Mumbai's first underground metro (Aqua Line) is starting from July 24, which will give new impetus to the speed of the city."<br /><br />This new metro line will cover a distance of 33.5 kilometres. Mumbai's first underground metro line will run through Colaba, <keyword id="19907248" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bandra" source="keywords">Bandra</keyword>, and <keyword id="20170419" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SEEPZ" source="keywords">SEEPZ</keyword> (Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone). Running a 33.5 km route from Aarey Colony to Cuffe Parade with 27 stops, it will transform urban transit, easing travel across Mumbai's streets and reducing traffic congestion.<br /><br />The new metro line will have stations at Cuffe Parade, Vidhan Bhavan, Churchgate, Hutatma Chowk, CST Metro, Kalbadevi, Girgaon, Grant Road, Mumbai Central Metro, Mahalaxmi, Science Museum, Acharya Atre Chowk, Worli, Siddhivinayak, Dadar, Shitladevi, Dharavi, BKC, Vidyanagari, Santacruz, Domestic Airport, Sahar Road, International Airport, Marol Naka, MIDC, SEEPs and Aarey Depot.<br /><br />Separately, in the last week of June this year, the government of Maharashtra decided to complete the <keyword id="21117856" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mumbai-Metro" source="keywords">Mumbai Metro</keyword> 3 project by the end of December 2024.<br /><br />The first phase of Mumbai Metro 3, will run between SEEPZ (Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone) and Bandra Kurla Complex. The project will be completed by the end of December 2024, which was initially scheduled to be completed by September 2024.<br /><br />During the cabinet meeting, Maharashtra's Chief Minister Eknath Shinde gave its nod to giving the state government's share of Rs 1,163 crore directly to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, instead of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for the completion of the project.<br /><br />According to the government, the project has achieved the completion of 98%  and its revised cost is Rs 37,275.50 crore. <br /><br />As per the information available on the website of Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, about 99.2% of civil works under the project have been completed. About 97% of the overall station construction has been completed. Under the project, tunnelling works have been fully completed, while 77.6% of overall systems work, depot civil works 99.8% and mainline track works have been completed almost 87%<br /><br />The introduction of the metro transportation system has witnessed a significant response in the city as the daily ridership of the Mumbai Metro has witnessed a significant increase. On July 24, 2023, the ridership reached 2,12,490, followed by 2,18,635 on July 25, 2023. The highest recorded ridership was on July 26, 2023, with 2,22,290 passengers. This surge in ridership has been observed specifically on the Metro 2A and 7 lines, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation said in a release.<br />

Mumbai's first underground metro line set to begin operations on July 24

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Hamas' infamous network of tunnels await Israeli forces should they invade the Gaza Strip.</li><li>Israel has referred to the underground labyrinth as the Gaza "metro" due to its size and depth.</li></ul><p>Israeli officials have vowed to crush Hamas in response to its brutal terror attacks earlier this month, signaling that the way to ultimately do this is through a major ground invasion of the Gaza Strip. That's easier said than done though.</p><p>In Gaza, invading Israeli forces will face a complex and dangerous urban environment, in which Hamas' well-armed and well-prepared forces can hide, set up traps, and launch surprise assaults. And some of the most difficult fighting could be underground, in the city-like labyrinth of tunnels that are vital to the militant group's defensive and offensive operations.</p><p>Although it is unclear how the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will go about dealing with challenges posed by the tunnels, they are a known threat and one for which the IDF is not unprepared. But while the military has the means to infiltrate this network, a former US Army infantry soldier said that in any capacity, "it will increase the time to conduct an operation in Gaza."