After Healthtech platform <keyword id="4951201" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="mfine" source="Orion">mFine</keyword> laid off over 50 per cent of its total workforce (more than 500 employees), <keyword id="2976227" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="prime-venture-partners" source="Orion">Prime Venture Partners</keyword> which is one of its existing investors said on Monday that this restructuring will give the platform an opportunity to pull through and continue to provide access to quality healthcare. mFine, which raised $48 million (over Rs 356 crore) in Series C funding co-led by <keyword id="10261757" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="moore-strategic-ventures" source="Orion">Moore Strategic Ventures</keyword> and BEENEXT with participation from existing investors like Prime Venture Partners in September last year, has let go half of its total workforce and the fired staff is from operations, product and marketing verticals, according to sources. More than 32,000 tech workers have been laid off in the US till July this year, including at Big Tech companies like <keyword id="10387" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="microsoft" source="Orion">Microsoft</keyword> and <keyword id="399907" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="meta" source="Orion">Meta</keyword> (formerly Facebook) and the worst has not been over yet for the tech sector that has seen massive stock sell-off. According to the data compiled by Crunchbase, more than 32,000 workers in the US tech sector have been laid off in mass job cuts, as of late July. "We've included both startups and publicly traded companies that are based in the US. We've also included companies based elsewhere that have a sizable team in the United States, such as Klarna," the analysis said. The layoff includes ride-sharing platform Uber, <keyword id="128682" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="netflix" source="Orion">Netflix</keyword> and several cryptocurrency exchanges and lending platforms. Robinhood, <keyword id="4522875" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="glossier" source="Orion">Glossier</keyword> and Better are just a few of the tech companies that have trimmed their headcount this year. Since April 1 this year, more than 43,000 workers from 342 tech companies/startups have been laid off across the world and over 13 per cent are from <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, according to latest data compiled by layoffs.fyi, a website that tracks layoffs in startups. In India, more than 25,000 startup workers have lost jobs since the pandemic began -- and more than 11,500 have been fired this year. Another <keyword id="1464841" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="edtech" source="Orion">edtech</keyword> startup <keyword id="4248184" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="udayy" source="Orion">Udayy</keyword>, backed by <keyword id="80004" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="info-edge" source="Orion">Info Edge</keyword>, has shut shop, laying off all 100 employees as schools, colleges and physical tuition centres reopen. Udayy's co-founder <keyword id="6553566" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="saumya-yadav" source="Orion">Saumya Yadav</keyword> said that the startup was witnessing the post-pandemic world for the first time as "as the kids went back to school, we faced roadblocks in growing the original model of online, live learning". "After a lot of deliberation, we decided that it's better to shut down the business than to spend more time and capital on it,a Yadav said. The development was first reported by startup news coverage portal Entrackr. The startup has paid employees severance packages and helped them find new jobs. "We are returning the remaining capital, around $8.5 million back to our investors," Yadav was quoted as saying in media reports. The live-learning platform catered to students from Grades 1 to 5. The platform raised $2.5 million in a seed funding round led by Alpha Wave Incubation (AWI), managed by <keyword id="4675626" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="falcon-edge-capital" source="Orion">Falcon Edge Capital</keyword> and <keyword id="12772224" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="infoedge-ventures" source="Orion">InfoEdge Ventures</keyword>. Udayy is the second edtech startup after Lido Learning to completely shut operations. Led by the edtech platforms, over 8,000 start-up employees have been recently hit by layoffs In India. This includes more than 1,000 employees at WhiteHat Jr, over 600 at Unacademy, over 424 at Vedantu and over 150 at Lido Learning. Another edtech firm FrontRow laid off nearly 150 full-time and contractual employees earlier this week. The Bengaluru-based non-academic upskilling startup fired almost 30 per cent of its workforce, owing to fund crunch and the market downturn. Apart from edtech firms, startups that have laid off employees in the past few months include social commerce platforms Trell (more than 300) and Meesho (150), used cars platform Cars24 (More than 600) and digital health platform Mfine (more than 500), among others.

Edtech startup 'Udayy' lays off all 100 employees as schools, and colleges physically reopen

