On the occasion of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=women%27s+day">International Women’s Day</a>, we decided to profile three women <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ola+drivers">Ola drivers </a>who have braved the odds, followed their passion and did not give up when times were tough. 
 
These three women are a beacon of inspiration for the rest of us. Whenever you feel like it couldn’t get worse, remember you can either be the person who feels sorry for yourself or you can work harder to ensure you achieve what you have been dreaming for, irrespective of the challenges. 
 
 
 
 
1. Shantham R, <keyword id="3275829" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ola-driver-partner">Ola driver-partner</keyword>, Bengaluru 
 
At the age of 58, when most people think of retirement, Shantham thought of turning into a new leaf by letting her entrepreneurial spirit take wings. Coming from a modest upbringing, life threw her a challenge when her daughter passed away soon after giving birth to her grandson. 
 
Though, she and her husband decided to take the onus of takingcare of their grandson, they were however battling immense financial constraints. 
 Shantham’s determination to ensure that her grandson gets the best education opportunities led her to joining <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword>. 
 
Today, she owns an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/topic/Ola-Cabs">Ola</a> Auto and is in the position to earn and save more than she did in her previous job. She has been successful in saving about two-thirds of her income till now. 
 
She also has a word of advice for everyone. “The world is yours to conquer. Go ahead, and work towards your dream!” 
 
 
 
 
2. Ganga Reddy Venkataapa, Ola driver-partner, Bengaluru 
 
 
After working as a teacher for the past 15 years, Ganga took the bold step of quitting her job to follow her passion for driving. The fact that she could work on her terms is what motivated her to join Ola. 
 
Even though she’d thought teaching would be an onvious career choice for her, considering she studied B. Com and B.Ed, she never quite enjoyed it. 
 
Apart from the flexible work-timings and self-reliance, her family’s support and her friends’ advice regarding the benefits of the platform pushed her towards becoming a driver-partner with Ola. 
 
Now, she is able to spend more time with her husband, who works in the Indian Railways and her son and daughter, who study in the 7th and 9th standard respectively and earn more money than she was previously earning at the same time. 
 
 
 
 
 
3. Pinky, Ola driver-partner, Delhi 
 
Life has posed Pinky many a hurdles but she hasn’t let that get to her and has always believed in the saying ‘Let the possibilities inspire you more than the obstacles.’ 
 
After the demise of her husband, Pinky had no time to grieve as she was left to fend for her family all alone. Not one to lose courage, Pinky quit her job as a driver with Airport Taxi, where she has been working for years- as it did little to help her financially and joined Ola in a bid to give her family a better quality of life. 
 
She’s been associated with Ola since the last year and now doesn’t only earn more than enough to support her family and ensure her three children get the best education possible. 
 
She not only takes pride in being member of the Ola family but has also been encouraging more and more women to take charge of their lives rather than succumbing to the unfortunate circumstances life throws at them.

Emergency brakes on Ola and Uber in Bengaluru as banks decide against lending to drivers

<ul><li><keyword id="6354720" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola">Ola</keyword> partnered with <keyword id="6199405" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ayushman-bharat">Ayushman Bharat</keyword> - Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana to provide its drivers with a health insurance. </li><li>A pilot project of this collaboration will take place in Delhi-NCR. </li><li>Through this, the drivers will have access to 18,073 government and private hospitals empaneled under PM-JAY.</li></ul>Indian ride hailing unicorn Ola partnered with the government’s Ayushman Bharat to offer health insurance benefits to its drivers and their families. “We are addressing the evolving needs of our driver-partners, offering them, and their families, access to reliable and quality healthcare services,” said Vijay Ghadge, Vice President- Operations, Ola. Through this initiative, <keyword id="2777438" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola-drivers">Ola drivers</keyword> will get access to Ayushman Bharat - Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, the government’s healthcare scheme. While the initiative will be initially available to Ola’s drivers in Delhi NCR, it will soon be rolled out to the over 2 million drivers on the ride hailing platform. “Hundreds of thousands of eligible driver-partners will be able to access in-patient care for serious illnesses at a country-wide network of 18,073 government and private hospitals empaneled under PM-JAY,” the company said. The company launched several initiatives under its Ola Foundation. It plans to impart skills to 500,000 women by 2025. The foundation will also provide employment-linked skills training, financial literacy and social empowerment through life-skills education.

