All the state government's have been told to implement the new midday meal policy which includes milk. Earlier, the then HRD Ministry had revised its midday meal policy in 2016. In order to give better quality food to children in schools where midday meals are provided, the HRD has revised its norms, that include milk as a necessary supplement. WCD Minister <keyword id="6612" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smriti-Irani">Smriti Irani</keyword> on Monday assured Vice-President <keyword id="8563926" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="m-venkaiah">M Venkaiah</keyword> Naidu that the central government would consider recommending to all the states to "include milk in the midday meal scheme". Irani's assurance came after Naidu earlier in the day suggested to her to add milk in breakfast or midday meals of children to improve nutritional level. The Vice President spoke with Irani on the 3rd Rashtriya Poshan Maah aimed at contributing towards a malnutrition-free India. An official in the Education Ministry told IANS that all students from Classes 1 to 8 in all government schools will be given 200 ml milk every day along with the midday meals. As per the official, this policy as is similar to the one issued in 2016 and then HRD Ministry direction to states in 2018 in which many loopholes were reported in its implementation. The states were earlier also directed to include milk and milk products in the midday meals so that these items could be procured from cooperative milk unions or federations. The Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries Department also took up the issue with the state Chief Secretaries on December 15, 2017, requesting them to consider supplying milk and milk products through their network under midday meals scheme of the Centre. Karnataka, <keyword id="6355554" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Madhya-Pradesh">Madhya Pradesh</keyword>, Haryana, Puducherry, and Gujarat have confirmed supply of milk through schools but some states with higher surplus stocks of milk powder like Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Punjab are yet to decide in this regard. Almost two decades have passed since the midday meal became a part of the daily routine in government schools across the country. The central government had received complaints earlier on about inclusion of milk in midday meals. As per government norms, every child should receive 150-200 ml milk. However, there have been complaints that one litre of milk was mixed in a bucketful of water to serve to more than 80 children in a school in rural Uttar Pradesh. Milk to be 'integral' part of midday meal scheme soon

A group of paediatrics has written to the <keyword id="19905572" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra-government" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Maharashtra government" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Maharashtra government">Maharashtra government</keyword> urging it to stop giving sugary food items in <keyword id="22835936" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="school-midday-meals" source="keywords">school midday meals</keyword>. The Maha Academy of Paediatrics. in its letter to state school education minister Deepak Kesarkar, said such food items could result in <keyword id="19914811" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="children" source="keywords">children</keyword> becoming diabetic and obese. The letter cited the government's GR on serving rice pudding to children four times a week under the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman Yojana (formerly known as midday meal scheme). "The GR mentions that 25 grams of sugar be added to the meals of students from Class I to V and 45 grams for students from Class VI to VIII," the letter said. "We need 25 grams of sugar per day. There are two types of sugar. One is added and the other is naturally present in food items. The students keep eating other food items throughout the day, which increases their sugar intake," Maha Paediatrics Association president Dr Ramgopal Chejara told PTI. "Adding 25 grams and 45 grams of sugar in these meals could make the children diabetic and obese. Our teams have visited schools. We have appealed to the government to stop giving such sugary food items," he said. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve too criticised the state government over this GR. The state government thinks the future generation is a factory to digest excess sugar, he said in a post on X. The Union government is imposing restrictions on ethanol production, while at the same time excess sugar is being given to schoolchildren, said Danve, who is Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council. Middle East Laborers Are Being Forced To Rest For Hours Every Day

New Delhi, Dec 24 () Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Tuesday inaugurated a centralised new kitchen, supported by Swiss power major ABB India, to feed 21,000 children in government schools in the national capital.
"Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia inaugurated the Akshaya Patra Foundation's new centralised kitchen in Mohan Cooperative Industrial Area of New Delhi," ABB India said in a statement said.
According to the statement, the kitchen - sponsored by ABB India - has the capacity to cater to the nutrition needs of students through 25,000 midday meals across various government schools in the surrounding areas.
Initially, it will serve over 21,000 children of 24 government schools in the national capital and gradually extend its reach.
Mohan Cooperative kitchen will be the Akshaya Patra Foundation's 51st kitchen in the country.
From January 1, 2020, Akshaya Patra will begin operations in Mohan Cooperative Industrial Area, Jahangir Puri and Samaypur Badli, feeding 64,179 children across 134 schools in the national capital through these three kitchens.
ABB India's partnership with Akshaya Patra is over a decade old and has been expanding in line with the mission of Akshaya Patra to feed 5 million children by 2025.
