Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that India is moving towards becoming a leader in <keyword id="6319489" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="6g-technology" source="Orion">6G technology</keyword>, adding that the future is here and now. <keyword id="2238662" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="pm-modi" source="Orion">PM Modi</keyword> said this while inaugurating the <keyword id="4254251" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Mobile-Congress" source="Orion">Indian Mobile Congress</keyword> (IMC). "We are not only expanding 5G in the country but also moving in the direction of becoming leaders in the area of <keyword id="7268171" type="General" weightage="70" keywordseo="6g" source="Orion">6G</keyword> technology. Everyone knows what happened during the 2G (referring to the spectrum allocation scam during the UPA regime). During our government, 4G was expanded but there was no stain on us. I am confident that India will lead the world in 6G technology," he said. The Prime Minister added that whether it is telecom, technology, or connectivity or whether it is 6G, AI, cybersecurity, semiconductors, drones or space sector, the future is going to be very different. "Within a year of the launch of 5G, nearly four lakh 5G base stations have been working today. They are covering 97% of the cities and more than 80% of the population," Modi said. Speaking further, PM Modi said that the world is using 'Made in India' phones while referring to the transformation which has taken in the recent past in the telecom sector. "Recently, Google has announced the manufacturing of its Pixel phone in India. Samsung's Fold 5 mobile phone and Apple's iPhone 15 are being manufactured in India. We are proud that the world is using Made in India mobile phones now," PM Modi said. India has become an exporter from a net importer, he added. "India has reached 43rd position in mobile broadband speed from the previous rank of 118," PM Modi said, adding that 2014 (when NDA came to power) is not a date, it is 'badlav' (change). Referring to various measures of the government, the Prime Minister said that access to capital, access to resources and access to technology is the government's priority. During the programme, PM Modi awarded 100 '5G Use Case Labs' to educational institutions across the country.

The government may find it difficult to let go of revenue, especially from for-profit private companies, at a time when the pandemic has stretched its finances. It may be a tough call to offer sops to other billionaires like Mukesh Ambani (net worth estimated at $90.2 billion by Forbes and Sunil Bharti Mittal (estimated net worth $12.9 billion), in a bid to provide relief to Birla’s firm. But letting Vodafone Idea die will turn Indian telecom into a duopoly, or a two player market, which may lead to an unpopular rise in the cost of services at a time when the government wants internet and digital technologies to be more widely accessible and adopted by people at large. As Chandrashekhar put it, “it's a difficult problem at the outset, but the solution requires not only a brilliant plan or a design, but it requires a taker”.  A day before Vodafone Idea posted India’s largest ever quarterly net loss of ₹50,000 crore, its stock had crashed 20%. The stock which has been taking a beating ever since Supreme Court gave a verdict which went against them in the aggregate gross revenue case, it has little to lose after yesterday’s loss announcement. The market capitalisation of Vodafone-Idea was just about ₹8,476 crore ($1.2 billion) before trading opened on Friday (November 15). That is barely a tenth of the ₹₹44,150 crore that it owed Department of Telecommunications which it has to pay p in three months. "We have accounted for the estimated liability of Rs 27,610 crore related to licence fee and Rs 16,540 crore billion related to spectrum usage charges up to September 30, 2019, including the interest, penalty and interest thereon of Rs 33,010 crore," the company said on a filing on the stock exchanges. Added to that, the British parent of the company Vodafone Plc also went deep into red because of its flailing India business. Two days back, the CEO of the parent Nick Read said that India business might be liquidated if the government does not offer any relief over the spectrum dues. In late October, both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have lost a decade old case on the definition of AGR dues. While the telecom companies had claimed that the definition should not include non-telecom earnings, DoT said it should. Supreme Court also agreed with DoT leading the sector into a fresh crisis, amongst the many it is battling. Vodafone-Idea is now a ₹3 stock after a shocking quarterly loss

