<ul><li>Investors looking to participate in India’s ecommerce story will need to keep in mind that the valuation will continue to be premium even for those startups that are turning in a small profit.</li><li>For better monetisation, <keyword id="3480589" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="meesho" source="Orion">Meesho</keyword> is also entering categories where brands tend to do well. It currently offers brands like Decathlon, Marico and Nivea on its platform.</li><li>It is also exploring a low-cost grocery model in some smaller cities, which it plans to scale if unit economics justify the investments. </li></ul> Meesho, a horizontal ecommerce player that caters to unorganised sellers, has its task cut out before its public listing 12-18 months down the line. The marketplace will not repeat the mistakes some of its new age peers made while tapping public markets. The marketplace may be the first horizontal ecommerce platform to turn profitable, but it is just the beginning of an arduous journey, given that many investors have burnt their fingers by investing in IPOs of new age companies. Share prices have not kept up with the hype that surrounded these companies, which suggests that investors will not chase such pricey companies no matter how fast they are growing. So how different will Meesho be from the other new age tech platforms that tapped public markets? In conversation with Business Insider, Meesho’s chief financial officer Dhiresh Bansal said they have reflected on the experiences of investors who participated in IPOs in 2021 and 2022. The key takeaway is that valuations were high because there was a lot of free money floating around. He says: “But public market investors are focused on profitable growth. Our point of view is that we want to make sure we run a decent track record of profitable growth if we aspire to get listed. We are targeting to grow revenues by 40% and accelerate it a little more by putting investments back, but we will continue to be profitable.” Clearly, the new mantra for startups today is to be profitable but the size and scale of the profit pool will not impress if compared to the larger companies. Investors looking to participate in India’s ecommerce story will need to keep in mind that the valuation will continue to be premium even for those startups that are turning in a small profit. Call it a scarcity premium, if you will. Explains Bansal: “The investment phase of the company in the new age world is slightly longer but they generate very large pools of cash over a period of time. This is true for unprofitable or small profit companies.” Bansal cites examples of some companies in the US that had a small profit pool to report when they got listed a decade ago. But now these companies churn out large amounts in profits. Therefore, these new age companies cannot be compared to traditional companies. Bansal says that even as fixed costs remain the same over a period of time, on a higher base these companies tend to generate a lot more in profits. Currently, Meesho has 140 mn users who visit the app every month and 40 mn, who open the app everyday. With a revenue growth target of 40% year-on-year, Meesho believes it can earn more without fixed costs going up. In addition to controlling costs and boosting operational efficiency, Meesho is also tweaking its categories and model to earn more in some categories. Even though it continues to largely be a platform for unorganised/small sellers from across India, you can find some brands too as the platform provides a differentiated experience to branded players too. Says Bansal, “Our business is largely unbranded, but we have introduced brands in some categories. We have brands like Decathlon, Marico, Nivea and other D2C brands in the marketplace other than brands in the beauty and personal care category.” Monetisation in these categories is much better than the unbranded segments. The cashburn may have slowed and Meesho’s business may be cashflow positive, but a public listing will not just look at raising fresh capital. The issue will be a mix of fresh issue of shares and offer for sale by existing shareholders. Explains Bansal: “We don’t need fresh capital for growth as we have almost $400 mn in the bank. People will decide whether they want to exit or remain on for a longer period— but It will be a mix of primary and secondary offering at the IPO but it will be largely towards secondary.” This suggests that existing investors will look at a partial exit whenever Meesho hits the public market. The platform is also experimenting with other categories as it looks to diversify from its existing mainstay – apparel, beauty and kitchenware. Meesho wants to sell consumers everything but smartphones, electronics and groceries. Adds Bansal: “We have been experimenting with groceries and beyond the convenience model that works in metro and Tier 1 cities but there is a low priced model of groceries that can work in Tier1 and Tier 2 cities. We are running pilots and once we are sure about the unit economics we will scale the business.”

