But on a year-on-year basis, Paytm's revenue dipped significantly by 34%. Intrigued by these promises, the victim enrolled in online classes that were promoted within the group. These sessions, held through private links shared on WhatsApp, promised to teach participants how to make money by investing in the stock market. Singh continued to assure group members that his expertise would guide them to financial success. The victim, trusting his guidance, began to invest small amounts of money on a platform called Skyrim Capital, which Singh claimed was a legitimate trading platform. At first, the victim saw some returns on his investment, which only encouraged him to invest more. The initial success built his confidence, and over time, he transferred a total of Rs 50 lakh into multiple investments, believing that he was making wise financial decisions. However, when the victim attempted to withdraw his funds, he was unable to do so. The platform blocked his attempts, and when he tried to contact Singh, he received no response. The truth behind the scam The victim soon realised that he had been scammed. The platform, Skyrim Capital, turned out to be nothing more than a front for fraudulent activity, and Singh had disappeared with the man’s money. The scam had been carefully designed to build trust initially, only to betray the victim when he tried to cash out. The fraudsters used the lure of high returns and expert advice to convince the victim to keep investing larger sums, ultimately draining his finances. This scam is just one of many that have been reported in India, with cybercriminals exploiting the convenience and popularity of platforms like WhatsApp to reach potential victims. The incidence of prostate cancer in the under-50 age group has increased significantly, they have pointed out. Although symptoms are often absent in the early stages, men should be aware of the potential warning signs, including difficulty in urinating, frequent urination (especially at night), blood in the urine or semen and pain in the hips, back or pelvis, he said. The experts have warned against a delay in diagnosis and treatment, given that it can prove to be fatal. Most often, the symptoms of prostate cancer are either ignored or neglected, leading to advanced stages of the disease. "We are observing a rise in prostate cancer cases in young adults, which was earlier associated with adults aged above 50 years. Cancer reports among younger males aged 35 to 44 residing in metropolitan regions have recently increased," Gupta said. Advances in medical technology, including robotic surgeries and precision radiation, have significantly improved the prognosis for prostate cancer patients. However, the fear of being diagnosed, combined with societal pressures on men to stay silent about health issues, prevents many from seeking timely medical advice. Modern treatment methods like immunotherapy, targeted therapy and a combination of radiation therapy and chemotherapy are proving to be an effective treatment option and giving a new lease of life to prostate cancer patients, Gupta said. Dr Tanvi Sood, a medical oncologist at the Paras Hospital in Gurugram, said, "Prostate cancer is increasing in young men around the globe. It is known to be more aggressive in nature and usually diagnosed at an advanced stage. Increased screening may have contributed to increased diagnosis in younger men. However, there could also be a hereditary genetic syndrome causing prostate cancer in the men in a family." Timely diagnosis can help start the right treatment like surgery, hormonal therapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy. It is very important to check for hereditary genetic mutations in all prostate cancer patients, especially young patients, Sood underlined. Gupta concluded that men with a family history of prostate cancer are at a higher risk, especially if someone's father, brother or uncle was diagnosed with the disease. Genetic factors play a role, so those with a family history should consider earlier and more frequent screenings, he added. Healthy lifestyle habits can help reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, along with regular physical activity, can support prostate health. Reducing red meat and fat intake, along with avoiding smoking, can also help lower the risk, Gupta said. By staying informed, opting for regular screenings and following healthy lifestyle choices, men can significantly reduce the risks associated with prostate cancer, he added.

