The problems surrounding Zomato and Oyo Zomato was caught in the throes of a very public controversy thanks to its deep discounting programmes like Zomato Gold (where consumers can avail 1+1 on food and 2+2 on drinks) and infinity dining. The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) launched a ‘logout’ movement last month claiming that the business practices of aggregators are unethical. The movement saw hundreds of restaurants delisting from the app. But that’s not the end of it. Zomato’s delivery executives across Mumbai and Bengaluru are protesting for pay cuts. The company is also in the news for reportedly laying off employees at its Gurgaon headquarters. Oyo is in no better position. On one hand, it is battling legal complaints from a Bengaluru-based hotelier accusing Agarwal of cheating and breach of trust. A month ago, hoteliers too had begun boycotting Oyo, but the Delhi High Court had ruled the case in the company’s favour. To tackle these issues, Zomato reportedly held several meetings with the NRAI. It also backtracked by cutting off discounts from its Zomato Gold programme. It has also put its recently launched Infinity Dining programme on a ‘pause’ mode. Oyo, on the other hand, has refuted all claims against its founder and has been unfazed through its expansion journey globally. The branding has taken a hit Startups and their success is important not just because of their disruptive nature, but their popularity has made them almost invincible with a ‘can-do’ attitude. These issues have come to prove that it is not the case. And, it has started to show. This is evident in its survey rankings. YouGov measures a brand by the buzz it generates in two weeks. Zomato’s Buzz fell by 6.8 points, from 42.7 in the beginning of July, to 35.9 in August end. “Zomato’s Brand Index score which is an average of quality, value, impression, reputation, satisfaction and recommend scores, has also fallen from 38.5 on 31st July to 34.9 on 31st August 2019, the time period marked by the two controversies,” said YouGov. This is a big blow for Zomato which is known for its witty, quirky marketing campaigns on and off-line that has caught the fancy of millennials. The company however said that its own internal tracking system shows no significant dip in perception in the last 3 months. "On the contrary, metrics such as trust, brand love, innovation, etc. have shown consistent upswing. These metrics are tracked diligently on a daily/weekly/monthly basis and none of the external noise has impacted our core consumer perception in a negative manner. In fact, we have noted a spike in the user engagement with an increase in average time spent on the app, session counts, weekly downloads, etc. These results from continuous monitoring have reaffirmed our current approach towards consumer engagement and product innovation,” said a Zomato spokesperson. Brand expert Harish Bijoor believes that Zomato and Oyo both need to be worried. “We live in the era of nano-second social media hurt. Every social media comment that is hurtful to the brand is a scar. Too many scars, and the brand can get into a negative tizzy. Brands need to be careful, and more importantly quick in their reactions to issues. Both Zomato and Oyo have been through this. As of now, the brand image has not been hurt. it has been jolted, but not damaged,” said Bijoor.

