Despite telling Insider that she was "being realistic" about her expectations for the iconic race through the Big Apple's five boroughs because of the "really hard turnaround" from the <keyword id="11896183" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="olympics" source="Orion">Olympics</keyword>, she crossed the Central Park finish line with 2:24:42 on the clock — good for fourth place and an American course record. </p><p>But in typical Molly Seidel fashion, there was a twist. She did it all with two broken ribs.</p><div type="image" title="Molly Seidel." height="1874" width="2499" msid="87788813" hostid="261"></div><p>Though she declined to specify how it happened, Seidel revealed shortly after completing the course that she had cracked a pair of ribs approximately one month before the race. She had considered withdrawing from the marathon due to the persistent ache in her chest, but settled on giving it a go after having some "frank" conversations with her team and realizing  that she'd "invested too much in this" to walk away.</p><p>But that resolve didn't dull the physical pain she felt while <keyword id="11957085" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="running" source="Orion">running</keyword>.</p><p>"It started hurting later in the race — like badly," Seidel said during a press conference in New York. "But I didn't feel like it was messing up my stride or anything."</p><p>"I went all out with what God gave me today," she added. She'll head back home to Wisconsin, spend some time with family and friends, and unplug as much as possible.</p><p>Maybe she'll let those ribs fully heal, too.</p><p>"My Jeep is back in Wisconsin, so I might just fricking road trip across the country and turn my phone off," Seidel told Insider before the NYC Marathon. "I don't want to have to deal with anything after [the race]. Just finding some way to relax a bit."</p>

Hell, even the top competitors in distance running, like marathon breakout star and Olympic bronze medalist Molly Seidel, see what she's doing as "frankly inhuman."</p><p>"It's literally incredible," Seidel told Insider. "It's been so fun getting to follow her from marathon to marathon. Obviously Shalane is one of the greatest ever, if not like the greatest American marathoner, and it's just so cool to get to see someone who is in her retirement but still striving for greatness and still absolutely kicking."</p><div type="image" title="Shalane Flanagan." height="1667" width="2500" msid="87543985" hostid="261"></div><p>Flanagan - who won the 2017 NYC Marathon nine years after earning a silver medal in the 10,000 meters at the Beijing <keyword id="11896183" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="olympics" source="Orion">Olympics</keyword> - retired from professional running in 2019. But after having "fallen back in love" with running, as she wrote in an Instagram post this September, Flanagan decided to step back into the spotlight for a feat of epic proportions.</p><p>The condensed marathon schedule this fall - Berlin, London, Chicago, Boston, Tokyo, and New York City in six weeks - presented a unique opportunity to check all of the world's major races off her bucket list in rapid succession. Perhaps the most ambitious, and certainly the most taxing, portion of that stretch came in the middle of October, when Flanagan conquered the Chicago and Boston marathons on back-to-back days.</p><p>"It's hard enough to double back three months after," Seidel said. "In my normal training, I'll occasionally have longer back-to-back days. But having to race like that, your body just aches after and your entire system is just so tired."</p><div type="image" title="Shalane Flanagan." height="1667" width="2500" msid="87543987" hostid="261"></div><p>Not only did Flanagan complete both races with time to spare on her three-hour goal, but she actually bested her Chicago time by a full six minutes the following day in Boston despite carrying the fatigue of having run an entire 26.2 miles less than 24 hours prior.</p><p>Seidel marveled at the accomplishment.</p><p>"That is so incredibly difficult," she added. "Being able to like pick yourself up after 26.2 miles going super fast and be like, 'Okay, not only am I going to do this faster the next day, but I'm going to do it on a course that is so much harder.' Going from Chicago to Boston, like Boston is no joke of a course, so that was the most impressive part: running faster the next day on an even more difficult course."</p><div type="image" title="Molly Seidel." height="1665" width="2220" msid="87543990" hostid="261"></div><p>Seidel knows a thing or two about succeeding on difficult terrain. Hanging out with talented runners who spend their days working as nurses, lawyers, government employees, or business professionals helped Seidel recognize that "running doesn't have to be your whole life, but it can still be a huge part of your life."</p><p>That shift in mindset taught her "to have a better relationship with my running, to respect it for what it was, and to be able to have fun with it." "We're not curing cancer with what we're doing. We're just going out and doing this incredibly cool thing and being grateful for that."</p>

