments business," co-founder <keyword id="198636" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Vijay-Shekhar-Sharma">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword> told ET. 
 
Paytm has over 104 million mobile wallets and expects that to touch 150 million by March 2016. "We have an edge on timeline. The next year or a year and half, when these companies get started, we will still be playing the business," Sharma added. 
 
The above mentioned entities will take deposits, convey remittances and dispense payments to recipients, making them ideal for migrant workers who need to send money home. They can't lend to their customers, though. The business potential from serving millions of unbanked Indians to further the financial inclusion initiative of the government and the Reserve Bank had attracted most of the top business houses. Sharma said telcos such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Vodafone" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">Vodafone</a>, Airtel and Idea, which have experience in mobile remittances businesses, will start on a near-equal footing. 
 
"We don't do remittances, but our capability is in merchant transactions and personto- person payments," he said. He was confident that Paytm will be the first off the lock with its payments bank. "We want to be the first payments bank in the country. We have technology on our side, simple organisational structure to create, we have people recruitment on, which is critical, as we speak." Paytm, which officially got the licence last Monday, is scouting for a CEO with financial services and consulting background. Sharma is ooking for someone with a fresh outlook rather than someone with a banking background who is likely to bring in a traditional approach. The company is hiring 100 staff a month to kick-start its new business. <keyword id="3053539" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Paytm-Payment-Bank-Ltd">Paytm Payment Bank Ltd</keyword>, the new company formed to house the payments bank, will also house the mobile wallets business. The wallet license will be surrendered shortly to the RBI and will operate under the payments bank licence. The escrow account, which today is on a third party nationalized bank, will move to the <keyword id="3053537" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Paytm-Payment-Bank">Paytm Payment Bank</keyword>. 
 
By the end of March, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Alibaba+" target="_BLANK￿￿￿￿">Alibaba</a> Group-backed One97 Communications, he holding company of Paytm's businesses, will have streamlined its operations into payments bank and wallets, commerce and marketing, Sharma said. For its mobile commerce business, which is an online marketplace, Paytm expects to touch a gross merchandising value (GMV) of 1 lakh crore by 2020 from 12,000 crore currently. GMV is a measure of the maximum price of goods and services sold on a company’s platform and are higher than actual revenue. 
 Sharma is now focused on the payments bank. He holds 51% in Paytm Payment Bank, One97 Communications owns 39% and 10% is held by a subsidiary of One97 and Sharma. After another round of expected fund infusion of about $400 million by <keyword id="163405" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Alibaba-Group">Alibaba Group</keyword>, which is slated to increase its stake in One97 to 40% from 25% now, the Chinese giant will own roughly 20% indirectly in Paytm Payment Bank. 
 
Sharma said the payments bank doesn't need an equity relationship with a financial services firm. Rather, it needs banks as partners because customers would like to feed into a main bank due to restrictions on what payments banks can offer.

Paytm is soon coming up with India’s first payments bank

The Reserve Bank of India (<keyword id="30067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI">RBI</keyword>) has given permission to digital mobile wallet <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword> to officially launch its <keyword id="2324069" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Payments-Bank">payments bank</keyword>. The central bank had in-principle approved the <keyword id="3236791" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paytm-payments-bank">Paytm payments bank</keyword> last year in August. 
 In a blog, Paytm’s <keyword id="198636" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vijay-Shekhar-Sharma">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword> wrote the Paytm Payments Bank will build a new business model in banking industry. 
 
Paytm has been hogging headlines, especially after demonetisation. Now, it is also likely that Sunil Munjal and Saroj Poddar will buy a stake in Paytm, which may touch valuation of $6 billion if all goes well. 
 
Meanwhile, the payments bank will be another feather in Paytm’s hat. Paytm has been hiring in the top order for it.

Paytm gets permission to launch Paytm Payments Bank. Here’s what Vijay Shekhar Sharma said

Homegrown Paytm Payments Bank Limited (PPBL) on Wednesday said it supports and welcomes the proposed implementation of the <keyword id="3880260" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-payments-council-of-india" source="Orion">National Payments Council of India</keyword>'s (<keyword id="193629" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="npci" source="Orion">NPCI</keyword>) <keyword id="6358921" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="upi" source="Orion">UPI</keyword> market cap. With this, the UPI ecosystem in India will see further growth in a democratised manner, encouraging wider participation and ending the market concentration risk, the company said in a statement. PPBL, which owns <keyword id="6076084" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="paytm-upi" source="Orion">Paytm UPI</keyword>, is an NPCI-certified PSP (Payment Service Provider) and Issuer Bank for UPI transactions, and not a Third Party Application Provider (TPAP) and won't come under the purview of NPCI's market cap. The Bank is an Issuer and <keyword id="15597664" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="psp-bank" source="Orion">PSP Bank</keyword> in itself along with being an acquirer of UPI transactions on its own platform and serves the customer end-to-end in a transaction. The Bank continues to lead UPI payments as the largest beneficiary bank and a leading remitter bank. According to the latest report by NPCI, as a beneficiary bank, PPBL has registered over 1,614 million transactions and as a remitter bank, it registered more than 362 million transactions in October 2022. "We believe the proposed implementation of UPI market capping will be hugely beneficial for the UPI ecosystem. This move by the NPCI will bolster the growth of digital payments and democratize it for the citizens, ending market concentration risk. With this, UPI will become even more accessible and enable further digital adoption," a Paytm Payments Bank spokesperson told IANS. The bank is now enabling users to make transactions across all UPI payment apps with just the mobile number, and even if it is not registered with Paytm. With this, users can receive and send money instantly to any mobile number with a registered UPI ID across platforms using the Paytm app. This further deepens Unified Payments Interface (UPI) interoperability and roots for the adoption of mobile payments. Paytm Payments Bank supports UPI market cap, maintains leadership as PSP & Issuer Bank

Online payment services <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword> is expanding its base in other Southeast Asian markets including <keyword id="6356662" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Singapore">Singapore</keyword>. In order to materialize its overseas expansion plans, the company has appointed Sourabh Sharma, founder of Milaap as the head for its Southeast Asian operations. 
	 
	“We are excited on the opportunity of providing consumers with great payment solutions on mobile. Most people still resort to traditional ways of bill payments such as bank transfers, kiosks and physical outlets of the service provider. I am extremely excited to be a part of Paytm’s growth in this area. With a powerful product and a well-thought out strategy, I am certain that we can establish a firm foothold for Paytm in Singapore and other South East Asian geographies in the near future,” said Sharma. 
	 
	Sharma, who is based out of Singapore, will be responsible for tapping the mobile consumers for Paytm’s services. 
	 
	“Paytm intends to bring to South-asian markets their app driven convenience of paying for utility bills in the first phase, and will cater primarily to areas such as bill payments, transportation, parking, metros etc. With this expansion, the company further plans to tap other South East Asian markets of Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia,” said Vijay Shekhar Sharma, CEO, Paytm. 
	 
	Commenting on the appointment of Sharma, he added, “Paytm is committed to growing its presence in global markets through a route of partnerships and grounds-up built company across regions.
