It's been years since she last stopped by the Michelin-rated hawker stall that sits just a few blocks from her home.The stall in question is <a href="https://guide.michelin.com/sg/en/singapore-region/singapore/restaurant/chey-sua-carrot-cake" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chey Sua Carrot Cake</a> in Toa Payoh West Market and Food Centre, about six miles north of Singapore's Central Business District. Manned by two sisters who <a href="https://www.zaobao.com.sg/znews/singapore/story20190820-982511" target="_blank" rel="noopener">took over the family business in 1991</a>, the hawker stall has just one item on its menu — white carrot cake.White carrot cake is a <a href="https://www.visitsingapore.com/dining-drinks-singapore/local-dishes/carrot-cake/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">savory dish made with rice flour and white radish</a> that's steamed, cut into chunks, and then fried with garlic, eggs, and preserved radish that's known as "chai poh."Chew, who prefers to be known by her initials, started patronizing the hawker stall back when the current owners' parents were still operating the outlet. Long lines were not unusual, she told Insider, but they used to require only about 10 to 15 minutes of waiting in the mornings — before the eatery won a <a href="https://guide.michelin.com/sg/en/singapore-region/singapore/restaurant/chey-sua-carrot-cake">Michelin Bib Gourmand</a> in 2016."The wait times have definitely gotten longer with the award," she said. Seven years ago it was clear that Michelin — known originally for rating fine dining restaurants — wanted a slice of the pie. The <a href="https://guide.michelin.com/sg/en/about-us" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michelin Guide</a> compiles lists of the top dining establishments in various countries. The guide includes different types of awards: Michelin Stars are reserved for the cream of the crop, while a Michelin Bib Gourmand is awarded to eateries where good food is served at <a href="https://guide.michelin.com/en/article/features/the-bib-gourmand" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"a reasonable price."</a> While Michelin started off rating cuisine across Europe, the list of countries has expanded globally over the years. The first guide in Asia was for <a href="https://travelweekly.co.uk/articles/24075/michelin-enters-asian-market-with-tokyo-food-guide-28-mar-2007" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tokyo</a> and was published in 2007.The inaugural <a href="https://guide.michelin.com/sg/en/article/news-and-views/michelin-guide-singapore-launch" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michelin Guide Singapore</a> was first unveiled in 2016. This year, the tire company released an <a href="https://guide.michelin.com/sg/en/article/michelin-star-revelation/singapore-bib-gourmand-2023" target="_blank" rel="noopener">updated Michelin Bib Gourmand list</a> on June 15, with 17 new hawker stores making the cut.<h2>Michelin's controversial decision to judge Asian street food </h2>But the decision for Michelin to start rating hawker food in the country is a controversial one: Their <a href="https://guide.michelin.com/sg/en/the-inspection-process-sg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">review processes</a> are vague and their inspectors are <a href="https://guide.michelin.com/th/en/michelin-guide-inspectors" target="_blank" rel="noopener">anonymous</a>, which can make it difficult for the diners to determine if they're truly credible when it comes to local fare.<div type="image" title="The stall proudly displays its Michelin star plaque." height="3292" width="4390" msid="101442377" hostid="261"></div>KF Seetoh, the famed food critic and founder of Singapore's first food travel guide <a href="https://makansutra.com/ebook/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Makansutra</a>, believes that the Michelin Guide doesn't improve the city-state's food scene. "Almost all of what they've recommended is already in Makansutra. I don't really learn anything new," Seetoh, who also owns Makansutra Gluttons Bay in Singapore and Urban Hawker in Midtown Manhattan, told Insider. Seetoh's first edition of Makansutra was released in 1998 and included Singapore's best heritage, traditional, and hawker street food. "Frankly, they should just stick to what they're good at. Let Singaporeans judge our own food," Seetoh added. But many hawkers disagree — including one of Singapore's most high-profile street chefs: Chan Hong Meng.<h2>Putting Singapore's hawker food on the global map</h2><div type="image" title="Chef Chan Hon Meng." height="1365" width="1820" msid="101442380" hostid="261"></div>In 2016, Chan's <a href="https://www.insider.com/worlds-cheapest-michelin-starred-meal-singapore-hawker-chan-photos-2021-2">Chinatown hawker stall Hawker Chan</a> made history by becoming one of just <a href="https://www.insider.com/jay-fai-michelin-star-bangkok-street-food-stall-review-price-2022-8">three street food stalls to be awarded a Michelin star.