A 2023 Point-in-Time homeless census released earlier this year found at least 6,340 people were homeless in San Jose, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/6340-people-hundreds-of-youth-are-homeless-in-san-jose-annual-census-finds/">local media reported</a>.The quick-build development will be home to 75 mobile and solar-powered two-bed "cabins" that are built to last for 10 to 15 years, according to local outlets.Via Del Oro is unique in its flexible locale. Boeing and Airbus <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russian-airlines-may-not-have-enough-parts-repair-planes-sanctions-2022-3?amp">both stopped supplying Russian airlines</a> with spare parts as part of the sanctions last spring. Aircraft lessors in the European Union were <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russian-airlines-may-not-have-enough-parts-repair-planes-sanctions-2022-3?">required to end contracts</a> with Russian airlines last March.Days after the invasion, 33 countries, including all EU countries, the US, and the UK, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/map-shows-countries-that-closed-airspace-russia-over-ukraine-war-2022-3">banned Russian flights</a> from their airspace. Analysts predicted Russia <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russian-airlines-may-not-have-enough-parts-repair-planes-sanctions-2022-3?">could start "cannibalizing"</a> its fleet of planes for parts as Western sanctions blocked suppliers from sending parts and providing repairs for Russian airplanes. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law last March <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-is-seizing-hundreds-of-lessor-planes-poses-risk-passengers-2022-3?">giving Russian airlines control</a> over hundreds of planes built by Western companies and leased from international firms.Neither Aeroflot nor Mahan Air immediately responded to Insider's request for comment outside of normal business hours.According to Aeroflot, <a href="https://www.aeroflot.ru/ru-ru/about/plane_park">most of its fleet</a> of 179 aircraft are Airbus A320, Boeing 737-800, and Boeing 777-300ER planes.Sources also told RBC that Aeroflot has plans to send more A330 planes to Iran for repairs, but will decide if it will depending on how repairs on this first plane goes."Maintenance of the Airbus A330 aircraft [in Iran] will be performed by the provider on a wide range of works," an Aeroflot spokesperson told RBC. The agreement also included increasing the amount of passenger flights between the countries to 35 per week."During the decades of economic blockade by the West, Iran has acquired extensive competencies in the repair of aircraft and their components, Oleg Panteleev, executive director of the Russian AviaPort industry agency, told RBC. "These factors are enough to develop partnership relations with Iran." However, Iran's aviation fleet has had its <a href="https://asiatimes.com/2022/01/in-iran-there-is-reason-to-have-a-fear-of-flying/">own challenges from Western sanctions</a> that had been in place since the 1979 Iranian revolution, Asia Times reported. For decades, Iranian airlines had to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/iran-sanctions-aviation-idINKCN0V90A1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">smuggle airplane parts</a> to keep their fleets updated, Reuters reported, and the country has had a record of having some of the most <a href="https://asiatimes.com/2022/01/in-iran-there-is-reason-to-have-a-fear-of-flying/">unsafe airlines in the world</a>, per Asia Times.Iran wasn't able to buy planes or parts <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/iran-nuclear-deal-explained" target="_blank" rel="noopener">until it signed the Iran nuclear deal</a> in 2015, but the US pulled out of the deal in 2018, again curtailing Iran's ability to buy parts and planes. Between the time of the deal and the US's exit, Iran only received three Airbus jets, and 20 units of ATR 72-600 short-haul regional planes, <a href="https://asiatimes.com/2022/01/in-iran-there-is-reason-to-have-a-fear-of-flying/">Asia Times reported</a>.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>NATO's naval power is far superior to Russia's, which mainly exists to defend its motherland.</li><li>Russia's fear is that NATO ships could launch strike missiles at the Russian heartland.