One-third of children believe the world would be better off without certain apps, reflecting their frustration with the digital environment they’ve grown up in. The vehicle in Paris had already picked up small blemishes around the edge of one door.The Cybertruck drew a huge crowd in Paris, but the reaction from attendees wasn't all positive.Two attendees told BI the pickup was "too big" for the European market, with one joking that the truck was larger than his house.<h2 id="fca2d485-57c3-4ff3-93f7-fddc92157376">No sign of a European debut</h2>Despite being available for over a year, Tesla has not yet indicated whether it plans to sell the Cybertruck in Europe, one of its most important markets.Experts <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cybertruck-elon-musk-tesla-not-sold-europe-anytime-soon-2023-12">previously told BI that the Cybertruck</a>, which weighs <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/cybertruck/en_us/GUID-12A976DD-EB60-431B-AFF1-5A37E95006DB.html">8,860 to 9,200 pounds</a> or around 4.43 to 4.5 tons when factoring in passengers, fluids, and cargo — is likely too heavy to be driven in Europe with a standard driver's license.You need a separate license to drive anything heavier than 3.5 tons — including passengers and cargo — in the European Union. In the US, the threshold is much higher, which means you don't need a special license to drive the Cybertruck.A few Cybertrucks have reached the continent using sneaky tactics to get around regulations, but even those have faced stern opposition.Campaign groups <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.transportenvironment.org/articles/safety-groups-call-on-czech-government-to-review-registration-of-dangerous-cybertruck">called for Cybertrucks to be removed from European roads</a> earlier this month after one was successfully registered in the Czech Republic.<div type="image" title="Cybertruck on display at the Paris Motor Show" height="1875" width="2500" msid="114372870" hostid="261" sizebytes="378298"></div>Elon Musk previously floated the idea of producing a smaller version of the Cybertruck for European markets.But even if Tesla did manage to get approval to sell the pickup in Europe, it's unclear whether there would be demand for it.Pedro Pacheco, vice president of research at Gartner, previously told BI that the tiny market for pickup trucks in Europe meant it may not be worth Tesla's trouble to sell the Cybertruck across the Atlantic."For a vehicle in the category of the Cybertruck, there's not a huge market in Europe, because pickup trucks generally are not very common," he said.Tesla did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

The S&amp;P 500, the growth-heavy Nasdaq Composite, and the small-cap heavy Russell 2000 rocketed between 2.5% and 5.8% higher on Wednesday.That broad-based equity rally didn't include bonds, which got shelled on Wednesday. Yields, which move inversely to bond prices, vaulted higher for US Treasuries across durations.Both of those moves make sense, said David Kelly, the global strategy chief at JPMorgan Asset Management, in an interview on Wednesday."If you have a Republican sweep, then Donald Trump can push through <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tax-cut-tariff-plan-outlook-presidential-election-scenarios-harris-trump-2024-10#big--and-small-business-owners">whatever tax bill he wants to in 2025</a>, pretty much," Kelly said. That would be a major headwind for bonds, and stocks might also get dragged down.<h2 id="9ce813f5-aaa4-4439-aa03-ba3a4736747d">Tariffs could be a terrible outcome for stocks</h2>If one of Kelly's highest convictions hunches is correct, this market rally is in trouble anyway.The strategy chief has been adamant that higher tariffs — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/global-reaction-donald-trump-election-victory-tariffs-trade-disputes-2024-11">one of Trump's key proposals</a> — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/economy-outlook-tariffs-trump-trade-war-slowdown-jpmorgan-david-kelly-2024-10">would cripple the US economy</a> and endanger the global economic expansion."Tariffs are not a good idea," Kelly said at a late-October press event hosted by JPMAM. "It's kind of like a nuclear threat — the whole point is, if you actually end up using it, you kind of screwed up somewhere."Most economists condemn tariffs, which are taxes on imports, because they tend to lead to higher prices and lower economic growth. Kelly has said he'd have to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/economy-outlook-tariffs-trump-trade-war-slowdown-jpmorgan-david-kelly-2024-10">increase his inflation target and slash his long-term growth outlook</a> if Trump followed through on his tariff proposals, given that they'd almost certainly prompt counter-tariffs that would hurt US exporters as well."Retaliatory tariffs hurt growth in both countries and push up inflation in both countries," Kelly recently said. "They're actually sort of the magic stagflation elixir. There are very few things that will actually give you a stagflationary impulse, which both slows growth and increases inflation."A global trade war is a frightening possibility that now seems increasingly realistic. Paraphrasing Mahatma Gandhi, Kelly said that "a tariff for a tariff will make the whole world poor."On the campaign trail, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/economy/trump-favors-huge-new-tariffs-how-do-they-work">Trump teased aggressive tariffs</a>: a 60% tax on Chinese goods and as much as a 20% upcharge on all other imports. When asked whether there was any chance that those proposals could be effective, the strategy chief had a simple answer that he didn't hedge."No," Kelly said. "I'm not trying to be political at all. I thought this was consensus, actually. I thought the biggest people in favor of free trade was the Republican party."Kelly later added: "I challenge anybody to show me a long-term study which shows that tariffs actually do promote stronger economic growth or stronger job growth domestically because I've never seen it."<h2 id="15c4690f-5250-4143-8288-a419b887c658">Why tariffs should be taken with a grain of salt</h2>Although Kelly is far from alone in his antipathy to tariffs, it's worth noting that most of his counterparts are much less concerned about that part of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-election-victory-impact-investments-costs-housing-taxes-childcare-2024-11">Trump's economic agenda</a>.One exception is Tom Orlik of Bloomberg Economics, who's firmly in Kelly's camp. The economist said at a conference his firm hosted in early October that Trump's tariffs <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/election-trump-harris-economy-inflation-stock-market-volatility-risk-orlik-2024-10">would cause "seismic shocks to the US economy"</a> by throttling growth and sparking inflation.But Chris Murphy, Susquehanna's cohead of derivatives strategy and a copanelist with Orlik, reasoned that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/election-trump-harris-economy-inflation-stock-market-volatility-risk-orlik-2024-10">Trump could always back away from tariffs</a> if the market reacted poorly to his proposals. Besides, Wall Street is far from frightened right now.Sean Gallagher, the global head of Lazard's small-cap equity platform, made a similar point in a recent interview with Business Insider when asked about Trump's tariffs and Kelly's stance."Often with Trump, the rhetoric and reality are not the same," Gallagher said. He added: "I don't know if all this rhetoric is going to match what's going to actually happen."The small-cap maven described himself as a free-market aficionado who's generally opposed to tariffs, including the ones that Trump outlined during his campaign. He said he'd prefer to avoid them, and he ventured that most Americans probably feel the same way.Ultimately, Gallagher thinks there will be some tariffs, though they may be more tempered than what Trump has floated. Inflation is a key reason Trump won, and he shouldn't forget that."We have to think about all the knock-on effects of tariffs, and his economic team will have to think about that as well," Gallagher said. "Trump's going to have to be, rightly, concerned about inflation. He's been talking about it too, how inflation's been a problem."Gallagher concluded: "We don't want to reignite inflation. I don't think anybody's for that."

