After Taranjeet Singh and Balaji Krish, Maheshwari will be the third person at the helm of the microblogging platform's Indian affairs since 2017. Twitter has 30 million users in India. Maheshwari will report to Maya Hari, Twitter's Vice President and Managing Director of Asia Pacific, and will be responsible for driving an integrated business strategy to accelerate Twitter's audience and revenue growth in the country, the company said in a statement. "India is one of our fastest growing audience markets for Twitter in the world and our purpose is to serve the public conversation in India. We are thrilled to have Manish join us at this important time to take our Indian business to the next level," said Hari. Before this appointment, Maheshwari was the CEO, Network18 Digital whose marquee properties include Moneycontrol, <keyword id="2030086" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Firstpost">Firstpost</keyword>, News18, CNBC-TV18, CricketNext and In.com. He headed the Merchant Business and Seller Ecosystem at Flipkart for about a year ending in February 2016. He also worked for Procter and Gamble for five years, out of which he was running the company's Asia operations for three years, according to his LinkedIn profile. Maheshwari spent the maximum time at Silicon Valley-based Intuit, where he was the managing director of txtWeb, a platform that allows developers to build text-based apps. <ul><li>Covid-19 has changed the way we buy, it has changed the reasons we buy certain products and brands too. There is an increasing focus on brands that are sourcing locally, helping the community and are transparent about everything that goes into making them.</li><li>Also, brands that are trying to help the environment, are sustainable are finding more and more takers, according to a recent study by <keyword id="172902" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mintel">Mintel</keyword>.</li><li>We look at this trend of an increased focus on <keyword id="9220437" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="localism">localism</keyword> and talk to a few brands that are gaining from it.</li></ul>Covid-19 has brought about a huge change in how and what we consume. Over the past one and a half years, people have become more and more conscious about where their products come from, the kind of ingredients that are being used, how closely brands are working with local communities and help benefit them and how serious they are about helping the environment. According to findings of Mintel’s recent ‘Attitudes towards Localism –Indian Consumer – 2021’ reports, consumers have been showing heightened interest in local products due to COVID-19. And no, it is not just Gen Z’s who are giving this trend a push. The pandemic led consumers across all age groups to lean towards traditions in foods, beauty regimes or health and wellness. The study, which took into account opinions of 3000 people across the country states that 39% of people aged 35-44+ expect brands to offer traditional ingredients in packaged formats. The pandemic has heightened concerns around product quality, and 48% of men aged 35+ look for products which offer transparency about use of local ingredients. The study also reveals that there is an increasing affinity for brands that give back to the society and are trying to support communities as 46% of 35-44 year old women are keen on products that support social causes. Moreover, around 45% of Indians switched to buying locally-grown produce since the pandemic, a trend highest among women aged 35-44 (58%). This same group of women also led the switch to buying more organic products. The report suggests that this is an opportunity for local brands to talk about their sustainability efforts by calling out how they source their products and how this impacts the environment. Speaking about some of the key factors that have led to people leaning towards localism, <keyword id="3056481" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nidhi-Sinha">Nidhi Sinha</keyword>, Head of Content, Mintel Indian Consumer said, “The pandemic paved the way for local products to come to the fore. With challenges in the supply chain coupled with the need for familiarity, consumers increasingly took to local products. With the health halo at its pinnacle, people were inherently looking to increase their immunity, improve their health and also deal with mental health issues. The answer to these was in the usage of traditional, ayurvedic ingredients like giloy, ashwagandha and so on. “Another sentiment which led to consumers leaning to the localism pillar is the fact that these products help local communities. As people struggled to meet ends due to the imposed lockdown restrictions, consumption of local produce helped consumers to pass on benefits to local artisans, farmers and communities. 34% of consumers prefer products that support local communities. Technology enabled small time local setups to reach consumers. Usage of apps like WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook helped connect consumers to producers thus making concepts like farm-to-fork easy to take to.” The need for comfort and familiarity has been one of the biggest factors in this trend. “With 37% of consumers looking for products that are aligned to local culture, consumers have been seeking familiarity and comfort especially in these tough times. The launch of products like thandai from paper boat and ubtan from Mama Earth are proof of how consumers look for familiarity in line with a global consumer trend of Culturally Connected,” shared Sinha. While Indians have been increasingly focusing on health for the past few years, the pandemic just gave this trend the right push. “Around 43% of consumers today expect products to have ingredients which provide added benefits. Also, the affinity towards online shopping as well as better last-mile-delivery means that traditional setups can reach consumers, thus, making local products easy to use,” added Sinha. <keyword id="9450009" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="wow-skin-science">WOW Skin Science</keyword> is a brand that has witnessed good growth in the past few years. A lot of its growth has come on the back of its usage of natural ingredients in its products. It has also been actively working on making its products and packaging more eco-friendly. On whether its focus on local ingredients has helped it attract consumers, <keyword id="4759349" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="manish-chowdhary">Manish Chowdhary</keyword>, Co founder, WOW Skin Science said, “There has been a greater preference for natural plant-based local products in recent times. Using high-quality local ingredients has been one of the factors responsible for our growth. Our product formulations are nature-inspired, science-backed and safety-tested, sourcing the best ingredients to create effective products that are also affordable. We’re completely transparent about the ingredients that go into our products and we stay true to our claim of being paraben, sulphate and silicone-free.” Just 7-years-old, this year, the brand aims to achieve revenues of around Rs 800 crore. 	It will also help the marketplace eliminate fake products in the long run through access for manufacturers to brand licensing. 

