A bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra on Thursday took note of the submissions of lawyer Anas Tanwir on the issue. The bench said the matter will be listed on Friday. The plea said many candidates have been allocated cities which are highly inconvenient for them to reach. It said the test cities were allotted on July 31 and the specific centres will be declared on August 8. While the allocation of the centres was done to curb malpractices, the plea said due to the paucity of time, it is difficult for the candidates to make arrangements for travel to specific cities. "Issue a writ in the nature of Mandamus ...the Respondents (<keyword id="19904021" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Testing-Agency" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="National Testing Agency" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="National Testing Agency">National Testing Agency</keyword>) to reschedule the NEET-PG 2024 examination," stated the plea filed by Vishal Soren. The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET)-Postgraduate exam was initially supposed to be held on June 23. Supreme Court to hear plea seeking postponement of NEET-PG on Friday

The <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court" source="keywords">Supreme Court</keyword> on Monday refused to entertain a <keyword id="19957723" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PIL" source="keywords">PIL</keyword> challenging the government's decision to cancel the UGC-NET examination following alleged <keyword id="20713483" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="question-paper-leak" source="keywords">question paper leak</keyword>. A bench comprising <keyword id="15469242" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chief-Justice-D-Y-Chandrachud" source="Orion">Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud</keyword> and justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, however, said the dismissal of the PIL does not amount to a decision on the merits of the PIL as it was filed by a lawyer and not by aggrieved students. "Why are you (lawyer) coming? Let the students come here themselves," the CJI told the lawyer, adding "while declining the above PIL, we express nothing on merits". The bench asked advocate Ujjawal Gaur, who has filed the PIL as a petitioner, to focus on some legal matters and leave such issues for aggrieved persons. In the plea, Gaur also sought a direction to immediately stay the proposed re-examination of the UGC-NET exam until the CBI completes its inquiry into the <keyword id="20116086" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paper-leak" source="keywords">paper leak</keyword> allegations. "The petitioner asserts that the decision is not only arbitrary but also unjust, given the recent findings of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). "The CBI's investigation brings the fact that the evidence suggesting the paper leak is doctored, thus nullifying the grounds on which the cancellation was based," the plea, filed through advocate Rohit Pandey, said. The petitioner submitted that the "unwarranted" cancellation of the exam has caused significant distress, anxiety, and an unnecessary expenditure of resources for the aspirants who have rigorously prepared for this crucial examination.

Supreme Court refuses to entertain PIL against government decision to cancel UGC-NET exam

New Delhi [India], June 23 (ANI): The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare postponed the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Postgraduate (<keyword id="6361994" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="NEET" source="Orion">NEET</keyword> PG) Examination on Saturday, which was scheduled to be held on Sunday, and said that a fresh date will be announced at the earliest. The NEET-PG exams were scheduled to be held on June 23. "Taking into consideration, the recent incidents of allegations regarding the integrity of certain competitive examinations, the Ministry of Health has decided to undertake a thorough assessment of the robustness of the processes of the NEET-PG Entrance Examination, conducted by the National Board of Examination for medical students," the ministry statement read. "It has accordingly been decided, as a precautionary measure, to postpone the NEET-PG Entrance Examination, scheduled to be held on 23rd June, 2024. The fresh date of this examination will be notified at the earliest," the ministry added. "The Ministry of Health sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused to the students. This decision has been taken in the best interests of the students and to maintain the sanctity of the examination process," the health ministry said. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) was fully prepared to conduct the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) Post-Graduate (PG) 2024. Speaking exclusively to ANI, Dr Rakesh Sharma, OSD to President and Member, Governing Body, NBEMS said, "All eyes of the nation are on NBEMS for the conduct of NEET PG 2024 and we will not let down the hope of the nation. We will conduct the test through a computer-based test (CBT) mode throughout the country." On Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs) for successfully delivering and maintaining transparency, he said, "NBEMS has robust SOPs for conducting exams because of which NBEMS has been successfully delivering the exams year after year. These SOPs are stringently followed. NBEMS has worked very hard on maintaining the secrecy of the question paper and there is no chance that there will be any leakage of the question paper." He further said that NBEMS is supported by medical colleges, faculty, MoHFW, Flying Squads, Deans and Principals, Vice-chancellor and other agencies, "NBEMS has support from various medical colleges, faculty, MoHFW and other agencies. NBEMS has already briefed the chief secretaries and DGP of all states for safe and secure conduct of the exam." This resulted in several protests across the country, with protestors and political parties demanding to disband the NTA. An unprecedented 67 candidates achieved a perfect score of 720 marks out of 720, which added to the concerns. The 7-member committee, led by ISRO former chairman Dr K. Radhakrishnan, will submit its report to the ministry in the next two months. "In order to ensure transparent, smooth and fair conduct of examinations through the National Testing Agency (NTA), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education constituted a High-Level Committee of Experts to make recommendations on Reform in mechanism of examination process improvement in data security protocols and the structure and functioning of National Testing Agency," the ministry said.

