<ul><li>An internal letter to <keyword id="6360701" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="spacex" source="Orion">SpaceX</keyword> executives raises concerns about the behaviour of CEO <keyword id="6355315" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="elon-musk" source="Orion">Elon Musk</keyword>.</li><li>The letter says that every tweet from Musk is seen as a "de facto public statement by the company."</li><li>The letter also says that the company is not living up to its zero-tolerance sexual harassment policy.</li></ul>SpaceX employees have slammed their CEO Elon Musk's behaviour in the public sphere that is a "frequent source of distraction and embarrassment" for them.<br /><br />In an open letter addressed to company executives, the employees called out Musk's behaviour on Twitter, regarding allegations of sexual harassment against him by a female company employee last month.<br /><br />"As our CEO and most prominent spokesperson, Elon is seen as the face of SpaceX, every Tweet that Elon sends is a de facto public statement by the company. It is critical to make clear to our teams and to our potential talent pool that his messaging does not reflect our work, our mission, or our values," the SpaceX employees wrote.<br /><br />Employees "across the spectra of gender, ethnicity, seniority, and technical roles have collaborated on" writing the letter.<br /><br />Last month, a Business Insider report claimed that Musk allegedly offered to buy a horse to a SpaceX female employee in exchange for an erotic massage and touching "his genitals".<br /><br />"She accused Musk of... rubbing her leg without consent, and offering to buy her a horse in exchange for an erotic massage," the report claimed, quoting interviews and documents.<br /><br />The incident took place in 2016 and was reported in a declaration "signed by a friend of the attendant and prepared in support of her claim".<br /><br />Musk defended himself on Twitter, saying "it was clear that their only goal was a hit price to interfere with the Twitter acquisition. The story was written before they even talked to me".<br /><br />In an email sent to employees, SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell also defended Musk.<br /><br />"Personally, I believe the allegations to be false; not because I work for Elon, but because I have worked closely with him for 20 years and never seen nor heard anything resembling these allegations," Shotwell wrote.<br /><br />The letter by the employees argued that the company is not living up to its zero-tolerance sexual harassment policy.<br /><br />"This must change. Musk's behaviour a source of distraction & embarrassment: SpaceX employees

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Some people are complaining that ChatGPT's new voice is too flirty.</li><li>OpenAI debuted the updated version of the chatbot in a demonstration on Monday.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-chat-gpt-2023-1">ChatGPT</a> has found its voice — but not everyone appears to like it.</p><p>On Monday, OpenAI debuted a new AI model named <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-openai-chatgpt-flirty-cringe-update-gpt4-2024-5?mrfhud=true">GPT-4o</a>, which uses native audio inputs and outputs. When integrated into ChatGPT, users can have human-like conversations with the bot, speaking to it and showing it things.</p><p>The result is like having a futuristic <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-gpt4o-launch-ai-new-best-friend-sam-altman-chatgpt-2024-5">AI best friend</a> — or girlfriend — in your pocket.</p><p>The update quickly sparked parallels to Spike Jonze's 2013 film "Her," which portrays a writer, played by Joaquin Phoenix, falling in love with an artificial-intelligence system, voiced by Scarlett Johansson. Some have even said the chatbot's new voice sounds like Johansson's.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/sama/status/1790075827666796666?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet">Sam Altman</a> appeared to weigh in on the social-media chatter in an X post, possibly citing the film as an inspiration for ChatGPT's new voice. The OpenAI CEO has previously said that Jonze's film is one of his favorites and that it's "<a target="_blank" href="https://sfstandard.com/2023/09/12/sam-altman-dreamforce-2023/">incredibly prophetic</a>."</p><p>Some users, however, have already been complaining that the voice is overly sexualized and flirty. One X user quipped:</p><p>Unsurprisingly, <a target="_blank" rel="" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk"><u>Elon Musk</u></a> led some of the criticism, saying the demo made him "cringe" and commenting on a few posts about the bot's sexual tone.</p><p>The billionaire does have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-elon-musk-openai-lawsuit-fight-2024-3">personal beef with OpenAI</a> and its CEO, but he was far from the only one to be weirded out by ChatGPT's new voice.</p><p>"I imagine the least interesting use of GPT-4o is emulating an uncomfortably flirtatious, mildly condescending woman who you have to actively interrupt if you want to get a word in edgeways," the designer <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/mappletons/status/1790349315631718498?s=46">Maggie Appleton</a> said on X.</p><p>Another X user said the bot's voice resembled a "<a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/cassiecodes/status/1790330792075280861?s=46">female character as written by men</a>," calling it a "mega ick."</p><p>Several others, including the New York Times tech columnist <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/kevinroose/status/1790083946119835705?s=46">Kevin Roose</a>, urged AI bosses to watch all of Jonze's film, which (spoiler alert) does not have a happy ending.</p>

OpenAI's flirty new GPT-4o is giving some people the ick