</li></ul>The age-old rivalry between continental and maritime nations has always been an exercise in frustration. For example, Napoleon and Hitler fumed at the English Channel and Royal Navy that kept their mighty armies from conquering Britain. Conversely, the British needed a continental power with a big army — usually Russia — to fight the French and Germans on land.Today, NATO's naval power is far superior to Russia's. The problem is Russia has always been a continental power whose strength rested on its army. NATO may dominate the oceans, but that may not be much help if Russian tanks invade the Baltic States or Poland.So, how can NATO exploit its naval advantage? Two British experts have an idea: use NATO's navies to wage psychological warfare against Russia. Or more specifically, use naval power to scare Moscow into allocating its scarce resources to defending its huge coastlines rather than invading neighbors."By forcing Russia to commit to its own defenses in the maritime domain, it would divert critical Russian resources to tasks that the Alliance [NATO] deems less threatening," wrote Sidharth Kaushal and Rene Balletta in an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.rusi.org/explore-our-research/publications/occasional-papers/asymmetric-approach-use-maritime-forces-competing-russia">essay</a> for Britain's Royal United Services Institute think tank.For America and Britain, the sea has been a friend: a buffer against invasion, a highway to overseas empire, and a way to ensure that wars are fought on foreign soil. But for Russia, with nearly 24,000 miles of coastline across Europe and Asia, the sea has historically been a source of vulnerability. Though the Russian Navy is one of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wdmmw.org/russian-navy.php">world's largest</a>, it mainly exists to protect the motherland, to support the army, and to provide strategic firepower such as from nuclear missile subs. Many of the cruise missiles that have pummeled Ukrainian cities for the past two years have been launched by the Black Sea Fleet.But control of the seas, in the way that the famous 19th Century American naval theorist <a target="_blank" href="https://thediplomat.com/2014/12/the-geopolitical-vision-of-alfred-thayer-mahan/">Alfred Thayer Mahan</a> defined it, is not the Russian Navy's mission. "Rather than naval combat per se, the purpose of Russian sea power is to ensure that the Russian state can compete and engage in conflict safely and effectively," the essay said.In the Crimean War of 1854, Russia was defeated by a British and French amphibious assault that captured Sevastopol. In 2024, the fear is that NATO ships could launch long-range guided missiles at the Russian heartland.There are several ways that NATO can exploit this fear, according to Kaushal and Balletta. Western nations can conduct exercises, forward deploy nuclear submarines closer to Russia, invest in drones and hypersonic missiles, and even convert shipboard anti-aircraft missiles – such as the US SM-2 and SM-6 — into land attack weapons.As Russia rebuilds its military to replace the enormous losses of the Ukraine war, the Kremlin may feel compelled to divert resources to naval rather than ground forces. "To the extent that the Alliance can expand the area over which Russia must achieve sea denial in order to protect itself against long-range strikes, it can shape the contours of Russian force regeneration," the essay argued. "It can achieve this primarily in two ways: by expanding its long-range land attack capability, and by operating on new vectors that Russia has not historically had to defend."The Kremlin will not find it easy to beef up its maritime defenses. "While Russia can achieve sea denial and a degree of sea control in its coastal seas, contesting freedom of action out to 1,000 kilometers and beyond will be difficult and costly for a country that must also rebuild its forces on land," said the essay. In particular, while Russia has a large arsenal of anti-ship missiles based on sea and land, it lacks the ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) capabilities <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-putin-invincible-zircon-hypersonic-missile-speed-accuracy-limitations-2023-2">to detect distant naval targets</a> and guide missiles toward them.Ships — especially those intended for blue-water rather than coastal operations — are also expensive to build, maintain, and to crews at a time when the Russian Army and Aerospace Forces are in desperate need of skilled personnel. Russian shipyards are already overburdened, and new vessels may need imported components that are blocked by Western sanctions.However, the West also suffers from constraints. As the authors acknowledge, some NATO members on Russia's border — such as Finland and Norway — may become nervous about making Russia nervous. And, of course, there is the fact that Russia has historically feared attack by the West – and it possesses the world's biggest nuclear arsenal. Stoking the Kremlin's fear of waves of cruise missiles streaking in from the sea carries a risk of nuclear escalation.Nonetheless, this approach does leverage NATO's maritime advantage. Given a choice, the Kremlin would probably prefer to spend resources on