Online scams in India have been on the rise for the last few months and every now and then, a new case surfaces where a victim loses their hard-earned money. Usually, scammers in many cases pose as company officials to steal your sensitive information and misuse it. In one such recent incident, a 44-year-old woman from <keyword id="19895934" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="noida" source="keywords">Noida</keyword> recently fell victim to an <keyword id="20971199" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="esim-scam" source="Orion">eSIM scam</keyword>, losing ₹27 lakh and becoming the target of fraudulent loan activity. The scam involved the manipulation of her <keyword id="19909735" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sim" source="keywords">SIM</keyword> card and banking details, which allowed the fraudster to siphon off her funds and take out a loan in her name. <h2>What exactly happened</h2> According to an HT report, <keyword id="23110017" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jyotsana-bhatia" source="keywords">Jyotsana Bhatia</keyword>, a resident of Sector 82 in Noida, works at a private company and filed a complaint with the cybercrime police station in Sector 36. On August 31, Bhatia received a WhatsApp call from a person posing as a customer care executive from her telecom provider. The caller explained that her SIM card could be converted to an embedded SIM (eSIM), which is a digital version of a physical SIM card and can be helpful in case of phone loss. The suspect offered to help Bhatia activate the eSIM feature, instructing her to select the option in her mobile carrier’s application and enter a verification code that was sent to her phone. Bhatia, unaware of the fraud, followed the steps as instructed. Unfortunately, as soon as she entered the code, her physical SIM card was deactivated. The suspect assured her that a new SIM card would be delivered by September 1, leaving her temporarily without access to her mobile number. When the promised SIM card failed to arrive, Bhatia contacted the telecom provider’s customer care service and was advised to visit the service centre to get a replacement. After three days, on September 3, she was issued a new SIM card. However, by then, the damage had already been done. Bhatia started receiving messages from her bank, revealing that the fraudster had accessed her mobile banking account using her deactivated phone number. By changing the associated email ID, the suspect was able to bypass security checks and transfer large sums of money from her accounts. The fraudster also broke her fixed deposit, siphoned money from two bank accounts, and even took out a loan of ₹7.40 lakh in her name. Bhatia reported that the total amount stolen in multiple transactions amounted to ₹27 lakh. Shocked by the breach, she immediately filed an FIR with the cybercrime unit. The police registered the case under sections 318(4) (cheating) and 319(2) (cheating by personation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as under relevant sections of the IT Act. Efforts to track down the suspect are currently underway. <h2>Understanding eSIM and its risks </h2> An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital version of a SIM card that is built into a device and does not require a physical card. While this technology is convenient and allows users to switch networks or plans without handling a physical card, it also opens the door to new forms of fraud. Scammers can manipulate eSIM features to deactivate a user’s existing SIM card and take control of their phone number, which is linked to various accounts and services. In this case, the fraudster exploited the victim’s trust by posing as a telecom customer care executive, taking advantage of her lack of knowledge about the risks associated with eSIM activation. Once the fraudster gained control of her phone number, they accessed her bank accounts through mobile banking applications that rely on the phone number for authentication. By changing the email ID linked to her account, they prevented the victim from receiving security alerts and were able to make unauthorised transactions without her knowledge.

Expressing "serious concern" over <keyword id="19902052" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pendency" source="keywords">pendency</keyword> of a large number of <keyword id="22472776" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="cheque-bounce-cases" source="keywords">cheque bounce cases</keyword>, the <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Supreme Court" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Supreme Court">Supreme Court</keyword> has said courts should encourage <keyword id="20151747" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="compounding" source="keywords">compounding</keyword> of offences under the <keyword id="20905075" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Negotiable-Instruments-Act" source="keywords">Negotiable Instruments Act</keyword> if parties are willing to reach a compromise. A bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Ahsanuddin Amanullah set aside the conviction of a man named P Kumarasamy in a cheque bounce case, after noting that the parties have entered into a <keyword id="21163406" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="settlement-agreement" source="keywords">settlement agreement</keyword> and Rs 5.25 lakh has been paid to the complainant. "A large number of cases involving dishonour of cheques are pending before courts which is a serious concern for our judicial system. Keeping in mind that the 'compensatory aspect' of remedy shall