<ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>Toby To Yan Choi left his accounting job in California to help his father run a food stall in Hong Kong.</strong></li><li>His hours became longer and more grueling, but he has started earning more than double his previous salary.</li></ul><p>Eight years ago, Toby To Yan Choi left his accounting job in California to help run his family's business: a wet market food stall in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hong-kong-millennial-housing-prices-income-debt-dreams-2023-9">Hong Kong</a>.</p><p>With a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara, Choi had been dedicating 40 hours a week to his desk job, often glued to a computer screen. He was in his 20s and had lived most of his childhood and early adult life in the US.</p><p>Choi was compelled by his father's request to help him at Dai Lee Dai Pai Dong, ranked by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.timeout.com/hong-kong/restaurants/best-dai-pai-dong-hong-kong">Time Out</a> in February as one of Hong Kong's top 12 dai pai dongs. "My dad wasn't the type of person to ask for help, so him asking me to return to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hong-kong-like-local-avoid-looking-like-tourist-2023-11">Hong Kong</a> meant a lot," he told Business Insider. "I felt that he had worked all his life for us, and I should return the favor if I can."</p><p>Upon moving back to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hong-kong-tourist-mistake-travel-guide-local-tips-2023-5">Hong Kong</a>, Choi's work hours shifted and stretched. He began working from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., seven days a week.<strong> </strong>He would regularly clock 90-hour weeks.</p><div type="image" title="Two boys graduating from University of California, Santa Barbara" height="1200" width="1600" msid="109993749" hostid="261"></div><p>Since his return to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/private-tutor-hong-kong-richest-elite-families-big-money-secrets-2023-12">Hong Kong</a>, Choi has been juggling several roles in the family business, from slinging woks in the kitchen and waiting tables to managing the marketing alongside his wife.</p><p>While he finds the work demanding, he says he now earns more than twice as much as he did as an accountant in the US. He's also happy for the chance to help his family business and contribute to preserving Hong Kong's heritage.</p><p>"Being a part of Hong Kong's dai pai dong tradition, I realize we can definitely raise awareness of vanishing establishments like us," Choi said.</p><h2 id="5ec53cb7-c592-4d05-a162-5ca725bacd91">Choi is running one of the few remaining dai pai dongs in Hong Kong</h2><p>Dai pai dongs, renowned as one of Hong Kong's quintessential culinary customs, are food stalls equipped with sizzling woks, known as "wok hei," in a space where cooking and dining are all done outdoors.</p><p>But similar to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-hong-kong-looked-like-40-years-ago-2012-7">Hong Kong</a>'s neon signs, dim sum carts, and hand-painted mahjong tiles, the dai pai dong experience is one more of the city's cultural icons facing extinction.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.scmp.com/yp/discover/lifestyle/features/article/3097776/hong-kongs-dai-pai-dong-serving-citys-ultimate">After World War II</a>, the government in Hong Kong began granting licenses to families of deceased or disabled civil servants, allowing them to operate small street-side restaurants for a livelihood. However, complaints regarding noise, traffic, and hygiene prompted the government to stop issuing new licenses in 1956. In 1975, the first cooked food center was opened to introduce a more controlled and hygienic environment.</p><p>"The main reason for the gradual disappearance of dai pai dongs in Hong Kong is most likely related to policies: the government no longer issues new licenses, and those who own the remaining licenses cannot continue operating if no one takes over the business," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/yanwei525/?hl=en">Agnes Chee Yan-Wei</a>, the author of "Vanishing Flavours of Cantonese Cuisine," told BI.</p><p>The number of dai pai dongs in all of Hong Kong has dwindled to just over 20, according to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.discoverhongkong.com/seasia/explore/dining/must-try-dai-pai-dongs-and-their-essential-dishes.html">Hong Kong Tourism Board</a>. The government ceased issuing new licenses in the 1970s, and those still running are now only transferrable to family members.