Indian PM Narendra Modi's hacked Twitter account told 73.4 million followers that the country would distribute 500 bitcoins among its citizens

And right in the evening we got the news that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) has took another step in his Digital India initiative by launching ‘Twitter Samvad’, a service aimed to boost the nation’s e-governance plans by helping government bodies and leaders communicate directly with citizens on a daily basis via tweets and SMSes on their mobile devices.

Through ‘Twitter Samvad’, Government of India will share a set of curated tweets delivered from the government and leaders’ accounts to mobile users across the country as SMS—every day. Updates on government services, policies and activities can be delivered to any user with a mobile device signed up for the service with each of the 16 launch partners. Anyone with a mobile phone, with our without a data plan, can register for the service by giving a missed call to a unique number for each of the partners. 
 
Twitter CEO Dick Costolo, who met Prime Minister Modi to discuss areas of collaboration, said, “Based on Indian technological innovation, Twitter Samvad is dedicated and specially built for the largest democracy of the world. The Lok Sabha election of 2014 was the first-ever Twitter Election in India and we want to continue contributing to the development of digital governance in India. As part of the Prime Minister’s Digital India initiative, this Tweet-powered service enables citizens to be the first to know about the government’s actions by receiving political content in real-time on their mobile devices anywhere in the country.” 
 
The company is demonstrating its commitment to the Indian market by launching Twitter Samvad during the Twitter CEO’s first-ever visit to India. Rishi Jaitly, Twitter’s Market Director for India and Southeast Asia, said, “We are proud to have launched a service here that is for the people and of the people. This can eventually give every political leader and every government organization a mobile microphone to connect with each Indian, whether in Imphal or in Diu or in Leh or in Pudducherry.” 
 
Twitter Samvad is based on the platform provided by ZipDial, an Indian company recently acquired by Twitter, making this the company’s first Indian service launched using indigenous technology.

 PMO sources said this in the wake of claims that the photograph was protected by US Copyright law. The account, however, was restored later on. The hacker renamed the account as <keyword id="6355315" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Elon-Musk" source="Orion">Elon Musk</keyword> and tweeted a great job. The account was restored and posts made by hackers were deleted. "The account @Mib_india has been restored. This is for the information of all the followers," the ministry tweeted. Last month Prime Minister Narendra Modi's <keyword id="6354616" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter" source="Orion">Twitter</keyword> account was compromised for a brief period and a post claiming that India had officially adopted bitcoin as legal tender was tweeted from it. "The Twitter handle of PM @narendramodi was very briefly compromised. The matter was escalated to Twitter and the account has been immediately secured. New Delhi, June 20 (IANS) Known for government control and censorship, Chinese social media has now removed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech and India's official statements on the border row. Modi's June 18 remarks about the country's border situation became inaccessible to users on WeChat. The Prime Minister's remarks came in the aftermath of the bloody faceoff in Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh in which 20 Indian soldiers lost their lives on Monday night. The Chinese side has not yet revealed the number of casualties on its side. Modi emphasised that while India desires peace, the country is capable of giving a befitting reply when instigated. MEA spokesman Anurag Srivastava's statement on the border row was also removed from the official WeChat account. A message on WeChat said, "Unable to view this content because it violates regulations." Ahead of his visit to China in 2015, Modi also opened an account on Sina Weibo, which is considered the Chinese equivalent of microblogging platform Twitter. Twiplomacy Study 2015, accessed by IANS, showed that Sushma Swaraj is the most followed foreign minister with 2,438,228 followers. She is far ahead of UAE' Abdullah Bin Zayed (1,608,831) and Turkey's Mevlut Cavusoglu (376,429). 
 
The study, which counted data till March 24, is an annual global survey of world leaders on Twitter. It is aimed at identifying the extent to which world leaders use the site and how they connect on the social network. 
 
The study revealed that three most followed world leaders were US President @BarackObama with 56,933,515 followers, Pope Francis (@Pontifex) with 19,580,910 followers on his nine different language accounts, and Modi with 10,902,510 followers. 
 
 Since his election in May 2014, Modi's account has moved into the top three most followed Twitter accounts of world leaders, said Twiplomacy's <keyword id="2827339" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Matthias-Luefkens">Matthias Luefkens</keyword>. He told IANS that Modi was also among the most effective in terms of re-tweets per tweet. 
 