And in general, she said her goals "are less place based or time based and more effort based," so she'll be content so long as she does "the absolute best that I can."</p><p>"When I'm finishing a marathon and feeling like I really went to the wall - put it all out there and raced to the best of my ability - whatever place that may be, I can feel pretty satisfied with that," Seidel said. "And I feel like that's the best way for me mentally to approach it. It's how I approached my last three marathons."</p>

"But I actually kinda mentally took a dive after it."</p><p>Seidel has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (<keyword id="12210172" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ocd" source="Orion">OCD</keyword>), which was one of the factors that led her to seek a treatment program instead of a bid to the Olympics in 2016. "And suddenly, when all of that is shot to shit, you don't know how to process that quite as well."</p><p>"So I struggled quite a bit through the latter part of August and early September," she added.</p><p>Channeling her energy into prepping for this fall's <keyword id="12453823" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="new-york-city-marathon" source="Orion">New York City Marathon</keyword> has helped her cope. Seidel returned to her home in Flagstaff, Arizona, and began reorienting her life around training for the 50th-anniversary rendition of the iconic race through the Big Apple's five boroughs.</p><div type="image" title="Molly Seidel." height="1138" width="1518" msid="87473146" hostid="261"></div><p>After a few weeks of "my normal life: get up, train, be with my friends," she feels much better.</p><p>"Having New York to train for really helped kind of get that sense of normalcy back," Seidel said. I love just like getting into the grind of it."</p><p>Seidel will line up for her fourth-ever marathon at Staten Island's Fort Wadsworth Sunday, hoping to cross the finish line in Central Park ahead of some esteemed competitors. In New York, she'll run alongside 2020 Olympic gold medalist Peres Jepchirchir and 2012 Olympic silver medalist Sally Kipyego, among others.</p><div type="image" title="Molly Seidel." height="1693" width="2258" msid="87473148" hostid="261"></div><p>It's a stacked field, to be sure. But Seidel insists she's prepared.</p><p>"Being able to get back to my safe spot here in Flagstaff of knowing what I'm doing, having my runs, having my training plan, having my support network here has been really instrumental for finally feeling like, okay, like I'm ready to go," Seidel said. "I'm mentally where I need to be to race a major marathon."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The challenges of marathon running can lead to awe-inspiring and sometimes silly circumstances.</li><li>Marathon athletes frequently deal with pooping during the race, and aren't afraid to share the details. </li></ul><p>Running the 26.2 miles of a marathon is an incredible feat of athleticism and resilience — but it's just as much of a showcase of the absurdities of the human experience, whether by bizarre circumstances, the quirks of biology, or a bit of both. </p><p>Experienced athletes have shared their sometimes funny, often awe-inspiring, and definitely weird anecdotes from race day. </p><p>Whether it's wrestling with bad digestion, fighting through serious injury, or slowing to a walk to do a good deed, these stories highlight the good, the bad, and the ugly that a marathon can offer.</p><h2><strong>Pooping your pants during a marathon is more common than you think</strong></h2><p>All of us are subject to answering nature's call, and elite athletes are no exception. </p><p>Unfortunately, the human gastrointestinal system isn't big on convenience, and doesn't take no for an answer, even if you're on track for a personal record and would rather not stop for a  bathroom break. </p><p>When Tamara Torlakson felt the urge to go halfway through the 2018 Mountains 2 Beach Marathon in California, she <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/woman-pooped-pants-during-marathon-ran-with-it-in-shorts-2021-11"><u>pooped in her shorts while running</u></a> rather than slow down, and didn't regret it. </p><p>"It just came out and I felt a lot better," she previously told Insider.</p><p>Torklakson finished the remaining miles at a personal record pace, wasting no energy worrying about her soiled shorts. </p><p>She said she "didn't give a shit" if other people noticed she had just taken one.</p><p>"Marathoners don't judge," she added.</p><p>Nearing the finish line, Torlakson announced "I pooped my pants!" to her friends. After ending the race with a time of three hours, seven minutes, beating her previous best by one minute, 20 seconds, she proceeded to the nearest porta-potty to clean up with some baby wipes. </p><p>Torlakson is far from the only person to deuce on the go. A <a target="_blank" href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1556421/"><u>1992 study</u></a> of long-distance athletes found that 12 percent reported pooping their pants while running.