buying tanks to fight in Ukraine rather than warships to guard the Baltic. The study, published in the journal <keyword id="109074" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="current-biology" source="Orion">Current Biology</keyword>, showed that humanity may have been exposed to sarbecoviruses — which has the potential to jump from animals to humans — since the Paleolithic period — roughly 2.5 million years ago to 10,000 BC. Despite having a very rapid rate of evolution over short timescales, to survive, viruses must remain highly adapted to their hosts — this imposes severe restrictions on their freedom to accumulate mutations without reducing their fitness. This causes the apparent rate of evolution of viruses to slow down over time. The new research, for the first time, successfully recreates the patterns of this observed rate decay in viruses. The researchers developed a new method that can recover the age of viruses over longer timescales and correct for a kind of 'evolutionary relativity," where the apparent rate of evolution depends on the timescale of measurement. "Our estimate based on viral sequence data, of more than 21,000 years ago, is in remarkable concordance with a recent analysis on human genomic dataset that suggests infection with an ancient coronavirus around the same time," said Mahan Ghafari, from <keyword id="30725" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="oxford-university" source="Orion">Oxford University</keyword>. The study also demonstrates that while existing evolutionary models have often failed to measure the divergence between virus species over periods — from a few hundred to a few thousands of years — the evolutionary framework developed in this study will enable the reliable estimation of virus divergence across vast timescales, potentially over the entire course of animal and plant evolution. Besides SARS-CoV-2, The new model also enables reconstructing the evolutionary history of RNA and DNA viruses during more remote periods in the past. The model predictions for hepatitis C virus — a leading global cause of liver disease — are consistent with the idea that it has circulated for nearly a half a million years. HCV may thus have spread worldwide as an intrinsic part of the "Out-of-Africa" migration of modern humans around 150,000 years ago. The different genotypes of HCV indigenous to human populations in South and South-East Asia and Central Africa may have originated over this prolonged period and this revised timescale may resolve the longstanding riddle of their global distributions. Coronavirus epidemic first hit over 21,000 years ago, says a study

New Delhi, Jan 22 () Delhi-NCR, Mumbai and Pune are the three biggest markets for student housing in the country, and these cities require an additional 4.75 lakh beds from organised co-living operators to meet the current demand, according to a report.
 Cushman &amp; Wakefield (C&amp;W), in association with the Student Accommodation Providers Forum of India (SAPFI), on Wednesday released a report "Exploring the Student Housing Universe in India City Insights".
 The report has identified education clusters in the cities of Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR and Pune, the three biggest markets for professionally managed student accommodation (PMSA) operators.
 The report estimated 9.08 million migrant students in India, amounting to over 24 per cent of 37 million total student enrolments in the country's higher educational institutions (HEIs) for the year 2018-19. 
 "Delhi-NCR with 7.45 lakh students enrolled in HEIs as of 2018-19 has 50 per cent outstation students. There is demand for additional 2.5 lakh beds from PMSA operators," it said. 
 Bengaluru has the highest number of HEIs in India with student enrolments estimated at 5.38 lakh. 
 With 60 per cent outstation students, additional demand currently stands at around 92,000 beds, the report said. 
 In Pune, the report said student enrolment stood at nearly 4 lakh. With 60 per cent outstation students, additional capacity requirements in PMSA segment is 1.33 lakh beds.
 Anshul Jain, Country Head and Managing Director-India, Cushman and Wakefield, said: "The significant mass of migrant students in the higher education sector today demand and expect quality student accommodation facilities providing food, security and a range of amenities. While globally, PMSA has found its footing as part of the mainstream real estate sector, in India it is still in a nascent stage."
 With policy support and private investments, Jain said the student housing segment could be the next growth driver in the overall realty sector. 
 Kaushal Mahan, Convenor, SAPFI, said, "The sector is expected to witness a huge amount of foreign direct investment inflows resulting in job creation and economic development."
