You can expect a steep drop in prices of data packs by 2020 and the prices can go as low as Rs 50 per GB. As per Analysys Mason, the 4G LTE data usage would go up to 6-7 GB per month and the 3G data usage is expected to reach 1.5-2 GB by 2020 because 3G tariffs are expected to drop in line with 4G tariffs. The prices are expected to decline also due to <keyword id="6354504" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio">Reliance Jio</keyword>’s entry as <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword> will make 4G phone affordable for 80% of India's population. "In India, contribution of voice is still higher at 60-70% but we expect India to move in a direction where voice contributes only 30-40%, as per the international benchmarks,” Siddharth Thakkar, consultant at Analysys Mason, told ET. But, in a bid to have lower prices, the telecom operators will have to maintain a market share of above 17-18% and bring down the cost per GB for the end user to Rs 30-40. The competition in the telecom sector is going to heat up, thanks to Reliance Jio, which is planning to launch a 4G VoLTE feature phone in the market and this may lead to incumbents losing some of their low-end voice subscribers.

Just at a time when the tech savvys across the country were assuming the fate of net neutrality, Aircel has come up with a plan that would enable access to basic free internet in a year as part of the telecom operator strategy to push mobile internet usage. 
 
"Our intent is that everybody should have access to Internet and it should not be limited to only elites. We have started offering free basic Internet service in Tamil Nadu and it should be available across India in a year," Aircel Chief Marketing Officer Anupam Vasudev told PTI. 
 
The company under its Free Basic Internet programme is offering service with download speed of 64 kb per second. 
 
"For new customers it is free for three months. After that if they continue to be active, customers by recharging with amount of at least Rs 150 in a month, the free basic Internet will be complimentary for them," Aircel Vice President for Data, Devices and Online Sunil Kuttam said. 
 
The company is strengthening its 3G network with target to have around 20,000 mobile sites by end of next year. 
 
Talking about strategy to attract customers to enhance their data usage, Kuttam said that the company has partnered Microsoft, Samsung, Gionee, Micromax, Lava, Karbonn and Intex to offer their move devices at discounted price with some amount of free data. 
 
Aircel is also partnering Snapdeal, Amazon and Flipkart to sell paper recharge. These recharges would bel sold under cash on delivery model for those customers who are skeptical of sharing their debit or credit card details online. 
 
The company today announced sale of two recharge vouchers in denomination of Rs 402 and Rs 602 through Snapdeal which will offer 3G and 2G mobile Internet service at discounted price compared with options available through retail channels. 
 
"We are offering 100 minutes talk time and 3 GB of 3G and 2G data, depending on the location of subscriber, which is very less than price available through other channels," Vasudev said. 
 
Aircel has also partnered Ingram, a mobile insurance provider, for Aircel Cover Plus. Any customer who buys a new smartphone through Aircel Will be able to choose from two variants of this product within seven days of the purchase for getting coverage limited to Accidental and Liquid Damage only. 
 
For new smartphones up to Rs 10,000 customers can purchase Rs 499 pack that offers benefits worth Rs 1,200. This will also include 1GB Aircel data for three months. The other pack available for Rs 799 pack offers insurance for smartphones up to Rs 55,000 and will include 1GB data for three months and Premium Anti-Virus.

Mobile operator <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> is handing out free high-speed data to its postpaid subscribers for the next three months to counter aggressive offerings by newcomer Reliance <keyword id="2003276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword>. <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> is offering up to 30 GB of free data for the next three months for postpaid subscribers logging onto the 'My Airtel' app by April 30. For those who have already availed a similar offer by the company last month, 10 GB free data (one month validity) will be up for grabs, a company spokesperson said. "Now enjoy some free data every month for the next three months...That should cover any long vacation you may have planned," Bharti Airtel CEO <keyword id="521074" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gopal-Vittal">Gopal Vittal</keyword> said in an email to subscribers. In addition, Airtel has said that it will offer the value to customers who have not activated the right international roaming pack, before their travel abroad. Citing an example, Airtel said if a subscriber has not activated a pack before travelling abroad and in case the daily usage exceeds Rs 499, Airtel will automatically activate the Rs 499 pack (that includes unlimited incoming calls, free data, SMS) at no added cost. If the usage charges are less than Rs 499, the users will only be charged on the rates that are applicable, the email added. Airtel said the move will protect consumers from bill shocks while travelling abroad. The company is sending out mails in batches to inform all its postpaid customers about the offers. Over the last few months, Reliance Jio's disruptive positioning in the markhas forced other operators to respond with generous counter-offers to retain customers, turning up the competitive heat in a market of over 1.12 billion mobile subscribers. Jio, which debuted last year with free data and voice offering, now has 72 million paid subscribers (as on March 31, 2017).