</p><p>Tiffany Leung, a food critic from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/top_hongkong_restaurants/?hl=en">HK's Top Restaurants</a>, described dai pai dogs as ''one-of-a-kind" experiences. "It is upsetting to note that dai pai dongs could not keep up with the fast development pace of Hong Kong and are gradually being replaced by modern alternatives," she said.</p><div type="image" title="Man eating at a table at Dai Lee Dai Pai Dong, a wet market in Hong Kong." height="3024" width="4032" msid="109993750" hostid="261"></div><h2 id="76b704f2-4038-4fef-959c-2bab30661719">At first, Choi's dad wasn't sold on him coming back to work in a food stall</h2><p>Now, Choi's younger brother, Shawn Cai, who also moved back to Hong Kong from the US in 2022, and his grandfather, Law Chun Chuen, all work at the establishment. Choi said that while their stall has<strong> </strong>20 to 25 employees, most of them are part-time and only work a couple of hours every day.</p><p>When it first opened in the 1980s, the business operated in an open-air setting, like a traditional dai pai dong. However, in 1996 it relocated to the second floor of a busy wet market in Sham Shui Po. Once one of Hong Kong's poorest districts, Sham Shui Po has evolved over the years, and in 2020, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.timeout.com/hong-kong/news/sham-shui-po-is-hong-kongs-coolest-neighbourhood-right-now-100620">Time Out</a> named it one of the top three coolest neighborhoods in the world.</p><div type="image" title="Bowl of winter Mongolian lamb stew from Dai Lee Dai Pai Dong in Hong Kong" height="1366" width="2048" msid="109993751" hostid="261"></div><h2 id="f4601406-5d11-4896-8db5-b485c3aa473b"><strong>There's a loyal following among the older generation</strong></h2><p>Signature dishes at Dai Lee Dai Pai Dong include the cumin garlic ribs, spiced with a blend of paprika, cumin, fennel, and garlic and then deep fried; a seasonal winter Mongolian lamb stew; and the braised white pepper pork hock, which they've been selling for almost 30 years.</p><p>"Due to our customers being mostly blue-collar workers, they want dishes that are hearty, affordable, and flavorful," said Choi. He said customers typically share several dishes as a group and spend around $13 to $19 per person in one sitting. He said this is considered on the low end for one of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/minimum-wage-hong-kong-expensive-city-activists-labor-rights-reactions-2023-5">world's most expensive cities</a>.</p><div type="image" title="Braised white pepper pork hock, one of the signature dishes at Dai Lee Dai Pai Dong in Hong Kong." height="1365" width="2048" msid="109993753" hostid="261"></div><p>Customers like Tony Lee, 58, are loyal. "We like coming here because you can be loud and obnoxious, and no one would look at you differently," he said, "Once we found this dai pai dong, we started meeting here twice a week."</p><p>Another customer, Mok Wah Ho, 67, said, "I like coming to dai pai dongs because the beers are cold, the food portions are big, and prices are very reasonable."</p><h2 id="14937b6c-7224-40f7-a8af-95ef8eb875d7">Choi's goal is to uphold the tradition</h2><p>Choi is proud of their reputation. "Our stall has been a beloved fixture for years — my aspiration is to perpetuate this cherished legacy and uphold the tradition," he said.</p><p>However, challenges abound.</p><p>Choi has observed a staff shortage at many dia pai dongs, with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hiring-gen-z-graduates-pay-transparency-adobe-2023-1">fewer young people wanting to apply to jobs</a> that require long hours. Employers are finding it hard to recruit amid Hong Kong's shrinking population and the city's minimum wage not keeping up with inflation, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.scmp.com/comment/letters/article/3219275/fixing-hong-kongs-worker-shortage-will-not-be-quick-or-easy">South China Morning Post</a> reported last year.</p><p>Meanwhile, Choi's staff, who have worked with them for over a decade, are aging. Most of them are between 50 and 60, with a few members of the team already in their 70s.</p><p>"The intricate skills of managing our staff, maintaining vendor relations, and building customer relationships were things I had to learn on the fly during the early years of management," he said. He's also collaborated with local tour companies to attract more tourists.</p><p>"Dai pai dongs are a crucial part of remembering and preserving Hong Kong's food history — when we eat there we enjoy a taste of the past, and help ensure that Cantonese culinary culture continues into the future," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/bettyshanghai/?hl=en">Betty Richardson</a>, a former food critic who moved from Shanghai to Hong Kong, told BI. "Once these dai pai dong are gone, they are gone forever."