"We expect CPI inflation to average 5.5 per cent (6.7 per cent in F23 estimates) and the current account deficit to track at 2.5 per cent of GDP in F24 (2.9 per cent in F23 estimates)." As regards to the repo rates, Morgan Stanley expects the <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> to hike in April and peg the terminal repo rate at 6.75 per cent. A shallow rate cut cycle (of cumulative 50 basis points) from 1Q24 as visibility on durable moderation in inflation improves, the report said. Mumbai, Jun 11 () RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on Thursday sought credit rating agencies' assessment of the macroeconomic situation and their outlook on various industries, including the financial sector, the central bank said in a statement. The RBI Governor met managing directors and chief executives of credit rating agencies (CRAs) through video conferencing. The meeting was also attended by the deputy governors and other senior officials of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). During the meeting, among other matters, agencies' assessment of the macroeconomic situation and outlook on various sectors, including the financial sector, was discussed. Other issues discussed included perspectives on the overall financial health of the entities rated by the CRAs and major factors that affect credit ratings in current context. By Bijay Kumar Singh New Delhi, Apr 5 () The Indian macroeconomic situation is bleak and all set to get worse if local or national lockdowns continue for some more time, renowned economist Jean Dreze said on Sunday. Dreze further said that due to the country-wide lockdown, social unrest in many parts of India has already started. The country is under a 21-day lockdown as part of larger efforts to curb spreading of coronavirus infections. "The situation is bleak and all set to get worse, if local or national lockdowns of varying intensity continue for some time, as is likely to happen. "Even otherwise, the world-wide recession is likely to have adverse affects on the Indian economy," the Belgian-born Indian economist told in an interview. Talking about the impact of the coronavirus outbreak on the Indian economy and job creation, Dreze noted that some sectors are badly affected, but segments like medical care may even grow during the crisis. "Most sectors would be unable to thrive if others are not in good shape. "... It's like, if a bicycle has a puncture, you cannot expect it to move forward on one wheel. In short, if the crisis lasts, it will spread to most parts of the economy, including the banking system," he emphasised. Observing that as soon as the lockdown is relaxed, migrant workers who are marooned in different parts will try to return home, Dreze pointed out that they will probably hesitate to migrate again for a while. "But there is hardly any work for them at home, except for some farming if they have land," he said, adding that because of reduced migration, sectors that rely heavily on migrant labour may face a shortage of manpower. Pointing out that already there are reports of shortage of labour for wheat harvest in parts of north India, Dreze said, "This is the paradox of this situation, that shortages and surpluses may coexist, because the circulation channels have been severely disrupted." Asked whether it is the right time to go for Universal Basic Income (UBI), he said this is not the time to reinvent the wheel. "That is why it is best to build on existing schemes for now, including the public distribution system and social security pensions. "... In other contexts, UBI may be feasible and appropriate, but in India today, it is a distraction," Dreze, a former member of the previous UPA government's National Advisory Council argued. Several international credit rating agencies have cut growth estimates for India in recent days on concerns about the fallout of the Covid-19 outbreak. According to Fitch Ratings, India may post in 2020-21 a GDP growth of 2 per cent, the slowest since the economy was liberalised 30 years back. Asian Development Bank (ADB) sees India's economic growth slipping to 4 per cent in the current fiscal (April 2020 to March 2021), while S&amp;P Global Ratings last week further slashed GDP growth forecast for the country to 3.5 per cent from the previous downgrade of 5.2 per cent. Lower government revenues, in turn, create the need for more borrowing, causing annual budget deficits and the national debt to spiral even higher," Masturzo added.Despite the Fed's best efforts, he noted that investors should also prepare for elevated inflation to stick around for the long term. Commodities will be the key driver of growth, especially as demand for them grows from both fossil fuel and renewable energy sectors.For investors looking to get ahead of these headwinds, Masturzo noted a handful of asset types: Safe havens, such as gold, real estate, commodities and some digital assets are attractive as current US debt levels will only get in the way of reducing inflation. Meanwhile, with real interest rates expected to remain positive, bonds will be a compelling investment. Economic Survey pegs growth at 6.5-7%; solidifying India's strong macroeconomic fundamentals: CBRE