</a> The stall, which specializes in Singapore's de facto national dish Hainanese chicken rice, became famous overnight — and achieved cult status among foodies worldwide. The <a href="https://www.insider.com/chicken-rice-urban-hawker-nyc-singapore-price-comparison-2022-10">dish is made with seasoned rice and poached or roasted chicken</a>. Just a year later, the <a href="https://guide.michelin.com/en/singapore-region/singapore/restaurant/hawker-chan-soya-sauce-chicken-rice-noodle" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fast-casual offshoot of Chan's hawker stall was awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand</a>.But Chan believes that being named on the Michelin Guide's <a href="https://guide.michelin.com/th/en/to-the-stars-and-beyond-th#:~:text=Not%20quite%20a%20star%2C%20but,good%20food%20at%20moderate%20prices." target="_blank" rel="noopener">"budget"</a> list is still good for his food's reputation. The Michelin Bib Gourmand, Chan said, gives the same affirmation to his food as the coveted star — and that ultimately, these lists help raise the profile of local food. "I feel blessed to have retained the award for five years. The Bib Gourmand gives me the motivation that my food is on the right track, and that we're not losing our way or direction," he continued. Leslie Tay, who's behind local food blog <a href="https://ieatishootipost.sg/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ieatishootipost</a>, agrees that the Michelin spotlight makes a big difference to the livelihoods of the hawkers who are featured. "The Michelin Guide is globally known, especially for tourists coming to Singapore. It's something that they can easily get hold of and it's a name that they have a certain level of trust in," Tay told Insider. <div type="image" title="Chef Chan Hon Meng." height="1365" width="1820" msid="101442384" hostid="261"></div>While Michelin's ratings of hawker fare have been met with debate in Singapore, they help to enrich the multiplicity of food opinion, Debbie Yong, a restaurant industry observer, told Insider."The Michelin Guide's ratings of hawker food are understandably controversial and not unique to Michelin — anyone who has ever tried to voice an opinion on food, hawker or otherwise, is bound to stir up debate in a country that is so madly passionate about food," Yong said.<h2>The struggle with long queues and fallen standards</h2>Some locals believe that the surge in popularity has impacted the overall eating experience at Michelin-recognized hawkers."Singaporeans know that good food is worth queuing up for — I am no exception," Jonathan Lee told Insider. "But when my favorite claypot rice at Chinatown made it on the list a few years ago, the line was quite maddening and I just never wanted to go back again.""It takes around 20 minutes on average to get my claypot chicken, and waiting 45 minutes to an hour is overkill," Lee added.Waiting time aside, others see a difference in terms of food standards."If you catch Mr Chan during his shift at the original stall, you'll find that the food is still great and the price cheap. But the outlets are pretty bad — <a href="https://stomp.straitstimes.com/singapore-seen/customer-shocked-that-hawker-chans-roast-pork-rice-is-now-810-after-40-hike" target="_blank" rel="noopener">overpriced</a> and honestly not up to standard," Jeanette Lee, a local whose office is located five minutes from Chan's Chinatown hawker stall, told Insider.Seetoh said that Hawker Chan's demotion from Michelin star to Bib Gourmand is likely due to dropping standards in quality, as the stall rapidly expanded into a franchise. Today, Chan has expanded his brand to eight countries, including Australia, Thailand, and the Philippines. "Your humble mom-and-pop recipe has to be so well replicated. I think they failed because they just cut and paste. The only person who knows the food very well is Chan himself," Seetoh said. On the other hand, he added that the only remaining Michelin-starred hawker in Singapore — Tai Hwa Pork Noodle — has one stall and retains its artisanal qualities.<div type="image" title="Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle." height="1107" width="1476" msid="101442387" hostid="261"></div>But few hawkers are interested in expanding the same way that Chan did — and that might be their saving grace."When you have one hawker stall, there is the founder and owner, the passionate guy who's been doing it for 20 years," Tay said. "If the hawker stall just remains as one hawker stall, the standard isn't likely to go down."<h2>Hawkers still striving to land on the Bib Gourmand </h2>Apart from generating buzz, it's hard to tell if a Michelin rating accurately indicates good hawker food. "I think the Michelin Bib Gourmand has been helpful in highlighting cheaper eats, but it is also quite annoying," Jonathan Lee said. When the demand for a certain hawker's food goes up, that stress on the hawker causes quite a few problems, including longer wait times, increased prices, and a drop in quality, he added."But I guess it's the circle of life because I also give other patrons grief when I visit their favorite stalls when it gets published on the list," he added.Moreover, there are plenty of great eats that are known locally, but never made it onto the list."A hawker stall's Michelin recognition doesn't really mean its a better experience and since I know some places without a star that serve amazing food, I see no real difference," Lee said.But this doesn't stop hawkers from striving for the Michelin Guide's recognition.