A vacation bench of justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta was told by the counsel for the Centre and the <keyword id="19904021" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Testing-Agency" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="National Testing Agency" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="National Testing Agency">National Testing Agency</keyword> (NTA) that the students, who were given grace marks, will be given an option to take the re-test. The court said it will not stay the counselling process for admissions. If the candidates, out of the 1,563, do not wish to take up the retest then their earlier marks, sans the grace marks, will be given for the purposes of the results. The results of the re-test will be declared on June 30 and the counselling for admission in the MBBS, BDS, other courses will start on July 6, the Centre said. Taking note of the submissions, the bench said all the pleas, including the one filed by Alakh Pandey, the chief executive of EdTech firm Physics Wallah over the issue of award of grace marks, will be taken up for hearing on July 8. They also include the petitions seeking cancellation of NEET-UG, 2024 on account of allegation of question paper leaks and other malpractices. The examination was held by the NTA on May 5 across 4,750 centres and around 24 lakh candidates took it. The results were expected to be declared on June 14 but were announced on June 4, apparently because the evaluation of the answer sheets got completed earlier. The allegations such as question paper leak and the grant of grace marks to over 1,500 medical aspirants have led to protests and filing of cases in seven high courts as also the Supreme Court. As many as 67 students scored a perfect 720, unprecedented in the NTA's history, with six from a centre in Haryana's Faridabad figuring in the list, raising suspicions about irregularities. Scores of students protested in Delhi on June 10 seeking a probe into alleged irregularities. It has been alleged that grace marks contributed to 67 students sharing the top rank. The NEET-UG examination is conducted by the NTA for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other related courses in government and private institutions across the country. Row over NEET-UG: Grace marks given to 1,563 candidates withdrawn, Centre to SC

The budget for the previous cycle was Rs 3,396.96 crore for the previous financial year. The government has invested heavily in Khelo India over the years as the programme continues to unearth talent from all parts of the country. While Khelo India's actual allocation in 2022-23 stood at Rs 596.39 crore, it was increased by more than Rs 400 crore, to Rs 1,000 crores, in the 2023-24 budget, before being revised to Rs 880 crore. The government has continued to add programmes ever since the inaugural Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) were held in 2018. The ministry added Khelo India University Games in 2020, before also launching the Khelo India Winter Games the same year and the Khelo India Para Games in 2023. Hundreds of Khelo India State Centres of Excellence (KISCE) have been set up across the country, which aim to provide facilities for athletes with potential. Several Khelo India athletes are currently in India's Olympic-bound contingent. The government's assistance to <keyword id="20418970" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Sports-Federations" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="National Sports Federations" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="National Sports Federations">National Sports Federations</keyword> (NSFs) has also seen an increase of Rs 15 crore -- from Rs 325 crore in 2023-24 to Rs 340 crore in the latest budget. The budget for Sports Authority of India, which apart from maintaining its stadia across the country also manages the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) to prepare athletes for the global sporting extravaganzas, has also been enhanced from Rs 795.77 crore to Rs 822.60 crore, which is a jump of Rs 26.83 crore. Several of its approved 2023 H-1B applications for Chinese nationals were for roles in e-commerce, including a creator manager role focused on live shopping and software engineering roles tied to shopping ads.