Over the years, the support by ABB India towards Akshaya Patra has increased many folds from the Mid-Day Meal Programme to supporting a centralised kitchen. Experts say short naps are best for overall <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> and shouldn't be used to replace a full night of <keyword id="6372996" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sleep">sleep</keyword>.</li></ul>If you're a fan of lengthy daytime naps, you may want to rethink your habit, according to a meta-analysis <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2020-08/esoc-lnm082420.php">of research</a> presented today at the European Society of Cardiology's annual meeting.Though only the abstract of the study is currently available, the authors, who are from Guangzhou Medical University in China, shared preliminary findings, which suggested that naps for longer than an hour can increase a person's risk of heart disease and early death.The researchers looked at 20 previous studies on naps, heart disease, and death risk, including data on 313,651 people, of whom a third (39%) reported taking regular naps.They concluded that naps of any duration increased a person's risk of death by 19%, and said it could be because participants used naps as replacements for a full night of sleep, which is <a href="https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health-topics/sleep-deprivation-and-deficiency#:~:text=Sleep%20plays%20an%20important%20role,pressure%2C%20diabetes%2C%20and%20stroke.">essential for allover health</a>.But people who took long naps, of 60 minutes or longer, had the highest risk, they said. According to the study, those people were 30% more likely to suffer premature death, and 34% more likely to develop heart disease, than people who didn't nap at all.The study's findings build on existing research that suggest <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4592522/">long naps can contribute to inflammation</a>, <a href="https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/863445">high blood pressure</a>, and <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2831435/">diabetes</a>, according to lead study author Dr. Zhe Pan. Therefore, the study authors can't say there's a direct link between naps and heart disease or death risk.<h2>Naps shouldn't replace consistent full nights of sleep</h2>Other research has found <a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellness-and-prevention/can-a-nap-boost-brain-health">naps to be beneficial to brain function</a>, but it all depends on the duration of the nap and how it's being used.If a person consistently uses a nap to replace sleep lost during the night, it's likely their midday snooze is detrimental to their health."A common view is that napping improves performance and counteracts the negative consequences of 'sleep debt'. Our study challenges these widely held opinions," Pan, the new study author, said in a <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/emb_releases/2020-08/esoc-lnm082420.php">press release.</a>Indeed, the authors of a <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jgs.14368">December 2016 study</a> found naps between 30 and 60 minutes improved concentration and memory formation in adults who were 65 and older. <ul><li>The Indian government has asked schools — both in rural and urban areas — to set up <keyword id="769027" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="nutrition-gardens">nutrition gardens</keyword> to address undernourishment. </li><li>The initiative is aimed at promoting experiential learning at schools which instills the habit of growing vegetables and fruits. </li><li>Recently, the government added staple grains and vegetables to the <keyword id="50851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mid-day-meal">mid day meal</keyword> menu as the preferred food choice. </li><li>In India, over one third of the children below the age of five are stunted while over 40% are anaemic, Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey (CNNS).</li></ul>While India’s economic slowdown is hurting the children the most with starvation, the government has asked schools — both in rural and urban areas — to set up <a href="https://mhrd.gov.in/sites/upload_files/mhrd/files/SNG_Guidelines.pdf">nutrition gardens</a> to address undernourishment. The initiative is aimed at promoting experiential learning at schools and instill the habit of growing vegetables and fruits in students. According to the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD), eating a good diet is relative to the learning abilities of children. “They can provide fruit and vegetables rich in vitamins and minerals, add nutritional value to Mid-Day meals and increase the variety,” the guidelines said. In 1925, the Indian government introduced the Mid-day meal programme for underprivileged children to improve nutrition levels. The country has over 1.1 million government schools. And the move will especially benefit children from rural schools. Most of the meals of children is rich in grains which is subsidized, but they lack the key source of vitamins-vegetables. Now, the government too made a few amendments to its mid day meal menu, adding staple grains and vegetables among the preferred choices for meals. The mid day meal programme <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/education/mhrd-guidelines-soon-for-kitchen-gardens-in-govt-schools/article27003720.ece">covers 94.6 million children</a> across schools in India, and employs 2.5 million cooks and helpers, says BusinessLine. <keyword id="6378239" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="malnutrition">Malnutrition</keyword> in India According to the government’s <a href="https://www.indiaspend.com/5-indian-children-overweight-show-early-signs-of-diabetes-high-cholesterol/">Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey (CNNS)</a>, malnutrition among children caused several diseases including diabetes, <keyword id="22984" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="hypertension">hypertension</keyword> and chronic kidney disease.
