A robot developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras to help eliminate <keyword id="6390598" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manual-scavenging" source="Orion">manual scavenging</keyword> in India, is all set for field deployment, the institute said on Thursday. Ten units of the robot named '<keyword id="12828292" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="homosep" source="Orion">HomoSEP</keyword>' will be first deployed across Tamil Nadu, and later in Gujarat and Maharashtra. "The septic tank is a poisonous environment, filled with semi-solid and semi-fluid human faecal material that make up about two-thirds of the tank. Hundreds of deaths are reported every year across India, due to manual scavenging in septic tanks despite bans and prohibitory orders," said Prof. Prabhu Rajagopal, from Department of Mechanical Engineering, <keyword id="6356755" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-madras" source="Orion">IIT Madras</keyword>, in a statement. HomoSEP was first developed in 2019 as a final year Masters' project by Divanshu Kumar under the guidance of Prof. Rajagopal. Despite the pandemic-related difficulties over the next couple of years, the IIT Madras researchers collaborated with an IIT Madras-incubated start-up Solinas Integrity Private Limited (now headed by Kumar) to further develop HomoSEP. The path-breaking project was also supported first by several CSR donors over the years. The HomoSEP Robot can homogenise the hard sludge in septic tanks through custom-developed rotary blade mechanism and pump the tank slurry using an integrated suction mechanism. Sanitation workers will be able to operate the HomoSEP on their own, after being provided with the relevant training and appropriate guidance along with necessary safety measures, both of which our team is working on right now. IIT Madras to deploy robot to clean septic tanks in Tamil Nadu and end manual scavenging

 The campaign urges citizens to segregate waste at the source, to make the lives of the conservancy workers better, more dignified. It is a part of an on-going initiative of the Trusts -- Mission Garima -- to promote safe, healthy and humane working conditions for conservancy workers in Mumbai. Under Mission Garima, the Trusts have identified and procured technologies to make the process for waste management more mechanical, and reduce human intervention. Tata Trusts has provided improved Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to more than 150 conservancy workers in Mumbai, in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM). The launch of the campaign will further see the distribution of more sets of PPE at a first- of-its-kind model chowki at L-ward, Kurla, jointly inaugurated by Tata Trusts and MCGM. Chowkis are facilities in every ward where cleanliness workers assemble to begin their day, and come back to change and rest. The first-of-its kind model chowki in Kurla comprises office space, separate rooms for men and women staff with improved water and sanitation services, storage, and a functional open space. It will be equipped with amenities like a water purification system, microwave oven, a gym, among other recreational activities. <ul><li>Although banned in the 1990s, manual cleaning of <keyword id="79680" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sewers">sewers</keyword> continues till date.</li><li>To help eradicate this, the Modi government has announced that it is working with urban local bodies to use technology to clean sewer systems.</li><li>Further, the government also announced ₹85,000 crore provision for the upliftment of scheduled caste and other backward classes, along with ₹53,700 crore for scheduled tribes.</li></ul>Indian finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that there will be no manual cleaning of sewers anymore. The government has identified suitable technologies and equipment for this task, and that it is working with local bodies for the adoption of these technologies. “Our government is determined that there shall be no manual cleaning of sewer systems and septic tanks. Suitable technologies for such tasks have been identified by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs,” the Finance Minister said. To make sure this policy is carried out effectively, she said that the ministry is “working with urban local bodies for the adoption of these technologies”. She further announced that the policy will be taken to its “logical conclusion” through legislative and institutional changes. Manual cleaning of sewer systems and septic tanks is a dangerous task and has claimed hundreds of lives. According to data provided by the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis, 123 workers were <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/official-data-shows-one-manual-scavenging-death-every-five-days-5361531/">reported</a> to have died between January 2017 and September 2018. “There will be no manual cleaning of sewers anymore,” announces Nirmala Sitharaman