The idea is that older people who drink <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ketones-fuel-athletic-performance-sports-2017-11">ketone esters</a> — supplements designed to help the body run on ketones instead of sugar — might be able to gain some renewed pep in their step.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/keto-diet">Ketones</a> already have a lot of street cred with Silicon Valley biohackers, who celebrate them as the body's "preferred" energy source because they're what our bodies use for fuel when we're fasting or when we don't have enough <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/glucose-monitors-over-the-counter-track-blood-sugar-health-fitness-2024-8">glucose</a> circulating to keep all of our organs humming along."Actually, they're the preferred backup," Brianna Stubbs, the director of translational science at the Buck Institute, told Business Insider.Ketones are what our body generally burns when it doesn't have enough carbs at the ready. "Whenever there are ketones in the blood, the body will use that as energy in preference to sugar," she said.When ketones are coursing through a person's bloodstream, they're said to be "in ketosis" because ketones — and not glucose — are providing the fuel for their cells. Ketosis is a tool that evolved to protect our brains and bodies from damage during periods of famine. Scientists think this natural ketone metabolism safety switch we've developed could also be harnessed for healthy aging, because a number of organs, including the brain, become less efficient at using sugar for fuel as we age.The nationwide study that Stubbs and her mentor, Dr. John Newman, are launching will aim to measure whether older people drinking ketone shots become less frail, with better <a target="_blank" href="https://businessinsider.com/longevity-experts-use-walking-test-to-measure-biological-age-2024-9">walking scores</a>, or experience improvements in energy, cognition, or mood.<h2 id="1ee8bb80-d6a7-4d69-a0fe-253b34f64173">Ketone drinks are not ketogenic diets in a bottle</h2><div type="image" title="ketone drink" height="1600" width="1600" msid="113915173" hostid="261" sizebytes="44236"></div><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intermittent-fasting-benefits-and-risks-for-longevity-weight-loss-cancer-2024-4">Fasting</a>, low-carb, high-fat diets like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-keto-what-is-ketosis-keto-diet-explained-2018-8">keto</a>, and drinking ketone esters can all prompt ketones to circulate in a person's blood. But they don't get to that end result in the same way.Ketone ester drinks don't require the liver to convert fat into ketones, which is what happens with fasting and the keto diet. Instead, they deliver ketones straight to the stomach and the liver, where they are processed and pushed out into the bloodstream."If you were wanting to lose weight, you want to be burning your own fat and turning it into ketones," Stubbs said. Ketone drinks don't do that. "You have not burned your own fat to make those ketones. It's not a shortcut."For several years, scientists thought ketone drinks might be good for athletic performance, taken as a pre-race drink. Even the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.buckinstitute.org/blog/ketone-bodies-likely-good-for-aging-and-maybe-for-the-military-too/">US military invested</a> in the idea. But more recently, Stubbs and other athletes have coalesced around the idea that ketone esters are better tools for athletic recovery.That's how the former Olympic rower uses them. Stubbs recently completed a six-day, 380-kilometer ultramarathon through the craggy mountains of Wales. During her rest stops, she drank ketone esters alongside carbs and protein. She hopes this strategy helps her body recover after hard workouts, maintaining muscle and vigor.<div type="image" title="triathlon swim swimming" height="1335" width="2000" msid="113915175" hostid="261" sizebytes="121272"></div>Because older people already have more trouble using sugar, there's also some hope that ketone esters might be good for helping their bodies maintain strength, potentially reducing inflammation, boosting mood, and improving cognitive function. But that all remains to be seen.Independent fasting and ketosis expert Mark Mattson, former head of the National Institute on Aging's neuroscience lab, said the study is "worth trying.""There is some rationale for why it might help, and it's very safe," he told Business Insider.Mattson's excited to see what kind of effect these drinkable ketones might have on aging brains in particular, since they are more susceptible to cognitive impairment and diseases like Parkinson's.But he also says getting into ketosis through other techniques like intermittent fasting has extra benefits for the body and the brain that shouldn't be discounted.In an initial pilot study Stubbs recently completed at the Buck, ketone drinks appeared safe for adults over 65 when <a target="_blank" href="https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.04.16.24305925v1">tested</a> during a four-month period. The most common complaints were nausea and upset stomachs, which are common issues with ketosis, even when achieved through fasting or low-carb diets.The new, bigger trial will be a five-month study of 180 adults over 65 years old in California, Connecticut, and Ohio, testing whether ketone esters might help with frailty. Recruitment starts in November.In order to test whether a ketone drink might actually be helpful for aging, Stubbs is aiming to recruit "people who would probably self-describe as slowing down," she said. Maybe these days, walking two blocks is more of a challenge for them than it used to be.Results from the study won't likely be available until 2028, Stubbs said. Assuming positive outcomes eventually surface, she imagines a future in which an older adult who's losing muscle and starting to experience cognitive decline might have a ketone drink every morning and night. But she also says that any eventual geriatric recommendation for ketone esters isn't likely to be one-size-fits-all."If I had my super fit, healthy 90-year-old who took one statin and that was it, and she had no other problems and everything was functioning fine for her, I'd be like, 'Well, you're just adding something else in there that maybe you don't need,'" Stubbs said.

