Sri Lanka's Board of Investment has approved the two wind power plants of AdGreen Energy to be built in <keyword id="248936" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mannar" source="Orion">Mannar</keyword> and Pooneryn at a total investment of USD 442 million. According to the statement released by the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka on Friday, it has issued a letter of approval to <keyword id="76451" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="adani" source="Orion">Adani</keyword> Green Energy Limited, for the two wind power plants. Also, the new project will generate 1,500-2,000 new employment opportunities. The wind power plant in Mannar will operate at a capacity of 250 megawatt (MW) while the wind power plant in Pooneryn will operate at a capacity of 100 MW. The two wind power plants of 350 MW are scheduled to be commissioned in two years and accordingly, will be added to the national grid by 2025. <keyword id="82981" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="fitch" source="Orion">Fitch</keyword> Ratings on Thursday affirmed the 'BBB-' ratings on the USD 400 million senior secured notes issued by the restricted group of India-based Adani Transmission Ltd (ATL, BBB-/Stable). The outlook is stable, the statement from Fitch said. The restricted group includes six co-issuers -- Barmer Power Transmission Service Limited, Chhattisgarh-WR Transmission Limited, Hadoti Power Transmission Service Limited, Raipur-Rajnandgaon-Warora Transmission Limited, Sipat Transmission Limited and <keyword id="16465511" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="thar-power-transmission-service-limited" source="Orion">Thar Power Transmission Service Limited</keyword> and one non-issuing Special purpose vehicle (<keyword id="6366358" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="spv" source="Orion">SPV</keyword>), Adani Transmission (Rajasthan) Ltd (ATRL). The Dhaka Tribune in a report on Thursday said the Adani Group will supply electricity to Bangladesh for the next 25 years. According to the agreement the company signed with the Bangladesh government, Adani is setting up a power plant in the Godda district of Jharkhand and once the plant starts to produce power, it will supply electricity to Bangladesh. The report added that Bangladesh signed the deal with Adani Power back in 2017. Sri Lanka okays Adani's USD 442-millon wind power plants in Mannar and Pooneryn

Wijesekara said in a tweet that he met officials of <keyword id="485011" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ceylon-electricity-board" source="Orion">Ceylon Electricity Board</keyword> (CEB) and <keyword id="14736922" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sustainable-development-authority" source="Orion">Sustainable Development Authority</keyword> on Tuesday to discuss the progress of renewable energy projects. Adani Green Energy was issued provisional approvals for two wind projects of 286 MW in <keyword id="248936" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mannar" source="Orion">Mannar</keyword> and 234 MW in Pooneryn for an Investment of over $500 million, he added. Adani Group gets nod to invest $500 mn for wind power projects in Sri Lanka

The Indian state of Maharashtra is home to 11 major irrigation dams, which normally is enough for the state. However, because of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/The-Drought-Series-Maharashtras-drought-explained/articleshow/51927097.cms">severe drought </a>that the state is facing, 7 such dams have <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Key-reservoirs-in-India-dont-have-enough-water/articleshow/51825053.cms">no water left</a> in them. 
 
These seven major irrigation dams that have faced the wrath of draught this year are Jayakwadi, Purna Siddheshwar, Majalgaon, Manjra, Lower Terna, Mannar and Sina Kolegaon, and are located in Aurangabad, Parbhani, Beed, Nanded and Osmanabad districts. 
 
The latest data has come from Water Resources Department for the week ending April 15th, and says that the<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Maharashtra-faces-the-tough-challenge-of-using-water-either-for-drinking-or-for-industries/articleshow/51892493.cms"> parched region of Marathwada</a> has only 3% of water stock available, counting all the 814 major, medium and minor irrigation projects. 
 
To fight the acute water scarcity that several parts of the state are facing, the department has deployed 4,356 tankers across Maharashtra that will supply drinking water to the dwellers. 
 
Other than this, a 50-wagon water train, called Jaldoot, has also reached Latur, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Bombay-High-Court-says-no-IPL-matchesin-drought-hit-Maharashtra-after-April-30/articleshow/51812532.cms">worst-hit area</a>. It carries 25 lakh litres of water, in addition to the 70 lakh litres that has already been delivered by train to Latur residents.

