Starting in 2002, she worked in Epstein's office building on Manhattan's Upper East Side. One of Epstein's private pilots said she worked as a personal assistant for both Epstein and Maxwell.She scheduled flights on Epstein's private jets and arranged for his victims to be on them, witnesses said. Kellen also arranged "massages" — up to three a day — where Epstein would rape his victims, witnesses testified. One of the victims in the trial, Carolyn, testified that on at least one occasion, Kellen took nude photos of her before a <a href="https://www.insider.com/ghislaine-maxwell-accuser-says-18-was-too-old-for-epstein-2021-12">sexualized massage appointment with Epstein</a> that she was paid hundreds of dollars for.Kellen's name came up again in court on Tuesday, during a hearing where US District Judge Alison Nathan <a href="https://www.insider.com/ghislaine-maxwell-sentenced-20-years-prison-sex-trafficking-jeffrey-epstein-2022-6">sentenced Maxwell to 20 years in prison</a>.In discussing the scope of Maxwell's role in Epstein's sex-trafficking scheme, Nathan identified Kellen as "a knowing participant in the criminal conspiracy" and said she was "a criminally responsible participant.""The defendant was Epstein's No. 2 and the lady of the house," Nathan said, referring to Maxwell. "At some point, Kellen took over some of the defendant's duties. In 2019, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/29/nyregion/jeffrey-epstein-ghislaine-maxwell.html">The New York Times reported</a> that prosecutors were considering charges against her.<h2>Kellen has said she was a victim</h2>In an interview <a href="https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/13395859/ghislaine-maxwell-jeffrey-epstein-sarah-kellen-lieutenant/">with The Sun in 2020</a>, Kellen described herself as a "victim" of Epstein who was "raped and abused weekly."But at a discussion at the Tuesday hearing about how to apply sentencing guidelines for Maxwell, Assistant US Attorney Alison Moe said Kellen's involvement working for her and Epstein illustrated the criminal conspiracy's scope."When you look at the defendant's role in earlier years, she was doing things like calling victims and arranging for massage appointments," Moe said. "As the scheme shifted, they brought in another member of the scheme beneath them in the structure and hierarchy of the scheme. The defendant remained a close associate. She was often traveling with them, often traveling with Kellen together. So as Kellen took on some of the tasks that were then delegated to a lower member of the conspiracy, the defendant was higher up in the leadership structure."Kellen could not be reached for comment.She was named in the <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/6184602-Jeffrey-Epstein-non-prosecution-agreement.html">infamous non-prosecution agreement Epstein made</a> with federal prosecutors in Florida in 2007, where he pleaded guilty to state-level prostitution charges. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Following <keyword id="12069583" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ghislaine-maxwell" source="Orion">Ghislaine Maxwell</keyword>'s conviction, accusers said they hoped more Epstein associates would be brought to justice.</li><li>But prosecutors won't charge <keyword id="11957148" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jeffrey-epstein" source="Orion">Jeffrey Epstein</keyword>'s associate <keyword id="12745199" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lesley-groff" source="Orion">Lesley Groff</keyword>, her lawyers told Insider.</li></ul>Federal prosecutors have no plans to bring charges against Lesley Groff, an associate of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein who was reportedly under criminal investigation for sex trafficking, according to her attorneys.Groff's lawyers, Michael Bachner and Jon Whitcomb, said Thursday in a statement provided to Insider that prosecutors in Manhattan would not file an indictment against their client."After a more than two-year investigation by the Department of Justice into Jeffrey Epstein's conduct, which included lengthy interviews of witnesses and a thorough review of relevant communications, we have been informed that no criminal charges will be brought against Lesley Groff," Bachner and Whitcomb said.The attorneys added that Groff "never witnessed anything improper or illegal."