</p><p>"I believe places like dai pai dongs, representing grassroots culture, should coexist with high-end restaurants for two main reasons: first, to preserve traditional culture, and second, to diversify the economic structure so that there is space for different levels of the population to thrive," the author and food critic Chee said.</p><p>For all his success and pride in the family business, though, running the food stall is not Choi's ultimate goal.</p><p>He's gotten married since moving to Hong Kong and plans to move back to the US if he and his wife have kids. At that point, he says, the family legacy will be passed to different hands.</p><p>"I'm dedicated to upholding our family legacy, with my brother likely to carry it forward," he said.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Amateur freedivers in <keyword id="11910350" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="spain" source="Orion">Spain</keyword> have discovered one of the largest collections of gold Roman coins found in Europe.</li><li>The collection of 53 coins date back to the 4th and 5th centuries and are nearly perfectly preserved.</li><li>Researchers suggested the coins could have been hidden from barbarian looters.</li></ul><p>Freedivers off the coast of Spain have uncovered a treasure trove of 53 perfectly preserved gold coins from the <keyword id="12175404" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="roman-empire" source="Orion">Roman Empire</keyword>, one of the largest collections ever found in Europe.</p><p>Brothers-in-law Luis Lens and César Gimeno were freediving in the Mediterranean Sea while on vacation in Xàbia, Spain. Cleaning up trash, according to <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/snorkellers-find-hoard-of-roman-gold-coins-rkz8t0npm">The Times</a>, as they explored the underwater scenery they came across a shiny object that resembled a "10-cent-coin," newspaper <a href="https://english.elpais.com/usa/2021-09-24/amateur-divers-find-perfectly-preserved-roman-treasure-in-spain.html">El Pais</a> said.</p><p>After retrieving the object, they noticed an inscription with an ancient Greek or Roman face and assumed it was from jewelry. </p><p>Using the corkscrew of a Swiss Army knife, they discovered another seven coins embedded in a rock crevice.</p><p>After reporting their discovery to local authorities, a team of scuba divers and archaeologists uncovered a total of 53 gold coins, three nails, and some remains of what appeared to be a chest.</p><p>Scientists from the University Institute for Research in <keyword id="12175403" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="archeology" source="Orion">Archeology</keyword> and Historical Heritage analyzed the coins. They found they were from the end of the 4th century and the beginning of the 5th century.</p><p>"It's incredible. It's every child's dream to find a treasure," Luis Lens told El Pais.</p><div type="image" title="Amateur freedivers found a large collection of gold Roman coins off the coast of Spain." height="385" width="650" msid="86511647" hostid="261"></div><p>"It is one of the largest sets of Roman gold coins found in Spain and Europe," said Jaime Molina, head of the team of underwater archaeologists from the <a href="https://web.ua.es/es/actualidad-universitaria/2021/septiembre2021/20-26/hallan-53-monedas-de-oro-de-los-siglos-iv-y-v-en-el-fondo-marino-del-portitxol-de-xabia.html">University of Alicante,</a> in a press release.</p><p>What makes the discovery even more unusual is how perfectly preserved the coins were.</p><p>Researchers were able to identify the emperors on the coins: Valentinian I (3 coins), Valentinian II (7 coins), Todosio I (15 coins), Arcadi (17 coins), Honorius (10 coins), and an unidentified coin.</p><p>Molina said that the discovery could provide a multitude of new information to understand the final phase of the fall of the Western Roman Empire.</p><p>Historians said that the coins could have been intentionally hidden to avoid looting barbarians, such as the Alans.</p><p>They said the coins shed light on the historical moment of insecurity with the arrival of barbarian people, such as the Suevi, Vandals, and Alans, leading to the fall of the Roman Empire.</p><p>The coins will be restored and exhibited in the Soler Blasco Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum of Xàbia, the University of Alicante said.</p>