</p><h2><strong>One woman had to stop 9 times to poop during a race</strong></h2><p>For every athlete that poops their pants during a race, there are many, many more than take extensive precautions to avoid such a fate. </p><p>The 1992 study of runners found that 62% reported taking a poo break while training. </p><p>But for Deirdre Keane, one break wasn't enough, Insider previously reported. During the 2014 Philadelphia Marathon, she felt her stomach churning and rushed to the nearest bathroom stop — then had to visit every subsequent porta-potty across more than half the race. </p><p>"My strategy became to sprint as fast as I could, mile to mile, to make it to the port-a-potty before the next explosion," she said. "I <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/woman-stopped-9-porta-potties-during-marathon-got-personal-record-2021-11"><u>visited nine porta-potty in 16 miles that day</u></a>. At mile 17, I was finally OK."</p><p>The unconventional racing technique earned her a personal best finish of three hours, 38 minutes.</p><p>Experts previously told Insider that running is conducive to digestive stress in part because of the rhythmic motion of the exercise. Nearly a decade later in 2023, she took on the grueling challenge of running seven marathons across all seven continents in one week, known as the World Marathon Challenge.</p><p>In addition to the crushing mileage and mind-boggling logistics, she said the event was beset by gastrointestinal issues, including food poisoning that left athletes unable to eat, or unable to stop ejecting their food from either end. </p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/runners-food-poisoning-diarrhea-vomiting-7-marathons-continents-7-days-2023-3"><u>One woman "puked-slash-had-diarrhea on all seven continents</u></a>," according to Keane. </p><h2><strong>Broken bones couldn't stop an Olympian from setting a new marathon record</strong></h2><p>Molly Seidel was used to being an underdog in distance running. As a surprise qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she became a breakout star by earning a bronze medal while running her third-ever marathon. </p><p>A tough act to follow, Seidel managed to up the ante even more three months later at the 2021 New York City Marathon.</p><p>Not only did Seidel finish with a time of two hours, 24 minutes, and 42 seconds — a course record for an American athlete, and fourth place overall — she did it with two broken ribs.</p><p>Seidel told Insider's Meredith Cash that she had cracked her ribs a month prior to the race, and considered dropping out because of persistent ache in her chest. After consulting with her team, she decided to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/molly-seidel-nyc-marathon-broken-ribs-record-2021-11"><u>compete in the marathon with the broken bones </u></a>because she had "invested too much" in the opportunity. </p><p>Seidel said in a press conference in New York that the injury was painful, but she was able to push through. </p><p>"It started hurting later in the race — like badly," she said. "But I didn't feel like it was messing up my stride or anything."</p><h2><strong>A runner gave up her personal best pace to care for a kitten </strong></h2><p>Not every weird story ends in a personal record. Sarah Bohan, a 26-year-old runner from Boston, opted to give up her shot at a faster time in the service of a greater good — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/runner-saves-kitten-forgoes-personal-record-chicago-marathon-2023-10"><u>a tiny kitten</u></a>. </p><div type="image" title="Two runners pose for a selfie, one of them holding a black-and-white kitten." height="1064" width="1419" msid="104967920" hostid="261" sizebytes="129600"></div><p>Just five miles from the end of the 2023 Chicago Marathon, and well on track to hit a personal record, Bohan caught a glimpse of a bit of white fluff along the route. It turned out to be a kitten, dirty, skinny, and scared, without any apparent help nearby. As luck would have it, Bohan was racing for an animal welfare group called <a target="_blank" href="https://my.pawschicago.org/TEAMPAWSChicago2023/Member/MyPage/6069916/Sarah-Bohan"><u>Team PAWS Chicago</u></a> and wasn't about to leave the little feline to go it alone.</p><p>Bohan tucked the furry baby to her chest and carried it along the course, along the way encountering another runner who joined in on the quest to find a home for the kitten. They eventually encountered a spectator who offered to give their new friend a good home, and passed off their cute cargo, according to a representative from Team PAWS. </p><p>The pair then finished the race side-by-side, stopping again to help an injured runner cross the finish line. This piece was originally published in August 2021. </em></p><p>The hedge-fund manager and craft-beer aficionado Bill Shufelt was turning 30 and training for an ultramarathon in 2013 when he decided to stop drinking alcohol.