(Eds: Adds details) New Delhi, Dec 30 () The last date for the mandatory linking of the <keyword id="134255" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="permanent-account-number">Permanent Account Number</keyword> (PAN) with Aadhaar has been extended till March next year, the CBDT said on Monday. The earlier deadline was Tuesday, December 31. "The due date for linking of PAN with Aadhaar as specified under sub-section 2 of section 139AA of the Income-tax Act, 1961 has been extended from December 31, 2019 to March 31, 2020," the department said on its official Twitter handle. This is the eighth time that the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadline for individuals to link their PAN with Aadhaar. The Supreme Court, in September last year, had declared the Centre's flagship Aadhaar scheme as constitutionally valid and held that the biometric ID would remain mandatory for the filing of I-T returns and allotment of the PAN. Section 139 AA (2) of the Income Tax Act says that every person having PAN as on July 1, 2017, and is eligible to obtain Aadhaar, must intimate his Aadhaar number to tax authorities. Aadhaar is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to a resident of India and PAN is a 10-digit alphanumeric number allotted by the I-T department to a person, firm or entity. Deadline for PAN-Aadhar linking extended for a fifth time, new date is 31 March 2019

The Delhi High Court Monday declined to order linking of social media accounts with Aadhaar, PAN or voter ID card for weeding out fake accounts, saying it would lead to data of genuine account holders, who are much more in number, going "unnecessarily" to foreign countries. A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar said linking of accounts with social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp, with Aadhaar, PAN or any other identity document requires framing of policies or amendment in existing laws by the central government and this exercise cannot be done by the court. "Role of courts is to interpret the law as it is. We are not concerned with what the law ought to be," it said, adding that in exceptional cases where there is a gap in the law, the courts can step in. It said that in the instant case, linking of social media accounts with identity data like Aadhaar or PAN was a "crucial matter" which has to be appreciated by the central government and it cannot be treated as a "gap" which needs to be plugged by the court as it "would have far reaching consequences regarding data of genuine account holders". The bench said it was not inclined to issue any direction to the government as it is already deliberating on the Law Commission reports on the issue and disposed of the PIL seeking directions to the Centre to take steps for linking social media accounts with Aadhaar, PAN or voter ID card to weed out fake accounts. It however told the government to keep in mind that identity data of genuine account holders was also at stake and a "proper balance" has to be struck by it while taking a decision on the issue. In its order, the bench noted that according to BJP leader Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, who had moved the plea, 20 per cent of the social media accounts were "fake, ghost or duplicate". "To weed out 20 per cent fake accounts all the data, including that of genuine account holders, will go to a foreign country. Majority of account holders are genuine. Therefore, if linkage is ordered by this court, there maybe a situation where data of genuine account holders will also go to foreign country, maybe unnecessarily," the court said. During the hearing, Upadhyay said something has to be done as anyone can create a fake account on social media of any person, including the judges, and through that medium wrong or controversial information can be spread. Why do we take U-turn? Before we jump in to analyze Aadhar and its allied insecurity, let’s get straight into philosophy of contradictions. What characterizes a critical thinker?  Perhaps U-turns are a necessary ingredient for triggering intellectual blunders. And nobody better than <keyword id="41281" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NDA">NDA</keyword> government knows that most of us struggle to maintain stability in psychological unity. And at such a juncture, contradictions produce destabilizing breaches in the self. 
 
How the government wants to go with Aadhar? 
The 12-digit number will be required for all citizens of India to file tax returns, driving licenses, filing EPF, getting railway tickets and a variety of other services. 
 
 
 
Why is it alarming? 
Firstly, we need to do understand how Aadhar cards were made. Terming the procedure as causal wouldn’t be an exaggeration. A card that started as a mere identity card was gradually made into a mechanism to gain benefits from the government and now even to get basic things done in life. 
 
The process of registering people on Aadhar was executed through private enterprises known as enrollers who operated freely without any government supervision at the field level. The qualifications needed to become an enrolment agency were quite low and nobody was from a recognized name. 
 Also with the case of whether Aadhar would be mandatory for all these services still pending in the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword>, taking such a move would be no less than violations of <keyword id="42836" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="SC">SC</keyword> guidelines. 
 Besides, there is zero privacy of an individual. Aadhar doesn’t guarantee any privacy and allows for mass surveillance of the countrymen under the vague term of ‘national security’. Only law that is valid in the case is Section 47 that only <keyword id="86474" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Unique-Identification-Authority-of-India">Unique Identification Authority of India</keyword> (UIDAI) can file criminal complaint for theft of data. 
 
Government is the new <keyword id="4646" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Big-Boss">Big Boss</keyword> 
No you aren’t criminal that you would need to hide. But let’s admit it nobody wants to be tracked by a big brother. Imagine the scene when somebody knows how much you earn and spend, where you holiday and which flight did you take on your last office trip, which hotel did you put up and what broadband do you use.
