New Delhi, State-owned <keyword id="19909029" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bhel" source="keywords">BHEL</keyword> on Wednesday said it has bagged an order to set up a 2,400 <keyword id="20225858" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mw-supercritical-thermal-power-project" source="keywords">MW supercritical thermal power project</keyword> (STPP) from coal <keyword id="20225857" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="psu-nlc" source="keywords">PSU NLC</keyword> India Ltd. This is the largest power sector order won by the company through competitive bidding, BHEL said in a statement. "BHEL bags an order for setting up a 2,400 MW Supercritical Thermal <keyword id="47379" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="power-project" source="Orion">Power Project</keyword>. BHEL has won the prestigious order under <keyword id="20225859" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="international-competitive-bidding" source="keywords">International Competitive Bidding</keyword> (ICB) for the greenfield project on an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) basis at Jharsuguda in Odisha," the company said. The scope of the EPC contract includes engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection, and commissioning of crucial equipment, such as boilers, turbines, generators, and other auxiliary systems, for the 3x800 MW thermal power project. The scope also includes boilers with biomass co-firing capability and highly efficient latest pollution control equipment. The project will be commissioned within 64 months. On commissioning, this plant will contribute to meeting the future base load requirement of electricity in the country. The major equipment will be manufactured at BHEL's Trichy, Haridwar, Hyderabad, Jhansi, Bengaluru, Ranipet, Bhopal, Rudrapur, and Varanasi plants while the company's power sector - southern region will be responsible for the civil works, and erection and commissioning of the equipment. BHEL has a long-standing partnership with <keyword id="20174233" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nlcil" source="keywords">NLCIL</keyword> and installed a significant 77 per cent of the coal/lignite-based power stations of the utility, totalling 3,590 MW. It is the largest manufacturer of power generation equipment in the country and has been a major partner in the country's vision to achieve self-reliance in energy.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday announced a cut in customs duty on minerals such as lithium, copper and cobalt, which are critical for nuclear energy, renewable and other sectors, to give a fillip to the energy transition. In her budget speech in Lok Sabha, Sitharaman recalled that in the interim budget she had announced a strategy to sustain high and more resource-efficient economic growth, along with energy security in terms of availability, accessibility and affordability. "We will bring out a policy document on appropriate energy transition pathways that balances the imperatives of employment, growth and environmental sustainability," she said. Noting that minerals such as lithium, copper, cobalt and rare earth elements are critical for sectors like nuclear energy, <keyword id="19895602" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="renewable-energy" source="keywords">renewable energy</keyword>, space, defence, telecommunications, and high-tech electronics, she proposed to fully exempt customs duties on 25 critical minerals and reduce BCD (basic customs duty) on two of them. This will provide a major fillip to the processing and refining of such minerals and help secure their availability for these strategic and important sectors, she said. She stated that energy transition is critical in the fight against climate change. To support energy transition, she proposed to expand the list of exempted capital goods for use in the manufacture of solar cells and panels in the country. Further, she stated that in view of sufficient domestic manufacturing capacity of solar glass and tinned copper interconnect, I propose not to extend the exemption of customs duties provided to them. Noting that steel and copper are important raw materials and to reduce their cost of production, she proposed to remove the BCD on ferro nickel and blister copper. "I am also continuing with nil BCD on ferrous scrap and nickel cathode and concessional BCD of 2.5 per cent on copper scrap," she said. About the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which was rolled out earlier this year, he informed the House that in line with the announcement in the interim budget, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has been launched to install rooftop solar plants to enable 1 crore households obtain free electricity up to 300 units every month. The scheme has generated remarkable response with more than 1.28 crore registrations and 14 lakh applications, and we will further encourage it, he stated. She further stated that a policy for promoting pumped storage projects will be brought out for electricity storage and facilitating smooth integration of the growing share of renewable energy with its variable &amp; intermittent nature in the overall energy mix. She stated that nuclear energy is expected to form a very significant part of the energy mix for Viksit Bharat. Towards that pursuit, our government will partner with the private sector for setting up Bharat Small Reactors; research &amp; development of Bharat Small Modular Reactor and research &amp; development of newer technologies for nuclear energy, she informed the House. The R&amp;D funding announced in the interim budget will be made available for this sector, she added. The development of indigenous technology for Advanced Ultra Super Critical (AUSC) <keyword id="20421620" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="thermal-power" source="keywords">thermal power</keyword> plants with much higher efficiency has been completed, she informed the House. A joint venture between NTPC and BHEL will set up a full-scale 800 MW commercial plant using AUSC technology and the government will provide the required fiscal support, she added. Moving forward, the development of indigenous capacity for the production of high-grade steel and other advanced metallurgy materials for these plants will result in strong spin-off benefits for the economy, she pointed out. A roadmap for moving the 'hard to abate' industries from 'energy efficiency' targets to 'emission targets' will be formulated, she stated adding that appropriate regulations for the transition of these industries from the current 'Perform, Achieve and Trade' mode to 'Indian Carbon Market' mode will be put in place. She further stated that an investment-grade energy audit of traditional micro and small industries in 60 clusters, including brass and ceramic, will be facilitated. Financial support will be provided for shifting them to cleaner forms of energy and implementation of energy efficiency measures. The scheme will be replicated in another 100 clusters in the next phase, she stated. Free solar electricity to mobile nuclear plants — major sustainability initiatives announced in Budget 2024!