"Through my initial travels, I met people and inquired. I researched endlessly. I took risks. I leaped before looking a few times, and I've failed miserably along the way."</p><p><span>Just because it's hard, though, doesn't mean it's not worth doing. "This life isn't always easy to maintain. It's a constant flow of challenges that you have to overcome, but it's worth every drop of sweat, tears, and beers," she said.</span></p><p>"It's going to be scary, confusing, and you will fail," she advises others who want to pursue long-term travel. "I know I did. <p>A man has been reunited with his childhood nanny more than 30 years after they were separated, thanks to a post that got more than 55,000 shares on Facebook.</p><p>The fascinating story comes from Logroño, Spain, and <a href="http://politica.elpais.com/politica/2015/03/15/actualidad/1426442336_189998.html" target="_blank">has been reported by El Pais</a>, which witnessed the historic meeting between Francisco Javier Gimenez Diaz, now 35, and Yeny Zaera, his childhood nanny.</p><p>On February 20, Yeny wrote in <a href="https://www.facebook.com/yeny.zaera/posts/10153186422644381" target="_blank">a post on her Facebook page</a> how she hadn't seen the children she used to look after because they had been adopted by other families, and she was not able to get in touch with them.</p><p>But the post was shared 56,336 times and, in less than three days, <span>Diaz</span>&#xa0;managed to get in touch.</p><p>Here is how that post appears now on <span>Zaera</span>'s page, after it had been updated announcing the two had found each other:</p><div><div><div id="fb-root"></div><div class="fb-post" data-href="https://www.facebook.com/yeny.zaera/posts/10153183654869381" data-width="750"><div class="fb-xfbml-parse-ignore"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/yeny.zaera/posts/10153183654869381">Post</a> by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/yeny.zaera">Yeny Zaera</a>.</div></div></div></div><p>And on Saturday, 30 years after they had been split up, Yeny and Francisco managed to finally meet:</p><div><div><div id="fb-root"></div><div class="fb-post" data-href="https://www.facebook.com/yeny.zaera/posts/10153237583094381" data-width="750"><div class="fb-xfbml-parse-ignore"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/yeny.zaera/posts/10153237583094381">Post</a> by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/yeny.zaera">Yeny Zaera</a>.</div></div></div></div><p>The story has attracted lots of coverage in Spain, and Yeny has explained why it has been so hard for her to get back in touch with Francisco.&#xa0;</p><p>Yeny used to look after Francisco and his three siblings, who were neglected by their natural parents. She told El Pais that <a href="http://politica.elpais.com/politica/2015/03/15/actualidad/1426442336_189998.html" target="_blank">sometimes she had to bring the children some ham to eat as they were left malnourished</a>&#xa0;and that their grandmother used to beat them.&#xa0;</p><p>In 1985 Francisco's mother disappeared with another man and the tribunal ordered that the four children had to be adopted. Yeny presented her request to take Francisco with her but failed it, as she was a single woman in her twenties, and without a full time job. Her own parents were judged "too old" to take care of the child.</p><p>The four children were sent to different families in different regions, and Yeny lost track of them, although never forgot. He and the others were released on Friday night, according to AFP. </span></p><p><span><span>"They were negotiating all this time, but now are free and well," the <span>Guzmán family relative</span> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/afp-guzman-relative-says-el-chapo-son-released-in-mexico-2016-8" target="_blank">told AFP</a>. Some of the captured men were already back in Sinaloa state, according to the source. The details of the negotiation are not known at this point.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Alfredo's release was <a href="http://riodoce.mx/narcotrafico-2/116808" target="_blank">first reported on Saturday afternoon</a> by the Sinaloa-based newspaper Rio Doce, which cited two different sources.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Alfredo Guzmán, who is wanted by the US on a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/afp-guzman-relative-says-el-chapo-son-released-in-mexico-2016-8" target="_blank">warrant</a> filed in 2009, was identified by state officials in Jalisco <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/el-chapo-guzmans-son-kidnapped-at-gunpoint-in-mexico-video-2016-8" target="_blank">based on security-camera footage</a> and other evidence at the scene of the abduction.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Alfredo and his older brother, Ivan Archivaldo - who was initially reported to have been kidnapped, as well - have both been <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/el-chapo-guzman-son-kidnapped-in-mexico-cartel-war-2016-8" target="_blank">implicated</a> in their father's drug-trafficking organization and are thought to have assumed larger roles in the cartel since their father's arrest earlier this year.