Scared of Jio: Airtel rolls out free high-speed data for postpaid consumer

Telecom operator Idea Cellular today announced free incoming calls on domestic roaming and unveiled international roaming value packs that, it claimed, would prevent "bill shocks" to those travelling abroad, as per a news report by PTI. 
 
The offers come on the heels of the larger rival Bharti Airtel announcing removal of all roaming charges for outgoing and incoming calls as well as SMSes and data usage within India, to take on competition from newcomer Reliance Jio. 
 
"Effective April 1, 2017, Idea's 200 million customers will enjoy free incoming calls while roaming on company's 2G, 3G and 4G network across 400,000 towns and villages in the country. Idea customers will be able to make outgoing calls, SMS freely at affordable rates while roaming anywhere in India," an Idea release said. 
 
It further said mobile data tariffs and data pack benefits of home circle will be available while roaming within India at no extra charge. 
The facility of free incoming calls on domestic roaming will be extended to both prepaid and postpaid customers. 
 
For international travellers, the company is offering international roaming value packs with free bundled usage of up to 400 outgoing minutes, 100 SMSes per day, 3GB bundled data and unlimited incoming calls for Rs 2,499 for Asia, and Rs 5,999 for Europe for 30 days validity. 
 
"These international roaming packs also come bundled with free 1GB/2GB/3GB data and overage charges as low as Rs 3 per MB to avoid bill shock to travelling customers," Idea said. 
 
The company said it has done a study of customer s travel destinations, usage patterns and bill shock complaints to design a new range of value packs for select destinations across Europe, Asia, America, UK and Middle East. 
 
"For value conscious customers, the packs start at Rs 1,199 for 10 days validity and go up to Rs 5,999 for 30 days validity, giving up to 85 per cent savings on international roaming charges," it said. 
 
"...Idea is now set to enable over 200 million customers to use their mobile phones freely, without having to worry about roaming charges, while they travel anywhere in the country," Sashi Shankar, Chief Marketing Officer of Idea Cellular said. 
 
On February 27, Bharti Airtel had removed domestic roaming charges on calls and data, and said international call rates will be cut by up to 90 per cent to as low as Rs 3 per minute and data charges by up to 99 per cent to Rs 3 per MB across popular roaming destinations. 
In a press statement, 'Airtel Declares War on Roaming', the company had then said the move will lead to "death of National Roaming" from April 1.

T-Mobile is giving people free data to play 'Pokemon GO'

Reliance is expected to formally launch Jio in the coming months, and the launch has already created quite some buzz in the market, perturbed by which India’s leading telecom company Bharti <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> has slashed its 4G and 3G mobile internet charges by up to 80%.

These are controlled by the Ring app, and it's this which is leaking data, according to the EFF.In total, the study found information including names, IP addresses, and mobile networks was leaking to five tracking services.It isn't unusual for mobile apps to contain third-party trackers, although many users are unaware of the extent to which they are tracked. App developers allow these trackers for various reasons - to monetize their app or to keep track of how often the app crashes, for example.But the EFF highlighted how Ring's promise of security is undermined by its Android app handing out personally identifiable data to third parties. "This data is given to parties either only mentioned briefly, buried on an internal page users are unlikely to ever see, or not listed at all," the EFF wrote.Facebook, via its Graph API, was found to be receiving each Ring app user's time zone, device model and screen resolution, and a unique identifier. What's more, the study found that the app gives data to Facebook whether or not its customers actually have Facebook accounts.Meanwhile, Google-owned crash logging firm Crashlytics was also found to be receiving sent data from the app.The EFF said "the extent of [the Ring app's] data sharing with [Crashanalytics] is yet to be determined."The other three companies found to be receiving personally identifiable information were Branch, a mobile measurement and deep linking platform; AppsFlyer, a big data company; and MixPanel, a business analytics firm.Ring has faced heavy criticism in recent months, much of it privacy-related. Amazon's home security company Ring hands personally identifiable information to Facebook and Google, according to a study

<keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword> Ventures Korea has invested in a Gurgaon-based company called <keyword id="3302435" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="True-Balance">True Balance</keyword>, which keeps a track of the balance available on prepaid mobile accounts. 
 
This is SoftBank's first investment in an Indian company this year. 
 
True Balance was set up in 2014 by South Korean expatriate Cheolwon (Charlie) Lee. 
 
The app gives balance check, call log, data pack assessment, and recharge service for prepaid accounts on Android smartphones. 
 
"The True Balance application retires the old, inconvenient way of checking your current mobile balance," said JP Lee, Director of SoftBank Ventures Korea, adding “True Balance is built for "centralizing and analyzing your balance log data, enabling it to be the most valuable as a potential mobile wallfor the future." 
 
"We have already crossed the 2 million downloads mark this March and are looking to achieve a new milestone of 10 million downloads in the next 9 months," said Cheolwon.
