New Delhi, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra (M&amp;M) on Friday said its total automotive wholesales increased by 19 per cent to 70,350 units in August. The company's total dispatches to dealers stood at 59,049 units in August 2022. The Mumbai-based auto major's passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market rose by 25 per cent to 37,270 units last month as against 29,852 units in April last year, the auto major said in a statement. "We clocked our highest-ever SUV domestic sales of 37,270 (units) in a month with a growth of 26 per cent...While demand for our key SUV brands continue to be strong, we are keeping a close watch on the availability of semiconductors and select parts, for sustained and smooth scale up," M&amp;M President, Automotive Division Veejay Nakra said. The company reported a 17 per cent year-on-year decline in exports at 2,423 units in August.

Mahindra sales rise 19% to 70,350 units in August

<ul><li>Indian car manufacturer <keyword id="6357096" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahindra-Mahindra">Mahindra &amp; Mahindra</keyword> announced that the price of its vehicles would go up by ₹36,000 from July 1. </li><li>The price hike by companies is being attributed to the new safety norms and the BS VI norms followed by the Indian government. </li><li>However, car sales continue to see a decline in India.</li></ul>In India, car sales have been sliding with almost every other automobile giant reporting a decline in sales in the past few months. However, if you thought that would make cars cheaper, well, think again. Car prices are only rising, thanks to the new safety norms which have been made mandatory. Automaker Mahindra &amp; Mahindra announced on Wednesday that it would be raising the prices of its personal vehicles by up to ₹36,000 across models from July 1. But the company is not alone. Maruti Suzuki had already declared a price hike for its new Swift and WagonR. Others like Honda and Tata Motors too have indicated the same. “Mahindra SUVs that will take a substantial price increase are the Scorpio, Bolero, TUV300 and KUV100 NXT, while brands such as the XUV500 and Marazzo will increase prices marginally,” Mahindra said in its filing as reported by IANS. The Indian government had announced the Bharat Stage VI norms for emission regulation. The norms will be adopted by April 2020, however companies had said that the adoption will result in a price-hike. According to <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/industry/bs-vi-norms-car-prices-to-surge-sharply/1423128/">reports</a>, complying to the norms meant a 10% price hike for cars. Meanwhile, <keyword id="424067" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Car-sales-in-India">car sales in India</keyword> have had a sloppy run in the past few months. Car sales are woefully slow in India but prices are rising due to new green norms

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=taxi">Taxi-hailing apps</a> like <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> and <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> might have made your life a tad bit easier but they have become a headache for auto manufacturers. Warning the auto industry against the cab hiring trend, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Anand+Mahindra">Anand Mahindra</a>, the chairman and managing director of <keyword id="6355744" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahindra-Group">Mahindra Group</keyword> has said that this might push more and more people to give-up their cars and use cab services for every day commute. 
 
At the launch of Mahindra’s compact sports utility vehicle TUV 300, Mahindra asked, "The age of access is here. There is going to be increasing number of people who would want access to transportation and not own object of transportation. So what are the opportunities? Today, one lives in a world where the Olas and Ubers of the world are stating that a person doesn't need to own a car, for them transportation is commodity. It changes the way one sells." 
 
The auto manufacturer competes with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Tata+Motors">Tata Motors</a>, <keyword id="596" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword> and Japan’s Honda. 
 
An Economic Times report further quoted Mahindra saying that, "You (can) sell to Ola and Uber and you still want to connect with consumers. And I see another world, which is not devoid of people who want to own a car. I have no doubt that it is going to affect the world and it is going to affect the volumes in the auto industry. Young people very rarely need to own anything." 
 The <keyword id="2665545" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Taxi-hailing-apps">taxi-hailing apps</keyword>, which are more convenient to use, easily available, less expensive have taken the streets by storm. 
 
IHS Automotive senior analyst, Gaurav Vangaal responds to the concern rose by Mahindra and said that it’s a good sign that the head of such a big automotive company recognizes the disruptive change. 
 
Responses from the car makers across the globe have started pouring in. They’ve started upgrading their models with new technology to attract young crowd. Ford recently started a car sharing initiative in the US that helps people let out their cars to a selected set of customers to reduce the cost of maintaining the vehicle. 
 
Car makers are also increasingly using cutting-edge technology to offer multimedia systems that connect mobile phones to cars, wherein one can talk on the move, use voice recognition system to make calls, change radio stations — essentially take command without losing control over the steering wheel. Some of these features found in luxury cars are now making their way into the mass market segment too. 
 
While transportation has become commodity for some, Mahindra said, one is entering the age of experience. He said people are going to buy the things that they love and that Mahindra &amp; Mahindra will have to make things that people love. Mahindra is in a sweet spot, as he said people desire to own an SUV over other options.

Anand Mahindra is unhappy with Uber and Ola for one very pertinent reason

It seems that second hand dealers would soon be raking in the moolah! Following the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Supreme-Court-slaps-temporary-ban-on-luxury-diesel-car-sales-in-Delhi/articleshow/50199800.cms">Supreme Court’s ban </a>on diesel cars in Delhi, used cars have witnessed a sudden surge in demand in the Delhi-NCR region. 
	 
	According to the data compiled by Car Dekho, an online auto marketplace, enquiries for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/NGTs-ban-on-registration-of-diesel-vehicles-in-Delhi-spells-more-woes-for-auto-industry/articleshow/50184296.cms">diesel cars</a> from major brands such as Mahindra, Ford and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/General-Motors-India-to-recall-101597-Beat-diesel-cars/articleshow/50187422.cms">General Motors</a> rose tremendously in the secondhand car market. But this trend is not restricted to mass brands only. Interestingly, the numbers reveal that the luxury segment too saw a whopping increase of nearly 200% in the used cars category. 
	 While German luxury auto majors such as <keyword id="6363321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Audi">Audi</keyword> and <keyword id="6355119" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BMW">BMW</keyword> are probably some of the worst hit in the new car category due to the ban, in the used car segment, these brands are majorly in demand. 
	 The survey revealed that Audi’s Q7, BMW’s 7 series have recorded a whopping 167% and 150% increase in their demand respectively in the second-hand segment. On the other hand, old-man’s car, <keyword id="6357420" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="mercedes">Mercedes</keyword>’A, E and GL Class, only saw a 75%, 68% and 67% increase in their demand respectively. 
	 In the mass market, while brands such as Hyundai, <keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword>, <keyword id="6374528" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Toyota">Toyota</keyword>, Mahindra were adversely affected by the ban, there has been surge in the demand for their popular SUV models in the second hand market. Mahindra’s Ssangyong Rexton saw a 13% increase in its demand while Scorpio and XUV 500 recorded a 32% and 17% increase in their demand in the used car market. Toyota’s Fortuner while saw 66% decline in demand in the new car, it registered a 55% rise in its demand in the second hand car market. 
	 
	Overall, there was a 27% decline in new car leads for diesel SUV segment while used car leads for these models increased by 17% simultaneously. The SC’s order to ban big diesel cars in the city in order to curb <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Heres-what-is-killing-India/articleshow/49918471.cms">air pollution</a> has dented these top auto majors. 
	 
	“We foresee that the demand for used cars in this segment could see a further increase if the ban continues for a longer duration,” said the report.