</p><p>"You can't leave a hole to your back," John Spencer, chair of urban warfare studies at West Point's Modern War Institute, told Insider. "And you can't not clear a tunnel if there's a potential for a hostage to be in there."</p><p>Hamas claimed in 2021 to have more than <a href="https://www.jpost.com/breaking-news/hamass-sinwar-we-have-10000-terrorists-within-israel-669265">300 miles</a> of tunnels underneath Gaza, a densely populated coastal enclave that's roughly 140 square miles and home to around 2 million people. Israel has previously <a href="https://www.gov.il/en/Departments/General/operation-guardian-of-the-walls-10-may-2021">referred</a> to the subterranean network as the "metro," or "a vast underground city," due to its sheer size and depth.</p><p>The IDF <a href="https://www.idf.il/en/mini-sites/the-hamas-terrorist-organization/everything-you-need-to-know-about-hamas-underground-city-of-terror/">says</a> these tunnels are used to hide and store collections of weapons and ammunition, function as command centers and bunkers, and allow for the hidden movement and smuggling of militants and weapons both underneath Gaza and also into Israel. Access points, the military adds, are hidden inside places like schools, hospitals, and other civilian buildings. Israel has also accused Hamas of spending millions of dollars to construct its subterranean network and of diverting construction materials to the tunnels that could otherwise be used to build civilian infrastructure. </p><div type="image" title="A fighter from Izz al-Din al-Qassam stands in front of a tunnel during an exhibition of weapons, missiles and heavy equipment for the military wing of Hamas." height="3376" width="4592" msid="104565006" hostid="261" sizebytes="713166"></div><p>Much of the tunnel network is <a href="https://mwi.westpoint.edu/underground-nightmare-hamas-tunnels-and-the-wicked-problem-facing-the-idf/">narrow</a>, and some portions have been discovered to be over <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/230-feet-down-elite-idf-unit-reveals-deepest-hamas-tunnel-ever-found/amp/">200 feet deep</a>. Over the years, Israel has tried to get rid of the tunnels — <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/10/15/middleeast/hamas-tunnels-gaza-intl/index.html">reinforced by concrete</a> and equipped with electricity — but it's a daunting task. Egypt, which alongside Israel maintains a blockade of Gaza, has even <a href="https://www.wsj.com/livecoverage/israel-hamas-war-gaza-palestinians/card/how-hamas-s-network-of-tunnels-in-gaza-works-mdOdpXlhQLESQgNcZnFo">attempted to flood</a> the tunnels to curb their utility.</p><h2>An 'underground nightmare'</h2><p>Hamas, of course, isn't the first to use tunnels. During World War II, US Marines faced extensive Japanese tunnels in several battles across the Pacific, including on the island of Iwo Jima, and the American forces were forced to clear them with flamethrowers and hand grenades. Tunnels once again emerged as headaches for the US military a few years later during the Korean War, and then later on in the Vietnam War.</p><p>In Vietnam, the Vietcong forces built a huge network of tunnels — used as supply routes, to store ammunition, and to house infrastructure like hospitals — the largest among them being underneath a US base at Cu Chi. Contending with organized guerrilla attacks on the base, the American forces heavily bombed the subterranean labyrinth, but that wasn't enough. The military eventually sent soldiers known as "Tunnel Rats" down there. Lightly armed with a pistol and some other supplies, they faced threats like booby traps, animals, and enemy fighters.   </p><p>More recently, Western forces dealt with Islamic State and al-Qaeda tunnels in places like <a href="https://www.army.mil/article/6660/al_qaeda_tunnel_network_destroyed">Iraq</a> and <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2017/04/14/the-islamic-state-has-tunnels-everywhere-its-making-them-much-harder-to-defeat/">Afghanistan</a>. In 2017, the US famously <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/massive-us-bomb-in-afghanistan-killed-36-from-islamic-state-say-local-officials/2017/04/14/dae924e4-20dd-11e7-a0a7-8b2a45e3dc84_story.html?hpid=hp_hp-top-table-main_afghanbomb433am%3Ahomepage%2Fstory">dropped</a> one of the largest non-nuclear bombs it has — the GBU-43 Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB), or Mother of all Bombs — on a collection of ISIS-K tunnels and bunkers. </p><div type="image" title="Peshmerga fighters examine the entrance