Think Initial Public Offers (IPOs) are a sure-shot, quickfire method to make a quick buck? If so, then investing in some of India's biggest IPOs to date would have created multiple millionaires. However, if the data is to be believed, 18 out of India's top 30 IPOs by way of size have failed to deliver on the returns front. Recent data from Capitalmind PMS suggests that of all the mega IPOs India has seen in the past 2 decades, only 12 IPOs i.e. stocks of 12 companies have delivered more returns that what you would have received, had you bought and held your investments in Nifty500(which invests in biggest 500 companies by market size). Infact, Paytm (54%), <keyword id="20024191" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Power" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reliance Power" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reliance Power">Reliance Power</keyword> (81%), General Insurance Corporation (2%) actually generated negative total returns to date. The only outliers in the list of top 10 IPOs were Zomato (listed in July 2021) and Coal India (listed in April, 2010), which managed to generate excess returns i.e. more than what was generated by Nifty500. While Zomato's total return to date, which is considered a comprehensive gauge of a stock's profitability, stands at 265%, Coal India total returns are a massive 443%. In these cases, had you simply bought and held the Nifty500 index for a similar duration, your returns would've been 73%, and 435% respectively. Also, 5 of the biggest IPOs India has ever seen (Bajaj Housing Finance, Bharti Hexacom, Brainbees, Ola Electric) have come in the last 2 years. In some cases, having stayed put in your index investments would have yielded you far better returns. Consider this, FSN E-Commerce, Nykaa's parent company, listed on the exchanges on November 2021. Its total returns till date have been 2%, while had you invested in Nifty500 index, your returns would've been 53%. Similarly, the total returns to date on Bandhan Bank's stock, which listed in March 2018, was a negative 43%. But, the index has delivered a whopping 163% returns during the same time. Not really </h2>It is impossible to overlook the sheer number of public offerings seen in the Indian markets over the past 2 years. Around 600 share sale offers have already hit the market since 2023. Out of these, 335 have come in this year, as of October 2024. While over Rs 50,000 crores have been raised by these share sales so far since 2023, only 22% of these funds raises have come from companies who are hitting the market for the first time i.e. bringing out their IPOs. The rest have come from already listed companies seeking to raise more funds. The biggest IPO that India has seen to date, that of <keyword id="19906087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Hyundai" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword> Motor India, closes for subscription today. With an offer size of Rs 27,870.16 crore, it is 35% bigger than the previous biggest IPO in the country(LIC in May 2022). As of 12:30 pm today, Hyundai's offer had been 87% subscribed, with significant interest from QIBs and employees. At 0.43x, participation of retail investors remained largely subdued. Notably, an IPO is considered cancelled and withdrawn, if it fails to meet the 90% subscription threshold.

Do large IPOs guarantee large returns? Data suggests that 18 of India's biggest 30 IPOs did not generate solid returns

This is a premium of 77.87%. The shares were trading at ₹2,203 at 12:39 p.m., on November 10, representing a premium of nearly 96% over the issue price of ₹1,125. The company’s market cap also breached the ₹100,000 crore mark within a few hours of its stock exchange debut. Nykaa — which is a brand of the parent company FSN E-Commerce Venture Limited — was supposed to make its stock exchange debut on November 11, but the listing date was postponed by a day. The company had launched its initial public offering (IPO) on<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/nykaa-ipo-subscribed-1-56-times-on-first-day-today-is-the-second-day-to-subscribe/articleshow/87339302.cms"> October 28</a> and it closed on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/nykaa-ipo-today-is-the-last-day-to-subscribe-grey-market-premium-at-700/articleshow/87370518.cms">November 1</a>. The company has raised ₹5,352 crore with this public issue. Nearly ₹630 crore will be raised through fresh issue of shares. The price band was set at ₹1,085 to ₹1,125, and the lot size was 12 shares. At a price of ₹1,125, one lot cost up to ₹13,500. Nykaa’s issue was subscribed over 82 times at the end of the bidding process on November 1. The IPO received bids for 216 crore shares against 2.64 crore shares that were offered. A day before its IPO, on October 27, Nykaa raised ₹2,395.8 crore from 174 anchor investors. The Government of Singapore, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Fidelity Investment Fund, JP Morgan Investment Trust, T Rowe Price and others participated in the round. Nykaa intends to use this capital for acquisition of customers as well as new businesses. Nykaa starts trading at ₹2,001, a premium of 77.87%