Ola partners with Ayushman Bharat to provide health benefits to its drivers

New Delhi, Mar 21 () Ride-hailing firm Ola will offer a floater insurance cover of up to Rs 30,000 crore for its around 20 lakh registered driver partners and their spouses in case they are hit by coronavirus infection. "All eligible Ola driver-partners and their spouses shall be covered by a floater sum of Rs 30,000 under which they can receive a compensation of Rs 1,000 per day for a maximum of 21 days for an individual from the date of a positive diagnosis for COVID- 19," Ola said in a statement. Ola partners can claim for the cover for hospital as well as home quarantine prescribed by a qualified medical practitioner, as approved by the government norms from time to time."Drivers can make a claim for this compensation for themselves and (or) their spouse by providing appropriate medical documents. This coverage comes in with immediate effect and is available for all Ola driver-partners in India across all categories including Ola Bike, Ola Auto, Ola Rentals and Outstation," the company said. Ola currently operates in 250 Indian cities. The company has also partnered with online doctor consultation App, Mfine, to provide free medical help for driver-partners and their family members."The outbreak of COVID-19 poses a risk of impacting the health and livelihoods of millions across the country including that of our driver-partners and their families. But I am not new to Ola. I have taken many Ola rides during vacations in India where Ola has become the standard means of transport and is more popular than Uber. My parents, who weren't the most app-savvy till about a few years ago, have switched to Ola instead of taking their Hyundai out and so has a large part of the smartphone-savvy Indian population. However, back in London, it's always been Uber or Kapten for me. But I decided to give Ola a try on Monday evening and here's how I think it's different from its peers.Spriha Srivastava/Business Insider I took a short journey, and used the £5 ($6.46) introductory voucher from Ola. The app is pretty straightforward and easy to use. It gives you the option to add a few stops, and a range of cars to choose from. These are categorized as "Comfort," "Comfort XL" and Exec. Upon selecting your choice of car, a waiting time is shown and you are then connected to Ola drivers in your area.I selected a Comfort Ola, with a waiting time of 5 minutes. Now, here's where Ola is different from all the other ride-hailing services I have taken. Once you confirm your ride, the app sends you a start code, which is written on the left hand corner of the app. When you sit in the car, the driver asks for this code in order to start the journey. Without this code, a journey cannot be activated. Spriha Srivastava/Business InsiderI sat in my ride and was welcomed by the driver as his "first Ola customer." The driver, David, whose name we changed because of privacy concerns, said he worked for all the ride-hailing apps in London. This includes a long list of Uber, Bolt, Kapten, ViaVan and now Ola. Upon asking him which one he likes the best, he said Bolt because they cut the lowest commission from drivers. "Ola is currently offering zero commissions till March 20. I am not sure what happens after that," he said. David, however, wasn't very pleased with the launch of another ride-hailing app."It's the same customers but more companies. As drivers, we don't have loyalty toward any of them. It will be so easy if there was a single service for both drivers and riders," he said. While on the ride, I began playing around with the app and realized another feature that was very different from Ola's peers - the safety icon. It is conveniently placed on the right-hand side, at the top of the app. Upon clicking it, you get an alarming red message that asks you to swipe in the event of an emergency and promises the safety team will be in contact immediately. I took a ride in SoftBank-backed Ola cabs on its launch day in London and saw first-hand how it's different than Uber

