New Delhi, The government might look at enhancing the scrutiny of certain class of corporates, including in terms of <keyword id="19910870" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kyc" source="keywords">KYC</keyword> requirements, as efforts continue to weed out unscrupulous elements and curb possible misdoings, according to a senior official. The matters related to KYC (Know Your Customer), including a simplified and uniform system, are still under discussion, and a committee headed by the finance secretary is looking into various aspects. The senior official on Monday said that various aspects related to having a uniform KYC are being discussed and in the case of the corporate affairs ministry, Permanent Account Number (<keyword id="19939397" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pan" source="keywords">PAN</keyword>) is being used for KYC requirements. The ministry is implementing the companies law and <keyword id="20735098" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="limited-liability-partnership" source="keywords">Limited Liability Partnership</keyword> (LLP) Act, among other legislations. Further, the official said enhanced KYC requirements might be explored for certain class of corporates. As many as 26,28,865 companies were registered in the country as on January 31, 2024, and out of the total, 16,65,438 companies, or 63 per cent were active, as per the latest official data. According to the data, a total number of 3,16,402 LLPs were active at the end of January this year. Meanwhile, the ministry-appointed panel is discussing possibilities of having a stricter regulatory regime for startups against the backdrop of instances of corporate governance concerns at some of the entities. The Company Law Committee (CLC), which was set up by the ministry in September 2019, is yet to firm its views and a final decision will be taken after receiving the panel's recommendations, the official said. Over a period of time, the ministry has been clamping down on entities, suspected of carrying out illegal activities. Last week, the <keyword id="20584362" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-stability-and-development-council" source="keywords">Financial Stability and Development Council</keyword> (FSDC), chaired by Finance Minister <keyword id="19916618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="keywords">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword>, discussed strengthening inter-regulatory coordination in the financial sector to support inclusive economic growth. The earlier deadline was Tuesday, December 31. "The due date for linking of PAN with Aadhaar as specified under sub-section 2 of section 139AA of the Income-tax Act, 1961 has been extended from December 31, 2019 to March 31, 2020," the department said on its official Twitter handle. This is the eighth time that the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadline for individuals to link their PAN with Aadhaar. The Supreme Court, in September last year, had declared the Centre's flagship Aadhaar scheme as constitutionally valid and held that the biometric ID would remain mandatory for the filing of I-T returns and allotment of the PAN. Section 139 AA (2) of the Income Tax Act says that every person having PAN as on July 1, 2017, and is eligible to obtain Aadhaar, must intimate his Aadhaar number to tax authorities. Aadhaar is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to a resident of India and PAN is a 10-digit alphanumeric number allotted by the I-T department to a person, firm or entity. The CBDT, that frames policy for the tax department, said a notification numbered 107 has been issued in this context. NES CK

My debt is a hangover from my childhood trust issues. And, like all good therapy, my journey started with getting honest. <h2>What financial intimacy feels like — and why it's so scary</h2>Before we ever talked about his fees or services, <keyword id="18761159" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="coambs" source="Orion">Coambs</keyword> offered me two free one-hour <keyword id="10296" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="zoom" source="Orion">Zoom</keyword> sessions to discuss the process of working one-on-one with a financial planner. Unpracticed in sharing details about my finances with someone, I was nervous. He asked me about my financial goals and habits, along with a few questions meant to uncover my deeper financial beliefs. He inquired about the positive lessons I picked up from my family of origin, along with any limiting notions or knowledge gaps. During our conversation, I felt wary and doubtful, a reaction I'd also experienced before while dating. As someone working through abandonment and trust issues, I often scrutinize my dates, searching for reasons to reject them preemptively. But what if there was another approach — in both dating and other contexts? Rather than let my fears rule the show, I made a list of questions for Coambs and interviewed five other planners to compare my options. Unlike the child who felt abandoned, I realized I now had adult tools to advocate for myself. Coambs respected my questions, answered them thoughtfully, and emphasized that the choice ultimately lay with me. As I signed off Zoom that day, I realized I would only see progress with a financial planner if I showed up with courage and sincerity. <h2>Working with a fee-only financial planner</h2>I ended up hiring Coambs. He is a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/fee-only-financial-advisor">fee-only fiduciary,</a> meaning he doesn't profit from any investments he recommends, but instead charges a straightforward flat rate for our work together. When I hired him in July 2023, Coambs' rate was on a sliding scale based on a client's income and financial standing. It started at $5,000 a year plus 1% of the client's overall net worth. My payment, Coambs informed me, could be broken