The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment has been allocated Rs 13,539 crore in the 2024-2025 budget, an increase of 37 per cent from the 2023-2024 revised estimates of Rs 9,853.32 crore. This increase is primarily focused on enhancing <keyword id="20312810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="welfare-programmes" source="keywords">welfare programmes</keyword> for <keyword id="21384605" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="marginalised-communities" source="keywords">marginalised communities</keyword> and improving infrastructure for social services. The key areas of funding include Rs 9,549.98 crore for the 'Umbrella Scheme for Development of Scheduled Castes', a significant increase from the Rs 6,780 crore in the previous financial year. For achieving social justice comprehensively, the saturation approach of covering all eligible people through various programmes, including those for education and health, will be adopted, Finance Minister <keyword id="19916618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirmala-Sitharaman" source="keywords">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> said on Tuesday while presenting the 2024-25 Union Budget in Parliament. She said to ensure <keyword id="22517725" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inclusive-human-resource-development" source="keywords">inclusive human resource development</keyword>, a social justice saturation approach will be adopted. Social justice through the saturation approach refers to a strategy where the government aims to ensure that all eligible individuals are covered by various programmes and initiatives. The department has been allocated Rs 2,150 crore for the 'Umbrella Programme for Development of Other Vulnerable Groups' and Rs 314 crore for the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction. The establishment expenditure of Rs 145.80 crore for the central administration includes allocations for the secretariat and national commissions. The amount is a slight decrease from the previous year's Rs 152.60 crore. The National Commission for Scheduled Castes has been allocated Rs 38 crore and the National Commission for Backward Classes Rs 21 crore. The budget of the Development and Welfare Board for Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Communities remains at Rs 5 crore. Central sector schemes and projects are among the focus areas of this budget, with the <keyword id="22517726" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="scholarships-for-higher-education" source="keywords">Scholarships for Higher Education</keyword> for Young Achievers Scheme for Scheduled Castes being allocated Rs 428 crore. This scheme encompasses various sub-schemes, including the National Fellowship for SCs, Free Coaching for SCs and OBCs, Top Class Education for SCs and the National Overseas Scholarship for SCs. The Scheme of Residential Education for Students in High School in Targeted Areas for SCs has been allocated Rs 133.07 crore. The department also prioritises <keyword id="22024434" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="economic-assistance" source="keywords">economic assistance</keyword> and <keyword id="20068989" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="skill-development" source="keywords">skill development</keyword> through initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Dakshta Aur Kushalta Sampann Hitgrahi Yojana -- that has been allocated Rs 130 crore -- and the <keyword id="20245482" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="venture-capital-fund" source="keywords">Venture Capital Fund</keyword> for SCs and OBCs -- that has bee allocated Rs 50 crore. Additionally, the Self Employment Scheme for Rehabilitation of Manual Scavengers, which previously had allocations, does not feature in the current budget, indicating a possible reallocation of funds or a change in strategy. Support for marginalised individuals, particularly through the Support for Marginalized Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise programme, which includes comprehensive rehabilitation for persons engaged in begging and welfare of transgender persons, has been allocated Rs 98.46 crore. This marks a substantial increase from the previous year's Rs 32.82 crore, highlighting a growing commitment to addressing these vulnerable groups' needs. Transfers to states and Union Territories under centrally sponsored schemes form a major part of the budget.