Modi's huge victory in the 2014 general election was partly credited to a well-organised social media campaign. 
 
 
Besides, the study found the most followed world leaders have one thing in common: they have discovered Twitter as a powerful one-way broadcasting tool. They are only following a handful of other world leaders, if any, and are hardly conversational which is almost impossible, given the sheer size of their audience. 
 
Among the foreign ministries, the US State Department (@StateDept) is the most followed with 1,7 million followers ahead of the Turkish (@TC_Disisleri), the Russian (@MID_RF) and the French (@FranceDiplo) all with less than a million followers. 
 
The study said it was impossible to say whether governments pay to promote the accounts of their leaders. 
 
But "we have seen an interesting pattern on @IndianDiplomacy (official account of India's public diplomacy) and @MEAIndia (India's ministry of external affairs) accounts whose tweets are automatically re-tweeted by an army of 90 tweeps who all follow each other and whose sole purpose is to re-tweet the tweets from @IndianDiplomacy and @MEAIndia, the accounts listed on each of their public Twitter list, aptly entitled 'RT'," the study said. 
 
"Thanks to their dedicated action the tweets of @IndianDiplomacy and @MEAIndia are consistently re-tweeted 100 times but rarely favourited," it said. The study also showed Rwanda's President <keyword id="353683" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Paul-Kagame">Paul Kagame</keyword> as the most conversational world leader with 86 percent of his tweets being @replies to other Twitter users followed by Norway's Prime Minister <keyword id="1861557" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Erna-Solberg">Erna Solberg</keyword>. 
 
Conducted by global communications firm Burson-Marsteller, the report studied 669 Twitter accounts of heads of state and government, foreign ministers and their institutions in 166 countries worldwide.

It also said it blocked "certain terms" from appearing in its trending section, but did not say what these terms were. Twitter also revealed it's been getting messages from India's government.The company said: "Over the course of the last 10 days, Twitter has been served with several separate blocking orders by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act."It continued: "Out of these, two were emergency blocking orders that we temporarily complied with but subsequently restored access to the content in a manner that we believe was consistent with Indian law. After we communicated this to MeitY, we were served with a non-compliance notice."Twitter said it has at least semi-complied with the government's demands. In the blog it said has taken action against "more than 500" of the accounts flagged to it by the MeitY, including suspensions. It did not clarify how many suspensions it upheld as a result of the order.The MeitY tweeted on Wednesday saying Twitter had requested a meeting with the government prior to publishing the blog post. "Upon the request of Twitter seeking a meeting with the Govt., the Secretary IT was to engage with senior management of Twitter. The prevalence of digital media makes that even easier since there’s a higher frequency of news consumption. <keyword id="60684" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BBC">BBC</keyword>’s research found that there were four main narratives that make fake news go viral — “Hindu power and superiority,” “preservation and revival,” “progress and national pride as well as the personality and prowess of Modi.” A network analysis map showed that Twitter handles that were pushing fake news forward were in a ‘pro-BJP’ cluster rather than the ‘anti-BJP’ cluster. The advent of fake news in India is not just about people being misinformed, but how this information is then used to propagate acts of violence. Lynchings and other acts of violence are enforced with a sense of vigilante justice and a duty to protect your loved ones. At least 32 people have lost their lives over incidents that have been instigated by rumours according to <a href="http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/duty-identity-credibility.pdf">another report</a> by the BBC. BBC’s report took 16,000 Twitter accounts and 3,000 Facebook pages into consideration in order to determine how fake news spreads in India. Launched in 2009, Weibo means "microblog" in Chinese. Like Twitter, Weibo lets users to post comments, updates, pictures and videos. Western analysts have good words for the microblog, which they feel has given Chinese citizens a platform to engage and interact with other users, often discussing issues and topics outlawed by Beijing's infamous strict censorship.

Huang Xilian, deputy director general of Asian affairs, said Beijing wants India and China to act as a "bridge" for the development of Nepal and Sri Lanka so as to reduce strategic rivalry between the two Asian giants and firm up their strategic influence in the region.