<ul><li>Silicon Valley startup Airbnb has picked up stake in <keyword id="2550719" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="OYO-Rooms">OYO Rooms</keyword>, India's largest hotel rooms aggregator.</li><li>Business Insider had interviewed Airbnb's co-founder Nathan Blecharczyk earlier in March.</li><li>Here are excerpts from his thoughts on the potential for Airbnb in India.</li></ul>One of Silicon Valley's hottest startups, Airbnb, is betting big on India. The startup, which is a marketplace for people offering and looking for homestays and was reportedly valued at $31 billion at last count, has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/home-renting-giant-airbnb-invests-in-indian-unicorn-oyo-rooms/articleshow/68670636.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">picked up a stake</a> in a rival hotel rooms aggregator, OYO Rooms, today. Both companies are looking at opportunities to collaborate on a range of projects, including making OYO accommodations available on the Airbnb platform, a source told Business Insider. While Airbnb has not offered an official comment yet, here is an interview with the co-founder of Airbnb, Nathan Blecharzyk, that was conducted before the deal was announced. The following are the edited excerpts of the answers on the India-specific questions, including one about its competition with OYO, received via email on March 13. Q. Airbnb had aimed to sign up 50,000 homestays in India by 2020. How far have you come? And what is your projection for, say, 2025? How big a part of the global business will India be by 2025? Since the last time I was in India (which was early 2016) our community of hosts has gone from strength to strength and the number of Airbnb listings in India has increased by more than 150%. Our loyal community of hosts have welcomed more than 1.25 million travelers during that period, over 60% of which occurred in just the past 12 months. That growth isn’t just limited to foreign travelers; domestic travel on Airbnb in India has increased by 78% in the past year. Travel to emerging economies is expected to increase at twice the rate of travel to advanced economies from now until 2030 and emerging markets like India are leading the way. With over 45,000 listings, India is a key market for Airbnb. More than one million Indians have chosen Airbnb for their travel globally just last year alone, indicating a tremendous demand for Airbnb among the travellers. Needless to say, India continues to be a promising market for us. We are now working towards achieving 1 billion Airbnb users in the next ten years and India will play an important role in helping us achieve that goal. Q. Are you disillusioned by the recent policy developments in India? Has that affected how bullish you are on India? To the contrary, we’re committed to working closely with policymakers in India and we’ve worked diligently with them to promote home sharing. Q. How big a role do discounts play in Airbnb’s business model? Our platform is fuelled by hosts and guests who are loyal to Airbnb because we treat them like members of a community, not commodities. As a result, Airbnb isn’t governed by discounts and cash backs. Q. Other companies like OYO rooms have scaled their business much faster in India. Was it a conscious decision on part of Airbnb to go slow in India? If yes, why? We don’t typically comment on competitors. Travel and tourism is a large and growing industry in India, and there are going to be a lot of winners here. We are deeply committed to our community in India, we have a thriving business and we’re deeply optimistic about our future. Q. Is Airbnb going to remain a product for English-speaking urban elites? Does it not cap the scalability of the business? India is on its way to becoming one of the new ‘centres of influence’ in global tourism, and it’s going to be an engine of our growth, for us as we aim to welcome one billion users onto our platform in the next ten years. We really think Airbnb can be for everyone, and we have started to focus on specific segments and customize the products for those segments. We have our Plus offering, we have a high end luxury offering as well, and we also have Airbnb for Work, which is actually doing very well in India and it grew about four-fold year over year in India with about 6,500 companies that have signed up to do business travel directly with Airbnb. Q. How feasible it is to sell airline tickets in India? It is a heavily competitive market and deep discounts are imperative? We’re not interested in building our own airline or creating just another place on the Internet where you can buy a plane ticket, but there is a tremendous opportunity to improve the transportation experience for everyone. We’re going to explore a broad range of ideas and partnerships that can make transportation better. We haven’t settled on exactly what those will look like. Q. Will it be easier for you to focus on Indian travellers who are headed abroad than to convince Indians to share their homes with strangers? Would that be your approach to evade some of the policy and infrastructure challenges? Global tourism is growing rapidly and as citizens, businesses and policy-makers open up to the sharing economy phenomenon, and we are seeing increased interest in emerging economies like India. Our loyal community of hosts have welcomed more than 1.25 million travelers since 2016, over 60% of which occured in just the past 12 months. Our growth isn’t just limited to foreign travelers. Domestic travel on Airbnb in India has increased by 78% in the past year. India has approx 410 million millennials, that’s more than the entire population of the US. This group increasingly makes up the dominant segment of consumers, and are looking for new and authentic travel experiences. So while India sees close to 1.2 million outbound travellers, the number of domestic guest arrivals on Airbnb in India increased by almost 78%, last year. We are also planning to focus to more on mainstream domestic travel over the course of the next 2 years i.e. by 2020-21 in line with the origin total addressable market of $17.5 billion which is dominated by domestic business, which is 74% of total total addressable market. But the system has now started revolting and it could be another trouble that they have to solve. Here’s a look at how trouble is brewing for the companies. Amazon and Flipkart Amazon and Flipkart are united in a rare case – where they both are facing a protest from the Confederation Of All India <keyword id="6371444" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="traders">Traders</keyword> (CAIT). While trader protests have been a part of the e-commerce journey so far in India, it has intensified with the CAIT now seeking a <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/cait-seeks-probe-into-alleged-avoidance-of-tax-liability-by-amazon-flipkart-11574620469832.html">probe </a>against Amazon and Flipkart. The CAIT alleged that Amazon and Flipkart are evading tax. It said that the companies are selling products for much lower than their fair price value, thus avoiding a larger GST cost. “Since FDI is governed by the FEMA and the Reserve Bank of India, it is demanded that an another enquiry may also be initiated on pattern of receivable funding and its disbursement," CAIT <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/cait-seeks-probe-into-alleged-avoidance-of-tax-liability-by-amazon-flipkart-11574620469832.html">said.</a> Earlier, the CAIT also organised a nationwide protest against the deep discounting of products on Amazon and Flipkart. OYO OYO brought Indian budget hotels online and shot to fame thanks to its many customers. But hotel owners who they work with are alleging that OYO’s practices are unethical. Recently, a Bengaluru hotelier filed a cheating case against Agarwal and six others claiming that the OYO hasn’t paid him his dues. According to the complaint, OYO was supposed to pay ₹7 lakh a month for room bookings but failed to do so since May 2019. OYO responded stating that it would fight back with a complaint against the hotelier for "using improper legal means to sensationalise a civil dispute and get attention". “This matter is currently sub-judice, and we are not at the liberty of commenting on specifics. Having said that, we strongly refute the claims made in the complaint that has been wrongfully filed against our founder and six other office bearers, based on false allegations and exaggeration on a regular commercial dispute,” the company said in a statement. The case of the Bengaluru hotelier is not isolated. Similar reports have surfaced from across the country against <a href="https://www.thenewsminute.com/article/why-many-hotel-owners-across-india-are-agitated-oyos-business-model-106154">OYO</a>. Zomato Indian foodtech unicorn has had a rough few months thanks to one of its bestselling features – Zomato Gold. The National Restaurant Association of India protested against the feature saying that Zomato advertised the ‘elite’ feature which turned out to be a mass product. This resulted in thousands of restaurateurs logging out of Zomato. The foodtech aggregator had shut down the logout movement by not offering discounts for its gold membership. However, it also extended the service for home delivery, where users could avail the 1+1 and 2+2 offers. Let’sBunk is also trying the Co-Working space model where they use their living room area as a workspace for freelancers and startup owners that can add to the concept. Poshtels in Delhi are the perfect place for remotely working professionals