	 Viacom 18 is among the first to have tied up with <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> for licensing three of its brands - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Spongebob Squarepants and Peanuts for sellers. "International brands that issue licenses through the offline model face several challenges when it comes to sales reporting and product quality control which in turn heavily impacts their royalty. Through this online licensing concept, we want to simplify this process by connecting International brands with the top performing sellers on our platform, giving the brands the power to keep a track on the product sales as well as the quality," said <keyword id="1546480" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Manish-Maheshwari">Manish Maheshwari</keyword>, vice president and head of seller ecosystem at Flipkart. 
	As a part of the initiative, the marketplace will also address brand concerns on product quality and transparency on retail sales.

Flipkart adds licensing by international brands on its platform

A week after temporarily suspending his account, <keyword id="6354616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> restored <keyword id="48496" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress-leader">Congress leader</keyword> <keyword id="5268" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rahul-Gandhi">Rahul Gandhi</keyword>'s handle Saturday, but not before the principal opposition party accused it of bias. Gandhi's account was temporarily suspended last week after he tweeted pictures of the family of a nine-year-old victim of alleged rape and murder in Northwest Delhi. Twitter deemed it violation of its rules. Sources said the Twitter accounts of some of the party leaders who had shared the same pictures have also been restored. "Rahul Gandhi's Twitter account has been unlocked," a party functionary said, adding the accounts of some of the leaders have also been restored. The former <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> chief had made a strong outburst on Friday accusing Twitter of "interfering in the national political process" and said shutting down of his handle amounted to an "attack on the country's democratic structure". Gandhi, in a YouTube video statement titled "Twitter's dangerous game", alleged that it was not a neutral and objective platform and was "beholden to the government". Questioning Twitter's action, Gandhi had said the company was denying millions of his followers the right to an opinion, which was unfair. "It's obvious now that Twitter is actually not a neutral, objective platform. It is a biased platform. It's something that listens to what the government of the day says," Gandhi had alleged. In the wake of the friction with the Congress, Twitter has transferred its India head Manish Maheshwari, against whom an FIR was registered in Uttar Pradesh in connection with a probe related to a video of an alleged hate crime, to the US. Twitter restores Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's account