</span></span></p><h3><span><span><strong><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/el-chapo-guzmans-son-kidnapped-at-gunpoint-in-mexico-video-2016-8" target="_blank">See footage of Alfredo Guzmán's abduction here &gt;&gt;</a></strong></span></span></h3><p><span><span>Investigators <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/el-chapo-guzmans-son-kidnapped-at-gunpoint-in-mexico-video-2016-8" target="_blank">said earlier this week that the gunmen</a> behind the kidnapping were likely members of the Jalisco New Generation cartel (CJNG), which is considered the Sinaloa cartel's only real rival in terms of power in Mexico. The governors of Jalisco and Nayarit, which borders Jalisco to the north, both said they were <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/el-chapo-guzmans-son-kidnapped-at-gunpoint-in-mexico-video-2016-8" target="_blank">preparing for violence in the aftermath of the abduction</a>.</span></span></p><p><span><span>The Sinaloa cartel and CJNG are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/el-chapo-guzman-sinaloa-jalisco-cartel" target="_blank">believed to have cooperated in the past</a>, but more recently they have reportedly clashed in several areas of western Mexico, including the strategically important smuggling <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jalisco-cartel-fighting-for-control-of-tijuana-2016-3" target="_blank">areas of the Baja Peninsula</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sinaloa-and-cjng-cartels-fighting-in-colima-mexico-2016-5" target="_blank">in Colima state</a>. </span></span></p><p><span><span>Mexico's attorney general's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/afp-guzman-relative-says-el-chapo-son-released-in-mexico-2016-8" target="_blank">office said</a> it was<span> "still working on the investigation" when contacted by AFP about Alfredo's reported release.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The elder Guzmán was recaptured in northeast Sinaloa state in January this year, after he escaped from the high-security Altiplano prison in central Mexico in July 2015. 5 days after being abducted at gunpoint, 'El Chapo' Guzman's son is reportedly free and unharmed

Gabriel Galeazzi said the sub surfaced to report a problem - which he described as a "<a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-42064144" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">short circuit</a>" in its batteries - early on November 15 and was ordered to return to port.</p><p>Balbi said the sub's captain contacted the naval base again, saying the problem had been adequately fixed and that the sub would submerge and head to Mar del Plata. The words on the flag read: "ARA San Juan, be strong."</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In the days since, dozens of ships and planes and thousands of personnel from Argentina, the US, the UK, Russia, Chile, Brazil, and other countries <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-search-for-missing-argentine-submarine-reaches-critical-phase-2017-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">have joined the search</a>, scouring an area of the South Atlantic roughly the size of Spain.</p><p>A number of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ap-more-help-arrives-in-search-for-argentine-submarine-2017-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">sounds</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-search-for-missing-argentine-submarine-reaches-critical-phase-2017-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">objects</a> have been detected during the search, which has been hindered at times by poor weather, but all have been false alarms.</p><p>It's not clear what transpired on the submarine before and after contact was lost. While the sub's crew had enough food, oxygen, and fuel to survive 90 days on the surface, there would only be enough oxygen to survive about seven days if it remained submerged.</p><p>Argentine navy spokesman Capt. Enrique Balbi <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-search-for-missing-argentine-submarine-reaches-critical-phase-2017-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said at the seven-day mark</a> on November 22 that the search had entered "the critical phase ... particularly with respect to oxygen" and that there had been no contact with anything that could have been the sub.