Benchmark indices <keyword id="6354813" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nifty" source="Orion">Nifty</keyword> and Sensex recovered from their losses last week to close in greens on Monday. While Sensex inched up over 690 points to close at 79,476.63 points, Nifty closed the day over the 24k mark, at 24,213.30, up by 217 points. During the day, Sensex had soared 740.89 points, or 0.94%, to touch 79,523.13 points. From the 30-share Sensex pack, JSW Steel surged nearly 5% while Tata Steel jumped nearly 4%. Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank, HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and UltraTech Cement were also among the big gainers. On the other hand, Tech Mahindra, Lupin, Britannia, and Infosys were among the major laggards on Sensex. On Nifty, where 39 stocks advanced during the day and the remaining 11 saw declines, Tata Steel, Hindalco, and JSW Steel were among the top gainers. Adani Ports, ITC, Bharti Airtel, and Asian Paints were among the leading laggards. In Asian markets, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong settled in the positive territory, while Seoul ended lower. Yesterday, the BSE benchmark tumbled 941.88 points, or 1.18%, to settle at 78,782.24, the lowest closing level since August 6. The Nifty had also tanked 309 points, or 1.27%, to close at 23,995.35. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) continued with their hefty exodus, offloading equities worth Rs 4,329.79 crore today, according to exchange data. So far in November, DIIs (domestic institutional investors) have put in Rs 2,558.75 crore in Indian markets. Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.60% to $75.53 a barrel today. <h2>Banks, metals lead the party</h2> Aditya Gaggar, Director of Progressive Shares, explains that while bears dominated the first half of trading session by dragging the index lower; it was the banking counters that led to a sharp up move and pushed the index higher from its previous session's low. The Metal stocks also joined the party and pushed the index further higher to end the session at 24,213.30 with gains of 217.95 points. Mid and smallcaps also advanced but underperformed the frontline index", he added. Today's rally was largely led by banking scrips. The BSE Bankex jumped a staggering 1,218.58 points during the day. On NSE, both banks and financial services indices inched up by 1.94% and 1.98% respectively during the day. While PSU bank counters were up by 1.84%, private banks surged ahead with a 1.94% growth during the day. Metals were amidst the highest gainers, rising 2.84% during the day. All broad market indices closed the day in green, except for India VIX, which tumbled 4.08%.

Sensex, and Nifty rebound to greens, metals and banks lead the rally on bourses today

As of 9:30 am, Nifty was down by 0.05% trading at 24,420.30 points, while Sensex was down by 0.15% and was trading at 80,254.37 points as of 9:30 am. All broad market indices opened the day in the green, except for Nifty 50, 100, 200, 500, and midcap and smallcap 50 opened in red. India VIX was up by 1.17%. Amidst sectoral indices, Bank, auto, metal, financial services, PSU, and <keyword id="61519" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Private-banks" source="Orion">private banks</keyword> opened the day in the red. Continuing its momentum from yesterday, <keyword id="6912" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti" source="Orion">Maruti</keyword> opened the day in green and was up by 1.66%. Grasim, Divis Labs, Eicher Motors, and Britannia were the top gainers in early trade this morning. On the other hand, Mahindra and Mahindra, JSW Steel, Axis Bank, Dr. Reddy, and Kotak Bank were among the leading laggards. As Mr. Aditya Gaggar, Director of Progressive Shares, notes, "A strong rally in the auto counters helped the index end on trade at another record level of 24,433 yesterday. The index has breached its previous high convincingly by forming a big green candle and opening the door for further rallying towards the 24,520–24,600 zone. At the same time, 24,340 will be considered strong immediate support. BankNifty oscillates in a well-maintained range of 52,260–52,720; a breakout on either side is a must (mostly on the higher side, considering the strong uptrend). The auto segment ended its consolidation of over 2 weeks with a strong breakout indicating the resumption of its uptrend". "Post the strong breakout, follow-up buying was witnessed in the <keyword id="20421583" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FMCG-segment" source="keywords">FMCG segment</keyword> which boosted our confidence to remain bullish on the sector (ITC is on the verge of a major breakout). Sugar counters regained their momentum and some of them have already given a strong breakout (Andhra Sugar and Dalmia Sugar) and some are at the cusp of a major breakout (Balrampur Chini and Renuka Sugar). We continue to remain positive in the <keyword id="20350923" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pharma-space" source="keywords">pharma space</keyword>", he continued. Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research, Kotak Securities noted that among sectors, the auto index gained over 2% while intraday profit booking was witnessed in select IT, oil, and gas stocks. "Currently, 24,300/80,000 would act as a key support zone for trend-following traders. We believe, that as long as the market is trading above it, the bullish sentiment will likely continue. On the higher side, 24,500 -24,600/80,500-80,800 would be the immediate resistance zones for day traders", he said.

