New Delhi, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra (M&amp;M) on Friday said its total automotive wholesales increased by 19 per cent to 70,350 units in August. The company's total dispatches to dealers stood at 59,049 units in August 2022. The Mumbai-based auto major's passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market rose by 25 per cent to 37,270 units last month as against 29,852 units in April last year, the auto major said in a statement. "We clocked our highest-ever SUV domestic sales of 37,270 (units) in a month with a growth of 26 per cent...While demand for our key SUV brands continue to be strong, we are keeping a close watch on the availability of semiconductors and select parts, for sustained and smooth scale up," M&amp;M President, Automotive Division Veejay Nakra said. The company reported a 17 per cent year-on-year decline in exports at 2,423 units in August.

Mahindra sales rise 19% to 70,350 units in August

However, if you thought that would make cars cheaper, well, think again. Car prices are only rising, thanks to the new safety norms which have been made mandatory. Automaker Mahindra &amp; Mahindra announced on Wednesday that it would be raising the prices of its personal vehicles by up to ₹36,000 across models from July 1. But the company is not alone. Maruti Suzuki had already declared a price hike for its new Swift and WagonR. Others like Honda and Tata Motors too have indicated the same. “Mahindra SUVs that will take a substantial price increase are the Scorpio, Bolero, TUV300 and KUV100 NXT, while brands such as the XUV500 and Marazzo will increase prices marginally,” Mahindra said in its filing as reported by IANS. The Indian government had announced the Bharat Stage VI norms for emission regulation. The norms will be adopted by April 2020, however companies had said that the adoption will result in a price-hike. According to <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/industry/bs-vi-norms-car-prices-to-surge-sharply/1423128/">reports</a>, complying to the norms meant a 10% price hike for cars. Car sales are woefully slow in India but prices are rising due to new green norms

<ul><li>Market research reports say that July is going to see car sales continue to remain weak across all segments.</li><li>This also means that discounts per car are increasing heavily, Maruti Suzuki is leading the monthly discounts race. </li><li>Most car manufacturers saw their sales decline in the Q1 of FY20, also affecting their profits.</li></ul>Car sales have been slipping for the last eight months, and experts are predicting a tepid July month as well. As expected, manufacturers are rolling in discounts every month, to help push sales. Maruti Suzuki is leading the way with most ‘total cash discounts’ offered to consumers. While Alto models saw an 8% increase in discounts as compared to June, the Celerio Automatic and Dzire Diesel versions saw a steep increase of 23% and 27%. India’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki’s profits fell by 27.3%. It total sales for the first quarter of FY20 fell by 17.9% as compared to the same quarter last year. Analysts say that November car sales may see yet another decline. Market research firm CLSA said that Tata Motors total sales volume may fall by 23% in November, with Jaguar Land Rover sales declining by 5%. “We expect most covered Indian auto OEMs to report a YoY decline in wholesale volumes in November. However, Maruti Suzuki reaped in the festive season benefits and reported a 4.5% jump in October sales. Global ratings agency Fitch Ratings too predicted gloomy days ahead for the auto industry. “High dealer inventories coupled with weak consumer sentiment and deferment of purchase decisions ahead of BS6 will limit any significant boost. Tata Motors November sales may fall 23% – Maruti and M&M may fare slightly better