<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/29/nyregion/jeffrey-epstein-ghislaine-maxwell.html">The New York Times first reported in 2019</a> that federal prosecutors were considering sex-trafficking charges against Groff, who worked as an executive assistant for Epstein for nearly 20 years. A spokesperson for Groff told Insider that she was cooperating in the investigation.Groff was one of four Epstein employees named in <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/6184602-Jeffrey-Epstein-non-prosecution-agreement.html">a non-prosecution agreement</a> the financier signed with federal prosecutors in Florida in 2007. The agreement, which has been widely criticized, allowed Epstein to serve a lenient sentence in Palm Beach County jail in Florida on prostitution solicitation charges rather than face a federal sex-trafficking indictment. The document also said that federal prosecutors would not bring criminal charges against Groff and the other women, who it described as "potential co-conspirators."Federal agents arrested Epstein in August 2019 following <a href="https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/article238237729.html">an investigation from Miami Herald reporter Julie K. Brown</a> that exposed the scope of the agreement. He died in his jail cell while awaiting trial. In 2020, the FBI arrested Ghislaine Maxwell on suspicion of sex-trafficking girls to Epstein and sexually abusing them herself.Prior to her conviction, Maxwell argued that the same non-prosecution agreement protected her from all federal prosecution. Maria Farmer, whose sister Annie Farmer testified against Maxwell at the trial, told Insider that while her family was "elated by the verdict," the case was "only the tip of the iceberg.""As thrilled as I am by this arrest, it is only the tip of the iceberg," she said. "There should be many to follow."Virginia Giuffre, who has also accused Epstein, Maxwell, and other associates of sexual misconduct, also said Wednesday that other people in their orbit must face justice."I hope that today is not the end but rather another step in justice being served," she said. "Maxwell did not act alone. Others must be held accountable. I have faith that they will be."<div type="image" title="ghislaine maxwell trial" height="2268" width="3024" msid="88602338" hostid="261"></div>Groff's name came up several times in Maxwell's trial. One woman, <a href="https://www.insider.com/woman-testifies-ghislaine-maxwell-jeffrey-epstein-befriended-her-as-teen-2021-12">who testified under the pseudonym "Kate" and said Epstein sexually abused her for years</a>, said that Groff was one of Epstein's office assistants who booked flights for her to travel to his residences in New York, Palm Beach, and the US Virgin Islands. Larry Visoski and David Rodgers, two of Epstein's longtime private jet pilots, both said Groff was a secretary who worked for Epstein in the 1990s and 2000s, and who scheduled flights for Epstein.According to her attorneys, Groff's job included "making appointments for Epstein as directed by him, taking his messages, and setting up high-level meetings with CEOs, business executives, scientists, politicians, celebrities, charitable organizations, and universities."In <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/05/business/working-for-top-bosses-on-wall-st-has-its-perks.html">a 2005 interview with the New York Times</a>, Groff described herself as an extension of Epstein's brain."It comes down to the bond," she told the Times. "I know what he is thinking and I know when I need to be fast. It's a nice roll we are on."In the same article, Epstein described Groff as so valuable that, when she became pregnant in 2004, he paid for a full-time nanny and brought her a Mercedes-Benz so that she could keep working for him."There is no way that I could lose Lesley to motherhood," Epstein told the Times.<h2>Epstein victims accused Groff of facilitating sexual abuse</h2>Civil lawsuits filed against Groff, all of which have since been dropped, depict her as one of Epstein's enablers.One lawsuit, <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysd.568030/gov.uscourts.nysd.568030.1.0.pdf">filed in October by an anonymous "Jane Doe,"</a> alleged Groff "facilitated Epstein's trafficking and sexual abuse of Jane, including by purchasing plane tickets, sending money, making appointments, and sending various communications." The suit, also filed against the executors of Epstein's estate, says Epstein sexually abused Jane in New York, France, the US Virgin Islands, and Florida between 2017 and 2019, up until Epstein was arrested. Groff also paid Jane cash after sexual encounters, the lawsuit alleges.Jane and Groff <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysd.568030/gov.uscourts.nysd.568030.39.0.pdf">jointly agreed</a> to voluntarily dismiss the lawsuit with respect to Groff on Wednesday night, shortly after the verdict against Maxwell. The lawsuit is still pending with respect to the executors of Epstein's estate over the late financier's alleged misconduct.