into monthly, quarterly, or annual installments. I chose the quarterly option. <h2>Thinking ahead and designing your life</h2>Though $5,000 may seem like a steep fee for someone new to financial planning, it is significantly less than the price I've already paid for trying to manage my money alone for the past two years as a sole proprietor without support. In my first two years of self-employment, I've missed out on opportunities for tax savings while paying interest on debt that I've tried repeatedly to pay off. As Coambs reminded me, now that I am capable of making $250,000 a year (or more!), I could make $1 million in revenue over the next four years. The opportunity cost of not properly planning what to do with a million dollars is steep. In four years, I don't want to still be living in my small studio apartment, paying off debt, and feeling confused about how much I owe in taxes; I want to have a healthy savings account, a growing retirement fund, and a home where I feel excited to start a family. <h2>How to forgive yourself for past — or current — financial mistakes</h2>Despite my new enthusiasm, there was one step I was dreading: After our preliminary meetings, I would have to link my accounts to Coambs' financial-planning software. I was embarrassed. He would soon see all my account balances, including my debt. I'm still paying off <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/graduate-school-worth-student-loans-its-complicated-2019-7">five figures in student loans</a> I took out between 2015 to 2017. I also racked up some credit-card and personal-loan debt when I quit my job to freelance full time in 2021. Though I surpassed my revenue expectations in my first two years of self-employment, I also spent money on what felt like failed experiments: signing up for an expensive mastermind program that didn't actually help me, impulse purchasing logos on Fiverr, paying a website designer and copywriter for an idea before testing the proof-of-concept, hiring an assistant for two months without a plan for making back my return on investment — you get the idea. A lot of trial and error is involved with running your own business. Sensing my embarrassment, Coambs asked me to describe my feelings. I said I felt ashamed that I — a financial journalist — could have spent years reporting on money-related topics without applying that knowledge to my personal situation and becoming debt-free. He reminded me how normal it is for human beings to learn concepts intellectually before actually practicing them in their life and acknowledged my integrity for seeking support to improve my situation. He also introduced the human-capital theory to me, which is an economic theory that validates the choice to use debt to pay for experiences that help us grow. Given that much of my debt comes from education and funding my business, this shifted my perspective and helped me release some of my shame. <h2>Covering my financial-planning basics</h2>Once Coambs and I began to clear my lingering money shame, we focused on financial-planning basics. Though we're still early in our work together, we've outlined a plan with a few key focus areas: <h3>Understanding my 'financial attachment' style</h3>I have an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/mental-health/anxious-attachment-style">anxious attachment style</a> in personal relationships, and I'll admit my money-management style is also fraught with anxiety. According to Coambs, those with an anxious attachment style may have trouble saving money or even accrue debt because of impulsive decisions made from an underlying fear that money will "abandon" us or run out. In a traditional financial-planning session, I'd probably internalize all of my anxiety and focus only on the numbers. But in sessions with a licensed therapist and certified financial planner like Coambs, clients are encouraged to talk through their feelings. It's easier to make intentional decisions once we neutralize the doom-and-gloom scenarios living rent-free in our minds. <h3>Tax planning as a self-employed freelancer</h3>As a self-employed freelancer, one of my first priorities is going to be setting up my business in tax-incentivized ways, saving for taxes every month, and paying them in quarterly installments. <h3>Saving for retirement</h3>With the days of an employer matching my 401(k) behind me, retirement planning is also going to be one of my top financial-planning priorities in 2024. After talking with a fellow self-employed creator, I realized I was paying almost double in taxes as an individual than what I would have if I'd <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-know-elect-s-corporation-status-freelancer-taxes-2022-1">filed for S-corporation status</a>, which is something I'm bringing to my work with Coambs to plan better for 2024. <h3>Diversifying revenue streams</h3>Though I don't know exactly what my future holds, I know I'd like the ability to scale back my working hours in the next few years when I'm ready to become a parent. Coambs and I have not begun to discuss the specifics, but this is definitely on my to-do list. <h2>Becoming more financially transparent — and more emotionally available</h2>Working with a therapy-informed financial planner is good practice for letting another human being into my emotional and financial worlds. Having a financial plan is also a huge confidence boost when dating. I feel less embarrassed about my past, more sure-footed about my future, and certain of the value (financial and otherwise) I will bring to a potential partnership. And as someone <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/spouse-partner-helping-teach-me-about-budgeting-2023-9">still paying off debt</a>, I know I won't need my partner to save me. Rather, I'm looking for someone to cheer me on and be my emotional confidant as I walk the path I've created independently — and maybe, with time, that path will merge with theirs.