Drought-hit Maharashtra dams have no water left for irrigation

Mumbai, May 14 () The poor in general, and those suffering from malnutrition among them, are at higher risks of contracting coronavirus infection, highlighting the weakness of the food and health systems across the world and more so in India, says a report.The Global Nutrition Report 2020 comes amidst the COVID-19 pandemic spreading at a much faster clip in the country, leaving over 78,000 infected and killing over 2,500. Tens of thousands of poor and daily wagers are on transit in most daring conditions across the country where public transport is still patchy, it said.The report notes that one in nine of the world's population or a whopping 820 million are hungry wherein India alone is the single largest contributor as most of them cannot access or afford healthy food, while one in three is overweight or obese.Ironically, the report said, both the under-fed poor/undernourished and the over-fed or the obese are at risks with the latter facing 10 times more risk from the deadly virus infection.It further said that following the spread of the pandemic, millions of households in formerly food-secure regions of the world have fallen into severe food insecurity, while in India various media reports say tens of millions of the migrant workers and their poor families face starvation as the lockdown lingers. The report also warns that the levels of hunger and malnutrition could double within the space of just a few weeks.Accordingly, the report calls for an overhaul of the world's food and health systems to tackle malnutrition, which has become a threat-multiplier given the coronavirus pandemic and its infectious grip over the poor which is now the leading cause of ill-health and deaths globally.The report says most of the poor across the world cannot access or afford healthy food primarily because of agricultural systems that favour calories over nutrition on one hand and on the other the ubiquity and low cost of highly processed foods."An increasing number of countries have the double burden of malnutrition, obesity and other diet-related diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer," notes the report.Venkatesh Mannar, a special adviser on nutrition to the Tata Trusts and the Tata-Cornell Institute for Agriculture and Nutrition, two of the organisations that has funded the report, told that "the COVID-19 has exposed the deep inequality of our food system, wherein both under-nutrition and over-nutrition as visible from abject poverty and obesity have come to the fore."And both of these segments of the people are at higher risk to COVID-19 infections. In fact, the obese are 10 more at risk to COVID infection and fatality than the rest of the populations," says Mannar.Asked whether most of the close to 3 lakh dead or the 4.3 million infected with the virus are poor and obese, he answered in the affirmative saying many studies have established that the obese are among largest of the dead.This is also evident from the fact that a vast majority of the dead are from the richest nations like the US, Britain, France, Italy and Spain and the least from Africa. At over 83,300 dead, nearly a fifth of the total casualties are in the US alone.On the peculiar condition of India where a third of its 136 crore are poor, Mannar said the bigger problem in the country is not poverty now as the number of the poor and the malnourished is coming down, but over-nutrition as the rate with which the number of the obese is rising much faster.As the world's leading report on the state of global nutrition, Global Nutrition Report 2020 underlines the need to address food inequity to end malnutrition in all its forms as food and health inequity are the major causes for malnutrition -– both under-nutrition and over-nutrition or overweight/ obesity and other diet-related chronic diseases.On the risk of more coronavirus infections among the poor and under-/over-nourished, the report says, "undernourished have weaker immune systems, and are at greater risk of severe illness due to the pandemic. At the same time, poor metabolic health, including obesity and diabetes, is strongly linked to worse COVID-19 outcomes including the risk of death".Stressing that good nutrition is an essential part of an individual's defence against the virus, the report says nutritional resilience is a key element of a society's readiness to combat the pandemic threat."Focussing on nutritional well-being provides opportunities for establishing synergies between public health and equity, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. And the COVID-19 exposes the vulnerability and weaknesses of our already fragile food systems which is already stressed by increasing climate extremes," says the report.On India, the report notes that the country has had some success in reducing the number of underweight children and adolescents."Between 2000 and 2016, these rates declined from 66 to 58.1 per cent for boys and from 54.2 to 50.1 per cent for girls. But is still high compared to the average of 35.6 per cent for boys and 31.8 per cent for girls in Asia.Additionally, 37.9 per cent Indian children under-5 being stunted and 20.8 per cent wasted, compared to the Asia average of 22.7 per cent and 9.4 per cent, respectively, says the report.While diet-related illness continue to be an issue, with one in two women of reproductive age being anaemic, rates of overweight and obesity continue to rise, affecting almost one-fifth of adults with 21.6 per cent females and 17.8 per cent men being obese.Also, India is home to largest number of within-country malnutrition inequalities based on communities at the sub-national level, with UP having over 40 per cent children stunted on average and at 50.7 per cent among the poor. The same applies for overweight/obesity, where there are nearly double as many obese adult females than there are males -- 5.1 per cent against 2.7 per cent, the report said. BEN MKJ

Poor facing more risks from coronavirus due to malnutrition: Report

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A man, 61, died after swallowing an almost inch-long fish bone that caused a hole in his intestine.</li><li>He went to an ER in Sri Lanka with symptoms including tummy pain, vomiting, and confusion.</li></ul>A man died after an almost inch-long fish bone got lodged in his small intestine and caused an infection, <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9240790/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to a report.</a>The unnamed 61-year-old farmer had experienced worsening<a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/conditions-symptoms/stomach-ache">tummy pain</a> and an expanded abdomen, vomiting, and <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/constipation-relief">constipation</a> for three days before he went to an emergency room in Mannar in northern Sri Lanka.When he arrived at the hospital, the man was confused, had a fever, and his vital signs suggested that he was sick from an infection in his abdomen, surgeons and anesthesiologists wrote in a case report published in the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports in July.They took him to the intensive care unit and treated him with <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/treatments/how-long-does-it-take-for-antibiotics-to-work">antibiotics</a> and fluids.<h2>The surgeons found a 0.8-inch fish bone in his intestine</h2>To find out what was wrong, the surgeons performed open abdominal surgery. It revealed a 0.8-inch <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-strangest-things-that-have-been-found-inside-peoples-bodies-2018-4">hooked fish bone</a> that had caused about a 0.2-inch hole in the furthest part of the man's small intestine, which was infected.The authors wrote that the case was "unusual." Most foreign bodies — such as fish bones, toothpicks, and dentures — pass through the digestive tract without any complications, such as a hole in the intestine or bleeding, they said.According to the report, foreign bodies commonly get lodged in narrowings or natural angulations of the digestive system, but only about 1% of foreign bodies that get stuck damage the small intestine, and 1% of those need surgical removal.In this case, the surgeons removed around 4 inches of the man's intestine and created a temporary <a href="https://www.insider.com/hannah-witton-sex-and-relationships-youtuber-chronic-illness-2020-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stoma</a> to try to treat him, but he didn't recover.Eight hours after he arrived at the hospital, the man had a cardiac arrest and died.