For young people entering the workforce applying for entry-level jobs, résumés often don't reveal more than schooling and internships. Categories where <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unconscious-biases-in-hiring-decisions-2015-7">biases and privilege</a> can tip a hand. When O'Brien started her business in 2023, having previously worked as a director at a media agency, she was aware of the issues in job hunting. She knew <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recruiter-explains-interview-habits-holding-gen-z-back-2024-7">young candidates</a> were getting ghosted and not receiving feedback on why they'd been passed over, which can be "soul-destroying," she said."I wanted to create something that addressed diversity, that could make job hunting more equitable, more inclusive, more positive for the candidate," O'Brien told BI.O'Brien found success in hiring Gen Z talent with less conventional methods. <h2 id="5badc1dd-2f27-4c54-9990-8568856961ff">Résumés may be a root cause of hiring bias</h2>Recruiters have hundreds of resumes to look at and tend to gravitate toward people like themselves, O'Brien said."I remember occasions in my old job where I'd be looking at CVs, and then somebody would look over my shoulder and be like, Oh, they're an Arsenal supporter, get them in," O'Brien said. "These things don't mean that they will be the best-suited person to the job."Sporting teams aren't the only social markers that may impact a candidate's odds. Hiring managers may have a subconscious or conscious <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/black-job-candidates-more-likely-to-face-discriminatory-questions-2022-9">racial bias</a>. This problem was demonstrated earlier this year when researchers sent more than 83,000 fake applications to big US companies, and candidates with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-display-race-gender-bias-when-hiring-resumes-names-jobs-2024-4">white-sounding names received more callbacks</a>.BI has also previously reported on a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fake-name-resume-hired-guilty-2024-5">struggling job seeker </a>who felt changing the name on his résumé to something more white-sounding may have helped him land a role.Ageism is also an issue, with about a third of hiring managers <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hiring-managers-biased-against-gen-z-older-workers-survey-says-2024-4">not wanting to hire older workers or Gen Zers</a>, according to a Resume Builder survey in March.O'Brien believes many of these issues can be traced to résumés. She tested her theory by hiring her interns based on how well they made mock-up social media posts for her company."In the job posting, I said I'm not going to look at a single CV," she said. "I don't care what your academic background is. I don't care about your work experience history." She told BI she wanted an intern who was reasonably competent at the job, had autonomy, and had a good attitude. It worked out great. The two interns she hired are now permanent employees.While helping out a fellow hiring manager at another company, O'Brien asked if she could test her method on the candidates he was screening to ensure they were inclusive and fair.The person who got the job was originally in the reject pile because his CV didn't stand out."I was like, OK, I'm onto something here," O'Brien said. "He was phenomenal, but you wouldn't have known that from his CV."The hiring manager wrongly assumed this candidate lacked soft skills and would struggle with client-facing work because their résumé was so technical."But the reality was the total opposite," said O'Brien. "You can't showcase in your CV what you are like as a human."<h2 id="626c8ae4-2140-4ad9-a3bf-ed385a65da39">Entry-level positions aren't so entry-level</h2>Many Gen Zers are looking for their first jobs where they may not have much relevant experience. Their chances of landing an interview can depend solely on their education or on whether they've been privileged enough to complete a sought-after internship.Those who didn't attend top colleges may find themselves in the reject pile simply by default. This is just a "lazy way of shortlisting," O'Brien said."It's alienating Gen Z," she said. "That massively hinders their confidence. They're thinking, well, what chance do I have? And employers are exacerbating that problem."Instead, O'Brien finds ways for employers to narrow their search to candidates with traits and skills that matter to them. Her approach mainly follows the principles of matching junior candidates based on their values and potential and not judging them on where they may have received their education."This is groundbreaking for Gen Z, they absolutely love it," O'Brien said. "For employers, we've been really lucky that a lot of them get it."<h2 id="0ad38497-3072-4c16-9163-38a47bdc9b8f">Employers are taking note</h2>Three employers, december19, Mobsta, and My Big Career, have stopped screening entry-level candidates based on their résumés. Majella Lavelle, a managing partner at the media planning and buying agency december19, told BI that traditional recruiting methods were "time-consuming and overwhelming" and led to a lack of diversity."We moved to blind CVs some time ago, and that definitely removed any unconscious bias," she said.Blind résumés can still be a good starting point, Lavelle added, but they needed a completely new approach.Laura Littlehales, the CEO of MyBigCareer, which provides disadvantaged children with career advice, said the résumé-free approach has helped the charity find junior talent and save money.She told BI she wanted to recruit young people but found it challenging to hire on potential rather than experience."Through this approach, we were able to reach a greater number of candidates, much less time was spent on recruitment, and the caliber of candidates was much higher than previous recruitment we had run ourselves," Littlehales said.David Graham, the head of customer success at the sustainable advertising agency Mobsta, said removing résumés has transformed the way the business hires candidates.He didn't realize that before he was exposed to such a small portion of young and found the hiring experience "refreshing." O'Brien said it's amazing to see candidates who were stacking shelves in a grocery store and or working at McDonald's starting new roles they may not have been considered for. "The longer they are trapped in lower-skilled jobs that don't offer longer-term career opportunities, the harder it is to break in," O'Brien said. "They're ready to go," she said. "They just needed a fair opportunity."