<ul><li>Lok Sabha passed the <keyword id="6366282" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="General-Insurance">General Insurance</keyword> Business (Nationalisation) Amendment Bill, 2021 on August 2.</li><li>The bill seeks to remove the requirement of the union government holding not less than 51% of the equity capital in a specified insurer.</li><li>Now this bill will bring in higher private sector participation in government held <keyword id="35450" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="insurance">insurance</keyword> companies.</li><li>This is in relation to the finance minister’s budget speech where she mentioned that the government wants to privatise two public sector banks and one general insurance company.</li></ul>The General Insurance Business (Nationalisation) Amendment Bill, 2021 was passed by the Rajya Sabha on August 11. The bill seeks to remove the requirement that the union government should hold 51% stake in a specified general insurer. With this bill, the government will progress its divestment plans and privatise one of the general insurance companies. The government hopes that this will lead to more people getting insurance in the country. Right now, less than four in every 100 Indians have any kind of insurance. With the move, foreign investors will be able to hold up to 74% in the divested general insurance company. A report by <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/centre-to-scrap-51-holding-clause-to-privatise-insurer/articleshow/84747204.cms">Times of India</a> suggests that the government will privatise one of the general insurance companies from United India Insurance, National Insurance and Oriental Insurance. The Finance Minister had said in the budget it would privatise one of the public general insurance companies. This is in relation to India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s budget 2021-22 speech where she had announced a big ticket privatisation agenda, which included two public sector banks and one general insurance company. There are four general insurance companies in the public sector -- National Insurance Company, New India Assurance Company, Oriental Insurance Company and the United India Insurance Company. So what difference will this bill bring? Firstly, this bill will aid the government to sell stakes in some general insurance companies to private sector companies. To put it into perspective, although public sector insurance firms have a bigger market share in the insurance industry, they have a bad financial health which restricts them from offering low cost affordable insurance products. This eventually hinders the growth of insurance penetration in the country. With the private sector getting some control over such companies, they would be able to infuse capital and get things working. United India Insurance posted a net loss of ₹1,485 crore in 2019-20 while National Insurance Company posted a loss of ₹4,100 crore. Lack of capital made it difficult for insurers to expand their reach to unpenetrated regions. India’s insurance penetration stood at 3.76% in FY20, which is much lower against the global average of 7%, as per Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDAI) data. The low insurance penetration data tells that a large section of the country is still uninsured. New general insurance law will allow the government to privatise some state-owned insurers

New Delhi, Mar 21 () Ride-hailing firm Ola will offer a floater insurance cover of up to Rs 30,000 crore for its around 20 lakh registered driver partners and their spouses in case they are hit by coronavirus infection. "All eligible Ola driver-partners and their spouses shall be covered by a floater sum of Rs 30,000 under which they can receive a compensation of Rs 1,000 per day for a maximum of 21 days for an individual from the date of a positive diagnosis for COVID- 19," Ola said in a statement. Ola partners can claim for the cover for hospital as well as home quarantine prescribed by a qualified medical practitioner, as approved by the government norms from time to time."Drivers can make a claim for this compensation for themselves and (or) their spouse by providing appropriate medical documents. This coverage comes in with immediate effect and is available for all Ola driver-partners in India across all categories including Ola Bike, Ola Auto, Ola Rentals and Outstation," the company said. Ola currently operates in 250 Indian cities. The company has also partnered with online doctor consultation App, Mfine, to provide free medical help for driver-partners and their family members."The outbreak of COVID-19 poses a risk of impacting the health and livelihoods of millions across the country including that of our driver-partners and their families. Covid-19: Ola announces floater coverage of Rs 30,000 for 20 lakh driver partners

New Delhi, Apr 5 () Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant has written to over 92,000 NGOs appealing them to assist the government in identifying Covid-19 hotspots and delivering services to vulnerable groups. Kant, who is heading the Empowered Group (EG 6) on coordinating with private sector NGOs and international organisations, has also written to all chief secretaries urging them to instruct the local administration at the district level to utilise the physical and human resources made available by NGOs and civil society organisations (CSOs), an official statement said. The government had on March 29 constituted 11 empowered groups to suggest measures to ramp up healthcare, put the economy back on track and reduce misery of people as quickly as possible post the 21-day lockdown imposed to contain the coronavirus pandemic. "CEO Niti Aayog has written to over 92000 NGOs/ CSOs registered on the Darpan portal of Niti Aayog, appealing them to assist the government in identifying hotspots and deputing volunteers and care givers to deliver services to the elderly, persons with disabilities, children, transgender persons, and other vulnerable groups; to create awareness about prevention, social distancing, isolation, and combating stigma; to provide shelter to homeless, daily wage workers, and urban poor families; set up community kitchens for migrants," the statement said. It further said that the empowered group (EG 6) conducted detailed deliberations with 40-plus prominent CSOs and NGOs working in different parts of the country and with different communities. "Several challenges and issues raised by these CSOs were addressed by the EG6 to facilitate their working in the field during this crisis," it added. The statement said the EG6 has contacted start-ups, namely AgVa, Biodesign Innovation Lab, Kaeaenaat, Qure AIDrona Maps, mFine, MicroGo and Staqu, working on innovative ventilator designs, testing tools, and tracking solutions to understand their scale and possible contributions. Industry representatives and the EG 6 deliberated in detail on several challenges on critical issues of health-care intervention, pertaining to ramping up production and procurement of ventilators, personal protective equipment (PPE), testing kits, in collaboration with several other EGs; apart from ways to step up the relief and rehabilitation and information dissemination, it added. Industry representatives have also shared in detail the activities undertaken in public advocacy, philanthropy and, CSR by way of running factory kitchens for preparing, distributing free food in coordination with local administration; and making available factory hospitals/ premises/ guest houses as quarantine and shelter facilities. The other members of the Empowered Group include Dr Vijayaraghavan, (Principal Scientific Adviser), Kamal Kishore (Member, NDMA); Sandeep Mohan Bhatnagar (Member, CBIC) and senior officials of various ministries.