The rise in <keyword id="6468581" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="housing-prices" source="Orion">housing prices</keyword> and mortgage rates have impacted affordability levels to buy homes in the last two years across seven major cities but it may improve next year due to a likely reduction in repo rate, according to JLL India. The improvement in affordability levels would further boost housing sales, which have risen despite increases in property prices and interest rates on home loans. The consultant on Sunday released its 'Home Purchase Affordability Index' (HPAI), which signifies whether a household earning an average annual income (at an overall city level) is eligible for a housing loan on a property in the city at the prevailing market price. "The rising repo rate in 2022 as the RBI reacted to the global recessionary and inflationary trends, plus a strong demand recovery spurring price hikes, worsened affordability in 2022," the report said. In 2023, the consultant said that affordability levels are likely to marginally worsen or remain the same when compared to 2022. A stronger price increase has been countered by stagnancy in repo rate movement, declining <keyword id="22195" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inflation" source="Orion">inflation</keyword> and relatively higher growth in household incomes, the consultant explained. "In 2024, we are likely to see a renaissance with affordability levels expected to be on an improving trajectory as <keyword id="493702" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="macroeconomic" source="Orion">macroeconomic</keyword> fundamentals support a repo rate reversal and thereby interest rate reduction that could provide another fillip to the residential sales market," the report said. JLL expects a 60-80 basis points reduction in repo in the next year. It has derived this index through a combination of variables, which include home loan interest rates, average household income and price of the residential apartment. The HPAI is the ratio of the average household income to the eligible household income. Eligible household income is defined as the minimum income that a household should earn to qualify for a home loan on a 1,000-square-foot apartment at the prevailing market price. A value of 100 means that a household has exactly enough income to qualify for the loan. A value less than 100 implies that an average household does not have enough income to qualify for a housing loan. A value of more than 100 implies that an average household has more than enough income to qualify for a home loan. As per the data, the affordability index in Mumbai is estimated to dip to 88 from 92. In Delhi NCR, the index is seen declining to 121 from 125. The Index of Bengaluru is estimated to have dipped to 158 from 168. The index in Hyderabad is seen at 169 against 174 last year. Pune will witness a marginal fall to 182 from 183, while Kolkata will see a marginal improvement to 194 from 193. The affordability index of Chennai is estimated to be flat at 162 this year. JLL India noted that affordability was at its lowest in 2013 before rising on a sustained basis through 2014 to hit optimal levels in 2021. "Despite residential price hikes being sustained in 2023, better economic and job prospects and healthier income growths compared to 2022 have led to a relatively minor dip in affordability in 2023. "In fact, affordability levels remain much above the pre-COVID and worst affordability periods for all cities, clearly highlighting the headroom for market growth to continue," said Siva Krishnan, Managing Director and Head of Residential Services, India, JLL.

"There is a risk that this [relief package] will overheat the economy and cause inflation. However, it's really in our estimation that the risk of doing too little is actually greater the risk of doing too much."

Coca-Cola had a pretty good quarter despite 'uncertain and volatile macroeconomic environment'

Swiss technology firm Logitech has laid off 300 employees amid the challenging global macro-economic environment, the media reported on Thursday. In a major global reorganisation, the maker of computer accessories has decided to cut about 300 jobs, reports People Matters. According to Logitech President and CEO Bracken Darrell, the slump in the business was due to challenging global broader macroeconomic environment and "lower enterprise and consumer spending". Logitech had 8,200 employees as of March 2022. The company has also cut its outlook for the year. "Regrettably, a number of our employees were affecteda by the changes, a company spokesperson was quoted as saying in the report. Logitech's revenue nosedived to $1.3 billion in its fiscal 2023 third quarter, 22 per cent down from a year earlier. "This performance reflects the challenging macroeconomic environment. Category sales declined in both US dollars and constant currency," the company said in January this year. Compared to Q3 of the prior year, Gaming sales declined 16 per cent and video collaboration sales declined 21 per cent. Keyboards and Combos sales declined 22 per cent and pointing devices sales declined 14 per cent. "This reflects consumer purchasing concentrated in promotional weeks throughout the quarter, and lower enterprise and consumer spending," said the company. "These quarterly results reflect the current challenging macroeconomic conditions, including currency exchange rates and inflation, as well as lower enterprise and consumer spending," said Darrell. Logitech's Fiscal Year 2023 outlook has been adjusted to between negative 13-15 per cent negative sales growth in constant currency. Logitech lays off 300 employees as computer accessories sales drop

He believes US economy is not facing an era of secular stagnation.
Secular stagnation is the idea that the economy won't be able to create enough demand to sustain its growth trend unless interest rates are extraordinarily low. The idea has been much debated since Larry Summers addressed it in a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/larry-summers-imf-speech-on-the-zero-lower-bound-2013-11">speech</a> at the IMF last year.&#xa0;
In November, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-sachs-on-secular-stagnation-2014-11">we highlighted comments</a> from Goldman Sachs economist&#xa0;Jari Stehn, who revisited Summers' hypothesis about a year after his speech. Stehn argued that so far, the US economy is showing signs it might not be fated to secular stagnation.
And in a long, pre-dawn (in California time) tweetstorm, noted venture capitalist <a href="https://twitter.com/pmarca">Marc Andreessen</a> also argued that the secular stagnation Summers and others are so worried about - namely that we are fated to a subpar economy for the foreseeable future - may be overblown.&#xa0;
Andreessen sees an economy that faces the core problem of too much capital facing too few investment opportunities, rather than an economy that is simply stuck in the mud and can't get back to a pre-financial crisis growth trend.&#xa0;