Reception of the album as a whole has been <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/08/arts/music/review-dr-dre-compton.html?_r=0">good</a>, but some of the content has been highly criticized.<p>Eminem is in a bit of a muk after performing&#xa0;a lyric on the album that many think is insensitive to victims of rape.</p><p>During the song "Medicine Man,"&#xa0;he's heard rapping the line "<span>Ain't no one safe from, non-believers there ain't none. I even make the b------ I rape c--."</span></p><p><span><span>Karen Ingala Smith, chief executive of&#xa0;</span><a href="http://www.niaendingviolence.org.uk/" class=" u-underline" data-link-name="in body link" data-component="in-body-link">Nia Project</a>, a charity that fights&#xa0;violence against women and children,&#xa0;told The Guardian<span>&#xa0;the Eminem&#xa0;line was damaging to the culture.</span></span></p><p><span><span>"<span>Women and girls who have suffered sexual violence often blame themselves or question whether they were really raped," she said. His 2011 song "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-OmrPbzpLg">Kill you</a>" alludes to some eye-popping&#xa0;lyrics, most notably ones highly criticized for their demeaning nature against women. People are furious over Eminem's disturbing rap lyric about rape

Marco Rubio (R-Florida) "can't even look me in the eye" while taking shots at his political career during Thursday's GOP debate.<p>"Last night, with the shots being taken at me, and the person taking the shots can't even look me in the eye," Christie <a href="http://www.msnbc.com/morning-joe/watch/christie-rubio-can-t-even-look-me-in-the-eye-602362947740">said Friday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe.</a>"</p><p>He added: "Um, that's not what voters want to see. They want to see you look somebody in the eye and that's what we do every time."</p><p>Host Joe Scarborough then asked whom Christie was referencing.</p><p>"Sen. Rubio," the governor replied.</p><p>He was also pressed on <a href="http://video.foxnews.com/v/4706429212001/christie-shows-support-to-americas-cops-during-gop-debate-/?playlist_id=930909787001#sp=show-clips">"Fox &amp; Friends"</a> about Rubio's accusations that he had previously supported Planned Parenthood, Supreme Court Justice's Sonia Sotomayor's appointment, and the Common Core curriculum in New Jersey.</p><p>"Well listen, when you just make stuff up, there's no reason to get upset about it," Christie said.</p><p><a href="http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2016/01/from_the_archives_chris_christie_says_he_supports.html">The Newark Star-Ledger</a> wrote in separate instances that Christie supported both Planned Parenthood and <a href="http://www.nj.com/politics/index.ssf/2016/01/fact_checking_christie_in_6th_gop_presidential_deb.html">Sotomayor's appointment</a>.</p><p>"You guys should really shred the Star-Ledger by now. ... Twitter users have hopped on the hashtag <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23ActForTheAmazon&amp;src=trend_click">#ActForTheAmazon</a> (which was created on August 21 to bring awareness to the crisis), steering it directly to Bezos and begging he use his fortune to help end the crisis.</p><p>Bezos' multi-billion-dollar company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-that-used-to-have-completely-different-names-2019-8">gets its name from the Amazon river</a>, which winds its way through the South American rainforest. Incidentally, the company also produces the Fire TV and the Fire tablet. This has led to some <a href="https://qz.com/1692755/amazon-fire-tablet-upstages-amazon-rainforest-fires-on-google/">confusion on Google News</a>, when people searching for the reports on the crisis found Amazon products instead.</p><p>As of this writing, Bezos has not publicly commented on the fires. Twitter users have hopped on a viral hashtag to ask Jeff Bezos of Amazon (the company) to help save the Amazon (the burning rainforest)

<p>After an&#xa0;advertisement in California sparked controversy online over what a female engineer "should look like," women around the world have joined forces to&#xa0;fight gender stereotypes using the hashtag #ILookLikeAnEngineer.&#xa0;</p><p>The ad, a promo for tech security company <a href="https://www.onelogin.com/">OneLogin</a>, features 22-year-old Isis Anchalee, who works for the company as a&#xa0;<span>full-stack engineer, <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2015/08/03/ilooklikeanengineer-aims-to-spread-awareness-about-gender-diversity-in-tech/#.lwhtwf:Cs3p">Tech Crunch reported</a>. The person at the bottom is for scale.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/spacex" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SpaceX</a> is designing a new rocket ship, called <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/starship" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Starship</a>, to send about 100 people to Mars at a time.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/elon-musk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Elon Musk</a>, the rocket company's founder, said on Twitter that Starship could be 10 times cheaper than the least-expensive rocket today.</li><li>Musk added he is "confident" Starship may be cheap enough for most people to "sell their home on Earth &amp; move to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/mars" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mars</a> if they want."</li></ul><p>Elon Musk is trying to make it a no-brainer for you to move to Mars.</p><p>Musk, the founder of SpaceX, shared his thinking on cost-effective space travel on Twitter over the weekend.</p><p>"I'm confident moving to Mars ... will one day cost less than $500k &amp; maybe even below $100k," Musk <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1094796246613516289" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweeted</a> on Sunday, "low enough that most people in advanced economies could sell their home on Earth &amp; move to Mars if they want."</p><p>He added that if anyone decides they don't like Mars (there are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mars-colonization-human-survival-radiation-food-biosphere-2018-4">plenty of reasons to hate it</a>), a "return ticket is free."</p><p>The comments came after Muk revealed new details about his rocket company's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-raptor-mars-moon-rocket-engine-blast-videos-2019-2">truck-size rocket engine, called Raptor</a>, and the launch system it'd propel to the moon and Mars, called Starship.