They range from Constellation Brands, the maker of Modelo, which expects fewer people to go out drinking around the election, to airlines like United and Delta, which often see passenger counts dip around Election Day.Some companies already have seen political news distract customers. When a gunman died after injuring Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania in July, for instance, Amazon saw some people put off making purchases on the website, CFO Brian Olsavsky said in August."A lot of times, purchases will defer and people will come back and buy what they were going to buy," Olsavsky said on a call with reporters. "And other times — that won't happen."Other companies have invoked the election but not provided details about the dynamics leading consumers to pull back. Anna Manz, CFO of Nestlé, said on the company's earnings call last week that it's facing a slowdown in the US and "concerns around the elections are playing out." Nestlé did not immediately respond to a request for more details from Business Insider.Research suggests that some consumers — though not all — do indeed reduce purchases around the event.Some shoppers are holding off on making purchases until after November 5, according to a September survey of 400 Kroger shoppers by 84.51, the grocer's marketing subsidiary. Eighteen percent of those surveyed said they were holding off on buying big-ticket items such as electronics or appliances. Slightly smaller percentages said they were holding off on an investment decision or buying a car.Consumers might be holding off on big purchases because they need loans and hope that interest rates will fall more in the months after the election, said Alex Trott, director of insights at 84.51. But some might not actually care as much about the election as the seasonal promotions that tend to follow in November and December, she added. "We are also bumping up against a holiday season where there are always sales," Trott said.People under 34 were also more likely than older consumers to put off a major financial commitment until after the election, 84.51 found.Older consumers, such as Baby Boomers and members of Gen X, "can make some of these bigger decisions," said Trott. "Younger people don't have that spending power. Election Day stress is affecting some companies' sales

<keyword id="42747" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tata-motors" source="Orion">Tata Motors</keyword> on Friday reported 1.73 per cent decline in overall global sales at 74,172 units in November 2023 as compared to 75,478 units in the same month last year. Total domestic sales were at 72,647 units last month as compared to 73,467 units in November 2022, down 1 per cent, <keyword id="8555" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata" source="Orion">Tata</keyword> Motors said in a regulatory filing. Overall sales of passenger vehicles (PV), including electric vehicles (EV) were at 46,143 units as against 46,425 units in the year-ago month, down 1 per cent, it added. In the domestic market, PV sales, including EVs were marginally higher at 46,068 units last month as compared to 46,037 units in November 2022. Sales of passenger EVs, including in the domestic market, stood at 4,761 units as against 4,451 units in the year-ago month, up 7 per cent, the company said. Tata Motors said its total commercial vehicles (CV) sales in November 2023 were at 28,029 units as compared to 29,053 units in the same month last year, down 4 per cent. Domestic CV sales were lower by 3 per cent at 26,579 units as compared to 27,430 units in the year-ago month, it added. The PIL has highlighted the need for a more immediate judicial intervention to prevent further exploitation in upcoming events. Utility vehicle dispatches stood at 39,981 units last month, an increase of 32 per cent over 30,238 units in the year-ago period, <keyword id="45224" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mahindra" source="Orion">Mahindra</keyword> &amp; Mahindra (M&amp;M) said in a statement. Exports, however, declined 42 per cent last month to 1,816 units as compared to 3,122 units in November 2022. "We continue our growth trend, backed by strong demand for our SUV portfolio...While we saw a healthy festive season, we faced supply challenges on select parts during the month. We are keeping a close watch and taking appropriate steps to mitigate the challenges," M&amp;M President Automotive Division Veejay Nakra said. M&amp;M said its tractor wholesales stood at 32,074 units in November as compared to 30,528 units in the year-ago period. Exports, however, declined to 1,005 units last month from 1,348 units in November 2022. "The festive season saw high demand pull in the domestic market, supported by Kharif harvest realisations, with retails being strong during Dhanteras and Diwali," M&amp;M President-Farm Equipment Sector Hemant Sikka said. Terms of trade continue to be favourable for farmers, while rural spending by the government and progress in rabi sowing are the factors to watch out for, he added. The recent collaboration with Charge Zone reasserts the focus of the company on boosting EV infrastructure and it has so far established a network of more than 12,000 chargers across the country, it added.