He further added that market participants are eagerly awaiting the second-quarter earnings report, which could provide clarity on future earnings potential. <h2>Global factors and FPI activity</h2>One of the key drivers behind the <keyword id="6357440" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-market" source="Orion">stock market</keyword> rally in recent weeks has been the US Federal Reserve’s decision to loosen its monetary policy, with a significant 50-basis-point cut in interest rates. On the Nifty index, he anticipated strong support around the 25,900-26,000 zone, with an upside target at 26,500. <h2>Technical insights</h2>Hrishikesh <keyword id="23343291" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="yedve" source="keywords">Yedve</keyword>, AVP Technical and Derivatives Research at Asit C. Mehta Investment Intermediates Ltd., shared his technical analysis of the <keyword id="20105832" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nifty-and-bank-nifty" source="keywords">Nifty and Bank Nifty</keyword> indices. He observed that while the Nifty started the day on a flat note and registered a new lifetime high, it eventually faced profit booking and closed marginally lower. "Technically, the index on a daily scale has formed a small red candle, but on the weekly scale, it has formed a big green candle," Yedve explained. He added that as long as Nifty holds above the 26,000 level, a "buy on dips" strategy should be followed, with an immediate short-term target of 26,500. On the Bank Nifty front, Yedve pointed out that the index started on a weak note and remained under pressure throughout the day, closing at 53,834. He highlighted the formation of a bearish Marubozo candle on the daily chart, which signals potential short-term weakness. However, on the weekly scale, Bank Nifty remains above the breakout point of a rounding bottom pattern, indicating strength. "In the short term, Bank Nifty may witness consolidation or profit taking, but any dip around 53,350-53,400 will offer fresh buying opportunities," Yedve advised. <h2>Market wrap-up and outlook</h2>Reflecting on the week’s performance, <keyword id="23343292" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amol-athawale" source="keywords">Amol Athawale</keyword>, VP-Technical Research at Kotak Securities, noted that the benchmark indices had maintained positive momentum, with the Nifty ending 1.5% higher and the Sensex gaining over 1,030 points. <keyword id="20102108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="metal" source="keywords">Metal</keyword> and auto stocks were the standout performers, with the Metal index rising by 7% and the Auto index by 4.5%. Athawale highlighted the importance of the Nifty and Sensex breaching key resistance levels of 26,000/85,000 last week, which has provided a boost to market sentiment. Technically, Athawale pointed to the formation of a bullish candle on the weekly charts and an uptrend continuation pattern on the daily and intraday charts, signalling a potential continuation of the rally. However, he cautioned that "buying on dips and selling on rallies would be the ideal strategy for short-term traders." He identified 26,100/85,300 as crucial support zones for the Nifty and Sensex, with resistance expected around 26,400-26,500/85,900-86,300. As for Bank Nifty, Athawale described the medium-term outlook as bullish but noted that overbought conditions could lead to range-bound activity in the near term. With the Congress and the Senate coming under Republican control and President Trump exercising power without bothering about another term in office, hugely transformational decisions are possible in the months following Trump's assumption of office. These decisions may turn out to be both good and bad" said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services. "His pro-business initiative of 'America First' can strengthen the American economy. But if he walks his talk and imposes a 60% tariff on Chinese imports and a 10 to 20% tariff on imports from other countries, that would trigger inflation and jeopardise the Fed's policy of containing inflation, necessitating a rethink of the Fed's present policy of rate cut. This has the potential to negatively impact global stock markets,” Vijayakumar added. In the sectoral indices, a mixed performance was seen on the National Stock Exchange, with Nifty Auto, Nifty Pharma, Nifty IT, and Nifty FMCG gaining, while Nifty Bank, Nifty Metal, and Nifty Private Bank declined. In the quarterly announcements today, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Trent, Rail Vikas Nigam, Linde India, Lupin, NHPC, and Aditya Birla Fashion &amp; Retail are some of the major companies set to announce their second-quarter financial performance. Nifty and Sensex continue downward trend, selling continues despite Trump's victory