</p><p>On Sunday, Musk <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1094788783331897344" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> the Raptor engine has been fired more than half a dozen times at a SpaceX facility in McGregor, Texas. He also shared technical data from those tests, including the engine's <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1094789114258313216" target="_blank" rel="noopener">efficiency</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1094791972944920582" target="_blank" rel="noopener">chamber pressure</a>, other <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1094782854007910400" target="_blank" rel="noopener">details</a>.</p><p>Raptor engines are crucial to making Starship work. Up to six of the engines will power the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-big-falcon-rocket-size-comparison-elon-musk-2018-10">roughly 18-story Starship</a>. Meanwhile, the system's 22-story rocket booster, called Super Heavy, may use up to 31 Raptor engines.</p><p>SpaceX plans to fix the first Raptor engines onto a "test hopper" prototype at a site near Brownsville, Texas, then launch it on short "hops" up to a few miles high.</p><h2>How Musk plans to make space travel cheap with Starship</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.spacex.com/mars">SpaceX</a></span></p><p class="caption">An illustration of spaceships of SpaceX's Big Falcon Rocket system, or BFR, helping colonize Mars.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Musk's ultimate goal for <span>the future of Starship and SpaceX is to enable human life on Mars. He </span>began sharing that vision in 2015, saying he wants to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-mars-colonies-human-survival-2015-10">back up the human race like hard drive</a> in case something terrible befalls Earth.</p><p>Since then, Musk has worked toward replacing SpaceX's mainstay rocket, called <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-falcon-9-commercial-rocket-record-most-launches-2018-12">Falcon 9</a>, with a larger yet dramatically lower-cost system. (Currently, that's Starship, though it has gone by other names - most recently "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/big-falcon-rocket" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Big Falcon Rocket</a>.")</p><p>"This will sound implausible, but I think there's a path to build Starship / Super Heavy for less than Falcon 9," Musk said.</p><p>SpaceX currently charges about $62 million per launch of a Falcon 9 rocket, which can carry up to 25 tons of payload into low-Earth orbit. On Sunday, Musk <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1094797169565921280" target="_blank" rel="noopener">predicted</a> that Starship would be "at least 10X cheaper" to send up the same <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-rocket-cargo-price-by-weight-2016-6">mass of payload</a>.</p><p>Starship is designed to take about 100 tons of cargo and 100 people to Mars. Part of the reason Musk expects it to be so cost-effective is the system's size - launching more at once can lower costs.</p><p>But the biggest reason Starship could be so much cheaper is that it's designed to be <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-reusable-rocket-launch-costs-profits-2017-6">fully reusable</a>. This prevents losing multi-million-dollar hardware after a single use (a typical practice in the rocket-launch industry) and limits launch costs to refilling fuel and refurbishing parts. Starship's reusability may also allow it to refuel on liquid methane and oxygen once it has landed on Mars (Musk says this fuel can be manufactured on the red planet's surface) for a return trip to Earth.</p><p>Musk also confirmed on Sunday that a recent and "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-says-radical-change-coming-to-spacexs-mars-rocket-design-2018-11">radical</a>" shift in the design of Starship will be a "<a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1094794147980931073" target="_blank" rel="noopener">big factor</a>" in keeping costs down. Musk <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1091148397443084289" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweeted</a> in January that using steel could counterintuitively make Starship lighter, allowing it to carry more cargo at a time.</p><p>SpaceX's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-spacex-mars-plan-timeline-2018-10">"aspirational" goal</a> is to launch the first cargo mission to Mars in 2022 - just three years from now. Then in 2023, Musk hopes to send Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa and a crew of artists <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-moon-mission-passenger-bfr-big-falcon-rocket-2018-9">on a trip around the moon</a>. Elon Musk says he is 'confident' people could afford to 'sell their home on Earth' and move to Mars on a SpaceX rocket

It's currently available to read for free.</p><p>"You want to wake up in the morning and think the future is going to be great - and that's what being a spacefaring civilization is all about," reads the beginning of the study. "It's about believing in the future and thinking that the future will be better than the past. And I can't think of anything more exciting than going out there and being among the stars."</p><p>If that line sounds familiar, that's because it comes from Musk's October 2017 <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-iac-mars-colonization-presentation-2017-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">presentation</a> to the International Astronautical Congress.</p><p>In fact, the entire study closely follows that talk, though some new details and images have been added. Musk followed the same process after he debuted his <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-mars-speech-transcript-2016-9">preliminary Mars colonization plans</a> at the IAC in September 2016 - he later published <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-mars-colony-details-new-space-study-2017-6">a 2017 paper</a> outlining those plans in New Space.</p><p>Here are the highlights from Musk's latest academic study.