In most regards, the sales pitch for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-doesnt-have-door-handles-elon-musk-2023-12">Tesla's new Cybertruck</a> doesn't differ in its particulars from the value proposition of any other pickup or SUV. It's intended to be tough — heavy, high, sharp-edged steel. "If you're ever in an argument with another car," Elon Musk assured everyone at the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-price-release-event-delivery-truck-live-updates-2023-11">truck's launch event</a> last week, "you will win." Never mind that a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a46011736/tesla-cybertruck-crash-test/">head-on crash</a> at only 35 mph appears to be enough to crush the truck's front and break its rear axle.But unlike the Cybertruck, its sales pitch has a curve: Musk has said all along that it's designed to be your go-to vehicle for the End of the World. "Sometimes you get these late-civilization vibes," he explained at the launch. "The apocalypse could come along at any moment, and here at Tesla we have the finest in apocalypse technology."As many observers pointed out, that seems kind of silly. After things fall apart and the shopping center does not hold, where are you going to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-ford-gm-volvo-supercharger-electric-cars-charger-network-data-2023-7">charge an electric car</a>? But while it's easy to drag Musk for his<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-spacex-mars-longtermism-baby-sea-turtles-2022-3"> weirdo millenarianism</a>, let's pause for a moment and take him at his word. He thinks his hideously complex, electrically powered, factory-engineered technological apex predator will not only continue to function after a societal collapse — nuclear armageddon, sea-level rise, global pandemic, all the hits — but actually be of some use. In his mind, at least, the Cybertruck will get us where we need to go long after there's no more cyber.That says something important about Musk and the flavor of apocalypse he thinks is coming. Apparently Musk believes that if and when the end comes, he — and presumably every Cybertruck owner — will be safe in some sort of armored dome, where the lights are still on and the champagne's on tap. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-to-do-survived-the-apocalypse-2019-12">The rest of us suckers?</a> Not so much. As one wag <a target="_blank" href="https://bsky.app/profile/cooperlund.bsky.social/post/3kfimpc5eid2a">snarked on a social network</a> that Musk does not own, "Musk is rich enough that his conception of an apocalypse is something that will affect normal people and not him." But Musk's view of the future is even more dystopian than that. The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-truck-cybertruck">Cybertruck</a> is essentially built for postapocalypse tourism — for leaving the gun-studded armor-dome arcology to go shopping in the plague-ridden dystopian city, maybe do a little glamping on the iridescently toxic beach beyond the radioactive waste. It'll be fun to visit those places, because owning a Cybertruck will mean you're rich enough to not have to live there. If you believe in an apocalypse with trucks, you must also believe that someone will be maintaining the necessary infrastructure. And that they'll be working for you. It's always hard to know whether Musk means what he's saying; he's kind of an epistemological chasm. But the dude has apocalypses on the brain. He has asserted that "it's just a matter of time" until there's another asteroid extinction event like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs (potentially true), that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pronatalism-elon-musk-population-tech-2022-11">low birth rates</a> pose a "bigger risk to civilization than global warming" (not true), and that a "woke mind virus" is the reason San Francisco looks like it has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-downtown-san-francisco-looks-like-zombie-apocalypse-2023-5">suffered a zombie apocalypse</a> (very not true). He started SpaceX because he hopes to make humanity multiplanetary as a "backup" in the event of a terrestrial calamity, like Earth getting <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/10/opinion/sway-kara-swisher-trailer.html">engulfed by its expanding sun</a> (something that won't happen for at least 5 billion years). But lately the apocalypse that's most preoccupied Musk is the one where artificial intelligence becomes powerful enough to take over the world and kill all humans. That led him to start Neuralink, a brain-computer-interface company with an eye on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wired.com/story/neuralink-is-impressive-tech-wrapped-in-musk-hype/">letting humans intermingle with AI</a>, and to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-thinks-openai-sam-altman-made-dangerous-ai-discovery-2023-11">cofound OpenAI</a>, which in a twist only ChatGPT could love has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/former-openai-board-member-were-not-slowing-openai-down-2023-11">pivoted to creating an artificial intelligence</a> powerful enough to take over the world and kill all humans. The apocalyptic mindset dovetails conveniently with Musk's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-spacex-mars-longtermism-baby-sea-turtles-2022-3">love of longtermism</a>, an ideology that