Key facts to know before Meesho’s IPO hits the market

Meesho noted that it witnessed nearly a five-fold increase in the number of orders during its one-day sale this year, compared to 1 million orders in its 2021 sale. The company also claimed that 8 out of 10 orders came from Tier 2 markets like Bhilal, Guntur, Hubli, Kollam, Meerut and Port Blair. Top categories to witness the highest growth during the sale were Apparel, Kidswear, Consumer Electronics and Home Decor. Meesho claimed that nearly 1 lakh sellers have participated in the recent sale – and 3 out of 4 were from Tier 2+ regions like Bathinda, Haldwani, Solapur and Tirunelveli among others. “Participating sellers witnessed ~217% increase in orders during the sale event compared to business-as-usual (BAU),” the company added. About 26,000 sellers participated in Meesho’s sale for the first time. “Despite rising inflation and macroeconomic conditions, we hit an all-new record of 5.35 million orders during the one-day sale event, serving over ~20,000+ pincodes. In the last 6 months, we have witnessed a ~3.75X jump in seller participation in sale events,” Utkrishta Kumar, CXO of Business at Meesho, said. Founded in 2015 by Vidit Aatrey and Sanjeev Barnwal, Meesho is an ecommerce company that has raised over a billion dollars till date. The company’s investors include Meta (formerly known as Facebook), SoftBank, Trifecta Capital Advisors, Fidelity Management and Research Company and others. The company — whose mobile app has been downloaded 102 million times — was valued at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/meesho-raises-more-than-half-a-billion-dollars-in-the-fourth-biggest-funding-round-this-year/articleshow/86636161.cms">$4.9 billion </a>in September 2021. It claims to have over 44 million products listed on its platform. Meesho competes with other ecommerce giants Amazon, Flipkart and Reliance’s JioMart. Although JioMart was founded four years after Meesho, the company was operating under the social commerce industry then. The company pivoted to the social commerce model only last year. India's youngest ecommerce giant received more than 60 orders every second during its one-day sale

The IPO is a complete offer for sale by promoters and will raise ₹560 crore with a price band of ₹308-₹326 per share. The airport service aggregator began operations in 2013 facilitating airport lounge access services and has now become an end-to-end technology solutions provider. Covid restrictions have severely impacted the airport service provider’s financials however it is now recovering from the lows as the travel industry has picked up and is busy as pre covid. “The air travel industry has, in the recent past, been buffeted by the COVID-19 pandemic which has adversely impacted our operations. Further, the travel industry is also generally affected by various factors such as increase in the fuel price, government policies applicable, in particular, to the airline industry, failure of airlines etc. Accordingly, any downturn in the travel industry, in general, and in the air travel industry, in particular, could adversely impact our results of operations and our financial condition,” said the company in its red herring prospectus. According to the directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA), prior to covid in the last five years between 2015-2019 the CAGR for the domestic air travel industry was noted to be 12%. The global aviation sector that had taken a hit due to the lockdowns is now in the revival phase. ”The Global airlines are planning to resume their long-haul routes, specially driven. This holds good for the Indian domestic market also; it is interesting to note that a few Indian Tier-2 and Tier-3 airports have surpassed the Pre-COVID traffic numbers,” said the company in its RHP. Currently, it has tie-ups with Visa, Master Card, Diners/Discover and RuPay card networks operating in India. Other key clients include ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HDFC Bank (in respect of debit card lounge program), and SBI Cards and Payment Services. DreamFolks is heavily dependent on the cards that are in circulation and on issuance of new credit cards and debit cards. Out of an estimated 5.2 million passengers using lounges in India, more than 80% passengers use credit cards or debit cards to access domestic lounges. Further, there are expectations of strong economic recovery resulting in more travel through air routes and airport services. Airport services aggregator DreamFolks Services IPO to open on August 24, price band at ₹308-₹326 apiece