<div type="image" title="Chef Louis Tan." height="1365" width="1820" msid="101442389" hostid="261"></div>Louis Tan, another chicken rice vendor based at Maxwell Food Center in Chinatown, believes that being included in the Bib Gourmand list is something that's highly prized among hawkers. Tan, who trained as a fine dining chef in London, knows exactly what the Michelin Guide is about. The lenders of RCom too wanted the new buyer to take some of the debt off the books, which was at ₹46,000 crore. However, the buyer was not too keen on taking it on, leading to differences. Now that RCom is in bankruptcy court, the situation might have a buyer’s advantage. For Mukesh Ambani’s Jio, which started operations on 2016, RCom’s assets will come in handy. Not only is Jio planning to gain as much as half the share of the country’s telecom usage, it is also<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/mukesh-ambanis-reliance-jio-speeds-up-its-broadband-plan/articleshow/70139677.cms"> building a massive</a> fibre-to-home infrastructure and cater to the data needs of 75 million homes. In Anil Ambani’s words, the land assets at Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge Centre (DAKC) are valued at over ₹26,000 crore, said the Business Today report. RCom has been on Mukesh’s radar for a long time, as it is said that he had envisioned the group’s entry into the telecom sector, and laid the groundwork. However, when the group split in 2004, RCom went into Anil’s kitty.RC Gradually, as RCom shifted technology from CDMA to GSM, it had made investments to expand and shift gears. By then, new competition had come in the form of Tata Docomo that took pricing power away, throwing it into trouble. The rest of the damage was done by evolving technologies which RCom could not keep up with, or even sell assets like it wanted to. All in all, RCom almost took the promoter Anil Ambani to jail. Supreme Court had ordered him to pay dues to the tune of ₹460 crore to Ericsson its vendor or go to jail. Mukesh had to step in and make the payment last minute to save him. The company's market value expanded to ₹665 crore after the listing. The company, incorporated in 2016, engages in the business of home healthcare and wellness products. It sells blood pressure monitors, pulse oximeters, thermometers, nebulisers, and self-monitoring glucose devices under the brand name Dr Trust. Nureca's asset-light business model was successful in attracting investment experts. The model allows Nureca to enter into agreements with vendors who manufacture the products as per the specifications. This allows the company to quickly scale its operations at a predetermined cost without incurring any capital expenditure on manufacturing facilities. The initial public offer of Nureca, which closed last month, was subscribed 40 times. The offer of the Nureca, which got fully subscribed on the first day itself on February 16, received bids for 5.5 crore shares against 14 lakh shares on offer. The non-institutional investors' category was subscribed 31.59 times, and qualified institutional buyers(QIBs) was subscribed 3.10 times. Grey market premium fizzled out ahead of the listing Although the high number of subscriptions showed an excellent demand for its shares, just days ahead of the listing, the company's grey market premium fizzled nearly 50%, amid the high market volatility this week. Asset light business model helps penetrating new geographies and keeps it capital efficient According to the Axis Securities report, the asset-light business model does not require Nureca to invest heavily in physical assets such as plant and machinery, land and property, which allows them to be capital efficient. The business model is scalable, such that they can expand their geographical reach and distribution capacity and add new products efficiently and at a relatively low cost without disrupting their existing business. The impressive financials According to Reliance Securities, “Nureca financials are quite encouraging.” While the company’s revenue recorded 122% CAGR over the past three fiscals, its net profit grew by 44% CAGR during the same period. <div type="image" title="Nureca&amp;#39;s financials" msid="80920950" hostid="261"></div> More importantly, the earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and profit became almost 5.7x in the second quarter ended September 30, compared to FY20 performance. Most of the product lines support India's home health market, making it a one-stop solution provider. Here’s why analysts believe ₹100 crore IPO of Dr Trust’s parent Nureca is a ‘sizeable’ opportunity

For well over a century, the US was known for its telecommunications prowess - first for the invention of the single-wire telegraph, and then for Alexander Graham Bell's invention of the modern-day telephone in the 1800s. Bell went on to found the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (known today as AT&amp;T), which became one of the world's largest telecommunications firms. But as 2020 draws near and the world is on the cusp of ultra-fast 5G networks, the US has found itself without a telecommunications hardware champion that can compete with major 5G players such as China's Huawei Technologies, Finland's Nokia and <keyword id="23050" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sweden">Sweden</keyword>'s Ericsson. The fifth-generation wireless networks are expected to revolutionise everything from the internet of things to autonomous driving and virtual reality, with billions of dollars in economic benefit brought to countries that are able to keep up with the technology. Instead, in recent years the US has clashed with China on trade and tech issues and moved to discourage other countries from using Huawei's 5G gear in their