The stock ended at Rs 1,175.35, lower by 5.19 per cent after tumbling 6.75 per cent to Rs 1,156 during the day on the <keyword id="19895774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BSE" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BSE">BSE</keyword>. On the <keyword id="20004725" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="NSE" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="NSE">NSE</keyword>, it slumped 5.08 per cent to settle at Rs 1,176.25. The stock emerged as the biggest laggard among the Sensex and <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> firms. The company's <keyword id="20097096" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-valuation" source="keywords">market valuation</keyword> diminished by Rs 19,816.9 crore to Rs 3,63,296.40 crore. After a sharp fall in intra-day trade, the 30-share BSE Sensex settled 109.08 points or 0.14 per cent lower at 80,039.80 and the <keyword id="19950205" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nse-nifty" source="keywords">NSE Nifty</keyword> dipped 7.40 points or 0.03 per cent to 24,406.10. Axis Bank on Wednesday reported a 5.66 per cent rise in consolidated net profit for the June quarter at Rs 6,436 crore, restricted by challenges on the asset quality front. On a standalone basis, the third biggest private sector lender reported a 4 per cent rise in net profit at Rs 6,035 crore. The core net interest income grew 12 per cent to Rs 13,448 crore during the quarter on the back of the Net Interest Margin (<keyword id="19936365" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nim" source="keywords">NIM</keyword>) staying stable at 4.05 per cent and 14 per cent growth in advances. The other income grew 14 per cent to Rs 5,783 crore during the quarter. The bank witnessed a jump in gross slippages to Rs 4,793 crore during the quarter as against Rs 3,471 crore in the March quarter and Rs 3,990 crore in the year-ago period. Analysts at domestic brokerage Stoxbox said the earnings are "muted" and the provisions are high.

Out of the 2,813 stocks traded during the day, 757 saw advances, while 1,978 declined, and another 78 remained unchanged. 121 stocks hit their 52-week high price, while 31 stocks also hit their 52-week low prices. 92 stocks hit their upper circuit, or the maximum permissible trading price during a singular session, while 104 stocks remained in the lower circuit. Amidst broad market indices, Nifty Next 50, small cap 100, small cap 50, small cap 250 and micro cap 250 plunged by over 1% each in day's trade, while India VIX rose by 1.89%. Amidst sectoral indices, bank, financial services, metal, private banks, oil and gas and PSU banks closed the day in red, shedding over 1% each, while consumer durables gained over 1%, along with healthcare and IT, which also notched up marginal gains. Says Rajesh Bhosale, Equity Technical Analyst, Angel One, "Today, prices steadily declined throughout the session, and the sell-off intensified in the afternoon with no signs of a rebound. Eventually, Nifty ended down by 0.83%, a tad below the 24,150 mark". "Recent sessions have seen prices struggling around the 20-day EMA (Exponential Moving Average), and it now appears likely that prices will test the 50-day EMA support in the 24,040 - 24,000 range and potentially dip below the recent low of 23,900. With the upcoming weekly expiry for both Nifty and Bank Nifty, increased <keyword id="19908008" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="volatility" source="keywords">volatility</keyword> is expected. Traders should avoid complacency, keep positions light, and prepare for potential market fluctuations ahead of the mid-week holiday. Conversely, the 24,350 - 24,500 range remains a critical hurdle only beyond which the momentum would favor back for the bulls. Traders are advised to monitor these levels closely and adjust their strategies accordingly", he continued. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities is of the view that the intraday texture of the market is weak but 50 day SMA (Simple Moving Average) or 24,000/78,800 would be the trend decider level for the day traders. Above 24,000/78,800, we could see one pullback rally till 24,250-24,300 / 79,500-79,700. On the flip side, below 24,000/78,800 selling pressure is likely to accelerate. Below the same, the market could slip up to 23,850-23,775 / 78,500-78,100. Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd highlights that the markets continued their downward trend today, losing nearly a percent as the correction phase persisted. Despite a flat start, the Nifty gradually declined, closing near the day's low at 24,140.70. "The pressure was primarily due to a drop in banking and financial heavyweights, while IT majors attempted to limit the losses. Broader indices also struggled, with declines ranging from 0.8% to 1.3%. Nifty is under pressure after failing to surpass the 20-day EMA resistance and appears poised to retest the 24,000 support zone. The decline in banking majors has disrupted the recovery, while other sectors are trading mixed. We recommend monitoring leveraged positions closely and waiting for clearer market signals", said Mishra.

