New Delhi, Feb 28 () Markets regulator Sebi on Friday slapped a fine of Rs 17 lakh on Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd for failing to comply with Sebi's circular that mandated stock brokers to segregate the funds and securities of the clients. The order follows an inspection conducted by Sebi between April 2012 to March 2014. The Securities and Exchange Board of India found that there were instances where the broker had indulged into intermingling or misuse of clients' funds. The broker utilised the credit balance lying in the clients' bank account towards meeting its own or other clients' obligations. "Instances of misutilisation of funds of the clients on 11 sample days out of the 20 sample days represent approximately 55 per cent of the sample dates selected by the inspection team," the order said. The amount of misutilisation was in the range of Rs 5.01 crore to Rs 102.06 crore for the sample dates, it added. "The Noticee (Motilal Oswal) has failed to maintain segregation of client's funds, and further misused the clients' funds, thereby violating the provisions of the Sebi circular ...dated November 18, 1993," Sebi said. As per the regulator's circular issued in November 1993, the stock brokers shall keep the money of the clients in a separate account and their own money in a separate account. Besides, no payment for transactions in which the member broker is taking a position as a principal will be allowed to be made from the client's account. Since Motilal Oswal Financial Services failed to comply with the regulator's circular, monetary fine has been levied by the regulator. SRS SHWSHW

Geopolitics, the Central bank's action and inflationary concerns are themes that are not only driving precious metals but also triggering volatility in other asset classes, said Motilal Oswal in a report. The <keyword id="6356435" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="us-federal-reserve" source="Orion">US Federal Reserve</keyword> is rushing to raise interest rates at an aggressive pace with an objective to tame inflation. On the other hand, geo-political tensions between Russia-Ukraine and other economies continue to increase distress in the economy. All this is raising questions regarding the pace of global growth, institutions like IMF have also lowered their projections on the same. Pointing out India as one of the largest consumers of gold and silver, Motilal Oswal said there has been a lot of development, especially on the domestic front which is supporting prices. "Government initiatives like setting up GIFT city, signing an FTA (free trade agreement) between <keyword id="6358356" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="uae" source="Orion">UAE</keyword> and India, (implies that about 200 tonnes of gold will be imported from UAE at 1 per cent tariff rate quota-TRQ) and changes in import duty," the company said. This year macro factors will have an upper hand over the move in metal prices, as a tighter monetary policy scenario is not a great phase for non-yielding asset gold, the report said. The gold price trend is caught between the tussle of bulls and bears. Extreme negatives do trigger bargain buying for gold and so it is important for medium to long-term investors to see a broader picture, Motilal Oswal said. Except for a few dips, the overall trend for gold has remained positive, and the returns also are quite decent, the company added. The company has suggested accumulation of gold at Rs 46,800-Rs 47,500 with a medium-term target of Rs 53,000 and a long-term target of Rs 58,000 with an expected upside of 8-17 per cent. In the case of silver, Motilal Oswal said the accumulation zone will be Rs 53,500-Rs 54,000 with a medium-term target of Rs 64,500 and a long-term target of Rs 73,000 with an expected upside of 13-28 per cent. According to Quantum AMC, the correction in the gold prices from the peak has made the metal affordable this festive season. "To make the most of the correction, we recommend investing in efficient products such as gold ETFs (exchange-traded funds) to maximize the benefits," Quantum AMC said. Owning physical gold comes with additional costs such as making charges, retail premiums, storage concerns, and lower buyback value. On its part, Emkay Global Financial Services in a report said the current weakness in gold may continue till there is more concrete information on the state of the economy in the major economies, especially against the background of an aggressive central bank trade-off unfavourable to growth and promoting stability. Generally, gold is considered as a hedge against inflation but this time around it does not seem so. 'Gold and Silver for medium to long term as investment'