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Thomson Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Argentine submarine ARA San Juan leaves the port of Buenos Aires, June 2, 2014.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Since that point, the outlook for the sub and its crew - which includes Argentina's first woman sub officer - has grown increasingly bleak.</p><p>On November 23, Balbi <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/short-violent-explosion-could-be-the-end-of-missing-argentine-sub-2017-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">described</a> a sound detected a few hours after contact was lost with the sub as "a singular, short, violent, non-nuclear event, consistent with an explosion." But the Argentine navy said it did not have enough information to determine the cause of the blast.</p><p>The US and the international body that monitors nuclear tests first <a href="https://elpais.com/internacional/2017/11/23/actualidad/1511447935_134725.html?id_externo_rsoc=TW_CM" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">detected</a> the sound on November 15 but took days to make their assessments, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/23/world/americas/argentina-submarine-explosion.html?_r=0" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">alerting</a> Buenos Aires a week after the sub disappeared.</p><p>Balbi said depth <a href="https://elpais.com/internacional/2017/11/23/actualidad/1511447935_134725.html?id_externo_rsoc=TW_CM" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">ranged</a> from 650 feet to nearly 10,000 feet in the area where the sound was detected, which is along the continental slope. "They killed my brother," shouted a man leaving the base in a car driven by another man in tears.</p><p>After the navy announced details of the explosion on the Thursday, family members at Mar del Plata raged against officials there. "They are some perverse bastards who had us here [for] a week," <a href="https://elpais.com/internacional/2017/11/23/argentina/1511462535_541838.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a> Itatí Leguizamon, the wife of one of the submariners. "Why didn't they tell us? (It underwent maintenance in 2008 and was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-search-for-missing-argentine-submarine-reaches-critical-phase-2017-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">cut in half</a> and reassembled during a refit in 2014.)</p><p>Relatives of the crew and politicians <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-argentina-faces-hope-and-hopelessness-in-submarine-search-2017-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">extended</a> that <a href="https://elpais.com/internacional/2017/11/23/actualidad/1511447935_134725.html?id_externo_rsoc=TW_CM" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">criticism</a> to military-spending levels, which have declined since the country's dictatorship fell in 1983 and are currently well below the regional and global averages. Marcelo Srur, left, chief of the general staff of the navy, in Buenos Aires, November 24, 2017.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"This has translated into something very concrete: 90% of the equipment of the armed forces of Argentina is between 30 and 50 years old," Rosendo Fraga, a defense expert, <a href="https://elpais.com/internacional/2017/11/23/actualidad/1511447935_134725.html?id_externo_rsoc=TW_CM" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">told El Pais</a>, noting that the 32-year-old San Juan was one of the navy's more modern ships.</p><p>The country's armed forces are seeing an increase in accidents related to the age of the equipment as well as limits on resources for maintenance and training, Fraga said.</p><p>Several Argentine patrol planes are currently <a href="http://www.janes.com/article/75921/submarine-emergency-exposes-argentina-s-serviceability-limitations" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">grounded</a> and unable to join the search because of a lack of spare parts and long overdue maintenance.</p><p>The incident also could have political repercussions, <a href="https://elpais.com/internacional/2017/11/23/actualidad/1511447935_134725.html?id_externo_rsoc=TW_CM" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">exacerbating tensions</a> between the country's political leadership and President Mauricio Macri, whose <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/23/world/americas/argentina-submarine-explosion.html?_r=0" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">efforts</a> to update the military's hardware are still in the early stages.