The VIX usually hovers around 25 in October, Sandhu noted. For context, the volatility gauge usually stays between 10 and 20 and only rarely approaches 30.While the VIX is up 23% since late September, the so-called "fear index" is still under 20. That relatively muted volatility coincides with a strong stretch for US stocks. The S&amp;P 500 is trading near record highs after a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fed-cuts-interest-rates-how-much-september-fomc-powell-inflation-2024-9">larger rate cut</a> than many market participants expected.Considering the looming election and its impossible-to-predict implications, it's fair to wonder whether investors are being complacent. Traders who are feeling antsy may seek to hedge by buying <a target="_blank" href="https://www.investopedia.com/terms/p/putoption.asp">puts</a> or selling <a target="_blank" href="https://www.investopedia.com/terms/c/calloption.asp">calls</a>, especially since options premiums aren't overly pricey.Or, as Chris Murphy, the cohead of derivatives strategy at Susquehanna put it, investors may want "upside protection" so they're not caught offside if markets suddenly surge. Since volatility is in check, buying calls may pay off."We typically see a rally into year-end after the election," Murphy said. "There are opportunities there to protect yourself" from such an upswing without going all in, he added, like buying cheap calls.<h2 id="023e721c-202d-438b-8516-970d8bc4f050">One election result may cause 'seismic shocks'</h2>Partisans are convinced that this election is the most important ever, as they <a target="_blank" href="https://www.vox.com/21504729/most-important-election-bush-gore-kerry-trump">always</a> <a target="_blank" href="https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2020/11/most-important-election-of-our-lifetimes-history.html">are</a>. The market isn't convinced, judging by where the VIX is trading just a month away from election day.But Orlik of Bloomberg Economics disagrees. He foresees three plausible outcomes from next month's elections, including a potentially dangerous one.The status-quo outcome would be if Harris beats Trump and Congress remains divided. In that scenario, Orlik would expect continuity and similar economic policies as Joe Biden has had.Another positive result for investors could be if Trump wins and his second term is similar to his first, where taxes and regulations are kept at a minimum, Orlik said. He pointed out that this type of Republican presidency has historically been one of the best environments for US stocks and the economy."Implicit in the sanguine anticipation of the election from the financial markets is the baseline view that either it be continuity with Kamala Harris, or it'll be the small government," Orlik said.The third potential result is what has Orlik worried: a Trump term with "extreme" policies on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/economy/trump-favors-huge-new-tariffs-how-do-they-work">tariffs that he's floated</a> and deportation of undocumented immigrants."I don't think people are actually taking that possibility extremely seriously right now, but perhaps they should," Orlik said. "Because these would be seismic shocks to the US economy — an absolutely enormous impact on growth, an absolutely enormous impact on inflation, and an enormous impact on Fed policy."Tariffs are import taxes designed to make domestic goods relatively attractive while raising money for the government that issues them. However, many economists and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-invest-stock-market-international-investing-strategy-charles-schwab-2024-6">strategists hate them</a> because they can make all goods more expensive while hurting economic growth.Both Trump and Biden have implemented tariffs against rivals like China, but Orlik believes Trump's latest proposals — which include a 60% tariff on Chinese goods and a 20% tariff on all other imports — would devastate the US economy and corporations."Let's think about a world where Trump gets into power and poses a 60% tariff on China," Orlik said. "Can anyone think of a company — perhaps a company with a fairly large weight in US equity indexes that wouldn't be able to operate in a world of 60% US-China tariffs? I can think of a lot: Apple, Nvidia, Qualcomm — all of the companies big in the US equity indexes near record highs would basically not be able to operate their supply chains in a world of 60% US-China tariffs."Murphy isn't as concerned as Orlik since Trump could always backtrack on tariffs, but he still believes that investors should be on their toes heading into November 5."Trump sees the stock market tanking, and then does he go, 'I'm not doing this anymore because my stock market's tanking,' and he reverses very quickly," Murphy said. "So you have to monetize those tail hedges potentially pretty quickly, but a tail hedge like that could — in theory — be something that catches people off guard."