The fashion and beauty ecommerce platform will launch its three-day-long IPO this Thursday (October 28), at a price band of ₹1,085-₹1,125 per share. The company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/nykaa-may-launch-its-ipo-next-week-to-raise-a-little-over-5000-crore/articleshow/87198148.cms">reportedly plans to raise </a>₹5,200 crore with this public issue. The nine-year-old startup — launched by Falguni Nayar in 2012 — has elaborate plans on how to use these proceeds. But the most intriguing of all is Nykaa’s aim to expand its offline retail stores, even though they are not a major part of its business. Anchit Nayar, chief executive officer (CEO) of Nykaa’s beauty ecommerce business, highlighted that retail stores currently contribute around 5% gross merchandise value (GMV) of Nykaa’s beauty business. Pre-COVID the number had spiked up to 7-10%. The company currently has 80 stores across 40 cities. “So even though the large majority of our business comes from our online app, we have a very large network of physical stores as well... Also it [retail stores] has allowed us to gain a reputation and also a large [set of] customers interact with the brand Nykaa in a physical way, Nayar said, adding that the omnichannel approach is an important one for them especially in the beauty space. According to Nykaa’s <a href="https://investmentbank.kotak.com/downloads/fsn-e%E2%80%93commerce-ventures-limited-RHP.pdf">red herring prospectus </a>(RHP), the company intends to spend ₹42 crore of the money raised from public issues in setting up retail stores. Overall, the company will spend ₹54 crore for this expense. Nykaa seems to be doing pretty well without retail store intervention Nykaa’s operating revenue grew by ₹670 crore in the financial year 2021, even though the footfall in its retail stores declined by 55-60% in the same time frame. After accessing Nykaa’s financial performance in the April to June quarter of 2021, the company decided to have a “more aggressive expansion on physical store as well as warehousing capacity,” Arvind Agarwal, group chief financial officer (CFO) of the beauty and ecommerce business said. The company will spend another ₹42 crore from its proceeds in setting up warehouses, which act as fulfilment centres for Nykaa’s ecommerce businesses. For the beauty business specifically, Nykaa keeps the inventory of brands in these warehouses and gets them delivered to the customer directly. In total, Nykaa has planned an investment of ₹92 crore for this expense. Nykaa plans to go ‘aggressive’ with its retail store network, a vertical that contributes less than 10% to its revenue

Millions of retail investors wanted a part of the boom in Asia’s best performing stock market, and a lot of IPOs benefited from the frenzy. That kind of unbridled enthusiasm is unlikely in 2022, according to Ajay Saraf, head of investment banking and institutional equities at ICICI Securities in an interview to Business Insider. Saraf is not alone. Srinivas Rao Ravuri, chief investment officer at PGIM India Mutual Fund also <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/markets/daily-voice-2022-would-be-a-challenging-year-for-investors-and-companies-planning-ipos-says-srinivas-rao-ravuri-of-pgim-india-mf-7856261.html">reportedly</a> believes that 2022 would be a challenging year for investors and companies planning IPOs. But that’s not entirely a bad thing. If the cautious mood makes good companies, who need to raise money, tone down the pricing it may leave more profit on the table for small investors. and great as 2021,” said Saraf. If the market mood is uncertain, then the companies planning IPOs are likely to be less confident in seeking high valuations. Startups like <keyword id="143842" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobikwik" source="Orion">Mobikwik</keyword> are already waiting patiently before they launch the IPO to get the best price. Founder Upasana Taku told Business Insider that she is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/mobikwik-founder-says-they-are-not-selling-any-shares-in-the-ipo/articleshow/88392998.cms">waiting for the market conditions to improve</a> even though she has the SEBI approval to launch the IPO. Legendary investor Warren Buffet has said in the past that he has never invested in an IPO. “The idea of saying the best place in the world where I can put money is something where all the selling, and their commissions are higher, the animal spirits are rising, that’s going to be better than a thousand other things I can where there is no similar selling enthusiasm, and the desire to get the deal done and earn some commissions. However, Nykaa's RHP doesn't reveal the price band. The company has not revealed the amount it intends to raise in its red herring prospectus, which is the preliminary paperwork for public issue. The company soon wants to start its operations in the Middle East market as well as the United Kingdom (UK). Falguni Nayar, the founder and chief executive of Nykaa, highlighted that the demand for Indian cosmetics in the Middle East market is quite high. Therefore, the company would like to take its house of brands — which includes Katrina Kaif’s Kay Beauty, Peppa Bella, 20Dresses, Dot &amp; Key and other brands that Nykaa has set up or acquired — in this market. Meanwhile, the UK market will serve as the first step towards Nykaa’s expansion in the European market. “At the moment we are very keen to go into the Middle East, where we think there's a lot of opportunity for Indian consumption. In the Middle East we want to take many of our Indian brands. I will grant you only exposure to the markets… including Kay Beauty which will be able to do very well in the Middle Easter market,” Nayyar said. Europe, is another area of opportunity that Nykaa is going to start with and then maybe consider expansion, she added. According to its red herring prospectus (RHP), Nykaa had registered a subsidiary in the UK under the name Nykaa International UK Limited in 2020. Soon-to-be listed Nykaa plans to expand to Middle East and the UK