Amid a tussle between the <keyword id="6362177" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-government">Union government</keyword> and <keyword id="6354616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> over the new IT rules, members of a <keyword id="85516" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Parliamentary-panel">parliamentary panel</keyword> on Friday strongly objected to Twitter India officials' observations that they abide by their policy and categorically told them that the rule of land is supreme. According to sources, members of the Parliamentary Panel on <keyword id="6363148" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="information-technology">Information Technology</keyword> also asked Twitter why it should not be fined as it has been found "violating" rules of the country. Earlier this month, the Centre issued a notice to Twitter giving it one last chance to "immediately" comply with the new IT rules and warned that failure to adhere to the norms will lead to the platform losing exemption from liability under the IT Act. The Parliamentary <keyword id="6355940" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="standing-committee">Standing Committee</keyword> on Information and Technology, chaired by Congress leader <keyword id="42749" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shashi-Tharoor">Shashi Tharoor</keyword>, had last week summoned Twitter over issues related to misuse of the platform and protection of citizens' rights. Twitter India's public policy manager Shagufta Kamran and legal counsel Ayushi Kapoor deposed before the panel on Friday. Members of the panel asked some tough and searching questions to Twitter India officials but there answers lacked clarity and were ambiguous, sources said. They strongly objected to the observation of Twitter India officials that its policy is on par with the rule of land and categorically told them "rule of land is supreme, not your policy", sources said. Twitter and the Centre have been at loggerheads over several issues for the last few months. The microblogging site had faced backlash when it briefly removed the 'blue tick' verification badge from the personal account of Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu and of several senior RSS functionaries, including its chief Mohan Bhagwat. Earlier, Delhi Police had sent a notice to Twitter, seeking an explanation of how it described an alleged "Congress toolkit" against the Central government as manipulated media. The police reportedly had also questioned Twitter India MD Manish Maheshwari on May 31 and visited the Twitter India offices in Delhi and Gurgaon on May 24 over the toolkit issue. <keyword id="6354616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> on Thursday rolled out a new feature called Topics in India in both English and Hindi that will make it easy for people to find, follow and talk about their interests and the things they like. The 'Topics' feature lets people follow specific subjects of their interest, allowing them to see more content on these subjects on their timeline. When a person chooses to follow a Topic, he or she will see tweets from a whole host of accounts that are experts, fans or just tend to talk about that subject a lot on Twitter on their timeline. When a person chooses to follow a Topic, whether it's their favourite band, sports team or even a city they'll see Tweets from a whole host of accounts that are experts, fans or just tend to talk about that subject a lot on Twitter on their timeline. "The addition of Hindi Topics demonstrates our commitment to diversity of conversations across languages. We are excited to see these vibrant conversations flourish on Twitter in India," said Manish Maheshwari, MD, <keyword id="749437" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter-India">Twitter India</keyword>. Within a Hindi Topic, people will be able to see Tweets in Devanagari script, as well as Hindi speech typed in the Roman alphabet. Indian users will be able to follow conversations about a Topic like they have been following accounts - with one single tap. Topic suggestions will appear in the timeline and in the search bar based on what is most relevant to them. To search for Topics you want to follow, open the Twitter app on your phone, click on the icon with three horizontal lines on the top left of the app, Tap on 'Topics' and you will see a list of 'Suggested Topics'. Tap the 'Follow' button on the ones you find interesting and click on 'More Topics' at the end of the list to explore a wider list of Topics and sub-Topics to choose from. You can also explore the Topics Selector page, which provides a list of Topics to follow. You can also stop following a Topic that you no more wish to see on your timeline. Apart from Hindi, Topics are also available in English, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, and Korean. "India is an important market for Twitter. We want to strengthen the service's value for Indian audiences by giving them more control over what they want to see on their timelines," Maheshwari said. Twitter rolls out 'Topics' feature in English and Hindi in India

New Delhi, June 9 (IANS) Twitter on Tuesday announced to bring Fleets feature in testing phase to India that, once selected, will make tweets disappear after 24 hours and have no retweets, likes or public comments. Taking inspiration from Snapchat "Stories", the tool is currently under the testing phase in Brazil and Italy. Fleets will be available for everyone in India on Twitter for iOS and Android in the coming days in updated app versions, the company said in a statement. "We are excited to bring the Fleets experiment to India and make it one of the first three countries in the world to experience this new product. From the test in India, we'll learn how adding a new mode of conversation changes the way Indians engage on Twitter," said Manish Maheshwari, MD, Twitter India. Like tweets, Fleets are based primarily on text, but people can include videos, GIFs or photos in them. To create a new Fleet, tap your avatar on the top left of your profile to create a new Fleet, start typing or tap a media icon to add photo/s or video/s and and tap 'Fleet' to post. People can see who's seen their Fleet by looking underneath a post. They can tap on someone's avatar to see what the person has shared since they last were on Twitter. Alternatively, one can also find an account's Fleets by looking on their profile page. "It'll be interesting to see if it further amplifies the diversity of usage by allowing people to share what they're thinking in a way that is light-touch and light-hearted," said Maheshwari. To view someone's Fleet, one can tap an avatar to see their latest Fleets. To engage with your followers on Fleets, buttons to reply and react are available when Direct Messages (DMs) are open. "Followers can reply privately via DM or quickly react with an emoji, and continue the conversation privately in DMs. Replies and reactions will appear in DMs along with the Fleet they are responding to," said Twitter. "We want people to be able to have conversations on Twitter in different ways, with less pressure and more control. The experiment will be rolled out in phases to the audiences, making India one of three countries to have access to the feature, alongside Brazil and Japan. According to the company, voice messages in DMs will make it easier for people to have conversations. "We're excited to bring the voice messages in DMs experiment to the country and give people a new way to express themselves and help them connect through the nuances, emotion, and empathy built by hearing someone's voice," said Manish Maheshwari, Managing Director, <keyword id="749437" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter-India">Twitter India</keyword>. Each voice message can be upto 140 seconds long and can help people chat quickly - whether on the move or when there's just too much to type. This is how the new feature will work. In a DM conversation, tap the new voice recording icon once to begin recording. Tap the stop icon when you're done and you'll have the option to listen to your recording before sending or deleting it. Alternatively, on iOS, you can also quick-send by holding down the voice recording icon and swiping up to send immediately after you're done talking. Anyone will have the ability to listen to these messages wherever and however they use Twitter, but the ability to record voice messages over DM will be available for people on Twitter for iOS and Android in India, Japan and Brazil.
