Spotify reveals it has paid $23 billion in royalties to record labels

New Delhi, Mar 5 () Regulator Sebi on Thursday proposed two mechanisms to make the e-voting process more secure, convenient and simple for shareholders. <p> At present, multiple players provide e-voting facility to listed entities in the country and shareholders require to register and maintain multiple user IDs and passwords with them, the Sebi noted in a consultation paper. </p><p> To enable e-voting through a single login credential, Sebi after consultation with the depositories and ESPs suggested a mechanism wherein demat account holders may access e-voting portals of multiple ESPs through web-based services provided by depository participants or depositories.</p><p> "There are multiple e-voting service providers providing e-voting facility to listed entities in India. This necessitates registration on various ESPs and maintenance of multiple user IDs and passwords by shareholders. Multiple login credentials, apart from being cumbersome for the shareholders to remember, are also prone to misuse," Sebi said.</p><p> Sebi has proposed authentication of shareholders at the depository level and ESPs shall allow the demat account holders to cast their vote based on the validation carried out by the depository.</p><p>To enable demat account holders to cast vote on different ESP portals without having to register again with the ESPs, Sebi has proposed two mechanisms.</p><p>Sebi suggested direct registration with depositories wherein, after the initial one-time registration, shareholders would be able to access the e-voting facilities through mobile or e-mail based OTP verification. Shareholders would be able to access the e-voting links of ESPs without further authentication by ESPs for participating in the e-voting process.</p><p>Alternatively, demat account holders will have the option of accessing various ESP portals directly from their demat accounts, through the facility provided by the depository. The depositories may authenticate the investors through mobile or e-mail based OTP verification for allowing such access. </p><p>Thereby, shareholders would be able to access the e-voting links of ESPs without further authentication by ESPs for participating in the e-voting process.</p><p>Depositories shall share necessary details of the demat account holders with other ESPs and similarly, ESPs shall also share the electronic logs and other related information with respect to the e-voting transactions with the depositories.</p><p>"This facility shall be available to all the shareholders holding the securities in demat mode. ESPs may continue to provide the facility of e-voting to physical shareholders as per the existing process," Sebi said.</p><p>Sebi said that depositories shall establish a dedicated helpline to resolve technical difficulties faced by shareholders relating to the e-voting facility.</p><p>Besides, it added that ESPs shall send the details of the vote cast to the shareholders via SMS or e-mail.</p>Comments on the proposal have been sought from the public by March 31, 2020. Eight in ten bank account holders in India's metros now use mobile banking apps

New Delhi, Dec 27 () From January, SBI customers will be able to make ATM withdrawal above Rs 10,000 only after an OTP verification during 8 PM to 8 AM.
<p> The OTP-validated ATM transaction has been introduced to minimise the number of unauthorised transactions, State Bank of India (SBI) said in a Facebook post on Thursday.
</p><p>"With the introduction of its OTP-based cash withdrawal facility, State Bank ATMs have added another layer of security for cash withdrawals. OTP will be received on the customer's mobile number registered with the bank," SBI said. 
</p><p>This additional factor of authentication will protect State Bank card holders from unauthorized ATM cash withdrawals, it said further.
</p><p>SBI said that the new feature will not require any major change in the present process to withdraw cash from its ATMs (automated teller machines). 
</p><p>However, this facility will not be applicable for transactions, where a State Bank card holder withdraws cash from another bank's ATM, because this functionality has not been developed in National Financial Switch (NFS), it added. 
</p><p> In this process, once the cardholder enters the amount they wish to withdraw, the ATM screen displays the OTP window. The customer has to enter the OTP received on the registered mobile number to complete the transaction.
</p><p>  NFS is the largest interoperable ATM network in the country and it manages more than 95 per cent of the domestic interbank ATM transactions. 
</p> "This will safeguard the customers against the risk of unauthorized transactions on account of skimmed/cloned cards, while withdrawing cash at State Bank ATMs," the bank said.    KPM RUJ