<ul><li>Even after the <keyword id="6473060" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="syrma" source="Orion">Syrma</keyword> SGS IPO received an overwhelming response, experts believe that another IPO season is not on the horizon.</li><li>The regulatory approval for at least 30 IPOs received in the last financial year will lapse by the end of the year. 31 IPOs received an approval this financial year.</li><li>Companies will watch the performance of the next few IPOs and the secondary markets before opening issues, say two market experts that Business Insider spoke to. </li></ul>Even before the public offer of <keyword id="14738256" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="syrma-sgs-tech" source="Orion">Syrma SGS Tech</keyword> was oversubscribed 33 times last week, three companies – Digit General Insurance, Concord Biotech and <keyword id="1126663" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="balaji-solutions" source="Orion">Balaji Solutions</keyword> – had filed their papers with the markets regulator in the third week of August to go public. Another IPO DreamFolks is all set to open for subscription this week. Yet, experts are not convinced that another IPO season is on the horizon. “It’s too early to say that the season of IPOs has started. A lot of companies in the pipeline will be watching for two things – the response that the next few IPOs get and also the market momentum. If the markets remain volatile, companies will allow their approvals to lapse,” Pranav <keyword id="3517398" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="haldea" source="Orion">Haldea</keyword>, managing director of Prime Database told Business Insider India. While a few companies like PharmEasy, Inox Green Energy and <keyword id="12727880" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nandan-terry" source="Orion">Nandan Terry</keyword> withdrew their draft papers, scrapping IPO plans, at least four more companies’ approvals will lapse by the end of August. The approvals for another 15 will lapse by the end of the year. “IPOs are a once-in-a-lifetime event for companies and they would want to do it at the perfect time. If the market is not giving them the valuation that they expect, they will not go ahead,” said Haldea. Only <keyword id="4093871" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="utkarsh-small-finance-bank" source="Orion">Utkarsh Small Finance Bank</keyword> has re-filed its IPO papers, even as many more companies that planned to go for an IPO in the last financial year let it lapse. Over 32 IPOs that received a go ahead in 2021-22 have been put on hold, while 31 more received an approval in 2022-23. Of these 31 from the current financial year, only Syrma and DreamWorks have gone ahead and opened their issues to the public. A lot of companies file DRHPs assuming issues will sail through but a number of factors like valuations and demand for fresh issuances among domestic and foreign investors play a key role. “There are 10-12 conditions that they have in mind during the filing and many of these conditions may change,” said Arun <keyword id="6358183" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kejriwal" source="Orion">Kejriwal</keyword>, founder of Kejriwal Research &amp; Investment Services. A lot of IPOs from last year that are still in the pipeline, had issue sizes between ₹400-800 crore. However there are a few like Emcure <keyword id="6363818" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pharma" source="Orion">Pharma</keyword> which had plans to raise over ₹4,500 crore as well. The decision to go ahead with an IPO will not depend on the size of the issue, but on pricing, says Kejriwal. “When the momentum is good, subscriptions and listings are good, it’s possible to slip in a bad issue but not when the market is still picking up. After <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword> capped the amount that HNIs (high networth individuals) can borrow to invest in IPOs to ₹1 crore, they will have to invest their own funds and that will make a huge difference to subscriptions,” says Kejriwal. The disappointing market debut of Life Insurance Corporation, one of the most anticipated IPOs, and its continued underperformance, down 18 percent since its debut in May, has made more companies wary of going ahead with an IPO this year. “Tech IPOs, which saw a frenzy of activity last year, have delivered a disappointing performance for investors. We expect limited movement in IPO markets in the near term as investors try to rebuild conviction on digital stocks,” DC Advisory added. As Zomato, Paytm and new-age start-ups struggle at bourses, their unlisted peers stare at funding winter

"Tata Power plans to have a renewable power portfolio of 10,000 MW in the state of Rajasthan in the next five years," a company statement said. Participating in the ongoing Invest Rajasthan summit in Jaipur, it stated that it plans to develop up to 8,000 MW of utility-scale projects, 1,000 MW of solar rooftops and 1,50,000 solar pumps in the next five years in the state. Tata Power, along with its fully-owned subsidiary <keyword id="12146018" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata-power-solar" source="Orion">Tata Power Solar</keyword>, will expand its presence in the state to generate clean energy through solar power. The company employs more than 4,500 people in the state, and its expansion projects will generate employment for more than 6,000-8,000 people in the next five years. Rajasthan is an important state for Tata Power's renewable business. It presently has a portfolio of 4,939 MWp. To date, Tata Power has commissioned 2,066 MW in Rajasthan and around 2,873 MW capacity of solar projects are under construction, which will be completed in the next 12-24 months. TP Ajmer Distribution Ltd, a unit of Tata Power, has completed 5 years of operations and has enhanced the consumer experience