<ul><li>On Monday, Gunjan Patidar, Zomato’s co-founder and chief technology officer tendered his resignation.</li><li><keyword id="7349800" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bharatpe" source="Orion">BharatPe</keyword>’s CEO Suhail Sameer has quit the top job to become its strategic advisor.</li><li>There has been a lot of churn in new-age companies like Nykaa, and also big techs like Meta India, WhatsApp Pay, Amazon India and more.</li></ul>New age companies in India have been hit by a flurry of exits by top executives, leaving them scurrying for replacements. This comes at a time when startups have been battling funding winter and elevated inflation, in a rising interest rate regime. BharatPe, a fintech is amongst those with multiple high profile exits, including its co-founder and former managing director Ashneer Grover, along with his wife Madhuri Jain Grover – who not only had to leave the company, but were also sued by BharatPe in December 2022 for ₹88.6 crore. The company alleged that both husband and wife engaged in misappropriation of funds including creating fake bills, enlisting fictitious vendors and so on. Adding to BharatPe’s woes is the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/bharatpe-ceo-suhail-sameer-to-step-down-five-months-after-taking-over/articleshow/96703750.cms">departure</a> of its CEO Suhail Sameer on January 3. Sameer took over as the company’s CEO in August 2021, a year after being appointed as the company’s president. He will now serve as a strategic advisor starting January 7, 2023. Before Sameer, BharatPe witnessed the departure of four other high level executives last November. This includes Nehul Malhotra, head of PostPe which is BharatPe’s ‘Buy Now Pay Later’ arm. The others were the CTO Vijay Aggarwal; Rajat Jain, the chief product officer; and Geetanshu Singla, VP of technology. They moved on to pursue their own entrepreneurial passions, the company had then said in a statement. Zomato rocked by multiple top level exits, too Sameer’s resignation comes hours after Gunjan Patidar, Zomato’s co-founder and chief technology officer, tendered his resignation. Patidar was one of the first few employees of Zomato who built the core tech systems of the company. “Over the last ten plus years, he (Patidar) also nurtured a stellar tech leadership team that is capable of taking on the mantle of leading the tech function going forward. His contribution to building Zomato has been invaluable,” said the company. Patidar’s exit is the third high-level exit at the food delivery giant in two months. In November last year, another one of Zomato’s co-founders Mohit Gupta tendered his resignation. Its head of new initiatives Rahul Ganjoo; and Siddharth Jhawar, vice-president of global growth also quit in the same month. The list goes on as in September 2022, Zomato’s deputy CFO Nitin Savara also tendered his resignation. The company has been bleeding money and it reported a consolidated loss of ₹251 crore in Q2 FY23. New age companies’ top heads move in and out of big tech companies There is a lot of churn among top executives of new-age tech companies as well as big techs. Online beauty retailer Nykaa’s CFO Arvind Agarwal, who had been with the company through its IPO, quit and joined fintech major PayU as its India CFO, this November. On the other hand, new-age companies have also been able to attract executives from major companies into their fold as well. Case in point is Sugar Cosmetics who brought in Amit Aggarwal, Marico’s head of finance of its India business, as its CFO. Adding to it, Amazon India’s director of grocery, food and health Sameer Khetarpal resigned and moved to Jubilant FoodWorks as CEO, a franchisee that runs Domino’s Pizza, Dunkin Donuts outlets in India. Meta India country head Ajit Mohan tendered his resignation in November 2022, to join rival Snap as the President of Asia Pacific. Following this, WhatsApp India’s head Abhijit Bose and Meta India’s public policy head Rajiv Aggarwal also resigned. The latter joined Samsung India. WhatsApp Pay’s director and head Manesh Mahatme also left his position in September to join Amazon India as director, product and engineering. Last but not the least, another shocking exit was of Parag Agarwal, former CEO of Twitter who was fired by Elon Musk in October, a year after he was appointed for the position. The shuffle in net worth rankings came only a few months after these founders took their companies public. While Nykaa was able to double investors’ money on its first day of listing, Paytm has been struggling to even reach its issue price of ₹2150. Nykaa was listed at a price of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/nykaa-starts-trading-at-2001-a-premium-of-77-87/articleshow/87618803.cms"> ₹2,001 </a>compared to the issue price of ₹1,125. The company currently sits at a market capitalisation of ₹70,690 crore ($9.2 billion), which is lower than Nykaa’s listing price but still higher than the issue price of $7.4 billion. Paytm, on the other hand, is listed at a discount of 9% on the listing day, and has been on a decline ever since. It’s worth noting that Paytm was the highest valued startup — valued at $16 billion — in India till 2021 before Byju’s took over. Nearly 75% of its valuation has been eroded ever since Paytm made its entry into the public market.