AdGreen Energy (<keyword id="4621631" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="agel" source="Orion">AGEL</keyword>), the renewables arm of the Adani Group, on Friday announced that its fourth wind-solar hybrid power plant at Jaisalmer in Rajasthan is fully operational and the asset has been capitalised. The combined operational generation capacity of this newly added hybrid power plant is 700 MW and has a power purchase agreement (PPA) at Rs 3.24/kwh for 25 years, according to a statement from the firm released on Friday. This new hybrid power plant consists of a combination of 600 MW solar and 510 MW wind plants. The company said its latest hybrid plant deploys advanced renewable technologies like bifacial solar PV modules and horizontal single-axis trackers (HSAT) systems to enable maximum electricity generation from solar energy. A bifacial panel can generate power from both sides, boosting overall electricity production. The plant is co-located and is designed to deliver capacity utilisation factor (CUF) of minimum 50 per cent, the highest CUF of any renewable project in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. The firm said the plant harnesses the potential of renewable energy by resolving intermittency of the generation and provides a more reliable solution to meet the rising power demand. With this, AGEL's operating wind-solar hybrid portfolio has now reached 2,140 MW, continuing to be the largest in the world, according to the company statement. With the successful operationalisation of the 700 MW plant, the world's largest wind-solar hybrid power plant, AGEL now has the largest operating renewable portfolio in India with 8,024 MW, <keyword id="4343578" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="adani-green" source="Orion">Adani Green</keyword> said on Friday. The plant is housed under AGEL's 100 per cent subsidiary -- Adani Hybrid Energy Jaisalmer Four Limited. "Earlier in May 2022, AGEL had operationalised India's first hybrid power plant of 390 MW," Adani Green said in the statement, adding that this was followed by the commissioning of the world's largest co-located hybrid power plant of 600 MW in September 2022 and the third hybrid power plant of 450 MW in December 2022. "All three of these hybrid energy generation assets are located in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan." Adani Green says its operating renewable portfolio reaches 8,024 MW, largest in India

New Delhi, Mar 25 () State-owned NTPC on Wednesday announced completion of trial for second unit, of 660 megawatts, of its Khargone Super Thermal Power Project in Madhya Pradesh. "Second unit of 660 MW of Khargone Super Thermal Power Project has been added to installed capacity of NTPC on successful completion of trial operation," NTPC said in a BSE filing. With the addition, the total installed capacity of NTPC and NTPC group has become 50,355 MW and 58,816 MW, respectively. NTPC completes trial of Khargone Super Thermal Power Project's second unit