According to officials, the crime originated from Dubai and the Philippines. The officials said that they have also seized bank accounts with over Rs 1.25 crore. The accused were identified as Vivek Kumar Singh (33), Manish Kumar (23), Suhel Akaram a.k.a Syed Ahamad (32), Gaurav Sharma (23) and Balram (32). On June 6, Ashish Agarwal filed a complaint on the National Cyber-Crime Portal, stating that in the month of May, he received a message on his WhatsApp. The sender allured him to invest in the Telegram app with the promise of high returns. Initially, they asked him to invest a small amount of Rs 1,000 with a promise to return Rs 1,100. "He invested Rs 1,000 in a Telegram group and subsequently received Rs 1,100. The accused then persuaded him to invest Rs 10,000 with the promise of a return of Rs 12,000," said the additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (central) Sachin Sharma. Gradually, they convinced him to invest substantial amounts in lakhs. "However, they later reneged on returning the promised amounts and, under the pretext of returning the principal, convinced him to invest even more. As a result, the complainant fell victim to a cyber scam, losing approximately Rs 30 lakhs," said Sharma. During <keyword id="49112" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investigation" source="Orion">investigation</keyword>, the police obtained bank <keyword id="47115" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="account-details" source="Orion">account details</keyword> and call detail records (CDR) of mobile numbers linked to he bank accounts of the accused/suspected individuals. "The inquiry revealed that the defrauded money was transferred to 25 bank accounts in various banks and cities. Funds from these accounts were further transferred to various other bank accounts. A current bank account was opened at Yes Bank in the name of a fake firm, "Aairsky," at the Nangalraya address in Delhi," said the additional DCP. Upon verification, it was discovered that the said premises had been rented by an individual named Suhel Akram, with another individual, Gaurav Sharma, also associated with it. "The investigation further revealed that 11 fake companies were registered at this address, with different individuals falsely listed as directors of these companies," said the official. On September 18, based on specific information, the police arrested Suhel Akram and his associate, Gaurav Sharma, in Malviya Nagar. "Various counterfeit stamps with different names, bank account details, and debit cards were recovered from their possession. They confessed to their involvement in the scam, leading to their arrests in accordance with due legal procedures," said the official. On sustained interrogation, the accused revealed that they would rent premises for the registration of shell companies using forged documents. "They would then open current bank accounts in different banks, primarily Yes Bank and RBL Bank, using the names of these shell companies. Suhel Akram's friend, Balram, was responsible for finding individuals to act as nominal directors of these shell companies. At the direction of Suhel, Balram was also arrested," said the official. Suhel further disclosed that he provided the details of these fraudulent current bank accounts to Vivek Kumar Singh, residing in Sector 28, DLF Phase-1, Gurugram, Haryana. "Following this information, the police arrested Vivek Kumar Singh and his associate, Manish Kumar. Vivek was the individual in contact with counterparts in Dubai and the Philippines, originating the criminal activities," said the official. Vivek revealed that he connected with foreign nationals involved in online betting, gaming, and investment through Telegram and LinkedIn. "The daily transactions in these bank accounts amounted to more than a crore of rupees," said the official. Suhel had altered his identity as Syed Ahmad, son of Syed Abdul Haque, by creating forged documents, including an Aadhar Card and PAN card. He used these fabricated identities to open various companies, aiming to legitimise ill-gotten money. "Further investigation is under progress and efforts are on to nab the other persons involved in a chain of such cyber cheaters," the official added.

Citizens will now be able to create and authenticate their own Digilocker account on WhatsApp and download documents such as PAN card; driving licence; CBSE Class X passing certificate; vehicle registration certificate (RC); insurance policy - two wheeler; Class X and Class XII marksheets; and insurance policy document (life and non-life available on Digilocker), MyGov said in a statement. According to MyGov, the move will make "the government services accessible, inclusive, transparent and simple". "Offering Digilocker services on the MyGov Helpdesk is a natural progression and a step towards providing citizens with simplified access to essential services via WhatsApp's easy and accessible platform. With almost 100 million+ people already registered on Digilocker and 5 billion+ documents issued till date, we are confident that the service on WhatsApp will digitally empower millions by helping them access authentic documents and information, right from within their phones," said Abhishek Singh, CEO MyGov in the statement. The report concluded that there was a lack of coordination between the Income Tax (IT) Department and the RoC in this regard, suggesting that when a company applies for or has its PAN updated by the IT Dept, there should me a mechanism in place for the changes to reflect in the RoC. In this regard, the Central Board of Direct Taxation is <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/finance/95-real-estate-companies-outside-the-income-tax-net-finds-cag/articleshow/67959548.cms">said</a> to be working on a scheme to sync the operations of the RoC and the IT Department. The real estate sector is no stranger to tax evasion and fraud. The surprising fact is that the tax department that keeps a tight leash on every other sector except the one that is is infamous as a haven for ill-gotten wealth in the country.
