<ul><li>According to reports, <keyword id="302749" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alibaba">Alibaba</keyword> is pausing on its India <keyword id="138263" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="startup">startup</keyword> investments. </li><li>It has made big bets on India like <keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword> and Paytm Mall, Zomato, BigBasket, Snapdeal and logistics firm Xpressbees. </li><li>Alibaba was also reported to have been looking at a deal with Reliance Retail.</li></ul>E-commerce giant Alibaba has put a full stop to its investments in India, according to <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/alibaba-hits-pause-on-fresh-india-investments-4370951.html">reports</a>.<br /><br />In a response to Moneycontrol, Alibaba said that it remains committed to the Indian market. <br /><br />Alibaba was also reported to have been eyeing deal with Reliance Retail. However, these deal talks seem to have fallen through. <br /><br />Alibaba has placed big bets in the Indian market with top startups like Paytm and Paytm Mall, Zomato, BigBasket, Snapdeal and logistics firm Xpressbees. However, Alibaba hasn’t exited from any of their investments. <br /><br />In May, Alibaba was<a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/alibaba-looks-to-focus-on-small-deals-in-india-1557082189868.html"> rumoured</a> to be re-evaluating its India strategy to turn its focus to smaller ticket deals in India. This is after having made large investments with great emphasis on big and successful companies. <br /><br />This move comes after Alibaba’s much talked about Hong Kong IPO was delayed, owing to the political unrest. Alibaba’s first IPO in 2014 in the US created history in the market as it raised $25 billion. But investors will have to wait for yet another possibly stellar debut atAsian financial hub – Hong Kong.<br />

Alibaba won't be making any fresh investments in India: Reports

Also, its entry into insurance sectors has been rejected by regulators. Not just small investors, even Alibaba-owned ANT Group and Softbank have lost money on Paytm

Several investors have lined to rake in money in <keyword id="964794" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BigBasket">BigBasket</keyword> and latest to join the list is Chinese ecommerce giant <keyword id="302749" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alibaba">Alibaba</keyword>.<br /><br /> As per various reports, Alibaba, <keyword id="4225623" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paytm-Mall">Paytm Mall</keyword>, Temasek Holdings, Fosun Group, etc, are in fundraising talks with BigBasket.<br /><br /> Also, Alibaba has shown interest in picking up a stake in BigBasket.<br /><br /> ET quoted sources as saying Alibaba-Paytm Mall combine have offered to invest $200 million in BigBasket at a valuation of nearly $900 million post the investment.<br /><br /> Meanwhile, Fosun's venture capital arm Kinzon Capital is in discussions with BigBasket for co-investment in the ongoing funding round with a cheque of $20-30 million. "It is for the founders to decide who they would like to go with," ET quoted sources as saying.<br /><br /> Alibaba and <keyword id="649392" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alipay">Alipay</keyword> own over 50% stake in Paytm Mall and have been focussing on investments in grocery and physical retail investments across the globe. <br /><br /> "As matter of policy, we do not comment on market speculation and rumours," an associate on behalf of Temasek said in response to ET's queries. <br /><br /> Apart from Alibaba, Amazon is also concentrating on the online grocery market in India. The company is likely to begin directly selling groceries and other food products online after recently securing the government's approval for its proposed $500-million foreign direct investment in the business.<br /><br />

Alibaba might acquire an Indian site for online movie ticket booking

Alibaba needs to merge the Paytm, in which it has a stake, with the much bigger adversary ShopClues, as it is prospecting several securing targets to solidify an India entry against opponent Amazon, people acquainted with the matter said.<br />
<br /> The Gurgaon-based ShopClues numbers <keyword id="6357968" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="GIC">GIC</keyword> of Singapore, <keyword id="526777" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tiger-Global">Tiger Global</keyword>, Nexus Venture Partners and Helion among its investors and has raised about $250 million till date. ShopClues is positioned as an online flea market, selling cheaper and generally unbranded merchandise to value shoppers. The organization, which is one among the top takeover targets in Indian e-commerce, is said to be reporting a revenue run-rate of $750 million based on the gross merchandise value of the products sold.<br />

The news will bring cheer to the market as it ends the Chinese stakeholding in the homegrown Paytm.<br /><br />Paytm's shares have been rallying in the last few days since it announced operating profitability in its Q3FY23 results with EBITDA before ESOP cost at Rs 31 crore, significantly ahead of its guidance of September 2023.<br /><br />The fintech giant revenue from operations increased to Rs 2,062 crore (no <keyword id="6358921" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="upi" source="Orion">UPI</keyword> incentive recorded this quarter), a growth of 42 per cent on a yearly basis. This was followed by Paytm's robust operating update of January 2023 that it filed with the stock exchange on February 8.<br /><br />The company has continued to witness sustained growth momentum in its key payments and lending business.