<div type="image" title="Jeffrey Epstein Ghislaine Maxwell" height="1025" width="1367" msid="88602341" hostid="261"></div>An attorney for Jane didn't immediately respond Thursday to Insider's request for comment. Bachner and Whitcomb said they were "not surprised" the case was dropped."Our hearts truly break for any person victimized by Epstein but the truth is — Lesley had no knowledge of and no participation in any of the illegal conduct alleged in the lawsuit," the attorneys said in a statement.At least two other accusers, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/29/nyregion/jeffrey-epstein-ghislaine-maxwell.html">Sarah Ransome</a> and <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/21161287-429326141-jennifer-araoz-s-amended-complaint">Jennifer Araoz</a>, previously brought civil lawsuits against Groff. Both women dropped their litigation once they accepted money from the Epstein Victims' Compensation Program, which was established by Epstein's estate after his death to pay compensation to his victims. But <a href="https://www.insider.com/jeffrey-epstein-victims-compensation-program-accusers-cant-sue-ghislaine-maxwell-2021-12">as Insider previously reported</a>, the program required claimants to abandon civil claims against the estate and Epstein's former employees, including Groff and Maxwell.Groff denied wrongdoing in Ransome and Araoz's lawsuits as well. <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/21161287-429326141-jennifer-araoz-s-amended-complaint">Araoz's lawsuit</a> had accused Groff of scheduling "massages" with Epstein, who sexually abused Araoz on those encounters."Participation in the Victims' Compensation Program requires permanent discontinuance of all legal actions against former employees of Jeffrey Epstein, including Ms. Groff," Araoz's attorney, Eric Lerner, <a href="https://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/ny-epstein-victim-groff-lawsuit-20201202-g6dpollubvatrgxrtcblko2vaq-story.html">told the New York Daily News at the time</a>. "My client maintains the truth and veracity of all of the allegations in her pleadings."

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11957148" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="jeffrey-epstein" source="Orion">Jeffrey Epstein</keyword> accusers who took money from a compensation fund set up by his estate can't sue <keyword id="12069583" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ghislaine-maxwell" source="Orion">Ghislaine Maxwell</keyword>.</li><li>A release form obtained by Insider shows Epstein's associates are protected from future lawsuits.</li></ul>Earlier this year, around 150 women <a href="https://www.insider.com/jeffrey-epstein-victims-fund-awards-125-million-to-claimants-2021-8">accusing Jeffrey Epstein of sexual abuse accepted money</a> from a victims' compensation fund.The disgraced financier killed himself in a Manhattan jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges. For his accusers, the $125 million distributed from the Epstein Victims' Compensation Program gave a sense of closure that the criminal justice system couldn't.In accepting money from the program, the accusers had to sign <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/21154458-epstein-vcp-release-updated-6192020">a release form, a copy of which has been obtained by Insider</a>.The language in the release required the women to drop any existing lawsuits against Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's longtime associate who multiple women have accused of sexually abusing them and of trafficking them to Epstein. The release also forbids accusers who accepted compensation from ever filing a lawsuit against Maxwell in the future.For some accusers, being locked out of civil litigation against Maxwell has raised the stakes of <a href="https://www.insider.com/ghislaine-maxwell-trial-sex-trafficking-charges-jeffrey-epstein-connection-explained-2021-11">the ongoing criminal case against her</a>. Maxwell is currently standing trial in Manhattan federal court for allegedly grooming and trafficking girls to Epstein, and sexually abusing some of them herself. She's pleaded not guilty to the charges.