SBI to introduce OTP-based ATM transactions from January

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>US Attorney General Eric Holder will travel to Germany to discuss privacy concerns after the NSA spying scandal damaged relations between the two allies, Germany said Wednesday.</p>
<p>German interior minister Thomas de Maiziere told journalists in Washington that Holder has accepted an invitation from Berlin to explain how the US would curb spying on foreign nationals overseas.</p>
<p>"We will have this discussion together in Germany," he said.</p>
<p>The US Justice Department did not immediately confirm the trip and de Maiziere said that Holder's visit would not take place "before the summer recess."</p>
<p>In a speech in January, US President Barack Obama said he had taken "the unprecedented step of extending certain protections that we have for the American people to people overseas."</p>
<p>Obama directed the intelligence community and Holder to develop "safeguards" for the privacy of foreign citizens.</p>
<p>After meeting Holder on Wednesday, de Maiziere said details are still scarce, stressing that "no decision" has been made in Washington on what restrictions would apply to spying overseas.</p>
<p>But he welcomed plans to end the NSA practice of scooping up metadata from US telecoms companies, which will also apply to foreign citizens if their communications is routed through the US.</p>
<p>"It's going to be a long path, but I see some progress," he said.</p>
<p>Germans were outraged the revelations last year by rogue intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, of the vast surveillance programs run by the National Security Agency (NSA).</p>
<p>When the reports showed that US spies were even eavesdropping on Chancellor Angela Merkel's mobile phone, the anger spread to the leadership of one of Washington's main European allies.</p>
<p>Merkel admitted during a visit to White House earlier this month that differences on this issue remained.</p>
<p>But both governments appear to want to overcome the diplomatic row, despite Washington's rejection of a legally binding no-spy agreement with Germany.</p>
<p>Germany and the US agreed to engage in a "cyber dialogue" to address their disagreements over intelligence gathering and data protection, with a first round of talks scheduled for late June.</p>

Eric Holder To Discuss NSA Spying Scandal In Germany

<p>Investors appear to be reacting to the fact that <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1372375/000110465913063304/a13-18435_1ex99d2.htm">Millennial is issuing 24.6 million new shares of stock</a> to Jumptap holders, replacing all their equity in the latter company. That's a major dilution of MM — it's 22.5% of the entire combined company.</p>
<p>But the decline in the stock price ignores the debate between profits and scale. I've noted previously that Wall Street, which favors profits, has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/wall-street-is-punishing-adtech-players-for-failing-to-make-money-2013-7">punished mobile and other adtech firms for not showing profits</a>, despite their increasing size. These firms must demonstrate that with greater scale comes greater profitability — otherwise what's the point?</p>
<p>On that basis, the Millennial-Jumptap deal looks dysfunctional. Jumptap had revenues of $63 million in 2012 and lost $13 million. It joins with Millennial, which lost $5.4 million on revenues of $178 million in the same period.</p>
<p>But the investor deck suggests that the combined company might be instantly profitable because <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1372375/000110465913063304/a13-18435_1ex99d3.htm">it will realize up to $25 million in annual savings</a> by 2015, according to MM CEO Paul Palmieri, by cutting duplicate jobs and functions.</p>
<p>That, in fact, is the point: The bigger these operations get, the more efficient they can become.</p>
<p>The deal could signal a much-needed wave of consolidation in the mobile ad business. There are dozens of these companies. They all do kinda the same thing. They don't all need to exist. Some of them simply need to be acquired or killed.</p>
<p>And note what <em>didn't</em> happen in the transaction: Millennial spent <em>zero</em> cash. Its balance sheet still shows $122 million in cash, much of which it got from going public in the first place. In other words, Millennial has just increased the size of its business by greater than 50% at no cash cost whatsoever.</p>
<p>Few other companies can say they've achieved the same thing. That's a reason to own MM, not sell it. This is a company that looks like it is actually creating the scale needed to generate meaningful profits in the long run.</p>

But the company's revenues as disclosed are far below <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/most-important-people-in-mobile-advertising-2013-6#14-george-bell-ceo-of-jumptap-no-10-last-year-16">the previously provided estimates of $75 million</a>. The company also loses more money than Millennial, even though it is smaller. The <a href="http://www.xconomy.com/boston/2013/08/13/end-of-an-era-jumptap-bought-by-millennial-media-for-200m/">value of the deal is $200 million</a>. The company had taken $122 million in funding. Presumably, Jumptap holders' new Millennial stock functions as a premium on their old Jumptap stock.</p>
<p>If so, Millennial has solved a lot of Jumptap CEO George Bell's problems with a single handshake.</p>