says you're allowed to do pretty much anything you want right now as long as it saves trillions of lives in the distant future. Hence the Cybertruck, the ultimate status symbol for the end times. If you're looking to justify an apocalyptic world in which you tool around in a $61,000 pickup truck while everyone else eats their young, then this is the vehicle for you. Sure, all those losers crammed into a 265th-floor walkup in Megacity One will be jealous as you cruise past them in your sweet, sweet ride. But all they're doing is surviving. Your job — your mission, really — is to ensure the continuation of human civilization. And to do that, you're going to need something with armored glass, a 2,500-pound payload, and an interior "as quiet as outer space."The irony is that if you really want something apocalyptic — something that has killed or maimed millions, that remade the landscape into something inhuman and bleak, that grew out of a devilish bargain promising freedom and delivering fear — well, we already have that. It's trucks! Barely two weeks before the Cybertruck launch, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety published new data confirming what car researchers have been saying for years. Trucks are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.iihs.org/news/detail/vehicles-with-higher-more-vertical-front-ends-pose-greater-risk-to-pedestrians">45% more likely</a> to kill a person they hit than smaller vehicles. Places with more trucks have <a target="_blank" href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ecotra.2021.100219">more pedestrian deaths</a>, as do cities with <a target="_blank" href="https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S2542519619302633">more roads and less public transit</a>. The nation's pedestrian death toll has soared by 80% since 2009, thanks in large part to ever rising truck sizes and sales. That's 20 dead people every day. And that's not counting all the air pollution and deforestation and global warming that trucks are helping to fuel. The truckpocalypse is now.In the early 20th century, when cars first came within financial reach of average Americans, the sales pitch focused on <a target="_blank" href="https://doi.org/10.1177/0263276404046066">freedom of movement</a>. But with trucks, the marketing has changed. Giant trucks represent <a target="_blank" href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.eist.2015.02.001">security</a>, the cocooned safety of the passengers against an increasingly hostile world. The Cybertruck takes this idea to its logical, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theonion.com/conscientious-suv-shopper-just-wants-something-that-wil-1844930331">lolsob hilarious extreme</a>. It doesn't just park inside the armor dome; it is the armor dome. And to make that sales pitch stick, the people hawking the trucks have to make us believe that the world is, in fact, getting increasingly hostile. Make sure everyone can buy a gun, then sell everyone a bulletproof car. Writers from Ursula K. Le Guin to Ken Liu have variously phrased the idea that every dystopia is, inevitably, someone else's utopia. When a spaceship-building, Mars-settlement-advocating, right-wing-politics-curious richest man on Earth starts telling you to consider what you'll drive amid late-civilization vibes, it's worth asking where he's planning on riding out the end days himself. My brain is even more sci-fi-addled than Musk's, so I know that cyberpunk — the genre with which his ridiculous truck identifies — is about the dangers of amok technology in a world crushed by inequality. To paraphrase the game designer Mike Pondsmith: Cyberpunk is a warning, not an owner's manual.Besides, the perfect postapocalyptic vehicle isn't a big ugly truck. It's a bicycle — light, reliable, easy to fix and scavenge parts for, able to move cargo, doesn't need any power except you and calories. And the thing that will actually get us through an apocalypse — or, preferably, prevent one — isn't driving a steel-plated War Rig. It's working together. Cooperation has always been humanity's superpower, when we remember to use it. New Delhi, Feb 1 (PTI) The Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry, which caters to the welfare of the backward classes and those with disabilities, was allocated Rs 13,134 crore in the Union Budget 2022-23, a 12 percent increase from the last fiscal. An amount of Rs 11,922 crore has been allocated for the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment and Rs Rs 1212 crore for the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities in the financial year 2022-23. The Budget for 2022-23 saw an allocation of Rs 56 crore for the three national commissions -- National Commission for Scheduled Castes, National Commission for Backward Classes and National Commission for Safai Karamcharis, as against the allocation of Rs 49 crore for 2021-22. However, certain crucial schemes of the ministry like the Support for Marginalized Individuals for Livelihood &amp; Enterprise (SMILE), Scheme for Economic Empowerment of DNT/NT/SNTs (SEED), Pradhan Mantri Dakshta Aur Kushalta Sampann Hitgrahi (PM DAKSH) Yojana and Self Employment Scheme for Rehabilitation of Manual Scavengers saw a budget cut. Her elder son Vishesh educated her about the community and helped her process the information. Gradually, she came to the realization that this was normal and Aashish needed her support. “I thought I