networks, in the hopes that the equipment can be supplied by companies from friendlier nations. The US has accused Huawei of ties to the Chinese government and warned allies that its equipment could be used for Chinese intelligence - claims that Huawei strenuously denies. Guo Ping, rotating chairman at Huawei, in turn recently taunted the US as a "sore loser" whose attempts to restrain Huawei were like "abandoning all table manners". Pressure from the US on its allies has mostly fallen on deaf ears - last month, the <keyword id="59149" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="European-Commission">European Commission</keyword> refused to ban Huawei outright, telling members that they were responsible for assessing network risks. But as the US continues its battle against Huawei, it is also anxious about keeping up in technology innovation. In February, the US Senate Commerce Committee held a hearing titled "Winning the Race to 5G and the Era of Technology Innovation in the United States", to discuss what policies are required to accelerate the deployment of 5G to keep America "competitive on the <keyword id="6356001" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="international">international</keyword> stage". <a href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/enterprises/article/3003876/huawei-challenges-competitors-subject-themselves-same-regulatory">Huawei challenges rivals to open their source codes for testing</a> "To realise all of these benefits fully, US must win the global race to 5G," said Roger Wicker, US senator and chairman of the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. "Failing to win the race in 5G ... will forever reduce the economic and societal gains from leading the world in technology." In the absence of a local 5G equipment champion, US telcos, including AT&amp;T, Verizon and Sprint have announced they will be working with Nokia and Ericsson and <keyword id="5565" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="South-Korea">South Korea</keyword>'s Samsung as their 5G suppliers. How exactly did the US go from being the leader of modern telephony to also-ran within a matter of decades, allowing a Chinese company to become the 5G leader today? Experts and former employees in the telecommunications industry in the US point to the confluence of several factors that ultimately led to the downfall of the US telecoms industry, including the lack of national mobile standards and deregulation of the industry in 1996. Europe had already mandated the use of the GSM mobile network standard in 1987. US regulators, however, allowed carriers to go with whatever mobile standard they preferred. US carriers Verizon and Sprint chose to offer services using the CDMA transmission standard, developed by US firm Motorola - which operates on different frequencies than GSM, which AT&amp;T and T-Mobile adopted. <a href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/gear/article/3003724/uk-chides-huawei-equipment-security-flaws-rules-out-chinese-state">UK chides Huawei for security flaws, but rules out Chinese state interference</a> Consumers who subscribed to a Verizon carrier, for example, would likely have to switch handsets if they wanted to change providers as a device configured for CDMA might not run on a network supporting GSM. "In the US there were wireless networks like TDMA, CDMA and GSM, and any carrier could choose any of those if they thought that it would be best for their own growth plan ... the US was like the Wild West," said Thomas J. Lauria, a former AT&amp;T employee, telecoms analyst as well as the author of the book The Fall of Telecom. "Europe managed itself more contiguously than the US, they did not have a lot of disparate networks and picked the [GSM] standard that everyone had to agree to." The existence of multiple transmissions standards in one market was further encouraged by the deregulation of the US industry under the Telecommunications Act of 1996, in which the US opened up the market, removing the monopoly that AT&amp;T had on phone services and allowing smaller carriers to sprout. The entry of multiple service providers, all of whom were free to adopt different standards, was at the beginning viewed as beneficial for consumers and the industry as a whole. AT&amp;T spun off its equipment division into what became known as Lucent Technologies, which thereafter listed on the New York Stock Exchange and raised US$3 billion in its initial public offering - then the largest ever in American history. Lucent's revenues grew rapidly by providing new entrants with networking equipment, and initially offered a variety of products compatible with different transmission standards, including CDMA, TDMA, GSM and AMPS. But multiple standards also meant that it was difficult to achieve economies of scale, so Lucent eventually bet on CDMA and UMTS (as opposed to WCDMA, which was adopted by much of the rest of the world) - neither of which took off in Europe and most of Asia, costing it expansion opportunities in international markets. <a href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/gear/article/3004307/us-braces-future-5g-world-largely-built-mobile-network-gear-chinas-huawei">US braces for 5G world largely built with gear from China's Huawei</a> "The US vendors were not convinced that GSM would become a global standard," said Bengt Nordstrom, chief executive of Stockholm-based consultancy Northstream. "Instead, they supported all