In an email sent to subscribers in May, EE TV said the decision followed "discussions with content rights holders."</p><p>Business Insider can reveal that the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5 had major reservations about the functionality&#xa0;and EE was made aware of these concerns in a legal letter to its general counsel, James Blendis.</p><p>The broadcasters felt that "Recordings to Go" was an unlicensed use of copyright protected content and potentially infringed UK copyright laws.</p><p>TV industry sources have told Business Insider that EE TV launched "Recordings to Go" without consulting the major British broadcasters, many of whom were caught off guard by the innovation. Sources said some&#xa0;US production studios were also&#xa0;concerned by the EE TV feature, given they hold the rights to many of the programmes aired by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5.</p><h2>EE has "undermined" its relationship with rights holders</h2><p>One TV industry source said EE TV's behaviour was in stark contrast to Sky, which launched its online service Sky Go - which enables subscribers to watch TV shows on the move - in full consultation with major rights holders.</p><p>"EE has slightly undermined its relationship with content providers," the TV insider added.</p><p>An EE spokesman reiterated the fact that "Recordings to Go" was withdrawn following conversations with rights holders.</p><p>"We're keen to innovate, and we'll continue to seek new ways to offer our customers a great experience," he added in a statement to Business Insider.</p><p>The broadcasters welcomed the withdrawal.</p><p>A BBC spokesman said: "The BBC did not licence or otherwise authorise EE's 'Recordings to Go' service. We understand from EE that the 'Recordings to Go' service is due to be withdrawn."</p><p>ITV added that it too was not informed about "Recordings to Go" prior to launch and "approached" EE about its plans, while Channel 4 emphasised why it is vital TV platforms protect content rights.</p><p>"As a 100% commercially funded PSB which invests all profits back into free-to-air programmes, it is important that we secure commercial or contractual relationships with third party platforms for the features they provide, to protect future investment in original UK content and the creative sector," a Channel 4 spokeswoman said.</p><p>Channel 5 did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment in time for publication.</p><h2>Lingering concerns about EE's innovative catch-up service "TV Replay"</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Although progress has been made on "Recordings to Go," there remains lingering concerns about another EE TV feature, called "TV Replay."</p><p><a href="http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/news/broadcasters-raise-concerns-over-ee-tv/5094425.article" target="_blank">UK television industry magazine Broadcast reported in September last year</a> that ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 had complained about the functionality, which automatically records hundreds of hours' worth of content and presents it in an easily-navigable menu.</p><p>Sources have told Business Insider that the trio of broadcasters remain unhappy about "TV Replay" and are engaged in conversations with EE about the matter. They are concerned because the service encourages ad skipping.</p><p>Unlike the "Recordings to Go," the issue has not provoked a legal letter, but the broadcasters are maintaining a watching brief.</p><p>One person with knowledge of the matter said EE TV's low subscriber base - which Business Insider is told stands at 100,000 - means it is not currently a major issue. The facility is available at over 10,000 ATM locations in the country. At the moment the sending service is only available to people who have a valid ICICI bank account. However, people who are receiving the cash need not have an account with the private bank. To do this the account holder can send cash using the internet banking facility. Here sender needs to register the recipient’s name, mobile number and address.<br />

The sender will get a four-digit security code and the receiver will get a 6 digit reference code over SMS. After which the recipient can withdraw money using his mobile number and the reference code.  Not bad at all.<br />

Mumbai, Mar 26 () The finance ministry has asked banks to ensure smooth transfer of money to women account holders under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) as part of the stimulus package announced by the government.<p> While announcing the relief package for the poor affected by the 21-day nationwide lockdown, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said 20.4 crore women having Jan Dhan bank accounts would get one-time cash help of Rs 1,500 spread over three months.</p><p> "You are requested to ensure that the said amount is transferred smoothly to the targeted accounts, so that the beneficiaries can get access to the funds during this time to carry on their livelihood without facing any hardship," the department of financial services wrote in a letter addressed to head of public and major private sector banks.</p><p> Banks have been asked to make a list of beneficiaries -- women PMJDY account holders, and intimate it to the finance ministry, which would then inform about the date of transfer of funds.</p><p> The ministry has asked banks to prepare a detailed plan, in consultation with state governments and district authorities through the state level bankers' committee (SLBCs) and lead district managers, for withdrawal of fund.</p><p> "Ensure that withdrawal of the amount by individual beneficiaries from their respective bank accounts is done while also following the restrictions required under the on-going lockdown and maintaining the prescribed social distancing and sanitisation," it said.</p><p> Banks have been asked to maintain adequate liquidity at the branches and with business correspondents, regularly replenish ATMs to meet the requirement, ensure sufficient cash for mobile ATMs and send SMSes to beneficiaries regarding time schedule of withdrawal.</p><p> The government on Thursday announced a Rs 1.7 lakh crore stimulus that included free foodgrain and cooking gas to poor for three months, and cash doles to women and poor senior citizens as it looked to ease the economic impact of the nationwide lockdown.</p> Over 80 crore poor ration card holders will each get 5 kg of wheat or rice and one kg of preferred pulses free of cost every month for the next three months.