</p><h2>How Musk hopes to make like multi-planetary with SpaceX</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>During his 42-minute talk, Musk elaborated on SpaceX's plans to build a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/reusable-rockets-musk-bezos-space-colonies-2017-3">fully reusable</a> system known as the BFR, Big Falcon Rocket, or - as Musk often calls it - the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-elon-musk-competition-companies-rockets-2018-3">Big F---ing Rocket</a>" (a name that's conspicuously absent from his New Space paper).</p><p>The 348-foot-tall system will have two main parts: a 191-foot-tall reusable rocket booster and a 157-foot-tall reusable spaceship. The spaceship is being designed to carry 100 people or 140,000 lbs into low-Earth orbit.</p><p>As Musk explained in his new study and presentation, the spaceship can be refilled with fuel while in orbit, then fired off to the moon, Mars, or somewhere else in the solar system.</p><p>SpaceX's first missions to Mars would come in 2022 and 2024, according to Muks's plan - though he has emphasized that the timeline is "aspirational."</p><p>"People have told me that my timelines, historically, have been optimistic," Musk said at SXSW.</p><p>The first trip in 2022 would drop off equipment made to harvest water and carbon dioxide from the air and convert it into methane using solar energy. That fuel would be stored in depots to refill Earth-bound BFRs. Publishers</a></span></p><p class="caption">A diagram showing how SpaceX plans to establish a base and methane-fueling depot on Mars.</p></div><p></p></div></div><p>Musk has yet to explain the details of how he'd keep anyone alive on the moon or red planet, though he addressed that process in very general terms <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-elon-musk-launched-tesla-mars-falcon-heavy-2018-3">during a conversation earlier this month</a> at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas.</p><p>"It will start off building just the most elementary infrastructure, just a base to create some propellant, a power station, blast domes in which to grow crops - all of the sort of fundamentals without which you cannot survive," Musk said. "And then really there's gonna be an explosion of entrepreneurial opportunity, because Mars will need everything from iron foundries to pizza joints. I think Mars should really have great bars: the Mars Bar."</p><h2>Musk is not joking</h2><p>&#xa0;</p><p>After a successful <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/falcon-heavy-spacex-epic-rocket-launch-in-person-2018-2">test-launch of Spacex's Falcon Heavy</a> - the world's most powerful operational rocket system - Musk <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/falcon-heavy-space-race-elon-musk-spacex-blue-origin-2018-2">called for a new space race</a>. Joining SpaceX in its space-exploration efforts is a growing list of competing companies and government agencies scrambling to develop <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-elon-musk-competition-companies-rockets-2018-3">their own reusable, lower-cost launch systems</a>.</p><p>But SpaceX is for now ahead of the pack. The company recently applied to take over an 18-acre site in the Port of Los Angeles, which is 14 miles south of its Hawthorne, California headquarters. The goal appears to be the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-big-falcon-rocket-bfr-facility-los-angeles-photos-2018-3">construction of a factory that will build the first BFR spaceships</a>.</p><p>Musk has said SpaceX plans to test-launch the first spaceship on short "up-and-down flights" before the summer of 2019. This will likely occur at SpaceX's remote facility in McGregor, Texas.</p><p>Around the same time SpaceX begins to reach for Mars, Musk may start using BFRs to establish <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-spacex-bfr-cities-rapid-transportation-2017-10">a high-speed transportation system for Earth</a>. In theory, a BFR flight could take a person from Los Angeles to New York in 25 minutes.</p><p>The rocket rides may be costly and uncomfortable for passengers, but <a href="http://www.leroychiao.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leroy Chiao</a>, a former NASA astronaut, previously told Business Insider that he doesn't doubt Musk's resolve.</p><p>"This would not be for the faint of heart, and it is difficult to see how this would be inexpensive," he added. Elon Musk has published a new study about his ambitious plans to colonize Mars with SpaceX

However, it quickly escalated into another issue that set Twitter on fire. </p><h2>Shots Are Fired</h2><p>Meek Mill went after Drake, claiming the latter doesn't write his own songs. Mill gained over 110,000 retweets and 80,000 favorites in the process. </p><h2>Context</h2><p>Drake was featured on a song called "R.I.C.O" on Mill's latest album, <em><a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/dreams-worth-more-than-money/id1011549230">Dreams Are Worth More Than Money</a></em>, which was released on June 29th.</p><p></p><p>Supposedly, at least in Mill's mind, Drake didn't spread the news about the new album because of this newly unveiled knowledge...</p><p></p><p>The lyrics on the guest verse, although allegedly not written by Drake himself, touched some nerves for Mill in regards to his relationship with girlfriend Nicki Minaj.</p><h2>Nicki Minaj &amp; Drake</h2><p>In Nicki Minaj's <em>Anaconda</em> video that came out last year (which was was just nominated for Best Female Video and Best Hip Hop Video in MTV's Music Video Awards), Minaj had some "intimate" moments with Drake. The two have had <a href="http://www.capitalxtra.com/artists/drake/lists/nicki-minaj-relationship-history/">rumored romantic history</a> as well. It's spread since and doesn't help the PR for MMG's label.</p><p></p><h2>"If I'm going down, I'm bringing everyone else with me"</h2><p>Mill had no hesitancy in keeping this argument just between him and Drake, which could escelate to some further problems and drama.</p><p> Jay-Z's name was even thrown into the ring. It represents a key step in company founder Elon Musk's quest to send people <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-elon-musk-moon-landing-nasa-cfo-jeff-dewit-2019-7">to the moon</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mars-colonization-human-survival-radiation-food-biosphere-2018-4">Mars</a>, though Starhopper isn't designed to fly into space. Instead, it's a test bed for technologies that could eventually power a much larger and more powerful launch system known as Starship.