</p><p>"It turned out to be the biggest life hack I've ever uncovered," Shufelt told Insider. He slept better, ate better, and was more alert at work, he said.</p><p>After his training, Shufelt researched the nonalcoholic-beer market and crunched the numbers for a few years before deciding to turn his life hack into a new career. He quit his position at Point72 Asset Management in 2017 and cofounded Athletic Brewing a year later with the head brewer John Walker.</p><p>"There's a huge percentage of the adult population that are underserved by current offerings," Shufelt said. An estimated <a href="http://www.add-resources.org/half-the-worlds-adults-do-not-drink-alcohol-what-should-the-policy-implications-be.5325474-315773.html">50% of adults worldwide</a> don't drink alcohol. </p><p>Today, Athletic Brewing controls 45% of the nonalcoholic craft beer market in the US, which has grown nearly 352% over the past 12 months to $20.7 million, according to Nielsen data.</p><p>"Niches are not to be dismissed, especially if you do something great," said the sports analyst Darren Rovell, whose venture-capital firm Tastemaker Capital Partners backs emerging food and beverage brands, including Athletic Brewing.  </p><p>In July, Athletic closed its largest round of funding to date with a $50 million raise led by the longtime investors and board members Alliance Consumer Growth and TRB Advisors.</p><p>The round also included backing from celebrity investors such as the chef David Chang, the cyclist Lance Armstrong, and the NFL player J.J. Watt. </p><div type="image" title="Athletic Brewing" height="702" width="936" msid="95411287" hostid="261"></div><h2>Distinguishing itself from rivals</h2><p>The nonalcoholic-beer segment includes powerhouse craft breweries such as Lagunitas, Samuel Adams, and Golden Road Brewing, which each produce at least one nonalcoholic brew alongside their massive craft-beer selections.</p><p>Athletic Brewing said it distinguishes itself from big beer brewers by being the only brewery in the country dedicated solely to nonalcoholic craft beer. </p><p>Its selection of nonalcoholic craft beers can be found in 15,000 retailers in 35 states, from small bottle shops to high-profile stores such as Total Wine, BevMo!, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's. The restaurateur Danny Meyer and Chang serve Athletic Brewing in Eleven Madison Park, Gramercy Tavern, The Modern, and Momofuku Ko. </p><p>Athletic Brewing also has a large <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/restaurants-turn-to-coffee-and-beer-subscriptions-to-drive-sales-2021-1">subscription</a> membership, which allows it to ship six-packs across the US with few hassles because the company is not beholden to regulatory issues tied to shipping alcohol.</p><p>So far this year, the brewery has released 43 nonalcoholic beers. Subscription members get first dibs on new releases, a direct-to-consumer e-commerce channel that gave Athletic "a huge advantage" going into the pandemic, Shufelt said. </p><div type="image" title="Athletic Brewing" height="642" width="857" msid="95411289" hostid="261"></div><h2>'Just make it good'</h2><p>Athletic Brewing is benefiting from a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hard-seltzer-white-claw-truly-topo-chico-pandemic-eases-2021-7">fast-growing market,</a> which also includes nonalcoholic spirits. </p><p>Overall US beer sales were down 3% in 2020, while <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-gin-brand-amass-is-crowdfunding-5-million-of-its-latest-round-2021-5">craft brewer volume</a> sales declined 9%, according to the <a href="https://www.brewersassociation.org/statistics-and-data/national-beer-stats/">Brewers Association</a>. But <a href="https://www.statista.com/forecasts/1206691/market-value-non-alcoholic-beverages-worldwide">Statista </a>estimates that the global nonalcoholic drinks market will reach $1.44 trillion by 2025. </p><p>Shufelt didn't anticipate the demand. When he opened a 10,000-square-foot Connecticut facility in 2018, he thought it would last five years.</p><p>"We outgrew that first brewery in about 10 months," he said.</p><p>With $70 million in total VC funding raised, the company was able to open a 150,000-square-foot brewery in San Diego, a mecca for the craft-beer industry, in 2020. Athletic bought the brewery from craft-beer pioneer Ballast Point.</p><p>Another 150,000-square-foot brewery is in the works in Connecticut. The facility is needed to meet wholesale demand, in which sales are up more than 600% year over year. </p><p>Of course, this being nonalcoholic beer, there are naysayers.</p><p>Rovell, the sports analyst and early investor, has defended Athletic Brewing to his audience of <a href="https://twitter.com/darrenrovell/status/1288544259331821569?s=21">2 million Twitter</a> followers and even offers discounts to nonbelievers. "No one can tell," he said. "I have never had anyone say, 'That's definitely not alcoholic beer.'"</p><p>When Shufelt first ran the idea of launching a nonalcoholic-beer brewery by Rovell a few years ago at a beverage conference, Rovell gave him one piece of advice: "Just make it good."</p>