to a 150-meter-long tunnel dug by ISIS" height="1996" width="3000" msid="104565008" hostid="261" sizebytes="515158"></div><p>From a defensive perspective, Spencer said, Hamas can use its tunnels to protect all its assets that it doesn't want to lose, such as personnel, leadership, weapons, communication equipment, ammunition, and supplies. The group could also use them to move the 200 hostages it abducted from Israel during the October 7 attacks. </p><p>"It takes away Israel's all-seeing eye and strike capability, because it can't hit that far in the ground," Spencer said. Israel has been heavily bombing Gaza, dropping thousands of bombs on targets in the strip, but the tunnels are harder targets that are not as easily destroyed as surface structures.</p><p>Offensively, the tunnels give Hamas the ability to conduct surprise attacks on IDF forces, Spencer said. This includes those close in and farther away because the tunnels are connected to rocket launch points, such as pre-set setups that are buried and are only revealed at the last moment when a rocket is autonomously fired. In other cases, rockets are brought to a site and fired off before the militants head back underground.</p><p>Hamas can also use the tunnels to just pop up near IDF forces in a style of guerilla warfare that comes as a complete surprise and retreat quickly before the Israelis can effectively return fire. </p><p>"Pop up, attack, pop back down in the ground, live to fight another day, move to a different location, and hit them on the other side," Spencer said of how Hamas could use the tunnels for attacks, likening them to gopher or mouse holes.</p><p>Many IDF soldiers are trained in advance for basic tunnel warfare, but the military still has several added capabilities to address the challenges in Gaza. One is the Combat Engineering Corps' <a href="https://www.idf.il/en/mini-sites/the-hamas-terrorist-organization/this-is-the-idf-s-plan-to-combat-hamas-terror-tunnels/">Yahalom Unit</a>, an elite band of commandos that consists of several different specialized companies handling engineering reconnaissance, non-conventional weapons, explosive ordinance disposal, and tunnel warfare.</p><div type="image" title="Members of Al-Quds Brigades, an armed wing of Islamic Jihad Movement, keep guard at tunnels on Gaza-Israeli border against a possible attack by Israeli forces in Gaza City, Gaza on March 30, 2023." height="1667" width="2500" msid="104565010" hostid="261" sizebytes="470590"></div><p>The IDF also has other tools at its disposal as well for fighting in the tunnels, such as night-vision systems, drones and robots, ground and aerial sensors, radio technologies, drilling equipment, and more, Spencer wrote in an <a href="https://mwi.westpoint.edu/underground-nightmare-hamas-tunnels-and-the-wicked-problem-facing-the-idf/">analysis</a> this week. But the biggest problem facing the IDF is the sheer scale of the tunnel network, and there is no silver bullet to mitigate this issue.</p><p>"In this situation, it's not just finding the tunnels that's the issue," Spencer said, adding that Israeli forces can't simply locate the problem, "blow it up," and keeping moving. "You don't know what's down there, because Hamas uses human shields, because Hamas has a hundred-plus hostages — that's going to exponentially challenge this normal underground nightmare."</p><p>The tunnel issue, of course, is not the only challenge that Israeli soldiers will face in an invasion of Gaza. The urban environment — which tends to favor whoever is on defense — in the enclave will make for a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/israel-invasion-gaza-root-out-hamas-would-be-nasty-fight-2023-10">difficult and nasty fight</a>, characterized by sneak attacks, traps, and other guerrilla tactics. It's something no military seeks to find itself doing, a former senior US intelligence officer told Insider, as the risk to civilians and soldiers alike are grave. </p><p>In preparation for what Israeli officials have indicated will be a ground invasion, the country's air force continues to pound Gaza with bombs as it has done every day since the initial Hamas attacks on October 7, which killed at least 1,300 people — mostly civilians — and injured over 4,200 more. The relentless aerial campaign, which has leveled entire neighborhoods, has killed over 3,000 Palestinians and injured another 12,500, according to the latest United Nations <a href="https://www.ochaopt.org/content/hostilities-gaza-strip-and-israel-flash-update-11">figures</a>. </p>