New Delhi, Dec 17 () Cab hailing platform Ola on Tuesday said over 10,000 drivers in London have signed up ahead of the launch of its services in the city.
In November, Ola had announced that it was entering the London market. The development came just days after rival, Uber was stripped of its London license.
"...in just three weeks, over 10,000 PHV drivers in London have registered to drive on the platform," Ola said in a statement.
It added that it will not charge commission from drivers for the first two months after the launch, allowing them to retain 100 per cent of their earnings from the platform.
"Going forward, Ola will continue to offer the best revenue share for drivers, allowing them to keep more of their earnings, in line with the company's unique driver-centric approach," it said.
The company said drivers in London have signed up both online and offline to drive with Ola, completing the required checks to drive on the platform.
Drivers' documents have been verified and mandatory training modules, created by Ola, will help ensure that drivers are ready to use the platform when it launches in the coming weeks, it added.
"Every interaction with drivers in the city has presented us with an opportunity to create a platform that best serves their needs, as well as those of consumers. We are also very excited that a large number of these registrations have occurred through referrals and word of mouth amongst drivers," Ola Head of International Simon Smith said.
In November, the transport regulator had stripped Uber of its licence following several breaches that placed passengers and their safety at risk. The US-based company has appealed against the decision.
Ola - which also operates in India, Australia and New Zealand - has expanded rapidly across the UK since its launch last year, operating in 27 local authorities.
Cities including Birmingham, Coventry and Warwick have seen more than double-digit growth in rides in the last quarter, the company said, adding that till date, Ola has provided around three million rides with over 11,000 drivers operating on the platform outside London.
All drivers on the Ola platform are private hire vehicles (PHV) license holders, authorised to drive and extend their services to consumers by Transport for London (TfL).
This includes mandatory verification of documents, an 'enhanced' criminal records check, Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) training and medical examination amongst other TfL requirements.
Drivers will also have to go through a mandatory training module from Ola that familiarises them with customer service, app and platform usage, safety features, as well as various avenues of support available to them from the company, Ola said. SR BAL

Indian cab app Ola plans to take on Uber in London in 2020, and they happen to share the same big investor

New Delhi, Mar 27 () Ride-hailing major Ola on Friday launched a fund to support auto-rickshaw, cab, Kaali-Peeli and taxi drivers across India amid the ongoing 21-day lockdown. Besides, Ola co-founder Bhavish Aggarwal will forgo salary for one year that will go towards the fund. Launched under Ola Foundation, the 'Drive the Driver Fund' will support the drivers through contributions from the Ola group, investors and via a crowdfunding platform for citizens and other institutions, a statement said. "The proceeds of the fund will help towards the welfare and upliftment of drivers and their families who have been affected by the restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic," it added. Ola Group and employees are contributing an initial capital of Rs 20 crore to the fund and through the crowdfunding campaign, the intent is to raise up to Rs 50 crore. "The mobility industry has been brought to a grinding standstill during these stressed times, and the driver community has been finding it hard to pay for their family expenses without a source of income," the statement said. Ola's initiative aims to bring together multiple stakeholders in the ecosystem such as customers, investors and partner organisations to participate in supporting millions of drivers and their families across India, it added. This initiative will focus on key areas such as emergency support and essential supplies. In due course, Ola Foundation will also take up initiatives to support drivers in areas such as aid for children's education, among others. "Millions of drivers and their families have been affected, and even a humble contribution can have a lasting impact on their wellbeing. We invite all the stakeholders of the mobility industry to join us in every way you can, and support the people who move us in this difficult phase," an Ola spokesperson said. Ola has undertaken a number of measures, including launching a special COVID-19 insurance cover exclusive for their driver partners and their spouses. COVID-19: Ola launches fund to help drivers, CEO to forego a year salary

Cab aggregators like <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> and <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> have become an essential part of our lives for just the sheer amount of convenience they provide. Except for the surge-pricing which is a mild inconvenience for us, our lives have become much simpler with these on-demand cars. 
 Every state government has been dealing with the continuous strikes by the kali- peeli taxi unions and auto rickshaw <keyword id="44435" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="drivers">drivers</keyword>. <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword> government had released the draft for Maharashtra City Taxi Rules, 2016, to regulate app-based operators but these rules are detrimental to the ecosystem itself.

According to the guidelines, an application for grant or renewal of a license for a taxi will cost INR 1,00,000 and on top of that the license itself will cost INR 25,000 for cars up to engine capacity of 1,400 CC and for higher capacity engines typically sedans, the license will cost INR 2,61,000! Between Ola and Uber there are about 20,000-40,000 cars plying in the state, and about half of them are sedans according to Ola. 
 
