<keyword id="19940291" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Diwali" source="keywords">Diwali</keyword> is just around the corner, and most traders and stockbrokers are gearing up for <keyword id="23618998" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Muhurat-trading" source="keywords">muhurat trading</keyword>, which will take place on Friday, November 1 this year, between 6 and 7 pm. The one-hour trading session will mark the beginning of the new year in the Hindu calendar, or Samvat 2081. Generally, markets don't see much trade or activity during this one-hour session, given that muhurat trading is largely symbolic. It stems from the Indian tradition of closing our annual financial accounts on the day of Diwali and then starting afresh with the upcoming new year. Investors look to make their first profitable transaction of the new year and believe that any new investments during this one-hour window will bring them long-term prosperity. Like with usual trades, settlement happens on a T+1 basis. Gaurav Garg, who heads the markets desk at Lemonn, a new-age <keyword id="20300872" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-trading" source="keywords">stock trading</keyword> app, explains that retail investors usually make symbolic purchases of small quantities of stocks or invest in blue-chip stocks or large-cap stocks as part of their portfolio-building strategy during muhurat trading. "Here, it is less about immediate profits and more about its cultural and traditional aspects. The number of trades in this session also tends to be 20–30% lower, compared to a typical trading day, since institutional investors and high-frequency traders stay away from muhurat trading," he adds. <h2>How has the market performed during muhurat trading in the past?</h2>Much like us, the markets also put on a positive, festive outlook during this time. Data suggests that over 10 years, muhurat to muhurat returns, i.e., the performance of <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> or <keyword id="19896382" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sensex" source="keywords">Sensex</keyword> from one Diwali muhurat to that of next year's, has averaged around 11-13%. In fact, in the past decade, the average gain during muhurat trading has been approximately 0.5% to 1% on major indices. Over the last 10 years, 8 out of 10 muhurat sessions have yielded positive returns for investors. In fact, four of these 8 sessions have delivered double-digit returns. Some of these outliers include 2021, i.e., at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, where Nifty’s muhurat-to-muhurat returns were a staggering 40.19%. Sensex closely followed suit with 37.65%. 2022 saw the returns from these indices slip into the reds, despite a positive muhurat day performance. Stock market rebounds after one-year low; Sensex and Nifty regain ground amid value buying

Bloodbath on the D-Street entered its fifth straight day today, with <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> dipping by 218 points to close the day at 24,180.80, much below the 25,000-mark. <keyword id="19896382" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sensex" source="keywords">Sensex</keyword> also dropped a massive 662 points to close the week at 79,402.29 points. Notably, this was the worst weekly run experienced by the markets over the last 14 months. Clearly, the markets are not in the mood to embrace the impending festivities. Only 12 out of 50 stocks on the Nifty50 advanced today, while the other 38 declined. It was no different on the BSE, where an astounding 3,101 stocks slipped during the day, while just 841 inched up. Smallcaps bore the biggest brunt of this drawdown, with the smallcap 100, 50, 250, and microcaps each sliding by over 2% during the day. Amidst sectors, media, metal, PSU banks, consumer durables, and oil and gas skidded over 2% each today. Gaurav Garg, Research Analyst at Lemonn Markets Desk, explains that on a weekly basis, benchmarks had recorded five consecutive daily losses. Markets appear oversold, with RSI (Relative Strength Index) falling to 27 levels, its lowest in more than a year. Persistent foreign outflows with a record ~97000 crores so far in October, along with disappointing <keyword id="23378466" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q2-earnings" source="keywords">Q2 earnings</keyword>, have led to sharp valuation corrections in stocks with high multiples as investors adjust their expectations for future growth. "Markets continued its downward trajectory as a broader selloff pulled down key benchmarks with Sensex ending below the crucial 80k mark. The dismal Q2 earnings so far has aggravated the investors' woes while persistent <keyword id="21360658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FII-selling" source="keywords">FII selling</keyword> continued to create havoc in the market," said Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd. On October 24, 2024, i.e. yesterday, foreign investors offloaded a massive Rs 5,062.45 worth of equities, while domestic investors remained net buyers, purchasing around Rs 3,620.47 crore worth of shares. Thus far in October, foreign investors have pulled out a record Rs 97,205.42 crore from Indian markets. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities expects that the "market sentiment will continue to be weighed down by weaker-than-expected Q2FY25 earnings prints and continued weak commentary. FPI flows are expected to remain volatile in the days to come". "Indian equity markets corrected sharply this week as FII continued with selling in Indian markets. Benchmark indices (Nifty 50 and Sensex 30) declined between 2-3% this week. The midcap and the <keyword id="20187540" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="smallcap-stocks" source="keywords">smallcap stocks</keyword> witnessed selling pressure. As a result, the BSE Midcap and the BSE Smallcap indices underperformed the larger peers and were down between 5-8% on a weekly basis. Massacre continues on Sensex and Nifty as foreign investors withdraw Rs 97,205.42 crore in October