<keyword id="12745200" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="david-boies" source="Orion">David Boies</keyword> represents 14 Epstein accusers, including one of the four women listed as victims in the indictment against Maxwell. Boies told Insider that the protection Epstein's estate granted to Maxwell spoiled the hopes of some of his clients who'd sought money from the compensation program."The inability to hold Maxwell civilly accountable — it's frustrating," he said. "I think that has, in the survivors' minds, made accountability through the criminal process even more important."<h2>Accusers could 'carve out' people they wanted to sue, but not Maxwell</h2>Faced with a barrage of civil litigation, the executors of Epstein's estate, Darren Indyke and Richard Kahn, created the compensation program in order to handle each accuser's claims more quickly.The program, which ran between June 2020 and August 2021, worked to the benefit of accusers, too. Indyke and Kahn invited input from accusers' attorneys, hoping they'd ultimately choose to go through the compensation program rather than continue filing lawsuits against the Epstein estate.The program was overseen by Jordana Feldman, who'd worked on the September 11th Victims Compensation Fund. Feldman's team included people who'd worked on compensation programs for victims of the Holocaust and sexual abuse within the Catholic Church.The release form <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/21154459-epstein_vcp_-_final_protocol_-_5292020">was the only element of the compensation program out of Feldman's control</a>. The release's main objective was to prevent anyone who accepted compensation from suing Epstein's estate, and it was worded to protect not only Indyke and Kahn, but also anyone who has ever been "employed by, worked in any capacity for, or provided any services to Mr. Epstein, the Epstein Entities or the Epstein Estate." The release form covers an expansive range of conduct, in a timespan ranging "from the beginning of the world" to the present.In addition to being Epstein's girlfriend for a time, <a href="https://www.insider.com/ghislaine-maxwell-jeffrey-epstein-relationship-is-overblown-brother-says-2021-10">Maxwell worked for Epstein</a> as a household manager and occasional helicopter pilot. Bank records entered into evidence at Maxwell's criminal trial <a href="https://www.insider.com/jeffrey-epstein-gave-ghislaine-maxwell-millions-records-show-2021-12">revealed Epstein wired her more than $30 million between 1999 and 2007</a>.The release did permit accusers to carve out anyone they still wanted to sue. <a href="https://www.insider.com/virginia-giuffre-lawsuit-led-to-criminal-case-ghislaine-maxwell-epstein-2021-11">Boies' client Virginia Giuffre</a>, for example, reserved the right to sue <keyword id="11928261" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="prince-andrew" source="Orion">Prince Andrew</keyword>. On August 9, the same day the Epstein compensation program ended, Giuffre <a href="https://www.insider.com/virginia-roberts-guiffre-lawsuit-prince-andrew-sexual-assault-accusations-2021-8">filed a lawsuit against the royal,</a> accusing him of sexually assaulting her at Epstein's residences when she was 17. Prince Andrew has <a href="https://www.insider.com/virginia-roberts-sexual-assault-claims-prince-andrew-timeline-2021-8">denied any wrongdoing</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/attorneys-for-prince-andrew-want-a-sexual-assault-lawsuit-tossed-2021-10">moved to dismiss the lawsuit</a>.But in order to carve out someone from the release, accusers had to get permission from Indyke and Kahn. And they refused to exempt Maxwell."We tried, but we were told we could not carve out Maxwell," Boies told Insider.Boies said that Indyke and Kahn also refused to carve out <keyword id="12745198" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sarah-kellen" source="Orion">Sarah Kellen</keyword> or <keyword id="12745199" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lesley-groff" source="Orion">Lesley Groff</keyword>, <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2021/05/14/jeffrey-epstein-investigation-women-487157">two former assistants of Epstein's who some of his accusers have alleged facilitated sexual abuse</a>. Both Kellen and Groff have denied wrongdoing.The release had no effect on litigation that had already been completed, like the settlement Giuffre previously reached with Maxwell in 2017 after <a href="https://www.insider.com/virginia-giuffre-lawsuit-led-to-criminal-case-ghislaine-maxwell-epstein-2021-11">suing for defamation</a>.