<ul class="summary-list"><li>Sarvesh Rajagopal moved back to India in 2024 after a decade in the Middle East and Europe.</li><li>He left due to career stagnation and Europe's economic challenges, including the war in Ukraine.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Sarvesh Rajagopal, who lived in the United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, and Germany before moving back to India. It has been edited for length and clarity. Business Insider has verified his employment history.I joined McKinsey right after graduating from my masters in India.I spent the next three years with the company in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-to-us-from-india-big-tech-changed-me-2024-7">India</a>, then moved to the company's office in Dubai for two years, and then to Amsterdam. Getting a chance to live and work overseas was a dream.A little while after moving to Amsterdam, I decided that I had had enough consulting. The constant travel was also getting tiring. I left McKinsey and worked for the Dutch bank ING as a corporate strategist for over a year before moving to the logistics company Wayfair in 2019. I was one of the first employees in the Berlin office, tasked with building the company's international business, which I still think was the most challenging but fulfilling period of my career.<h2 id="893dd95a-7f9c-4453-bde6-beb32c14f608">Life in Europe</h2>Things were going well from a lifestyle point of view, too.I enjoyed being done with work by 5 or 6 p.m. and having the rest of the day to myself. Public transport was a big plus — I enjoyed never owning or needing a car to get around to meet colleagues or friends for dinner or a beer.One of the best parts of Europe was that if we had a long weekend, I could go to a nearby country by train in a couple of hours.One of the only drawbacks is that it's not the best place to earn and build wealth because of high taxes.<div type="image" title="Group photo of various colleagues at office event in Berlin" height="1200" width="1600" msid="113377534" hostid="261" sizebytes="247660"></div><h2 id="e8d45754-5383-4984-99de-02128eba0b9f">Slow growth in Europe</h2>The itch to return to India started around three years ago.I'd been watching India's growth since I left and felt like I had missed the boom by leaving in 2014. Many of my friends back home have <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quit-tech-job-launch-startup-now-make-400000-2024-4">built startups</a> or venture capital careers. I wanted to be part of India's growth story.I also felt like there was no career growth for me in Europe. In India, I had a big network from India's top tech and management schools and because of my time at McKinsey.I also wanted to be close to family, especially since my parents are getting older.My inflection point was realizing in mid-2023 that my career had stagnated because I was at a senior level and was finding it difficult to grow. The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukrainian-women-train-blue-collar-jobs-workforce-gap-war-electrician-2024-8">war in Ukraine</a> and other macroeconomic factors like inflation also affected my decision.I worked with a professional coach before making a firm decision. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/took-sabbatical-returned-work-better-employeee-2024-9">I traveled around Latin America</a>, and being in a new environment really sealed the deal for me.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quit-job-at-meta-bali-trip-moved-into-childhood-home-2024-8">I quit my job</a> and finally moved back to India in May.<h2 id="93bdcf9f-12d3-4eba-9b17-bc4210b5a753">Adjusting back</h2>After <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-and-uk-life-biggest-differences-after-moving-home-space-2024-7">a decade of living away</a>, there are things I'm having to get used to again.I'm still adapting to the pollution, the traffic, and the sheer number of people. The number of cars and two-wheelers on the road has exploded, which makes driving and parking a lot more stressful.But some things have also become much more convenient since I left 10 years ago.I remember having to call a restaurant if I ever wanted to eat in, but India now has food and grocery delivery services that promise to deliver any food or household items in under 10 minutes.It's a lot easier to find and afford domestic support, and I have a cook. For my friends with newborn children, live-in nannies are available. These feel like huge luxuries compared to Europe, where my immigrant friends struggled with childcare — their parents were happy to help but could only stay in Germany for 90 days at a time.I'm also able to afford an all-inclusive apartment complex, where I have easy access to a pool, a gym, and a supermarket.I'm volunteering as a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-vc-wants-see-5-traits-new-founders-fundraising-antler-2024-8">mentor for startups</a> at an incubator at my alma mater and have noticed a big mindset shift among people in their early 20s. When I graduated with my engineering degree, my classmates and I thought our only career options were to join a company, study abroad for a master's, or pursue an MBA at the Indian Institute of Management.But the students now are a lot more willing to take risks and dive into entrepreneurship.I'm currently on a career break. I want to familiarize myself with India again and then hope to build a venture of my own in the next few years.

Logistics technology platform <keyword id="4178573" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="shiprocket" source="Orion">Shiprocket</keyword> on Friday said it has signed a definitive agreement for a $185 million (₹1,380 crore) Series E funding round, co-led by <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword>, <keyword id="12707014" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Temasek-and-Lightrock-India" source="Orion">Temasek and Lightrock India</keyword>. This marks Shiprocket's third round of funding in 2021, bringing the total funds raised to $280 million. Shiprocket focuses on providing Amazon Prime-like shipping experiences for sellers and consumers across India in direct-to-consumer e-commerce. "We are excited about the vast, untapped opportunity that lies in post-purchase technology enablement in the D2C e-commerce space. This fundraise is a validation of the hard work put in by the entire Shiprocket team over the last 4 years," said Saahil Goel, CEO and Co-founder, Shiprocket. New investors, Moore Strategic Ventures and 9unicorns, are also participating in this round, along with existing investors, InfoEdge Ventures and March Capital. Launched in 2017, Shiprocket is the fastest company to become profitable in 24 months while also doubling its ARR (annual run rate) over the last 6 months. Shiprocket said it will deploy fresh funds towards aggressive core product expansion, research and development, talent acquisition, and development of a comprehensive suite of products for retailers. "With the launch of our services in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in November 2021, we have also taken the first step towards expanding our footprint in new geographies," said Goel. Shiprocket also provides a technology stack to help retailers integrate their shopping websites on Shopify, Magento, WooCommerce, Zoho and others for workflow, inventory and order management. Logistics startup Shiprocket raises $185 million from Zomato and others