</p><p>Though it was difficult to see the hop through the smoke, Starhopper appeared to move, and Musk confirmed on Twitter that the flight was "successful." The launch did appear to start a brush fire that was still being contained nearly a half hour after the launch (at the time of writing).</p><p>Musk envisions Starship as a nearly 400-foot-tall, fully reusable system that can ferry about 100 people and more than 100 tons of cargo at a time to Mars.</p><p>&#xa0;</p><p>Starhopper, meanwhile, stands more than 60 feet tall and about 30 feet wide, has three landing legs, and is made out of stainless steel. This, he says, may <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-reusable-rocket-launch-costs-profits-2017-6">reduce launch costs</a> by 100- to 1,000-fold compared to traditional, single-use rockets.</p><p>"Full and rapid reusability is the holy grail of access to space and is a fundamental step towards it, without which we cannot become a multi-planet species," Musk recently told Time's Jeffrey Kluger in <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/extended-transcript-spacex-ceo-elon-musk-on-putting-boots-on-the-moon-and-mars/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an interview</a> for CBS Sunday Morning. "We cannot have a base on the moon, we cannot have a city on Mars without full and rapid reusability."</p><p>But getting to that stage will likely require years of testing, and Wednesday's launch was a crucial first step.</p><h2>A hard-won hop-and-hover flight</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>SpaceX began constructing Starhopper near <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-elon-musk-texas-starship-mars-launch-site-pictures-2019-5">Boca Chica Village</a>, Texas around November 2018. Musk <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-spacex-steel-test-hopper-starship-texas-2019-1">showed off</a> the vehicle in January, and then SpaceX <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-test-hopper-starhopper-first-raptor-engine-static-fire-2019-4">launched it on its first "hops"</a> (as Musk calls them) in early April.</p><p>Those initial tests anchored the rocket ship to the ground via huge chains on its legs, so Starhopper lifted no more than a few feet into the air.</p><p>On Wednesday, there was a failed launch attempt around 8:32 p.m. ET (7:32 p.m. CT). Just seconds after ignition, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-starhopper-rocket-test-flight-abort-video-webcast-2019-7">the vehicle's engine abruptly shut down</a>. The launch on Thursday, however, was deemed a success.</p><p><span>"It appears as though we have had an abort on today's test," Kate Tice, certification engineer at SpaceX, said during <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqUSRBJPYUE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a live broadcast</a>. "As you can see there, the vehicle did not lift off."</span></p><p><span>But SpaceX rallied and tried again on Thursday.</span></p><p>Amid a blast of sand and rocket-engine exhaust, Starhopper flew about about 65 feet (20 meters) into the air at around 11:45 p.m. ET (10:45 p.m. CT). Critically, the engine burned liquid methane, which makes up most natural gas on Earth and is also a fuel Musk <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-mars-speech-transcript-2016-9">hopes to manufacture on Mars</a>.</p><h2>What's in store for Starhopper and Starship</h2><p>SpaceX's <a href="https://apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/els/reports/442_Print.cfm?mode=current&amp;application_seq=88513&amp;license_seq=89439">current government license</a> permits the company to launch experimental vehicles like Starhopper on flights lasting no more than six minutes and up to a maximum altitude of 3.1 miles (5 kilometers).</p><p>However, the company is now building a roughly 180-foot-tall (55-meter-tall) prototype, called Starship Mark 1, which Musk says could fly from Texas or Florida in two to three months and <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1152369004314419201">reach orbit</a> by the end of the year.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Musk <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1107370515570671616">tweeted</a> in March that SpaceX is "working on regulatory approval" for orbital flights of those prototypes, which will have three Raptor engines each instead of one.</p><p>SpaceX plans to launch a full-scale Starship before the end of 2020. <ul class="summary-list"><li>I tried 17 different flavors of Peeps and ranked them all from worst to best. </li><li>The chocolate-pudding and party-cake flavored Peeps did not impress me. </li></ul><p>Peeps are a treat that people seem to either hate or love, but I've got <a href="https://www.insider.com/i-ate-all-of-the-m-and-m-flavors-review-ranking">mixed feelings depending on the flavor</a>.  </p><p><a href="https://www.foodandwine.com/news/history-peeps">According to Food and Wine</a>, these marshmallows have roots in the 1940s as an unnamed treat. It once took about 80 people to make a limited amount during Easter and 27 hours to create one tray.</p><p>I was skeptical that this process was ever worth it but was also excited to be proven otherwise. </p><p>As a writer for Insider, Just Born sent me several flavors of Peeps, with the exception of the sparkly wild berry ones, to taste test. Although most of the products were free for reviewing purposes, a typical package usually costs under $3. </p><p>Keep reading to see how I ranked these sugary chicks and bunnies in descending order from my least-favorite to my top pick.</p><h2><strong>Chocolate-pudding flavored Peeps </strong></h2><div type="image" title="chocolate pudding peeps" height="2772" width="3696" msid="81555740" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>First impression</strong>: The chocolate-marshmallow combination is basically the hallmark of Easter, but this bunny looked off. </p><p>I've yet to find a convincing chocolate-pudding flavored candy, so I was <a href="https://www.insider.com/salted-caramel-milky-way-compared-to-simply-original-taste-test-2019-10">open to the possibility of this one</a> being good but didn't expect it.