in Ajmer. Tata Power has ensured safe and reliable supply in Ajmer and also achieved AT&amp;C (Aggregate Technical and Commercial) loss reduction from 22 per cent to 9 per cent. Through its various rooftop offerings, Tata Power has installed over 20 MW of rooftops for these industries. These installations have resulted in cumulative savings of about Rs 20 crore per annum for customers. Tata Power is also working towards setting up a robust EV charging infrastructure in the state to enable the faster transition towards electric mobility. While almost 46% of all transactions belonged to Myntra during the 2020 festive period, Ajio bagged around 69% of all transactions in 2021. The share of Myntra’s active users, also using Meesho, Ajio, and TataCliq has also increased significantly, indicating how users are exploring multiple options this year. The battle of the e-commerce legends, Amazon, and Flipkart is worth noting, with Flipkart’s active user base rising 83% in 2021 online shopping festival compared to Amazon’s 72%. Despite the fact that Flipkart is dominating in terms of engagement metrics like search frequency and active sessions, Amazon is winning in terms of transactions, significantly less average session times. <ul><li>The 30-stock <keyword id="6484188" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sensex" source="Orion">Sensex</keyword> closed 92 points higher at 61,511 while the <keyword id="2931774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nifty50" source="Orion">Nifty50</keyword> ended the day 23 points up at 18,267.</li><li>Investors are awaiting the <keyword id="6356435" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="us-federal-reserve" source="Orion">US Federal Reserve</keyword>’s meeting minutes due today that will provide signals to other central banks, say market experts.</li><li>Apollo Hospitals, JSW Steel, SBI, HDFC Life, and Bajaj Finance were the top gainers on the Nifty50 index.</li><li>On the BSE, there were more advances than declines – 1,854 stocks gained while 1,643 stocks ended the day in the red.</li></ul>Indian benchmark indices Nifty50 and Sensex closed higher on Wednesday, albeit with marginal gains, ahead of the monthly expiry of the F&amp;O segment on Thursday. PSU banks, oil &amp; gas, and metals pushed the benchmark indices higher. The 30-stock Sensex closed 92 points higher at 61,511 while the Nifty50 ended the day 23 points up at 18,267. The PSU banks index continued on its upward trajectory with gains of 1.02%, while the Nifty Media index gained the most today with an increase of 1.14%. Banks, financial services, and pharma were other notable gainers today. Asian markets also closed in the green with Japan’s Nikkei 225 closing up 0.61%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng going up 0.57% and China’s Shanghai SE Composite Index closing 0.26% higher. Meanwhile, all eyes were on the US Federal Reserve’s meeting minutes due today that will provide signals to other central banks. The US Fed has so far raised interest rates six times, totaling 375 basis points. “Interestingly, FII purchases in the last several weeks have lifted the sentiment as well in the cash market. The Nifty VIX closed at 14.04, and we anticipate that Nifty will remain more range-bound over the next few days. The trend of unexpected surprises in inflation figures persisted, but the market once again adopted the adage ‘bad news is good news’,” said a report by Choice Broking. All agricultural, industrial manufacturing, production activities will be allowed but private offices, places of worship, restaurants, bars, pubs, cinemas, malls, shopping plazas, beauty parlours or gents salons, beaches, gardens, playgrounds, swimming pools, sports complexes, amusement parks, and other crowded places shall be shut. <keyword id="6356789" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="gurugram">Gurugram</keyword>, With 1,940 new cases being reported in Gurugram in the last four days, the city is witnessing a sharp increase in daily positive cases. On Sunday, 555 new corona-infected patients were detected, with one death, and 210 recoveries. On April 3, the city recorded 606 Covid cases which is the highest figure this year. At present 2,972 patients are undergoing treatment at different private and government health facilities and around 2,770 patients are in home isolation. Till now, the <keyword id="409297" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="district-health-department">district health department</keyword> has examined around 9,60,836 people. The total number of corona-infected patients in Gurugram is 64,953, of which 61,641 have recovered. So far in the past one year, 367 patients have died due to the <keyword id="10860" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Virus">virus</keyword>. "We are setting up a large corona screening camp every day in places where the number of patients is more. Use face masks when stepping outside. The reason for the increasing number of patients is because they are not wearing masks and are not taking precautions. Those who are thinking they will not get infected with the deadliest virus, are contributing in spreading the coronavirus," Virender Yadav, Chief Medical Officer, Gurugram told .