But Altman argued that an international agency would offer more flexibility than national legislation — and that's important given how quickly AI evolves."The reason I've pushed for an agency-based approach for kind of like the big-picture stuff and not like a write-it-in-law is in 12 months it will all be written wrong," he said. He thinks that lawmakers, even if they're "true world experts," probably can't write policies that will appropriately regulate events 12 to 24 months from now. In simple terms, Altman thinks AI should be regulated like an airplane."When like significant loss of human life is a serious possibility, like airplanes, or any number of other examples where I think we're happy to have some sort of testing framework," he said. "I don't think about an airplane when I get on it. I just assume it's going to be safe."

Around 14,90,000 candidates have registered for CUET-UG, out of which, about 8,10,000 candidates are appearing in the first slot on July 15, while about 6,80,000 candidates will appear in the second slot starting from August 4. The <keyword id="581232" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-testing-agency" source="Orion">National Testing Agency</keyword> is conducting this test at various centres in 554 cities across <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> and 10 cities outside India. <keyword id="44171" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ugc" source="Orion">UGC</keyword> President M Jagadesh Kumar said that 98 per cent candidates have been allotted CUET exam centres in their chosen cities. According to the National Testing Agency (NTA), students have applied for 54,555 unique combinations of subjects under the new education policy. Significantly, under the new education policy, students have been given more freedom to choose the subjects of their choice. Due to this, unique combinations of different subjects have been created. The <keyword id="13437603" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="central-university-entrance-test" source="Orion">Central University Entrance Test</keyword> is being conducted for undergraduate courses in colleges on the basis of the class <keyword id="155806" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="xii" source="Orion">XII</keyword> syllabus only. There are no questions in the entrance test from the syllabus of any other class other than XII. The marks obtained in class XII will not be considered for admission in the colleges under CUET. 85 Indian universities will provide admission to students in undergraduate courses through this process. In the first slot, the exam will be held on July 15, 16, 19 and 20 while in the second slot it will be organised on August 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10. Students who clear these exams will be considered eligible for admission in 90 universities. These include 43 central universities. According to the NTA, keeping in mind the large number of subjects, a specific date sheet has been prepared for each candidate.
