Naravane's visit is largely aimed at resetting relations with the Himalayan nation after the ties came under severe strain following a bitter border row. Gen Naravane is visiting Nepal at the official invitation of Nepal Army chief Gen Purnachandra Thapa. Indian Embassy spokesperson Naveen Kumar said that Gen Naravane's visit "will deepen the long-standing and customary bonds of friendship between the two armies." "His visit will provide an opportunity for both sides to discuss the bilateral defence partnership and explore avenues to further strengthen it for mutual benefit." Gen Naravane will pay homage at the martyrs' memorial at the Army Pavilion on Thursday morning and receive a guard of honour at the Nepal Army headquarters, according to Nepal Army sources. He will hold formal talks with his Nepalese counterpart at the Nepal Army headquarters on Thursday. Mutual interests between the two armies and bilateral relations will mainly feature during the talk, Nepal Army sources said. India's decision to send the Army Chief to Nepal to reset the ties is seen as part of a larger exercise by New Delhi to rejuvenate relations with Myanmar, the Maldives, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Afghanistan in the wake of greater efforts by China to expand its influence in the region. The ties between the two countries came under strain after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated an 80-km-long strategically crucial road connecting the Lipulekh pass with Dharchula in Uttarakhand on May 8. Nepal protested the inauguration of the road claiming that it passed through its territory. Days later, Nepal came out with the new map showing Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura as its territories. After Nepal released the map, India reacted sharply, calling it a "unilateral act" and cautioning Kathmandu that such "artificial enlargement" of territorial claims will not be acceptable to it. In June, Nepal's Parliament approved the new political map of the country featuring areas which India maintains belong to it. In its reaction after Nepal's lower house of parliament approved the bill, India termed as untenable the "artificial enlargement" of territorial claims by the neighbouring country. India said Nepal's action violates an understanding reached between the two countries to resolve the boundary issues through talks. Indian Army chief visits forward locations and reviewed tense situation with China

In a solemn ceremony earlier in the day, General Naravane laid a wreath on the 'Veer Smarak' at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel, Kathmandu, following which he visited the Nepali Army Headquarters and was accorded with a ceremonial Guard of Honour. At the headquarters, he held the meeting with General Thapa, during which the Indian Army chief was also given a comprehensive briefing by senior officers of the Nepali Army. Also on Thursday, Naravane handed over various medical equipment to the Nepal Army, which included X-Ray machines, computed radiography systems, ICU ventilators, video endoscopy units, anesthesia machines, laboratory equipment and ambulances. Additional ventilators were also gifted to assist the Nepali Army in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic. This follows an earlier army-to-army provision of ventilators in July this year. Later in the day, Naravane will receive the honorary rank of general of Nepal Army on Thursday, which will be conferred to him by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari during a function in the President's Office, according to the Nepal Army. Nepal and India have a historic tradition of conferring the honorary title to each other's army chief since 1950. He will be the 18th Indian Army Chief to be conferred with the title. General Naravane is also scheduled to hold talks with the President later. The Indian Army chief landed in Kathmandu on Wednesday for a three-day official visit to Nepal, on the invitation of General Thapa. He was received at the airport by Lieutenant General Prabhu Ram Sharma, CGS Nepali Army and officials of the Indian Embassy. The ties between the two countries came under strain recently after China increased its influence on Nepal. It was India's road construction to the Lipulekh area at 17,000 feet that sparked a diplomatic row between India and Nepal as Kathmandu claimed the area to be its territory. The road was constructed to shorten the travel time for pilgrims visiting the Kailash Mansarovar. Lipulekh is a tri-junction between India, Nepal and China situated atop the Kalapani Valley in Uttarakhand. After this, Nepal brought out a new political map showing the contested area as its own. India has rejected this new map of Nepal saying it is not based on historical facts or evidence. Indian and Nepal discuss enhancing bilateral defence cooperation during Indian Army Chief Naravane's three-day visit