<div type="image" title="Ghislaine Maxwell Jeffrey Epstein" height="1025" width="1366" msid="88307080" hostid="261"></div>Daniel Weiner, an attorney for Indyke and Kahn, told Insider that the the language shielding Maxwell was necessary to include in the release in order to finalize everyone's claims. In a lawsuit filed in the US Virgin Islands, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/18/business/jeffrey-epstein-ghislaine-maxwell-lawsuit.html">Maxwell said Epstein and Indyke promised to cover her legal costs</a>, including in the federal criminal case against her. The estate's executors have moved to dismiss Maxwell's lawsuit, but it's not clear if a judge will ultimately accept their argument.Weiner told Insider that if Epstein's estate hadn't shielded Maxwell from accusers' lawsuits, the estate would've been dragged into endless litigation."It would make no sense for the Estate — and would be inconsistent with the Co-Executors' fiduciary duties to the Estate, including its creditors and remaining claimants — to pay out over $120 million in awards under the Epstein Victims' Compensation Program, and then risk being dragged back into litigation when someone who provided services to Mr. Epstein got sued and then impleaded the Estate, alleging that he or she was acting at his direction," Weiner said.Epstein had offered legal protections to his employees before. In <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/6184602-Jeffrey-Epstein-non-prosecution-agreement.html">a non-prosecution agreement</a> with federal prosecutors in Florida in 2007, Epstein pleaded guilty to state-level prostitution charges. She accused them of luring her into a sex-trafficking operation, and said Epstein raped her for years, up until his 2019 arrest. There are a number of other civil lawsuits ongoing against the estate, including <a href="https://www.insider.com/jeffrey-epstein-ghislaine-maxwell-threatened-accuser-alligators-2021-3">one from a woman who alleged Epstein threatened to feed her to alligators</a> if she told anyone about him sexually abusing her."While Ms. Maxwell will have to answer for her own conduct, both in her criminal trial and in any civil action brought against her, the Estate did not include her among those who could be excluded from the release executed by those claimants who elected to receive an award under the EVCP," Weiner told Insider, using an abbreviation for the Epstein Victims' Compensation Program. The release didn't prevent any accusers from cooperating with prosecutors conducting criminal investigations into Maxwell, either.All four of the accusers in Maxwell's trial accepted money from the compensation fund. Maxwell's attorneys subpoenaed the fund, and her attorney, Bobbi C. Sternheim, told jurors in opening statements that the accusers all received between $1.5 million and $3.25 million from the program.In cross-examining the accusers, Maxwell's lawyers have suggested that the women somehow stand to make more money from the compensation fund, even though it has already ended. Woody Allen, his wife Soon-Yi Previn, and Bill Gates advisor Boris Nikolic were also scheduled to be present, according to the email.Insider obtained the scheduling emails between Groff and Epstein through an information request to the office of the Attorney General of the US Virgin Islands. A compensation program created by his estate <a href="https://www.insider.com/inside-jeffrey-epstein-victims-compensation-program-fund-2022-1">identified about 150 victims overall</a>.Cavett's Twitter account doesn't show any statements about Epstein. The scheduling emails from Groff are the first publicly known indication that the two may have interacted.Nikolic had numerous scheduled meetings with Epstein between 2012 and 2015, the email records show. At the time, Epstein was working with JP Morgan to set up a charitable investment fund that would be seeded with Gates's money. The plan never came to fruition. Kellen, who also goes by Sarah Kensington or Sarah Vickers, has reportedly been accused of training and scheduling girls to give Epstein massages."She saw herself as the boss," Spencer T. Kuvin, a West Palm Beach lawyer who represented several accusers in lawsuits, told The Times. "Sarah was really running that organization, bringing girls and getting them in and out of the Palm Beach home."Groff and Ross were two of Epstein's former assistants. Do we need their testimony? Are they going to accept the deal that we're willing to offer them to testify against Maxwell?" Weinstein said.And though Maxwell has previously been accused in multiple lawsuits, affidavits, and court filings of recruiting and even sexually abusing victims, prosecutors will need corroboration like other witnesses or physical evidence to prove their accusations."They're going to have to prove that she was a knowing, intentional participant in a conspiracy to traffic underage minors as sex slaves.