Stock market closing: Nifty, Sensex close in red, Sensex dips over 650 points during the day

While Nifty closed at 24,205.35 points, down by 0.56%, Sensex dipped around 553 points to end Thursday at 79,389.06 points. Experts noted that India needs measures on both fiscal and monetary fronts to boost growth. 34 of Nifty50 stocks saw declines, while the remaining 16 saw advances. On Sensex, only 4 scrips ended their day in the green, while 26 others remained in red. "Happy Diwali and Shubh Samvat 2081. We are going into Samvat 2081 with a consensus that markets will be challenged and will mean revert, leading to an underpowered year coming up. Predictions are at best intelligent guesstimates, so we will refrain from that. What is clear is that some countercyclical measures are needed from India, both on the fiscal and monetary front, to tackle the issue of "not as sharp growth in aggregate demand," Ajay Bagga, Banking and Market Expert told ANI. He further added, "The festival season is key to the annual consumption numbers, and the combination of 35 lakh marriages and around Rs 4.5 lakh crores of private consumption expenditure is expected to provide some relief from a slowing growth trajectory.". Cipla (up by 9.5%), LT (up by 6.23%), ONGC (up by 2.04%), Dr. Reddy (up by 1.93%), and Mahindra and Mahindra (up by 1.61%) were among the day's top gainers. HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra, TCS, Asian Paints, and Infosys were the leading laggards on NSE. As for sectoral indices, IT declined by over 3% during the day, while media, pharma, and healthcare inched up by over 1% each. Smallcaps had a gala day on the bourses today, rising by over 1%. Mehta Investment Intermediates Ltd, said that “Nifty opened flat and traded within a narrow range, ending the day with a negative close at 24,205. Notably, the <keyword id="19908884" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="smallcap" source="keywords">Smallcap</keyword> 100 index outperformed the benchmark, gaining about 1.15%. Rajesh Bhosale, Equity Technical Analyst, Angel One, explained that as October concluded, it marked a challenging month for bulls, erasing gains accumulated over the past two months, with Nifty dropping more than 6%, one of the steepest monthly declines in recent times, which has impacted the monthly chart's structure. "Throughout the week, the 24,100–24,000 zone provided some support due to oversold conditions, but the index faced persistent resistance on attempted rebounds. Despite multiple efforts, prices couldn’t surpass the 24,500 level. A strong close above this range is needed before considering aggressive positions, as the market seems poised for a phase of high volatility, he continued. "The banking sector, which has shown relative strength but stalled at key levels, will be crucial in determining the market’s next move. Traders should keep a close eye on this sector for guidance. Notably, the week saw improved market breadth with several individual stocks posting notable gains. However, a selective approach remains essential in this volatile environment", continued Bhosale. The immediate focus is on the core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) data due later in the day to assess the Fed's policy stance ahead of the next rate decision on Nov 7. Since June 7, FPIs have invested a total of USD 3.7 billion in Indian equities, buoyed by reduced policy uncertainty. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) have also been active, purchasing USD 1.6 billion worth of shares in the same period," Varun Aggarwal MD, Profit Idea. "Gold and silver prices are declining due to the Federal Reserve's aggressive stance on maintaining higher interest rates, which increases US Treasury bond yields and limits precious metal gains. However, geopolitical tensions between Israel and Lebanon are supporting safe-haven demand," he added. Gold is trading between Rs 71,000 and Rs 71,800, awaiting a breakout to establish a new trend.