should help Aashish, he must have struggled enough already. Our public speaking mentor told us to deliver a speech that’s close to our hearts, in front of a group of 40-50 people. I prepared a speech for him (Aashish) and accepted him in front of everyone – Love them, hug them, and kiss them because the closet is not the place to be in,” shared Nanda on the show. Inspired by his own fondness for heels and the lack of inclusive footwear, Aashish started BeUnic as a gender-fluid and inclusive footwear brand. It expanded into an online marketplace after Aashish attended a conference in Bengaluru for LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs. He realized that most queer entrepreneurs sell their products primarily through social media channels like Instagram because setting up a website was costly and complex. Today, apart from footwear, BeUnic offers clothes, accessories, footwear, stationery, and home decor. It currently has 500 products from 26 creators, which have been shipped to 12 countries. The startup commissions designs from queer artists. It also uses models from the community to promote its products. “The other platforms are just selling merchandise. Our platform’s specialty is that we’re trying to build a community,” added Nanda. BeUnic generated sales to the tune of ₹20,000 in FY20. The following year, when the founders tried building a marketplace, Covid-19 impacted their business. The Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, has informed that there is <a href="https://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-no-official-estimate-of-black-money-stashed-in-swiss-banks-centre-tells-parliament-2902569">no official </a>estimate of the amount of black money deposited in Swiss banks in the decade. According to data shared by Switzerland's central bank, Indian individuals and firms have deposited over CHF 2,554.7 million or<a href="https://scroll.in/latest/997838/indian-deposits-in-swiss-banks-rise-to-over-rs-20700-crore-highest-in-13-years"> ₹20,700 crore</a> in Swiss Banks in 2020. If only, the ministry had thought of going through this year’s budget session thoroughly. He also noted that 66,692 manual scavengers have been identified across the country. ‘Information on witnesses killed, turned hostile not maintained centrally’ The Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, has informed the parliament that the government has no data of the cases where key witnesses were killed or turned hostile. “The Witness Protection Scheme, 2018 provides that the witness protection measures ordered shall be proportionate to the threat and shall be for a specific duration not exceeding three months at a time," Rai added. However, these cases are fairly common in India. New Delhi, Apr 9 () A plea seeking to ensure protection of rights of 'safai karamcharis' (sanitation workers) during the nationwide lockdown in wake of COVID-19 outbreak has been filed in the Supreme Court.The petition by activist Harnam Singh sought COVID-19 Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for sanitation workers within a period of 24 hours and provisions for testing the workers and their immediate family within 48 hours."Safai Karamcharis/sanitation workers carry out the essential service of keeping every city, town and village clean, sweep the roads, carry waste of every household, clean sewers etc." the petition said."In order to carry out the said work, these Safai Karamcharis/sanitation workers are not equipped with any COVID-19 protective gear/Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) to safeguard them from the highly infectious coronavirus," it said.Referring to a technical brief and an internal guidance issued by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the PIL said that the organisation had stated that sanitation workers have to wear appropriate PPE which includes protective outerwear, gloves, boots, goggles or a face shield, and a mask while carrying out their duties.The plea contended that 'The Prohibition of Employment As Manual Scavengers and Their Rehabilitation Act 2013' makes it clear that cleaning of sewers or septic tanks without protective gear amounts to hazardous cleaning and attracts penal consequences.The Union Health Ministry on Thursday stressed on the rational use of PPE by healthcare workers treating coronavirus patients amid concerns over their dwindling numbers in the country.Joint Secretary at the Health Ministry Lav Agarwal said there is no need to panic as India has sufficient stock of PPE and the government is making all efforts to augment their supply further.Addressing a daily briefing at 4 pm to provide updates on the COVID-19 situation, he said that 20 domestic manufacturing companies of PPE have been developed."Orders for 1.7 crore PPE have already been placed with them and supply has already begun," Agarwal said.Since Wednesday, 540 cases of the coronavirus infection and 17 deaths have been reported, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases in India to 5,734 and death toll to 166, he said. The village is being developed in Rajasthan’s Mewat region. Pathak is a social crusader for sanitation and in his address to the Indian Diaspora, Pathak said he is working to provide affordable sanitation and toilets to the masses and end the practice of manual scavenging. “The cost of one toilet ranges from USD 25 to USD 500, depending on nature of construction. Technology remains the same,” he said.