Trouble began when the <keyword id="3187949" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hotel-Aggregators">hotel aggregators</keyword> started undercutting and promising more than the <keyword id="6368036" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hotels">hotels</keyword> could provide. 
 
The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=hotel+aggregators">hotel aggregators</a> were at their peak as they were getting lot of customers in 2015 and had tied with as many as 1000 hotels. 
 
However, the experience, over the time, turned sour for the aggregators. 
 
ET reported an incident in which Sunil J Trivedi of Riverview Hotel in Ahmedabad said aggregators do not put everything on the site, which misleads the customer. 
 
"Undercutting is totally not tolerable in this industry as it is harmful for our business and goodwill. This clearly impacted the customers coming to us as sometimes we got day-use kind of bookings, which we never take," said Trivedi. 
 
Likewise, there are many instances in which hotels are snapping ties with the aggregators now. 
 
As per reports, over 200 hotels have apparently ended ties with leading aggregators Oyo <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=oyo+rooms">Rooms</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=zo+rooms">Zo</a> in the last five-six months. 
Another problem that hotels are facing is of payments. 
 
A Mumbai-based hotelier Karl Kerawalla took to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=twitter">Twitter</a> to complain about a non-payment issue. 
 
Hotels say due to a plethora of issues their loyal customers are turning away, which could lead to a major problem in the long run. 
 
Manav Thadani, chairman, HVS Asia Pacific told ET, "While there has been a lot of hype about the aggregator model, how many will survive depends on the management and having solid processes in place rather than deep discounting to win the game."

 After having tied up with <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword>, <keyword id="143842" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mobikwik">MobiKwik</keyword> and <keyword id="830092" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> to solve basic problems of travel, payment and food, the company is now busy finding ways to do away with check-in formalities and time-consuming manual check-out procedures – two tedious processes each and every Indian customer has to go through at every hotel in the country. The idea is to ensure easy walk-ins and walk-outs for a hassle-free experience. 
 <keyword id="1670338" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ritesh-Agarwal">Ritesh Agarwal</keyword>, the 21-year-old CEO of the OYO Rooms who has already inspired one whole generation of youth with his start-up, says he wants that his customers savor luxury, service and comfort of staying at a hotel but also feel at home at the same time. It’s not possible, however, by adhering to the conventional ways of running the hotel business, he feels. 
 
“Showing your ID while entering or doing a manual check-out when leaving – are these the things you do at home? No. If I have them in hotels, how will you feel at home during your stay then?” asks Ritesh. But the question is how is OYO planning to ease the process of payments? 
 
Via tech-based initiatives is Mr Agarwal’s answer! 
 