</p><div type="image" title="chocolate pudding peeps" height="2803" width="3737" msid="81555745" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Review:</strong> This choice was fine, but the chocolate taste seemed diluted and reminded me of <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-use-protein-powder-2018-10">protein powder</a>. I didn't mind it, but I didn't love it either. </p><h2><strong>Peeps Filled Delights in chocolate-caramel swirl </strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="peeps chocolate caramel delights" height="2784" width="3711" msid="81555747" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>First impression: </strong>This option smelled like unmixed hot-cocoa powder, so I figured it'd be not great <a href="https://www.insider.com/trader-joes-fan-favorite-cheese-review-unexpected-cheddar">or absolutely delicious</a>. </p><p>In addition to doubting the chocolate coating, I also expected the caramel filling to result in a gooey center that would feel out of place. </p><div type="image" title="peep chocolate caramel delight" height="2601" width="3468" msid="81555751" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Review</strong>: In addition to looking like the melting-sludge Pokémon (Muk), this one had too much going on.</p><p>The caramel center lacked flavor, yet <a href="https://www.insider.com/easy-way-to-make-oreo-waffles-tiktok-reviewed-photos">was extremely sweet</a>. And paired with the bottom chocolate layer, this conglomeration was just too much.  </p><h2><strong>Party-cake flavored Peeps</strong></h2><div type="image" title="party cake peeps" height="2440" width="3254" msid="81555754" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>First impression</strong>: I really hate birthday cake — like, a lot. I also hate birthdays, but that's a different story. </p><p>Luckily, I like frosting, and that's what I expected this flavor would be. Yet the silence was deafening as the marshmallow bird stared me down.</p><div type="image" title="party cake peeps" height="3024" width="4032" msid="81555755" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Review</strong>: I didn't actually know what to make of this option, as it almost tasted like the prepackaged frosting <a href="https://www.insider.com/easy-ways-to-make-boxed-cake-mix-better-2018-7">you'd slap on a cake</a> at the last second. </p><p>So it was better than expected, but only because the flavor wasn't robust. It was far more like the original Peeps than anything else but still not quite as good. </p><h2><strong>Hot Tamales Fierce Cinnamon Peeps</strong></h2><div type="image" title="hot tamale peeps" height="2534" width="3379" msid="81555758" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>First impression</strong>: Cinnamon was probably the last flavor I expected to see paired with marshmallow. I figured it could work but almost didn't care — I was <a href="https://www.insider.com/i-tried-every-pancake-at-ihop-ranking-2020-2">just excited to see what these tasted like</a>. </p><p>Props to Peeps for going for it, too. So far, I had mostly tasted unsurprising flavors, but this one gave me pause.</p><div type="image" title="hot tamale peeps" height="3024" width="4032" msid="81555759" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Review: </strong>This choice tasted way less exciting than I expected it would and was far less spicy than a real Hot Tamale. It felt more like licking <a href="https://www.insider.com/lil-xan-hot-cheetos-hospital-2018-9">a hot-chips bag</a> than anything else. </p><p>But I also didn't want more heat. A spicy marshmallow, albeit funny, doesn't really appeal to me.</p><p>This option was OK and definitely not the worst. So honestly, I'm glad I had it. And even though I'll award extra points for effort, I probably won't eat these again. </p><h2><strong>Peeps Delights dipped in milk chocolate</strong></h2><div type="image" title="chocolate dipped peeps" height="2630" width="3507" msid="81555761" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>First impression: </strong>This one seemed like two-thirds <a href="https://www.insider.com/review-stuffed-puffs-vs-marshmallows-and-chocolate-2019-6">of a s'more</a>.</p><p>I was hoping the milk chocolate would add depth to the marshmallow flavor, but I assumed it would just taste like a chocolaty Peep. </p><div type="image" title="chocolate dipped tweet" height="2707" width="3609" msid="81555763" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Review:</strong> I was right — it tasted like Peeps and chocolate, which was good, but I'd rather have a plain chick. </p><p>The chocolate felt a little cheap, but it cut the sweetness like I hoped it would. So if you like the inside of a s'more, <a href="https://www.insider.com/trying-best-air-fryer-chicken-recipe-to-make-review-photos">you'll likely enjoy this one</a>. </p><h2><strong>Fruit-punch flavored Peeps</strong></h2><div type="image" title="fruit punch peeps" height="2736" width="3648" msid="81555765" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>First impression</strong>: I liked this option's deep-red color <a href="https://www.insider.com/which-famous-chef-has-the-best-brownies-test-review-2019-12">and creamy inside</a>, plus it smelled quite fruity.</p><p>I knew this flavor was either going to be delicious or outright bizarre-tasting, kind of like fruit punch itself. </p><div type="image" title="fruit punch peeps" height="2966" width="3955" msid="81555768" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Review:</strong> These were pretty <a href="https://www.insider.com/cookbook-review-mountain-dew-grilled-cheese-cupcakes-cocktails-2020">weird-tasting but not necessarily in a bad way</a>. Still, I felt like I was wiping red drink off my face at Chuck E. Cheese.