Mumbai, Mar 21 () Diversified financial services company Motilal Oswal Financial Services on Saturday said it has received board approval for buyback of shares of the company up to Rs 150 crore.The buy back of shares will be from the members of company except promoters, promoter group or the persons in control of the company from the open market through the stock exchanges at Rs 650 per equity share, a company statement said."This reiterates our conviction in the country's equity capital markets and future growth prospects of the company. It also provides an opportunity to return back the capital to our investors, with the surplus liquidity available on our balance sheet," the company's managing director and CEO Motilal Oswal said.The maximum buy-back size represents 7.51 per cent and 6.64 per cent of the aggregate of the total paid-up equity share capital and free reserves of the company based on its audited standalone and consolidated financial statements as at March 31, 2019, respectively.The company offerings include capital markets businesses, asset and wealth management, housing finance and equity-based treasury investments. Mumbai, Jan 22 () Diversified financial services company Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFS) on Wednesday reported an over four fold increase in its consolidated net profit at Rs 165 crore in the quarter ended December, driven by healthy growth in broking and asset management businesses.
 In the year-ago period, the company had reported a profit after tax of Rs 39.6 crore on the consolidated basis.
 "Our strategy to diversify our business model towards linear sources of earnings continues to show results. The capital markets businesses that include broking and investment banking, and asset management businesses showed good progress during the quarter leading to healthy profit," the company's Managing Director and CEO Motilal Oswal told .
 For the nine-month period, profit after tax grew 196 per cent to Rs 437 crore from Rs 148 crore.
 Asset management business (AUM) across mutual fund, portfolio management services (PMS) and alternative investment fund (AIF) grew 7 per cent to Rs 40,096 crore.
 Its asset management business reported a 22 per cent jump in its net profit at Rs 41 crore in the quarter under consideration from Rs 34 crore in the year-ago period.
 Capital markets businesses that comprises of retail broking, institutional equities and investment banking reported a net profit of Rs 47 crore in the third quarter compared to Rs 34 crore last year same period.
 Its housing finance business's profit stood at Rs 16.1 crore in October-December quarter compared to a loss of Rs 94 crore in the year-ago period.
 "Our housing finance business is set for new beginning as all legacy issues are behind with incremental focus on profitable growth," Oswal said.
 As of end-December, loan book stood at Rs 3,779 crore. HV SHW

MOFS Q3 net profit jumps to Rs 165 cr

New Delhi, Dec 31 () The BSE on Tuesday said eight companies have filed applications with the bourse to list their commercial papers for a total issue size of Rs 35,585 crore.
 The firms that have made the applications with the stock exchange are Reliance Jio Infocomm, Bajaj Housing Finance, Redington (India), ICICI Securities Primary Dealership, Motilal Oswal Financial Services, Hinduja Leyland Finance, CEAT and ICICI Home Finance Company, the BSE said in a release.
 After the process, the effective date for listing of commercial papers (CPs) with the exchange will be January 1, 2020, it added.
 The issue size is Rs 29,650 crore for Reliance Jio Infocomm, Rs 3,350 crore for Bajaj Housing Finance, Rs 950 crore for Redington (India) and Rs 700 crore for ICICI Securities Primary Dealership, the exchange said.
 Besides, Motilal Oswal Financial Services' issue size is Rs 600 crore, Hinduja Leyland Finance's issue size is Rs 235 crore and CEAT and ICICI Home Finance Company made applications for the issue size of Rs 50 crore each.
 "Till date, 50 issuers have done 258 issuances of commercial papers and have successfully listed CPs of Rs 1,05,795 crores on the BSE. The weighted average yield of these issuances is 6.09 per cent with an average tenor of 138 days," the exchange said.
 CP is an unsecured money market instrument issued in the form of promissory notes that enables highly rated corporate borrowers to diversify their sources of short-term borrowing and provides an additional instrument to investors.
 Such instruments can be issued for maturities between a minimum of 7 days and a maximum of one year from the date of issue.
 CPs are usually issued at a discount from face value and reflect prevailing market interest rates. AST HRS