The Pune-based company had sold a total of 3,06,719 vehicles in November 2022, according to a statement. Total domestic sales (two-wheelers and <keyword id="6390018" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="commercial-vehicles" source="Orion">commercial vehicles</keyword>) in the previous month grew by a whopping 69 per cent to 2,57,744 units as against 1,52,883 69 units in November 2022. At the same time, <keyword id="35090" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exports" source="Orion">exports</keyword> during the month under review declined 6 per cent to 1,45,259 from 1,53,836 vehicles shipped out to overseas markets in the same month of last year, as per the statement. Two-wheelers' domestic sales were at 2,18,597 units, registering a growth of 77 per cent over 1,23,657 units sold in November 2022, while exports fell 6 per cent year-on-year to 1,30,451 units in the previous month, it said. The total two-wheeler sales during November 2023 were recorded at 3,49,048 units, growing 33 per cent over the same month last year. The total commercial vehicles sales were 53,955 units in November 2023, as per the statement.

The company had sold 11,765 units in November 2022, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) said in a statement. Domestic sales last month were at 16,924 units in the domestic market, while exports stood at 894 units, it added. The company had undertaken a week-long maintenance shutdown from November 11-19, 2023 for upkeep of machinery and equipment to sustain operational efficiencies, maintain quality and safety, the statement said. "We recorded a strong <keyword id="36208" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="festive-season" source="Orion">festive season</keyword> with healthy <keyword id="81925" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bookings" source="Orion">bookings</keyword>, and we are extremely thrilled to see the market responding very positively to our entire product range," TKM Vice President of Sales and Strategic Marketing Atul Sood said. TKM said its cumulative sales for calendar year 2023 (January-November) stood at 2,10,497 units, up 40 per cent over the same period in 2022, when the sales were 1,49,995 units.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Swing state asking rents have shot up almost 24% in the last four years, a Redfin report found.</li><li>Rent affordability has improved slightly with income gains, but it remains a key issue for swing state renters.</li></ul>Swing states have seen a huge rise in rent prices since the 2020 election — a fact that will likely make housing affordability a key issue in this year's presidential race, Redfin said. The report says median asking rents in swing states have shot up almost 24% since 2020, with especially big increases in key states like Michigan.As rent prices have climbed, housing affordability remains stretched. Typical swing state renter households earn $50,267 a year, but to be able to afford a median-priced apartment that costs no more than 30% of that income, they would need to make $60,633, the report says.That's a $10,365 difference, meaning renters in swing states earn 17% less than they need to afford the typical apartment.That deficit actually marks a slight improvement compared to the last election, when swing state renters faced a 21% difference in income and affordable rent. The slightly improved affordability stems from gains in incomes, which have risen faster than rent prices.Yet, the income and rent discrepancy remains sizeable, the study says. Given that the difference between income and median rent peaked at 31.4% in 2021 following the last election, and given that younger renters have since entered the market for the first time, housing affordability is likely to be an issue at the top of mind for many voters in the states likely to decide the election. "While the economy has been improving on paper, that's not what it feels like for a lot of US families. Many renters—especially young people—still feel the rent is too damn high," Redfin chief economist Daryl Fairweather said.The study looked at voters in Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina — states where the race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris is particularly close.In Arizona, rental affordability has improved the most with an almost 10% increase in affordability, while in Michigan, affordability has fallen almost 5%.The study says asking rents in Michigan have jumped over 12% in just the last year as the Midwest faces high demand and less active home building than other regions.Pennsylvania, meanwhile, faces a nearly 30% difference between median renter income and asking rent. Pennsylvania is a critical state, with Harris and Trump nearly tied in the latest polls."America's swing state voters will decide the outcome of the next presidential election based on the candidates' plans for tackling key issues including the housing affordability crisis," Fairweather said.The situation is also tough for prospective buyers in these states. In July, Redfin found the median monthly housing payment in swing states has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/housing-costs-mortgage-rates-prices-insurance-swing-states-election-november-2024-7">nearly doubled in the last four years</a>, rising by 92% to reach a record high of $2,161.That rise means people earning the median swing-state income are able to afford just one-third of homes for sale, down from roughly two-thirds in 2020.