So for example, the company has seamlessly integrated the MobiKwik wallet into the OYO app. “It facilitates one tap payment. It’s like checking-out of a hotel without the need of stopping to pay,” says Ritesh, adding that such valued partnerships are helping him in maximizing the consumer experience as well as making OYO services better. 
 
For that matter, even his partnerships with OLA and Zomato have helped him in a similar way – finding transport to OYO properties and making the nearest food options accessible to the customers. Both being basic needs of OYO customers that needed to be addressed. 
 
So, OYO's strategy is simple – identifying the pain points first and rather intelligently (which many in the game have failed to see or perhaps ignored) and immediately addressing them by providing the customer easy on-the-go options. 
 
Even though the budget hotel aggregator has no plans of foraying into other sectors as of now, with the launch of OYO WE it is definitely trying to diversify within the sector. 
 
The idea of WE was born after OYO, Ritesh says, was flooded with queries from customers asking if there were any women specific properties. 
 
Realizing that there was a demand for it, he was quick to launch WE in January this year. “It met with tremendous response and excellent feedback from the women guests. Now, we want to provide more women with a comfortable zone which gives them their privacy and space,” says Ritesh. 
 
Notably, WE has all women staff, a toiletry kit customized for women, on-call beauty parlor services and a special selection of books. Currently, there are three WE properties in Gurgaon, Delhi and Noida. The plan is to have fifteen WE properties across 10 cities by the end of this year. 
 
That’s not all. Talks are also on between OYO and Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation for bringing in occupants for MTDC's unsold rooms in resorts. The deal may be sealed under a revenue-share agreement model. 
 
“It’s a great opportunity and will enable us to bring our experience of operation and sales to a large number of properties. Also, through this partnership we will gain access to running some of Maharashtra’s favorite hotels, and we can’t be more thrilled about it. We are still in the process of finalizing things with them,” says Ritesh. 
 
So much on OYO's future plans. 
 
For now, it has announced offers keeping in mind the upcoming festive season. It’s running a flat 30% off pan India, for check-in/check-out till 31 October. (Coupon Code: OYOS30); a flat 50% off on OYO’s select premium properties, Pan India on properties above 2000 INR (Code: PR50). Those heading to Goa during the peak season (October, November and December), there's good news as the company is giving 30% discount across all its properties there. (Code: GOA30). 
 
As the demand graph for OYO Rooms goes up among customers as well as hotels, it plans to expand to 150 cities and to have 50,000 rooms in the country by the end of the year. The bigger aspiration, however, is to be present everywhere in India while focusing on transforming the sector on its way.

Total assets under management (<keyword id="135675" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AUM" source="Orion">AUM</keyword>) for the <keyword id="6354820" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mutual-fund" source="Orion">mutual fund</keyword> industry declined for the second consecutive month to Rs 35.6 trillion (-4.2 per cent month-on-month) in June'22 -- the lowest level since August'21 -- led by a decline in AUM for income (Rs 711b), equities (Rs 405b), liquid (Rs 219b), other ETFs (Rs 115b). A report by <keyword id="113829" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="motilal-oswal-financial-services" source="Orion">Motilal Oswal Financial Services</keyword> said <keyword id="6391506" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="equity" source="Orion">equity</keyword> AUM for domestic MFs (including ELSS and index funds) decreased 2.9 per cent MoM to Rs 13.8t in June'22. This was due to a decline in equity scheme sales (down 7.6 per cent MoM to Rs 355b). Further, market indices closed lower (the <keyword id="6354813" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nifty" source="Orion">Nifty</keyword> was down 4.8 per cent MoM). At the same time, redemptions dipped 15.4 per cent MoM to Rs 127b - at a 25-month low. Consequently, net inflows declined marginally to Rs 228b in June'22, from Rs 234b in May'22. The month saw notable changes in the sector and stock allocation of funds. On a MoM basis, the weights of automobiles, oil &amp; gas, consumer, healthcare, telecom, and PSU banks increased, while the weights of private banks, metals, NBFCs, cement, retail, utilities, textiles, insurance, and chemicals moderated. Automobiles' weight increased for the third consecutive month to a 42-month high of 7.6 per cent (+50bp MoM, +110bp YoY). The sector now ranks third in the allocation of mutual funds -- it was in the fourth position a month back. Oil &amp; Gas weight stands at a 18-month high of 7.3 per cent (+20bp MoM and +40bp YoY).