the technical standards in the US for their customers there. In many aspects, the era from the early 1990s to mid 2000s was lost time for the US mobile industry." "From a US perspective and mentality, it is hard to understand why a technology not coming from the US should be better," he added. After the initial boom in the mobile industry following deregulation, the telecommunications industry began to decline from 2001 as growth started to plateau for both large and small mobile carriers. Investors also decided to bet on more established companies after some stock market uncertainty, and some smaller carriers went bust. For equipment providers like Lucent and Motorola, which had provided financing to some customers to buy equipment - a common industry practice - the slowdown hit hard. Some carriers were unable to make repayments on time, adversely impacting balance sheets on both sides. In one case, Lucent had to write off US$700 million in bad debts after providing US$2 billion in financing to WinStar Wireless, which went bankrupt in 2001. <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/china/diplomacy/article/3004348/jacinda-ardern-makes-progress-china-does-huawei-have-cause">Ardern makes progress in China, but does Huawei have cause for optimism?</a> Lucent was also brought down by a string of mergers and acquisitions that it did not successfully integrate into the business. Eventually, the US company merged with France's Alcatel to become Alcatel-Lucent in 2006. A decade later, Nokia acquired Alcatel-Lucent and merged it into its Nokia Networks division. Motorola, which like Lucent was once a major US network equipment maker, eventually also had its wireless network infrastructure assets acquired by Nokia. It was around the same time that Huawei, then a scrappy upstart based out of Shenzhen, was able to expand globally, initially offering its networking equipment at cheaper prices to international customers in emerging countries as a way to gain a foothold outside China. By focusing on customer service and investing heavily in research and development, Huawei has today established itself as one of the major equipment providers for 5G. To be sure, the US still has a major telecommunications firm - <keyword id="102187" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cisco-Systems">Cisco Systems</keyword>, with sales of US$49.3 billion in 2018 compared to US$100 billion for Huawei, which includes sales of its own brand smartphones. <a href="https://www.scmp.com/comment/insight-opinion/article/3004083/supporters-huawei-should-make-real-case-against-us-and-us">How supporters of China and Huawei are barking up the wrong tree</a> However, most of Cisco's sales come from providing infrastructure platforms for enterprise customers, whereas Huawei, Nokia and Ericsson provide equipment for core telecommunications networks. "I look back on it with sadness, that we had these great, large manufacturers and now I can't even find them on the map," said Lauria, the telecoms analyst who had worked for AT&amp;T. "It's sad, as an American, looking at it and thinking, 'What happened to our industry?'" "We created it, we built it, and we exported it - now people aren't really focused on the innovation that we did. Instead they remember us for our downfall." Its CGM systems send real-time glucose readings to compatible smart devices every five minutes to keep patients, their physicians, and their loved ones informed of their glucose levels.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right no-rightrail"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>The company is also <a href="https://intelligence.businessinsider.com/post/baidu-opens-self-driving-tech-to-other-companies-2017-4">partnering</a> with Alphabet's life sciences unit, Verily, iterate on its existing technologies bring new RPM products to market. Its main products include an implantable sensor, a removable and rechargeable smart transmitter, and a smartphone app for real-time diabetes monitoring and management.A<a href="https://mhealthintelligence.com/news/fda-approves-implantable-mhealth-sensor-for-diabetes-care-management">ccording</a> to mHealthIntelligence, Senseonics earned the first-ever US Food and Drug Administration approval for a monitoring system that uses an implantable sensor to track blood sugar levels. Designed as a complete solution for affordable telehealth and remote patient monitoring capabilities, the OnePulse smartwatch transmits users' health data to the cloud, where clinicians, patients, and caregivers can monitor user status in real time. Its connected devices include weight scales, glucometers, blood pressure monitors, and pulse oximeters.Information from MCMS' RPM platforms can be accessed on its NetResponse interactive web- and app-based health system, which integrates with smartphones, tablets, or personal computers to encourage patients to play an active role in their health. Patients can log in at any time, answer a series of questions, and submit their data to a healthcare provider for review and recommendation. Resideo's connected solutions include healthcare-focused offerings from Life Care Solutions.Resideo offers a line of RPM devices for vital signs collection and voice-enabled, disease-specific symptom management for patients with chronic diseases including hypertension, COPD, CHF, and diabetes. ResMed has also made a recent push into digital therapeutics to strengthen its connected health play.