Now, as taxi-aggregators are just a platform, these costs, if implemented will be transferred to drivers and then, ultimately consumers. <keyword id="824043" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Business-Insider">Business Insider</keyword> caught up with two Ola drivers to find out how this will affect their already dwindling livelihoods. 
 <keyword id="3836339" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="jia-ul-haq">Jia-Ul-Haq</keyword>, a car operator said- ‘While Ola has given us a lot of employment, our salaries have been decreasing, year-on-year. The new guidelines will leave us with nothing and close to the brink of poverty. We are already paying for auto loans, car insurance and this will make sure that we don’t even get the INR 20,000, which we earn right now.’ 
 <keyword id="1194067" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mohammed-Nazim">Mohammed Nazim</keyword> who works with four Ola drivers said,’ Where is the development in this? It is all about the inconvenience. The cost will be ultimately transferred to the customers otherwise these charges will put us further into debt.’ 
 
Pranay Jivrajka, COO, Ola talked to us to talk about an alternative scheme which is very inclusive in nature and enables and gives an opportunity for aggregators to bring all forms of mobility on the platform. This also allows the traditional cabs to join. 

	 
	He said ‘If a driver has to buy a vehicle, he saves up INR 40-70,000 right now to get the car on road, but permit costs are projected to get as high as INR 3.5 lakh. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/A-survey-reveals-60-of-employed-Indians-aspire-to-be-entrepreneurs/articleshow/55152360.cms">It will be quite difficult for a driver to turn into an entrepreneur.</a> No one gives loans on permits fees. This will drastically impact the growth of supply and therefore growth of industry.’

 Sarvodaya Driver Association of Delhi, a Delhi-based association, has called for an indefinite strike against <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> and <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword>, enraged over decline in earnings and perks of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ola+and+uber+drivers&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">drivers</a>. 
 
Claiming that they only get Rs 6/km from every ride, the strikers are demanding that these companies pay them the government sanctioned fare. 
 
"They reeled us in by promising earnings of more than 1 lakh per month and now because of falling fares, we do not even have the money to feed our families properly. We are demanding that we receive the fare sanctioned by the government which is Rs 21/km. First, they induced us to buy cars under their schemes now they are adding so many new cars that it has become difficult for us to pay off our monthly installments," a senior member of the association, Kamal Rathore, told ET. 
 
The agitated drivers are demanding better perks, relaxed hours and accident insurance. 
 
"Ride-sharing has to be stopped. Out of 10 trips we get in a day, eight of them are of sharing. This drops our already weak earning to Rs 3/km. The companies can give as much discount as they want to the customers but they should not make us suffer for it," Rathore told ET.

We have built a robust mobility platform for London, which is fully compliant with TfL’s (Transport for London) high standards,” Simon Smith, head of international, Ola said. The TfL had recently revoked Uber’s licence in London, after drivers were held using fake identity cards. The authorities had found that 14,000 trips were taking with fake ID cards. Hoping to stay ahead of a situation, Ola has said that it will have an “industry-first driver facial recognition technology for continuous authentication” along with “storing digital copies of various documents including vehicle insurance certificate, MOT (Ministry of Transport) certificate, and driver’s licence, to ensure that they are always up to date” Ola had launched operations in the UK in 2018, after foraying into New Zealand and Australia.

New Delhi, Jan 24 () Ride hailing platform Ola found itself in the midst of a social media storm on Friday over an emotionally charged political conversation between a passenger and the driver.
A passenger took to Twitter to detail out his conversation with the driver and asked Ola to ensure that "drivers would focus on driving than overhearing conversations and tagging people anti-nationals during their driving duties". 
Ola responded to the series of tweets saying it has reported the driver-partner for corrective action.
Following this, #BoycottOla started trending as many Twitter users supported the driver's right to hold his own opinion. Well over 4,700 tweets with #BoycottOla were shared on Twitter.
Thereafter, Ola sent out another tweet saying: "We are respectful of all personal views and like India's democratic values, encourage healthy exchange of thoughts".
"None of the parties involved in this case have been penalised from using the platform and we urge everyone to respect difference of opinion at all times," it added. SR CS SR MR