</p><p>Macri visited crew members' families before military leaders could do so, and because the military was <a href="https://elpais.com/internacional/2017/11/23/actualidad/1511447935_134725.html?id_externo_rsoc=TW_CM" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">less than forthcoming</a> in the hours after losing contact with the sub, Defense Minister Oscar Aguad - who has been on the job for less than five months - learned about the disappearance from the press.</p><p>"Until we find the submarine and have all the information," Macri <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-argentina-faces-hope-and-hopelessness-in-submarine-search-2017-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a> on Friday, "we are not going to speculate on who is at fault."</p><p>But absent confirmation of the sub's fate, the family of its crew members will be left in a painful limbo, according to Guillermo Bruchstein, a local psychologist.</p><p>"The mourning process cannot start, because they are still out there somewhere," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-argentina-faces-hope-and-hopelessness-in-submarine-search-2017-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">he said</a> in a TV interview on Saturday. Argentina is still searching for its missing submarine, but the outcome looks bleak

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman arrives at Long Island MacArthur airport in New York, January 19, 2017, after his extradition from Mexico.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The brewing conflict between aspirants to the Sinaloa cartel throne apparently reached a new stage earlier this month, when gunmen aligned with one cartel leader attacked the sons and a longtime associate of jailed kingpin Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.</p><p>According to a letter purportedly handwritten by Jesús Alfredo and Iván Archivaldo Guzmán, the attack occurred when they, with Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, arrived at a February 4 meeting called by longtime cartel member Dámaso Lopez "on the issue of having evidence that Dámaso López ordered the kidnapping of the sons of 'El Chapo,'" which <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/el-chapo-guzmans-son-kidnapped-at-gunpoint-in-mexico-video-2016-8" target="_blank">took place in August</a>.</p><p>Upon their arrival at the meeting site - reportedly in Badiraguato, the Sinaloa municipality <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/attack-on-el-chapo-guzmans-mothers-house-looming-cartel-war-2016-6" target="_blank">where "El Chapo" Guzmán was born</a> - gunmen opened fire on them. According to the letter, which was <a href="https://twitter.com/CiroGomezL/status/829543769481437185" target="_blank">originally published</a> by Mexican journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva, some of the bodyguards were killed instantly.</p><p>At that point, according to the letter, the brothers "realized they were betrayed by el licenciado Dámaso López, trying to kill them and end completely" the Guzmán family line, the letter <a href="http://www.sinembargo.mx/08-02-2017/3148011" target="_blank">states</a>, referring to López as "licenciado" in reference to his <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword> degree.</p><p>"This in fact did happen," Mike Vigil, a former chief of <keyword id="6356001" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="international">international</keyword> operations for the US Drug Enforcement Administration, told Business Insider, citing conversations he had with Mexican security officials.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>(AP Photo/Rashide Frias)</span></p><p class="caption">A Mexican marine looks at the body of a gunman next to a vehicle after a gun fight in Culiacan, February 7, 2017. "They killed some of their bodyguards, but they were able to [get] away."</p><p>The Guzmán sons and Zambada fled the scene, but encountered other armed men with orders from López to kill them. The letter <a href="http://www.sinembargo.mx/08-02-2017/3148011" target="_blank">says</a> they traveled several kilometers before finding a small town where they received aid for the wounds they sustained, though it's not clear if "El Mayo" Zambada was wounded.</p><p>"Apparently [the gunmen] didn't wait for these guys to get out of the vehicle when they started shooting," said Vigil, author of "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Metal-Coffins-Alliance-Cartel-Miguel/dp/0991582195?tag=bisafetynet-20" target="_blank">Metal Coffins: The Blood Alliance Cartel</a>."</p><p>"Had they waited until they got out of the vehicle, they would've probably killed them," he added.