<ul><li>An overall growth of 150% was recorded in the payments/salaries to gig workers between October 2021 and September 2022. </li><li>The potential of gig workers can grow further if online retail grows across the country. </li><li>The report predicts that the penetration of online retail was just 5% in 2019 and is expected to grow to 11% by 2024.</li></ul>As more e-commerce platforms enter the 10-minute delivery space, demand for gig workers has not only ballooned – but their monthly earnings have increased too. A report by StrideOne, a tech-enabled NBFC, titled ‘The Startup Economy Report 2022’ says that 25% of gig workers surveyed reported an over 50% rise in their monthly income as compared to their previous mode of livelihood – in the last one year. An overall growth of 150% was recorded in the payments/salaries to gig workers between October 2021 and September 2022, the report said. Majority of the gig workers are engaged in retail trade and sales which includes fast commerce like food and beverage, grocery, medicines delivery etc. Around 56% of the gig workers surveyed previously had full-time employment. “Startups are limiting their hiring of permanent employees. Gig workers have begun to replace these permanent employees,” the report said. The number of companies who shifted to a semi-gig workforce model has increased by 15% since October 2021. The potential of gig workers can grow if online retail expands across the country. The report predicts that the penetration of online retail was 5% in 2019, and is expected to grow to 11% by 2024. Non-farm sectors of <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> have the potential to add over 90 million gig jobs in the longer term, the report predicts. As of now, the <keyword id="3080230" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gig-economy" source="Orion">gig economy</keyword> constitutes 1.5% of the total workforce in India and is expected to expand to 23.5 million by 2024 constituting 4% of the workforce. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Startup ecosystem of India" comment="subhead" text="Startup ecosystem of India"><keyword id="15794501" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="startup-ecosystem-of-India" source="Orion">Startup ecosystem of India</keyword></cmsannotation> The number of jobs created by the startup ecosystem of India, which is said to be the third largest in the world, grew by 78% CAGR between 2017 and 2022. It is further projected to grow at a CAGR of 24% from 2022-27. The ecosystem altogether created over 2 lakh jobs this year, according to the report. However, several startups like Byju’s, Udaan laid off several employees from its workforce as a part of their retrenchment due to funding winter. “The rapid growth phase and maturity of the ecosystem have unlocked tremendous appetite for scalability, alternate funding options, expansion into the global market and the capacity to enable millions of jobs. This meteoric rise of startups has made India the third largest startup ecosystem in the world and has significantly impacted the Indian economy showcasing the ability to contribute approximately 4-5% to the gross domestic product (GDP) of India,” said Ishpreet Singh Gandhi, founder, StrideOne. Sectors like textile, apparel and logistics however retain the title of being the biggest job creators in the country. The textile industry is said to be the second largest employer in India, which has given direct employment to 5 crore people, and 10 crore people in allied industries. Whereas, logistics sector currently employs 22 million people and is estimated to contribute 11% to the overall GDP of the country. A quarter of Indian gig workers’ salaries grew by 50% in the last one year

As Indian startups face turbulence in the global funding winter, experts on Monday said they need to reserve cash, create a long-term goal and adopt a culture of customer feedback to survive in 2023. On the occasion of the 'National Startup Day', envisioned by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword> last year, industry experts said that the founders must continuously monitor the trends which are happening in the world. Indian startups fired more than 18,000 employees in 2022 amid a funding winter and macroeconomic uncertainty. "Investing in R&amp;D can be one of the finest ways to actually tackle disruption. Make sure that as a business, you keep some of your profits or your balance sheet reserves for investing into R&amp;D to actually learn more," Dr Ritesh Malik, Director, <keyword id="6365866" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="alliance" source="Orion">Alliance</keyword> for <keyword id="2947744" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="digital-india-foundation" source="Orion">Digital India Foundation</keyword>, or <keyword id="1429787" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="adif" source="Orion">ADIF</keyword>, told IANS. "If you feel that there is a platform like Instagram where the go-to-market strategy is more efficient, start learning Instagram and start promoting your products there," he added. According to <keyword id="6061635" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tejas-khoday" source="Orion">Tejas Khoday</keyword>, Co-Founder and CEO of trading platform FYERS, this year is special as India has emerged to be the third largest startup ecosystem in the world. "While the past year was turbulent with IPOs of several well-known startups not doing too well, the ongoing funding winter and related layoffs, in the long run, all this will be a blip on the radar," he said. That said, this will help the ecosystem to mature and hopefully and we will see startups achieve a better balance between scale and profitability in 2023, Khoday noted. While interacting with over 150 startups, <keyword id="2238662" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pm-modi" source="Orion">PM Modi</keyword> last year announced the commemoration of National Startup Day on January 16 every year. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade and the <keyword id="6416832" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ministry-of-commerce-and-industry" source="Orion">Ministry of Commerce and Industry</keyword> marked an entire week as <keyword id="16072714" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-startup-week" source="Orion">National Startup Week</keyword>, from January 10 to 16. According to Malik, startups must hear back from their customers. "The more you hear from your customers, the more you will be able to understand their changing needs. And the more your product becomes dynamic and you constantly change that product to the whims and fantasies of the customer," he noted. <keyword id="3337958" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ravish-naresh" source="Orion">Ravish Naresh</keyword>, CEO and Co-founder of Khatabook, said that there is a stronger acknowledgment of Indian startups' role in solving core problems of emerging economies to bridge the socio-economic gaps. We are optimistic about the Indian economy and its opportunities for the startup ecosystem," he said.