New Delhi, Women will be inducted as pilots in the Army Aviation Corps from next year, <keyword id="6354416" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane said on Tuesday. Till now, women are only part of ground duties in the Army Aviation Corps. Women pilots would be flying helicopters to forward locations and be part of operations at the borders, the Army Chief said, adding that the proposal has been cleared. The <keyword id="15141" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Air-Force">Indian Air Force</keyword> has 10 women fighter pilots. In the <keyword id="6355100" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Navy">Indian Navy</keyword>, women pilots are flying the Dornier aircraft and also as observers on board helicopters and P8I surveillance aircraft. Other than the 10 fighter pilots, the <keyword id="6355075" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IAF">IAF</keyword> has 111 women pilots who fly transport planes and choppers. During his annual press conference in New Delhi, General Naravane said: "Last month, I had initiated a proposal that women officers can be recruited to Army Aviation. The next course which will begin in July this year, will induct women for training purposes in flying branch and after one year they will be able to join in operational duties." The Indian Army raised the Army Aviation Corps on November 1, 1986 and it comprises helicopters that fly in conflict and peace zones. The Aviation Corps is critical for the Indian Army as it is pressed into action for evacuation of injured troops during operations or health emergencies in high altitude areas. Army Aviation Corps choppers are also used for reconnaissance, observation, casualty evacuation, essential load drops, and combat search and rescue. The helicopters participate in <keyword id="398565" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="humanitarian-aid">Humanitarian Aid</keyword> and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations across the country. It started at 10.30 am on Sunday and ended at 2.30 a.m. on Monday. Lieutenant General P.G.K. Menon, the Corps Commander of Leh-based HQ 14 Corps, led the Indian delegation. India has sought complete disengagement and withdrawing of forces from the disputed areas. The <keyword id="2560336" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="military-commanders">military commanders</keyword> to convey the details of the meeting to Prime Minister Office. India and China held a 16-hour long talk to resolve ongoing border dispute

As per plans, India will be acquiring 30 MQ-9 Reaper -- 10 each for the three services. The procurement is being done as India is facing war-like situation on two fronts -- Pakistan and China. The approval to take these armed drones could be finalised during Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) meeting lead by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. To further cement the deal, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin is expected to visit India later this month. India is becoming a strategic defence partner for the US, especially countering Chinese influence in the <keyword id="12350" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Ocean">Indian Ocean</keyword>. These MQ-9B Predator drones are manufactured by San Diego-based <keyword id="834093" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="General-Atomics">General Atomics</keyword>. The MQ-9B has an endurance of 48 hours and a range of over 6,000 nautical miles. It carries maximum payload of 2-tonne. India plans to buy 30 MQ-9 Reaper drones for $3 billion from US company General Atomics

Legere to the top position of the <keyword id="6354810" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Defense">Defense</keyword> Intelligence Agency is a seriously misguided move, according to one congressman. 
Congressman Duncan Hunter sent a letter today to Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper warning against Legere's nomination. 
Hunter's complaints center around promises that the Army would provide cloud capability through the Army's Distributed Common Ground System program. This program is still not operational in the theater, despite having been received approximately $500 million from Congress since 2010. 
Moreover, Hunter believes that Legere should also be held accountable for a series of failed initiatives that were meant to support soldiers. 
Hunter writes: 
... Lt. Gen. Legere, in addition to Maj. Gen. Stephen Fogarty, Commander of U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command, holds principal responsibility for failing to deliver urgent capabilities to the warfighter and overseeing initiatives that have repeatedly failed to meet budget and schedule requirements. These failures have manifested in several areas, including poor technical execution, a lack of response to urgent operational needs, unwarranted influence over official assessments, serious breaches of federal funding requirements, and misleading statements to Congress. 
Legere is currently the Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence of the U.S. Army. She is currently tied for the highest-ranking female general. 
Legere is rumored to be considered for nomination as the next director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, following Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn's abrupt retirement yesterday.

James Amos - as a reminder that no matter how bad you think your day is, it's important to remain positive.
The initial correspondence, first sent out by Lt. Col. Corey Collier, the battalion commander of 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, shares the story of Cpl. Ian Gorman, a machine gunner serving under Collier in Bravo Company.
In the <keyword id="6359526" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Military">military</keyword>, the gear troops are issued - helmets, magazine pouches, weapons, etc - all need to be returned in the same condition it was received. If it's lost or gets busted, a lost/damaged/missing gear statement needs to be filled out, and often ends in the service members pay being docked.
"I just signed what was probably the best damaged/missing gear statement I've seen," Collier writes in his email. "Cpl Gorman: 'I was shot in the helmet by enemy. I need a new one.I do not desire to reimburse the government.'"
The email quickly went from Collier's immediate superior, Col. Daniel Sullivan, who described Gorman as "a real character," up to many senior officers and enlisted leaders in a matter of hours, before finally reaching the commandant's inbox.
Gorman's short statement, mentioning getting shot in the helmet like it's no big deal, can certainly put things in perspective.
Journalist Michael Yon <a href="https://www.facebook.com/MichaelYonFanPage/posts/10151851990060665">first got a copy of the email</a>, which Business Insider also obtained.