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://internacional.elpais.com/internacional/2016/08/17/mexico/1471387881_393826.html?id_externo_rsoc=TW_CM">US government/El Pais</a></span></p><p class="caption">Jesus Alfredo Guzmán, in a photo released by the US government.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>José Refugio, a Mexican lawyer who represents "El Chapo" Guzmán, acknowledged the letter in an interview with Mexico's Radio Formula.</p><p>"I had knowledge of this. I knew of that letter, and I knew they made that letter" he <a href="http://www.univision.com/noticias/narcotrafico/una-supuesta-carta-de-los-hijos-de-el-chapo-relata-que-resultaron-heridos-en-una-emboscada" target="_blank">said</a>. "But it did not arrive through me."</p><p>The Dámaso López referenced in the letter appears to be Dámaso López Nuñez, a high-level leader for the Sinaloa cartel who was <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mexican-government-sinaloa-cartel-cooperation" target="_blank">rumored to be Guzmán's successor</a> after his arrest in February 2014.</p><p>López Nuñez, originally from Sinaloa state, was a police officer in that state and later deputy director for security at Puente Grande prison in Jalisco state when "El Chapo" Guzmán was there in the 1990s and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mexican-government-sinaloa-cartel-cooperation" target="_blank">aided the kingpin's escape</a> in 2001.</p><p>"He's a former police officer, and he's also an attorney, and he's got a son that ... they call him 'Mini Lic,' or 'Mini licenciado,' or 'Mini Attorney,' who apparently also is tied to the Sinaloa cartel [and] apparently works out of Baja California Sur," Vigil said.</p><p>In 2013, the US Treasury identified López Nuñez as a principal lieutenant of the Sinaloa cartel, because of his alleged role the cartel's drug trafficking and money laundering activities.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>US Treasury Department</span></p><p class="caption">A US Treasury Department chart of top Sinaloa cartel officials, released in January 2013.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Because of his law degree, López Nuñez is nicknamed "El Licenciado."</p><p>The letter refers to him as such, suggesting he was in fact behind the attack. However, some <a href="http://www.telesurtv.net/english/news/El-Chapo-Guzmans-Sons-Wounded-in-Cartel-Attack-20170209-0039.html" target="_blank">reports</a> of the <a href="http://www.proceso.com.mx/473746/hijos-chapo-denuncian-ataque-parte-mini-lic-estarian-heridos" target="_blank">incident</a> cite "El Mini Lic" - López Nuñez's son, <a href="http://www.excelsior.com.mx/nacional/2017/02/08/1145181" target="_blank">Dámaso López Serrano</a> - as the culprit. The younger López, <a href="http://www.univision.com/noticias/narcotrafico/una-supuesta-carta-de-los-hijos-de-el-chapo-relata-que-resultaron-heridos-en-una-emboscada" target="_blank">37 years old</a>, is reportedly the founder of Los Antrax, an armed wing of the Sinaloa cartel.</p><p>López Nuñez is the son of Dámaso López García, who was a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party in Sinaloa. The PRI is also the party Mexico's current president, Enrique Peña Nieto.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Henry Romero</span></p><p class="caption">Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto gives a speech in Mexico City.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The link between the López family and the PRI has added to suspicions that the party is currently tied to drug trafficking - a belief bolstered by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mexican-government-sinaloa-cartel-cooperation" target="_blank">the party's involvement with the drug trade</a> in the latter half of the 20th century, when it governed Mexico as a de facto one-party state.</p><p>The attack on the Guzmán sons and "El Mayo" Zambada comes amid a spike in violence in Sinaloa state, which has picked up in the months since <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sinaloa-jalisco-new-generation-cartel-balance-power-mexico-2017-2" target="_blank">the elder Guzmán's extradition</a> in late January.</p><p>There were <a href="https://www.elsiglodetorreon.com.mx/noticia/1309863.fin-de-semana-violento-en-sinaloa-12-muertes.html" target="_blank">12 people</a> were killed in the state over the weekend, with four people killed in Culiacan in two shootings just 40 minutes apart.</p><p>In 72 hours between Sunday and Tuesday, <a href="http://internacional.elpais.com/internacional/2017/02/09/mexico/1486600880_644724.html?id_externo_rsoc=FB_MX_CM" target="_blank">13 more people</a> were slain in five shootouts between criminal groups.</p><p>The state's public security secretary, Gen. "I think there were quite a few murders.