</p><p>Plus what I suspected was a sweet-cherry flavor didn't feel very "Easter" to me — I'd rather have regular Peeps or chocolate. </p><h2><strong>Strawberry Delights dipped in c</strong><strong>rème fudge</strong></h2><div type="image" title="strawberry peeps" height="2642" width="3523" msid="81555774" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>First impression</strong>: This Peep looked too real. If I squinted, I could imagine it sitting on a Tootsie Roll branch. </p><p>That said, this flavor smelled like <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-make-ice-cream-taste-better-at-home">store-brand strawberry ice cream</a>, and I anticipated it would be delicious.</p><div type="image" title="strawberry peeps" height="2812" width="3750" msid="81555775" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Review:</strong> The fudgy bottom went better with this Peep than the others but it still wasn't my thing, especially because the strawberry was sweet enough to carry the whole snack. </p><p>Unfortunately, the fruity flavor was also subtle, making it difficult to taste before the crème overpowered it. </p><h2><strong>Raspberry Delights dipped in c</strong><strong>rème fudge</strong></h2><div type="image" title="raspberry peeps" height="3024" width="4032" msid="81555777" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>First impression: </strong>At first glance, I thought this was an interesting combination. I love raspberries and cream, but the fudge left me skeptical. </p><p>These also really smelled like berries, the sweet kind that <a href="https://www.insider.com/skittles-halloween-flavor-rotten-zombie-2019-8">you'd find mimicked in a candy</a> filling. </p><div type="image" title="raspberry peeps" height="2476" width="3302" msid="81555783" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Review:</strong> In this case, the pieces were better than the whole. </p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/trying-chocolate-lava-cake-recipes-with-photos">The fudge was creamy</a> but didn't go well with the rest of the Peep — it was like someone dumped several marshmallows in my yogurt. </p><p>I would have preferred just the raspberry flavor, which was sweet and actually worked well with the marshmallow. </p><h2><strong>Coconut Delights dipped in dark chocolate</strong></h2><div type="image" title="coconut peep delights" height="3024" width="4032" msid="81555786" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>First impression:</strong> I opened the bag and got a powerful whiff of coconut. For some reason I can't logically explain, that smell pairs well with Easter for me. </p><div type="image" title="coconut peep" height="2419" width="3225" msid="81555790" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Review: </strong>This one was very good, even if it tasted a bit watered-down.</p><p>Chocolate and coconut is an impossible pairing to mess up, so this Peep's simplicity worked in its favor.</p><p>But as I ate this option, I noticed <a href="https://www.insider.com/trying-the-tik-tok-trick-to-make-cookies-better">it had a somewhat strange consistency</a> and realized most coconut products have actual flakes, which then threw off the rest of my eating experience. </p><h2><strong>Root-beer-float flavored Peeps </strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="root beer peeps" height="2584" width="3446" msid="81555793" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>First impression:</strong> I was most excited for this one because I love root beer and thought it would go really well with the marshmallow base. </p><p>Then I remembered I know a few people who hate root beer, which made me realize that <a href="https://www.insider.com/trying-everything-on-the-white-castle-breakfast-menu-review-photos">the business of food reviewing</a> basically stands on my personal opinion. And to think, this whole time I figured my palate deserved a pedestal.  </p><div type="image" title="root beer peeps" height="3024" width="4032" msid="81555798" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Review:</strong> This option was good but also disappointing. It seemed like a tried (and failed) attempt to mimic the carbonated sweetness of soda, in turn reminding me of a flat root beer. </p><p>Still, there <a href="https://www.insider.com/trying-trader-joes-best-dips-review-photos">was a nice depth to the flavor</a> that enhanced the marshmallow base instead of overpowering it. </p><h2><strong>Sour-watermelon flavored Peeps </strong></h2><div type="image" title="sour watermelon peeps" height="2728" width="3638" msid="81555809" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>First impression:</strong> This option strongly smelled of watermelon, but I was doubtful it would actually be sour. But if I was proven wrong, I predicted this could be a top flavor.</p><p>I also appreciated the pink interior and heart-like shape, which added up to create a happy treat. </p><div type="image" title="sour watermelon peeps" height="2678" width="3571" msid="81555816" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Review:</strong> The sour-watermelon Peeps were fascinating. They definitely had a strong, juicy watermelon flavor, but I wasn't sure it fit with the marshmallow's lightness. </p><p>Still, this option ended up as one of my favorites once I stopped thinking of it as a Peep and instead as a dupe for a chewy watermelon <a href="https://www.insider.com/vegan-halloween-candy-2018-10">Jolly Rancher</a>.</p><h2>Sparkly wild berry Peeps</h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Sparkly wild berry Peeps on a table" height="5614" width="7486" msid="99306314" hostid="261" sizebytes="989808"></div><strong><br /></strong><p><strong>First Impression:</strong> I noticed the packaging was decorated with images of a strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, and pomegranate, and I got a whiff of a berry-medley fragrance when I opened the package. It was overpowering, but I couldn't tell right away if that was good or bad.</p><p>In the past, I've appreciated the fruity Peeps flavors since I think they often work better than the brand's chocolate options. I thought the sparkly wild berry Peeps should be fine, but my hopes weren't the highest. It seemed more like a gimmick than a great new flavor. </p><div type="image" title="A light-purple sparkly wild berry Peep on a plate" height="4447" width="5930" msid="99306316" hostid="261" sizebytes="227282"></div><p><strong>Review:</strong> I actually immensely enjoyed the sparkly wild berry Peeps. I appreciated that the taste was just as robust as the smell, which isn't always the case with candy. The berry medley had an unmistakable twang, like a bullfrog on a hot summer night.