Israeli soldiers could end up fighting through an 'underground nightmare' in an invasion of Gaza, home to Hamas' infamous 'metro' of tunnels

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="12683050" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="breeze-airways" source="Orion">Breeze Airways</keyword> announced nine new <keyword id="12020592" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="routes" source="Orion">routes</keyword> on Wednesday, four of which will fly cross-country.</li><li>Westchester Airport in White Plains, New York, will get eight new routes to places like Savannah and Jacksonville.</li></ul><p>Low-cost <keyword id="11897892" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="startup" source="Orion">startup</keyword> <keyword id="12807773" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="breeze" source="Orion">Breeze</keyword> Airways announced on Wednesday that it is launching nine all-new routes this year, eight of which are from New York's Westchester County Airport in White Plains, which is located about 30 miles north of Manhattan.</p><p>Breeze, which was founded by <keyword id="12018329" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="aviation" source="Orion">aviation</keyword> entrepreneur and JetBlue Airways founder David Neeleman, will soon become the only airline flying nonstop from White Plains to three West Coast cities using its sleek new A220 aircraft.</p><p>"This is exciting <keyword id="11893589" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news" source="Orion">news</keyword> for Westchester County residents who are eager to have convenient flights to the West Coast," Westchester County Department of Public works and <keyword id="11894924" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation" source="Orion">transportation</keyword> commissioner Hugh Greechan <a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20220420005677/en/Ease-Meets-West-David-Neeleman-is-Back-in-the-New-York-Groove">said in a press release</a>. "We look forward to our residents flying with ease in a 'nice' environment."</p><p>Neeleman said he is excited about the amount of time passengers will save driving to White Plains versus other New York City area airports.</p><p>"I wasted tons of time driving to JFK or Newark to <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword> to the West Coast," he said. "Now we'll offer daily flights to the highest demand markets from New York, with the state-of-the-art Airbus A220 aircraft."</p><p>The carrier has ordered 80 new A220-300s from Airbus, with one delivery per month planned over the next six years. A total of 13 will be welcomed into the fleet by the end of 2022, according to Breeze.</p><p>The single-aisle plane features three fare options, including Nice, Nicer, and Nicest. Nicest includes 36 first-class seats, making it an attractive option for business or deep-pocket leisure travelers wanting to fly to the top two destinations from the New York metro area — Los Angeles and San Francisco.</p><div type="image" title="Breeze Nice, Nicer, and Nicest fare bundles." height="719" width="1095" msid="90965738" hostid="261"></div><p>Breeze's A220 Nice and Nicer fare bundles include 80 standard seats and 10 extra legroom seats, respectively. Although, New Haven-based <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-avelo-breeze-routes-from-connecticut-highlight-low-cost-battle-2022-3">Avelo Airlines currently operates the most nonstops from Connecticut</a> with 13 destinations.</p><p>Also added to Breeze's route map is a new nonstop between Savannah, Georgia, and New Orleans, Louisiana. Moreover, passengers can book a one-stop flight between Westchester and New Orleans with a layover in Savannah.</p><p>Neeleman told Insider that the company calls the routing "breeze throughs," and is only on select routes where the plane is continuing on to another destination. On these routes, passengers will not deplane at the layover airport.</p><p>Both routes will be operated by Breeze's Embraer 190 and 195 aircraft, which feature an all-economy cabin of regular and extra legroom seats. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Ukrainians sang patriotic songs as they sheltered together while Russia attacked the country with missile strikes Monday. </li><li>Online videos showed children singing in a bomb shelter in Kyiv, as well as others singing in metro stations in the city. </li></ul><p>As Russia targeted Ukraine in a series of deadly missile strikes on Monday, defiant Ukrainian adults and children sang songs as they sheltered together from the attacks, touching videos show.