New Delhi, Feb 1 () Old coal-fired power plants not meeting emission norms will be closed and their land put to alternative use, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Saturday as she provided Rs 4,400 crore in her Budget for measures to ensure clean air.
 She also announced expansion of PM KUSUM scheme for harnessing solar energy by farmers for achieving diesel-free agriculture eventually.
 Besides, the minister indicated in her Budget speech that there would be a new scheme to reduce financial stress of debt-laden power distribution firms and incentives will be provided in form of lower corporate tax for new power projects.
 "There are yet, thermal power plants that are old and their carbon emission levels are high. For such power plants, we propose that utilities running them would be advised to close them, if their emission is above the pre-set norms. The land so vacated can be put to alternative use," Sitharaman said.
 The new scheme would be implemented by environment ministry with an outlay of Rs 4,400 crore.
 "In large cities having population above one million, clean air is a matter of concern. The government proposes to encourage such states that are formulating and implementing plans for ensuring cleaner air in cities above one million. Parameters for the incentives would be notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate change. Allocation for this purpose is Rs 4,400 crore for 2020-21," she said.
 About this initiative of the government, Power Minister R K Singh told reporters that there are certain plants which either do not have space for putting emission control equipment or they simply cannot do that.
 The initiative is expected to nudge states to close all those old thermal power plants and capitalise vacated land.
 The finance minister also proposed to extend the concessional corporate tax rate of 15 per cent to new domestic companies engaged in the generation of electricity in order to attract investment in power sector.
 In September 2019, the government introduced new provision of offering a concessional corporate tax rate of 15 per cent to the newly incorporated domestic companies in the manufacturing sector which start manufacturing by March 31, 2023, for boosting the sector. Now this is extended to new power plants as well.
 "Taking electricity to every household has been a major achievement. However, the distribution sector, particularly the DISCOMS are under financial stress...Further measures to reform DISCOMs would be taken. I propose to provide about Rs 22,000 crore to power and renewable energy sector in 2020-21," she said in her Budget speech.
 The power sector is facing stress due to poor financial conditions of discoms in the country. The government launched Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojana (UDAY) in November 2015 to bring about operational and financial turnaround of debt-laden discoms.
 On this, Singh has said the ministry has a draft scheme for revival of discoms, which would be finalised and sent for Cabinet approval.
 He also said states would have to agree on loss reduction trajectory under the scheme to get financial assistance as well as funding from central PSUs PFC and REC.
 Giving a thrust to clean energy in the Budget, the finance minister also expanded the existing Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM KUSUM) scheme to provide assistance for setting up about 35 lakh solar pumps by farmers.
 "We have provided energy sovereignty through KUSUM.In the Budget speech of July 2019, I had stated that 'annadata' can be 'urjadata' too. The PM-KUSUM scheme removed farmers' dependence on diesel and kerosene and linked pump sets to solar energy," Sitharaman said.
 She proposed to expand the scheme to 20 lakh farmers for setting up stand-alone solar pumps and also help another 15 lakh farmers solarise their grid-connected pump sets.
 The scheme also enables farmers to set up solar power generation capacity and sell it to the grid.
 PM KUSUM scheme was unveiled last year with an outlay of Rs 34,422 crore.
 The scheme has three components-- 10,000 megawatts (MW) of decentralised ground mounted grid-connected renewable power plants ; installation of 17.50 lakh standalone solar powered agriculture pumps and solarisation of 10 lakh grid-connected solar powered agriculture pumps.
 The finance minister also told the House that a scheme to enable farmers to set up solar power generation capacity on their fallow/barren lands and to sell it to the grid would be operationalized under PM KUSUM.
About pre-paid smart electricity meters, she said: "The ministry intends to promote "smart" metering. I urge all the states and Union Territories to replace conventional energy meters by prepaid smart meters in the next 3 years. Also, this would give consumers the freedom to choose the supplier and rate as per their requirement."
 The government has proposed Rs 5,753 crore outlay for new and renewable energy ministry for 2020-21 as against Rs 3,891.74 crore revised estimate for 2019-20. The budget estimate was Rs 5,254.83 crore. KKS ANZ ANU

Budget's push for clean air: Old thermal power plants to shut

New Delhi, Feb 5 () The CISF has taken over the security of a Uttar Pradesh-based supercritical thermal power plant and has deployed over 300 personnel at the facility, a senior official said on Wednesday.The induction of an armed security unit of the force and a separate fire wing took place on Monday at the Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Ltd (NUPPL) located at Ghatampur in Kanpur."310 personnel -- 206 for security duties and 104 as part of the fire wing -- have been deployed at the power plant. The induction took place on February 3," a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) spokesperson said.NUPPL is a joint venture between the Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Ltd (a Union government enterprise) and the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd. It is a coal-based supercritical thermal power plant with a capacity of 1,980 MW."In the light of the increased threat perception to coal-based supercritical thermal power plants situated across the country, NUPPL is inherently vulnerable to threats from anti-nationals," the spokesperson said.The ceremonial induction of the contingent was done by CISF Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Prabodh Chandra and NUPPL CEO K Mohan Reddy.The CISF commandos, under the command of a Deputy Commandant-rank officer, will provide round-the-clock security in a quick response team (QRT) pattern as part of which they will keep vigil from vantage positions at the facility, using sophisticated assault weapons and will have vehicles for swift movement.They will ensure that terror threats to the power plant are kept at bay and thwarted, a senior official said.The special fire unit will secure the facility against any blaze-like incidents.The paramilitary force, with a strength of around 1.62 lakh personnel, is the primary federal force to provide armed security cover to vital installations in the government and private domain of the country, apart from being the national civil aviation protection force.With the latest induction, the force has 347 units to guard in the country, the spokesperson said. UP-based thermal power plant gets CISF security and fire cover

New Delhi, Jan 22 () Power Mech Projects on Wednesday announced that it has bagged orders worth Rs 351 crore from state-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Jaiprakash Power Ventures.
 In a filing to BSE, the company said that it has "received letter of award/work orders for....civil and architectural works of all buildings structures and associated works... for 2x660 mw Maitree Rampal Project, Bangladesh... for a total contract price of Rs 211 crore awarded by BHEL."
 The project is to be completed in 20 months, the filing said.
 The company said that it has also received work order for operation and maintenance services for 1320 mw Jaypee Nigrie Super Thermal Power Plant at Nigrie, Madhya Pradesh, for a period of five years for a total contract price of Rs 140 crore awarded by Jaiprakash Power Ventures.
 The shares of Power Mech Projects were trading at Rs 729.60 apiece on BSE in morning trade, up 1.62 per cent from the previous close. SID ANS