Sensex-Nifty hit all-time high as trading session closes in green

While Nifty closed at 24,286.50 points, up by 0.67%, Sensex closed at 79,986.80 points, having inched up by 0.69%. As for broad market indices, all of them, except India VIX closed the day in green. While VIX ended the day 3.18% down, Nifty next 50 gained 1.08%, and Nifty small cap 100 added 1.03%. Geojit financial service's share rallied 4.02% to end day at Rs 100.37, after it registered a sharp fall yesterday, following SEBIs orders on uniform charging, and not taking trading volume into play. The firm reported that during FY 23-24, approximately Rs.40 lakhs, which was the difference between the amount recovered from clients and the charges paid to Exchange, had been recorded as income for the year. However, this amount constitutes 0.067% of the total income and 0.22% of profit before tax for FY 23-24. <h2>Experts advise caution as Sensex hits 80,000</h2>According to Mr. Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares, "Indian bourses commenced the session on a strong note at a fresh high of 24,290 but due to lack of follow-through, the Index oscillated in a well-maintained range to end the session at 24,286.50 with gains of 162.65 points. Barring media, all other sectors ended the day in green with Bank Nifty being the top performer followed by metal and PSU Banks. Broader markets outperformed the frontline index as mid and smallcap gained by 0.79% &amp; 1.03% respectively". Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities noted that today, the benchmark indices registered a fresh all time high of 24,309/80,074. The Nifty ends 162 points higher while the Sensex was up by 545 points. Almost all the major sectoral indices were traded in to the positive territory but private bank index outperformed rallied over 2 percent. Technically, after a gap up opening market comfortably trading above 24,200/79,600 resistance level which is largely positive. "In addition, on intraday charts it is holding higher high and higher low formation, which supports further uptrend from the current levels. We are of the view that, as long as the index is trading above 24200/79600 the bullish structure is likely to continue". Arvinder Singh Nanda, Senior Vice President of Master Capital Services noted that BSE Sensex today touched the 80,000 mark for the first time, setting a new all-time high. "This milestone comes after the index added the last 10,000 points in under seven months, having first hit 70,000 on December 11, 2023". But while the long-term outlook remains positive, he advised caution at current levels.

The Nifty-50 Index and Sensex gained around 2.5 per cent each in the past week, scaling new all-time highs as market expectations turned further bullish over the past week. While the mid-cap index gained around 0.45 per cent and the small-cap index gained 0.44 per cent underperforming large-caps. "The improvement in market sentiment over the past week suggests that the market has steadied post Lok Sabha elections. Markets remained optimistic about strong government support for the economy, especially for the manufacturing sector, in the upcoming Union Budget," said Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research. Commodity markets showed mixed performance as spot gold rebounded, closing 1.27 per cent higher at USD 2327. Base metals and the energy complex, however, experienced declines. US Treasury yields eased to 4.28 per cent, exerting downward pressure on the Dollar Index.