</p><p>Children in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv belted out the country's national anthem as they huddled in a bomb shelter while the city was under assault, <a href="https://twitter.com/olex_scherba/status/1579375997971202048">according to a clip</a> posted to Twitter by former Ukrainian diplomat Olexander Scherba.</p><p>Other online videos showed hordes of people standing closely together singing the Ukrainian folk song "In the Cherry Orchard" as they gathered inside a metro station in Kyiv during the missile strike. </p><p>Ukraine's defense ministry shared one of the clips on Twitter, saying that the eastern European country's "spirit is unbreakable."</p><p>"Residents of Kyiv sing in a metro station during an air raid alert," the ministry said. </p><p>As they sheltered in the underpass of the Nyvky metro station in Kyiv, locals also sang the patriotic Ukrainian song called "Oh, the Red Viburnum in the Meadow" video showed.</p><p>The song has become hugely popular and a symbol of Ukrainian resistance ever since <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-attacks-ukraine-launching-new-war-in-europe-2022-2">Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his unprovoked war on Ukraine</a> nearly eight months ago. </p><p>Another clip posted to Twitter showed people singing the official anthem of Kyiv as they hunkered down inside a metro station in the Ukrainian capital. </p><p>The Russian military on Monday <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-attacks-multiple-ukrainian-cities-after-bridge-blast-in-crimea-2022-10">launched a barrage of deadly strikes on cities across Ukraine</a>, including Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipro, Vinnytsia, and Zaporizhzhia. </p><p>It was the first time Kyiv was struck by Russian forces in months amid the war. </p><p>Putin said on Monday that the attacks were retaliation after the Kerch Strait Bridge, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/putin-allies-push-for-retaliation-after-crimea-bridge-blast-humiliation-2022-10">a key supply route</a> connecting Russia and Crimea, was damaged in a blast on Saturday.</p><p><em>Translations by Oleksandr Vynogradov</em></p>

Manappuram Finance has been fined for non-compliance with directions issued by RBI on verification of ownership of gold jewellery<br /><br />The shares of Muthoot Finance ended 1% lower on Thursday, whereas Manappuram Finance lost nearly 2%. <br /><br /><strong>South Indian Bank<br /></strong><br />South Indian Bank announced that the Marginal Cost of Funds Based Lending Rates (MCLR) for multiple tenors had been revised from November 20. Mumbai, Feb 19 () No-frills carrier SpiceJet on Wednesday said it will launch 20 new flights on its domestic routes, including some services under the government's regional connectivity scheme, Udan, from late next month as part of the airline's summer schedule.<p> The new flights, starting from March 29, include services to Patna from Amritsar, Varanasi and Guwahati. Besides, it will also launch flights on  Hyderabad-Mangaluru, Bengaluru-Jabalpur and Mumbai-Aurangabad routes, all under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), for the first time on its network, the airline said in a release.</p><p> The new services will fly daily and will be operated by a mix of Boeing 737-800 and Bombardier Q400 aircraft, it stated.</p><p> These services will enhance connectivity between key metros and smaller cities, it said.</p><p> With the commencement of these new flights,  the airline will have a total of 52 flights connecting 12 cities under the RCS scheme, SpiceJet said.</p><p> "We are excited to announce the launch of 20 new domestic flights. As we add newer cities and flights to our network, our focus remains firmly on connecting the unconnected parts of the country besides enhancing connectivity between metros and non-metros," SpiceJet Chief Commercial Officer Shilpa Bhatia was quoted as saying in the release.</p><p> SpiceJet said it will also enhance its operations with additional frequencies on the Mumbai-Bagdogra and Mumbai-Chennai routes with the addition of a second and fifth flight, respectively..</p> The Hyderabad-Mangaluru and Guwahati-Delhi sectors would also have an additional flight in the summer schedule.