Indian banks are expected to have steady growth in earnings and returns over the next 3–4 years, according to a recent report by Jefferies. It expects a 13% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in loan growth for banks between FY24 and FY27, helmed by a supportive environment and expected adjustments in interest rates. "We expect steady growth in earnings and stable returns, Over FY24-27, the banks we cover should see 13% CAGRin loans We factor 25-50 bps cut in rates, &amp; depending on timing, NIMs will move," the report said. Depending on the timing, these rate cuts could impact banks' <keyword id="20076541" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="net-interest-margins" source="keywords">net interest margins</keyword> (NIMs), which measure the difference between interest income generated and interest paid to depositors. The report also notes that banks' net interest income (NII), a critical metric that is reflective of how much a bank earns from its lending, could grow at a steady 12% CAGR, which would support overall earnings growth. <h2>Rate cuts probable next year</h2>Per SBI Mutual Fund's monthly outlook for November 2024, while markets were initially speculating possible rate reductions in December this year or February next year these chances now stand dampened due to two reasons. First, elevated CPI numbers in September, which stood at a nine-month high, underlined the stickiness of food inflation. Secondly, RBI governor Das recently highlighted his hawkish stance at a conference, stating that "rate cuts at this stage would be premature and risky’. The report further adds that February 2025, or even April, would be a better time to discuss repo rate cuts in India. Even <keyword id="19985925" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bank-credit-growth" source="keywords">bank credit growth</keyword> has continued to outpace deposit growth for two years now. However, they seem to be inching closer in the recent past. For instance, in October 2024, while bank credit growth remained at 12.7%, the deposit growth rate followed closely at 11.8%. This also means that banks are witnessing an elevated bank credit-to-deposit ratio, standing at 77% in October. <h2>Risks in unsecured lending </h2>However, Jefferies noted some areas of caution that could influence growth in other revenue streams, particularly fees. Growth in fees may be at risk due to expected declines in the disbursal of unsecured loans, which generally carry higher interest rates and generate higher fees for banks. October saw stress and defaults rising in the unsecured lending space, prompting the RBI to intervene. As a result, unsecured loans by banks have only grown by 12.1%, the lowest since the pandemic. Despite these risks, the report expects banks' return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE) to remain healthy, underscoring the sector's stable profitability potential. The report also highlights that while the Nifty Banks index has risen by 19% over the past year, it has still underperformed the broader Nifty index, which delivered 27% returns in the same period. BSE Bankex has been along similar lines, generating returns worth 19% over one year. While the Nifty banks' index has a YTD (yield to date) of 7.63%, it continues to trail Nifty's YTD of 11.30%

Indian banks to have steady growth in earning over next 3-4 years, fees from unsecured lending may dip, notes Jefferies report

Indian companies across multiple sectors have reported disappointing results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, notes a new JM Financials report. Consequently, their poor performance has triggered stock price corrections for affected companies. The brunt of this weaker than expected earnings was largely borne by consumer centric sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), retail, and auto, which slacked largely due to dampened urban demand. For instance, India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5% YoY decline in its total domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, largely on the back of pent-up inventory. Similarly, Honda reported a staggering 23% YoY dip in its total sales during October 2024. A recent report by Bernstein noted that around 48% of the companies listed on the NSE100 index missed their earnings estimate for Q2FY25, the highest since March 2020. Most companies have mentioned deteriorated domestic demand, urban slowing, macroeconomic risk, and margin pressures as the main reasons behind the dip. "The quarter's earnings have made investors nervous," noted the JM Financials report. The challenging environment stems from multiple factors: softening consumer demand, rising input costs, and companies' limited ability to increase prices. Moreover, this is not limited to just one quarter. Companies have been reporting weak, single-digit earnings growth for the last six consecutive quarters. Data from India Data Hub also suggests that corporate profits of listed companies plunged by as much as 3.4% during the quarter ended September 30, 2024. This is in stark contrast to the year-ago period, where they had shot up by over 40% The oil and gas sector had a difficult quarter, with refiners hit by weak margins and city gas distributors struggling with higher input costs. Financial institutions showed mixed results. While government-owned banks reported strong numbers, microfinance institutions and some private lenders faced massive difficulties with their unsecured loans. Most notable amongst this was the case of IndusInd Bank, which saw its net profits dip by 40% amidst burgeoning provisions, which climbed 87% to Rs 1,820 crore in Q2, as against Rs 974 crore reported in the year-ago period. <h2>Markets head southwards</h2>The selling trend by FPIs has dragged down the major Indian indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, both of which have dropped by around 8% since the beginning of this selling spree in October. According to National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) data, FPIs offloaded equities worth a significant Rs 19,994 crore in just the first five trading sessions of November last week. The impact is clearly visible on Indian stock markets. Data suggests that while every sector in October closed the month in red, auto, oil and gas, and consumer durables were the most badly hit, each declining by as much as 10% during the month. Another indicator underlining the inherent weakness of the market was that the month saw only 242 stocks hit their 52-week high, significantly below the usual monthly average of 310.

The stock ended at Rs 1,175.35, lower by 5.19 per cent after tumbling 6.75 per cent to Rs 1,156 during the day on the <keyword id="19895774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BSE" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BSE">BSE</keyword>. On the <keyword id="20004725" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="NSE" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="NSE">NSE</keyword>, it slumped 5.08 per cent to settle at Rs 1,176.25. The stock emerged as the biggest laggard among the Sensex and <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> firms. The company's <keyword id="20097096" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-valuation" source="keywords">market valuation</keyword> diminished by Rs 19,816.9 crore to Rs 3,63,296.40 crore. After a sharp fall in intra-day trade, the 30-share BSE Sensex settled 109.08 points or 0.14 per cent lower at 80,039.80 and the <keyword id="19950205" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nse-nifty" source="keywords">NSE Nifty</keyword> dipped 7.40 points or 0.03 per cent to 24,406.10. Axis Bank on Wednesday reported a 5.66 per cent rise in consolidated net profit for the June quarter at Rs 6,436 crore, restricted by challenges on the asset quality front. On a standalone basis, the third biggest private sector lender reported a 4 per cent rise in net profit at Rs 6,035 crore. The core net interest income grew 12 per cent to Rs 13,448 crore during the quarter on the back of the Net Interest Margin (<keyword id="19936365" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nim" source="keywords">NIM</keyword>) staying stable at 4.05 per cent and 14 per cent growth in advances. The other income grew 14 per cent to Rs 5,783 crore during the quarter.