<ul><li>The company has announced non-working days for 5 of its manufacturing plants “due to continued weak demand”.</li><li>The number of non-working days in a plant is as high as 18 days. </li><li><keyword id="44883" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki">Maruti Suzuki</keyword>, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, <keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword> and Hero Motocorp had all announced no production days owing to the weak demand.</li></ul>Ashok Leyand is the latest auto manufacturer to announce a production cut. The company said that five of its manufacturing plants have non-working days “due to continued weak demand”. Its plants in Ennore, Hosur and CPPS, Alwar, Bhandara and Pantnagar will have many holidays in September. The number of non-working days in a plant being as high as 18. In August, <keyword id="6357085" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ashok-leyland">Ashok Leyland</keyword> saw a drop of about 50% in total. Its truck sales alone came down by 70% as compared to the year before. The truck manufacturer isn’t the only one to cut production. In fact, the company joins a long line of automakers – Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Tata Motors and Hero Motocorp –who announced no production days. In August, Tata Motors’ sales declined by 58%, Maruti Suzuki’s fell by 33%, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra’s fell by 25% while Honda’s fell by 51%. <ul><li>With car sales being woefully slow, Indian <keyword id="1108326" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="auto-manufacturers">auto manufacturers</keyword> are going to see the weakest Q1 results in a decade, say analysts. </li><li>A CLSA report has said that Q1 EBITDA is going to fall by an average of 28% for all auto companies.</li><li><keyword id="44883" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maruti-Suzuki">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> cut production for the fifth consecutive month in June due to lack of demand.</li></ul>Indian automakers have been witnessing a massive slowdown in sales and that has resulted in stock analysts calling it the first quarter, their toughest quarter in a decade. CLSA, the capital markets research firm, has said that first quarter results for FY 20 is likely to be the weakest in a decade for the auto sector because of depressed volumes and margin pressure. The report further mentions that for the first quarter, pre-tax profits would fall by 28% year-on-year for the entire industry. While Maruti and Ashok Leyland could see their quarter’s profits decline by 35-43%, Eicher, <keyword id="45224" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahindra">Mahindra</keyword> and Motherson Sumi could see a 14-21% decline. “We remain cautious on the sector and have sell ratings SELLs on 70% of our stock coverage; on a relative basis, we continue to prefer Maruti , Eicher, and Motherson,” said the report. <keyword id="424067" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Car-sales-in-India">Car sales in India</keyword> have been falling for the last past few months. In May 2019, passenger car sales declined by 20.5%. One of India’s biggest car manufacturers, Maruti Suzuki had reported a decline by 21% in its car sales for May. In June, it fell again by 14%. In fact, the auto manufacturing giant cut production for the fifth consecutive month in June due to lack of demand. Its shares fell too, shedding ₹7,000 crore in market value in early July.

The launch of Maruti’s electric car will be significant because of the scale that the company brings to the table. Maruti Suzuki saw a domestic sale of 1.3 million until December, 2018 and has over 2000 sales outlets spread across the length and breadth of the country. The brand, with a history of over 37 years in India, has proved that it still has resonance amongst millions of Indians despite the entry of fancy foreign peers. “They might not have the first mover advantage, but the expertise they have is unmatched. Not just distribution, they have a great hold over their brand loyalty and customer development channels, which is also their USP,” said Pranav Jain, an automobile consultant. The pioneer in the segment has been Mahindra &amp; Mahindra with cars like e20, eVerito and eSupro already being commercially sold, while other rivals like Tata finding a foothold in the market with cars like Tata Tigor EV. However, access to these vehicles, recharging stations, and service centres after purchase are crucial factors in the consumers’ decision to purchase. Maruti is a better pick based on these factors than other players because of its existing network in the country. However, the company has taken its time to join the race. Osamu Suzuki, Chairman, Suzuki Motor corporation, during his visit to India for the <a href="https://www.firstpost.com/business/global-mobility-summit-suzuki-motor-corp-to-start-road-test-of-electric-vehicles-next-month-says-chairman-5136281.html">Global Mobility Summit</a> in September had announced that the company will launch 50 EV prototype vehicles in India. The idea behind the testing is to develop safe and easy-to-use EVs for the Indian roads. The Indian Electric Vehicle market saw a growth of 124 per cent with 56,000 units sold in fiscal year 2017-18, but they hold a <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Politics/1x96WeyG6cCVnm5zPcUraK/Govt-proposes-incentives-to-boost-EVsalesin5-years.html">mere 1% </a>of total vehicles sold in India. However, the major share was held by electric two-wheelers with 54,800 units sold reportedly. The sales of electric cars took a mere 1200 units, according to a report done by <a href="https://auto.ndtv.com/news/electric-car-sales-in-india-fall-in-fy18-electric-two-wheelers-record-healthy-growth-1934323">the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles. </a> Currently, the electric vehicles market in India faces a massive infrastructural problem due to the lack of charging stations (albeit they are slowly coming up in major cities like Bengaluru and Delhi). The government’s delay in bringing about an EV policy too has the industry in a fix. While the entry of big players will give the right impetus to a new generation of cars, the industry will also need a proactive solution from the centre.