</p><p>I'd certainly buy these again next season, and if I found one in a little plastic egg, I'd be pleased.</p><h2><strong>Peeps rainbow pop</strong></h2><div type="image" title="rainbow peep pop" height="2217" width="2956" msid="81555821" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>First impression</strong>: I was pretty sure these would turn out to just be regular Peeps, but if I was wrong, I promised myself I'd eat my hat. </p><div type="image" title="rainbow peep pops" height="3024" width="4032" msid="81555825" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Review: </strong>No hats were eaten in the making of <a href="https://www.insider.com/eating-all-of-the-burgers-on-wendys-menu-review-photos">this taste test</a><strong> — </strong>these were just like regular Peeps. </p><p>Plus the fact that they were on a stick made me feel like I needed to eat the whole thing, which I didn't appreciate. I prefer the illusion of control that comes with having a box. </p><h2><strong>Individually wrapped egg-hunt Peeps </strong></h2><div type="image" title="egg hunt peeps" height="3024" width="4032" msid="81555832" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>First impression: </strong>The same but different — a Peeps story. </p><div type="image" title="egg hunt peeps" height="2613" width="3484" msid="81555840" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Review: </strong>I almost skipped this option but am <a href="https://www.insider.com/review-ranking-all-most-popular-entenmanns-snacks">glad I reviewed it</a>. These Peeps were slightly different than the original ones, and if my math (read: my palate) was correct, each one had a greater sugar-to-marshmallow ratio. </p><p>That was an important distinction that ultimately swung my opinion.</p><p>I liked these a little less than the regular-sized ones, but that could've been a result of my stubborn nature clinging to tradition.</p><h2><strong>Original Peeps</strong></h2><div type="image" title="original peeps" height="2880" width="3840" msid="81555844" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>First impression</strong>: The Peeps that started them all. Did we need any more flavors after this one? I really didn't know but figured we'd find out. </p><p>I have fond memories of eating too many Peeps and going into a sugar blackout, so there was a chance history would repeat itself, and I'd eat all 10. </p><p>Additionally, because the chicks and bunnies taste the same, I only reviewed the former — a sentence I never thought I'd find myself typing.</p><div type="image" title="original peeps" height="2928" width="3903" msid="81555851" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Review: </strong>The thing that makes Peeps so good is their ability to be light and sugary at the same time, which is a combination that doesn't actually come around as often as you'd think. </p><p>The marshmallow wasn't in-your-face sweet, which I can't say about the yellow sugar, but <a href="https://www.insider.com/tasting-every-goldfish-cracker-flavor-ranking-them">it's still hard to beat this classic</a> since it's so simple and perfectly sized. </p><div type="image" title="blue peeps" height="2728" width="3638" msid="81555854" hostid="261"></div><p><strong><em>Author's Note</em></strong><em>: Lucien tried to review the other color Peeps but failed miserably. </em><em>He sat at his desk for hours, pulling his hair out and attempting to distinguish red dye from blue dye with his taste buds — it didn't work. </em></p><p><em>Eventually, he gave up, laid down on his couch, and began shoveling Peeps into his mouth. </em></p><h2><strong>Cotton-candy flavored Peeps</strong></h2><div type="image" title="cotton candy peeps" height="2832" width="3775" msid="81555860" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>First impression: </strong>This one could've really gone either way since <a href="https://www.insider.com/photos-cakes-made-from-cotton-candy-how-to-order">cotton candy</a> and marshmallow are in the same boat as far as processed desserts go. </p><p>Intrigued but pessimistic, I was more than willing to be proven wrong. </p><div type="image" title="peeps cotton candy" height="2832" width="3775" msid="81555864" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Review:</strong> As far as Peeps go, these were fantastic. I actually wanted another. I enjoyed this flavor more than I thought I would, as it tasted like drinking cotton-candy milk.</p><p>With <a href="https://www.insider.com/review-favorite-hot-chocolate-recipes-from-popular-chefs-taste-test">well-blended flavors and a smooth texture</a>, these Peeps gave me every reason to place them above the original ones. </p><h2><strong>Froot Loops Peeps pop</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Froot Loops peeps" height="2457" width="3276" msid="81555869" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>First impression</strong>: I was unnaturally excited about these. <a href="https://www.insider.com/cereals-with-the-most-sugar-2018-3">I love Froot Loops cereal</a> and felt like this flavor would go well with the marshmallow base. </p><p>At first whiff, they smelled really fruity. And despite my experience with the original Peeps, I was actually excited to see if each color brought something different to the table. </p><div type="image" title="froot loop peeps" height="2534" width="3379" msid="81555870" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Review: </strong>The green one was very Froot Loop-y and became my favorite Peep of all time. Putting it above the original felt sacrilegious but was an easy decision. </p><p>The other colors tasted less authentic to me, yet I didn't know why that would be the case. </p><p>But ultimately, I loved this combination. It marries the <a href="https://www.insider.com/peeps-cereal-limited-edition-kelloggs-2019-1">two best parts of sugary cereal</a>: non-dehydrated marshmallows and fake fruit.</p><p>So without a doubt, I deem these the best Peeps — subjective palate or not.</p>