have priority over the 'punitive aspect', courts should encourage compounding of offences under the NI Act if parties are willing to do so," the bench said in its July 11 order. The Negotiable Instruments Act governs all negotiable instruments like promissory notes, bills of exchange, and cheques. Compoundable offences are those where a compromise can be reached by the rival parties. The bench said it has to be remembered that dishonour of cheques is a <keyword id="22472777" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="regulatory-offence" source="keywords">regulatory offence</keyword> which was made an offence only in view of public interest so that the reliability of these instruments can be ensured. "Considering the totality of the circumstances and compromise between the parties, we allow this appeal and acquit the appellants by setting aside the impugned order dated April 1, 2019 as well the trial court's order dated October 16, 2012. Appellant no.2 (P Kumarasamy), who was exempted from surrendering by this Court, need not surrender and his sureties are hereby discharged," the bench ordered. The bench noted that in 2006, P Kumarasamy alias Ganesh had borrowed Rs 5,25,000 from respondent A Subramaniam but did not repay the loan. To discharge the debt, the bench said, Kumarasamy gave a cheque for Rs 5.25 lakh in the name of his partnership firm M/s New Win Export. "Since the cheque was dishonoured due to insufficient funds, respondent filed a complaint under Section 138 NI Act against the appellants where the trial court vide order dated October 16, 2012 convicted the appellants and imposed a sentence of one year of simple imprisonment each," it said. It noted Kumarasamy challenged the conviction before the appellate court, which reversed the findings of the trial court and acquitted him and the firm. "Finally, when the matter was taken to the high court at the instance of the respondent/complainant, the high court in its order dated April 1, 2019 set aside the order of the appellate court and restored the order of the trial court, convicting the appellants," the bench noted. It noted the firm and Kumarsamy challenged the high court order before the apex court. The bench added that Section 147 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 makes all offences under it compoundable. "In our opinion, this settlement agreement can be treated to be compounding of the offence. All the same, Section 320 (5) of CrPC provides that if compounding has to be done after conviction, then it can only be done with the leave of the court where appeal against such conviction is pending," it said. The bench said in cases where the accused relies upon some document for compounding the offence at the appellate stage, courts shall try to check the veracity of such documents. "For the same, in the present matter, this court vide order dated March 18, 2024 had asked the respondent-complainant to file an affidavit to bring on record whether or not any compromise has been reached between the parties," it said. The bench said an affidavit was filed by the complainant in compliance with the order where it was said that the accused have paid the amount to the satisfaction of the complainant, and that he has no objection if conviction of the appellants is set aside. "Now, when the accused and complainant have reached a settlement permissible by law and this court has also satisfied itself regarding the genuineness of the settlement, we think that the conviction of the appellants would not serve any purpose and thus, it is required to be set aside," it said.

The independent lab report showed the presence of sugar and carbohydrates, contradicting the company's claims of a sugar-free product. Following a notice to the company that went unanswered, Shekhawat filed a complaint with the consumer forum. The sitting Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram also declared a total income of over Rs 4.32 crore in the financial year 2022-2023. Giving details of his assets and liabilities in the affidavit filed along with his nomination papers, <keyword id="20304436" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tharoor" source="keywords">Tharoor</keyword> said he has immovable assets of over Rs 49 crore that includes deposits of varying amounts in 19 bank accounts and investments in various bonds, debentures, mutual funds, among others, he has said in his affidavit. His movable assets also include 534 grams of gold worth Rs 32 lakh and Rs 36,000 as cash in hand, according to his affidavit. His immovable assets are worth over Rs 6.75 crore which includes an inherited one-fourth share, now worth Rs 1.56 lakh, in a 2.51 acre agricultural land in Palakkad, a self acquired 10.47 acre land in Thiruvananthapuram that is presently worth over Rs 6.20 crore and his residence in the state capital that is valued now at around Rs 52 lakh. The Congress MP owns two cars, a Maruti Ciaz and a Maruti XL6, the affidavit said. Tharoor, who has a PhD in Law and Diplomacy from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Tufts University, USA) and a Doctor of Letters in International Affairs (Honorary) from University of Puget Sound, USA, is named as an accused in nine cases across the country. Most of the FIRs against him are for allegedly promoting enmity between different groups and one case in Kerala is for unlawful assembly and rioting. He is also facing four court cases of which two are for defamation -- one each in Kerala and Delhi -- and one is in Kolkata for allegedly promoting enmity between different groups, the affidavit said. In 2014, Tharoor had declared assets of over Rs 23 crore and in 2019, over Rs 35 crore.