India benchmark equity closes in red, stocks of Bank Nifty dip 469 points

Mumbai: Selling pressure continued in <keyword id="20459350" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-stock-markets" source="keywords">Indian stock markets</keyword> on Tuesday, following similar trends in Asian markets. <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> and <keyword id="19896382" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sensex" source="keywords">Sensex</keyword> showed mixed openings, with the Nifty 50 index recording a marginal gain of 36 points or 0.15 per cent, opening at 24,832.20 points, while the Sensex index opened at 80,826.56 points, registering a decline of 223.44 points or 0.28 per cent. Experts noted that geopolitical pressure and the continued shift of foreign investment from India to China have added to the selling pressure on Indian equities. "Market has turned weak responding to negative cues from escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, massive FPI selling and concerns surrounding the election results due today. The most important trigger which pulled the Nifty 5.6 per cent down from the peak has been the sustained big FPI selling during the last six trading days" said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services. In the sectoral indices, Nifty Private Bank led the gains with a surge of 0.55 per cent at the opening session, and Nifty Bank also rose by 0.5 per cent, while Nifty FMCG, Nifty Media, and Nifty Metal faced selling pressure. Among the Nifty 50 stocks, 20 opened in advance, 26 declined, and 4 remained unchanged. <keyword id="20015748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Foreign-Portfolio-Investors" source="keywords">Foreign Portfolio Investors</keyword> (FPIs) have sold equities worth Rs 50,011 crores during the last six trading sessions, which has been more than offset by <keyword id="20234284" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Domestic-Institutional-Investors" source="keywords">Domestic Institutional Investors</keyword> (DII) buying Rs 53,203 crores. Despite this, the market has corrected by 5.6 per cent due to weak sentiments. Experts also noted that there are enough indicators to suggest that FPIs have been following a 'Sell India, Buy China' strategy. Elevated valuations in India and cheaper valuations for Chinese stocks have triggered this shift in FPI strategy. "The Nifty index on Monday closed at the crucial support level of 24,800, with momentum indicators in the oversold territory, which may trigger a temporary bounce. However, a weekly close below 24,800 could lead to further declines, potentially down to 24,000" said Varun Aggarwal, MD, Profit Idea. Other Asian markets also faced high selling pressure on Tuesday, with Hong Kong's Hang Seng index down by more than 7.5 per cent at the time of this report. Japan's Nikkei index was down by 1.21 per cent, while Taiwan's weighted index dropped by 0.76 per cent.

Nifty, Sensex open flat despite DIIs buying more than FIIs selling in last six sessions

Indian companies across multiple sectors have reported disappointing results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, notes a new JM Financials report. Consequently, their poor performance has triggered stock price corrections for affected companies. The brunt of this weaker than expected earnings was largely borne by consumer centric sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), retail, and auto, which slacked largely due to dampened urban demand. For instance, India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5% YoY decline in its total domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, largely on the back of pent-up inventory. Similarly, Honda reported a staggering 23% YoY dip in its total sales during October 2024. A recent report by Bernstein noted that around 48% of the companies listed on the NSE100 index missed their earnings estimate for Q2FY25, the highest since March 2020. Most companies have mentioned deteriorated domestic demand, urban slowing, macroeconomic risk, and margin pressures as the main reasons behind the dip. "The quarter's earnings have made investors nervous," noted the JM Financials report. The challenging environment stems from multiple factors: softening consumer demand, rising input costs, and companies' limited ability to increase prices. Moreover, this is not limited to just one quarter. Companies have been reporting weak, single-digit earnings growth for the last six consecutive quarters. Data from India Data Hub also suggests that corporate profits of listed companies plunged by as much as 3.4% during the quarter ended September 30, 2024. This is in stark contrast to the year-ago period, where they had shot up by over 40% The oil and gas sector had a difficult quarter, with refiners hit by weak margins and city gas distributors struggling with higher input costs. Financial institutions showed mixed results. While government-owned banks reported strong numbers, microfinance institutions and some private lenders faced massive difficulties with their unsecured loans. Most notable amongst this was the case of IndusInd Bank, which saw its net profits dip by 40% amidst burgeoning provisions, which climbed 87% to Rs 1,820 crore in Q2, as against Rs 974 crore reported in the year-ago period. <h2>Markets head southwards</h2>The selling trend by FPIs has dragged down the major Indian indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, both of which have dropped by around 8% since the beginning of this selling spree in October. According to National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) data, FPIs offloaded equities worth a significant Rs 19,994 crore in just the first five trading sessions of November last week. The impact is clearly visible on Indian stock markets. Data suggests that while every sector in October closed the month in red, auto, oil and gas, and consumer durables were the most badly hit, each declining by as much as 10% during the month. Another indicator underlining the inherent weakness of the market was that the month saw only 242 stocks hit their 52-week high, significantly below the usual monthly average of 310.