Post the merger of Vodafone and Idea, Birla owns a 27% stake in the telco, while Vodafone Plc., owns a 44% stake. At the current market capitalisation of around ₹24,000 crore, Birla’s stake is worth ₹6,500 crore. The shares of Vodafone Idea had gained a little over a percent at 1:50 p.m on August 2 (Monday). The stock has lost over a quarter of its value since the start of the year. <div type="image" title="Vodafone Idea 01_07_21 to 02_08_21." msid="84969304" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Vodafone Idea share price over the last one month&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> In a letter to the Union Cabinet Secretary, Rajiv Gauba, Birla reportedly <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/telecom/telecom-news/kumar-mangalam-birla-willing-to-give-up-stake-in-voda-idea-for-telcos-survival/articleshow/84968401.cms">said</a> he is willing to give up his stake in Vodafone Idea to any state-owned or a domestic financial entity, provided the entity wants to continue operations of Vodafone Idea as a going concern. “It is with a sense of duty towards 27 crore Indians connected by VIL, I am more than willing to hand over my stake in the company to any entity-public sector/government/domestic financial entity or any other that the government may consider worthy of keeping the company as a going concern,” Birla said in his letter. Going concern refers to a business that has the assets to meet financial obligations when they fall due. Vodafone Idea is currently saddled with a debt of ₹1.8 lakh crore, a third of which is due to deferred spectrum license fee, and levy on recalculated revenue from the past to include income from non-telecom operations. Earlier last month, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/vodafone-idea-and-airtel-shares-fall-as-sc-rejects-agr-dues-re-computation-appeal/articleshow/84668288.cms">Supreme Court refused</a> to give the telco a discount on its retrospective dues, which amount to over ₹50,000 crore. This, combined with deferred spectrum dues of ₹8,292 crore means the company needs funds right now – even though <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/markets/news/cost-cutting-is-not-helping-vodafone-idea-fresh-funds-might-but-nothing-is-coming/articleshow/84092610.cms">nothing seems to be coming</a>. Back in September 2020, Vodafone Idea’s board had <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/voda-ideas-rs-25000-cr-fund-raise-set-to-be-done-in-2-3-months/articleshow/78964068.cms?from=mdr">announced</a> plans to raise up to ₹25,000 crore through debt and equity. Nearly a year later, the plans are yet to yield any results. The lack of government support seems to be keeping investors at bay, which is something that Birla touched upon in his letter. “To actively participate in the fund raising, the potential foreign investors want to see clear government intent to have a three-player telecom market (consistent with its public stance) through positive actions on long-standing requests such as clarity on AGR liability, adequate moratorium on spectrum payments and most importantly, a floor pricing regime above the cost of service,” he said. “In the absence of definitive steps in this regard, the potential investors have understandable hesitation to invest,” he added further. The government is also considering, according to reports, a slew of long-term measures to help the telecom sector. It may be willing to rewrite the rules to exclude ‘non-telecom’ revenue from the licence agreements, and allow telcos to surrender unused spectrum for a small penalty. However, it will not affect Vodafone Idea’s present dues and the current financial health. The last word on the issue is yet to be spoken. Kumar Mangalam Birla says markets are too euphoric and the economists are too pessimistic

Bharti Airtel on Friday announced the closure of its agreement with Reliance Jio Infocomm to transfer the 'Right to Use' of Airtel's 800 MHz spectrum in three circles to the Mukesh Ambani-led firm. Airtel said in a statement it has received Rs 1,004.8 crore (net of tax) from Jio for the proposed transfer. Besides this, Jio will assume future liabilities of Rs 469.3 crore relating to the spectrum, the statement added. In a late evening statement, Jio said: "With this trading of right to use spectrum, RJIL will have 800 MHz band spectrum footprint of 2 x 15MHz in Mumbai circle and 2 x 10 MHz each in Andhra Pradesh and Delhi circles, thereby further enhancing network experience of its customers." Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (RJIL) said it has paid total consideration of Rs 1,183.3 crore (inclusive of taxes) to Bharti Airtel and has assumed deferred payment liability with net present value of Rs 469.3 crore. Jio's pact with Airtel to buy the spectrum in 800 MHz band was announced in April this year and marked the first such deal between the two telecom giants. Airwaves come in different bands which support different propagation characteristics for the transmission of voice and data. For instance, lower bands like 800 MHz and 900 MHz support good indoor coverage while higher bands like 2300 MHz have a good carrying capacity. The airwaves are also sold in quantities measured as MHz. Spectrum auctions, held earlier this year, had raked in winning bids of over Rs 77,800 crore for 855.6 MHz of spectrum. Billionaire <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>'s Reliance Jio spent the most in the auction, picking up 488.35 MHz spectrum in bands such as 800 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2300 MHz for over Rs 57,100 crore. In the auction, Bharti Airtel won the right to use spectrum, the total value of which is about Rs 18,700 crore. There were no takers for spectrum in 700 MHz and 2500 MHz bands in the last auctions. As per latest data available from telecom regulator Trai, the Indian telecom market had presented a picture of sharp contrast in May with Bharti Airtel losing a staggering 46.13 lakh wireless subscribers even as rival Reliance Jio added 35.54 lakh mobile users. Overall, the Indian mobile market shed 62.7 lakh users in May. In fact, both Airtel and Vodafone Idea had suffered massive subscriber losses in the month. Airtel lost 46.13 lakh mobile users and ended the month with a subscriber base of 34.8 crore. Vodafone Idea -- which is currently in the grip of an existential crisis -- had seen its mobile subscriber base shrink by 42.8 lakh users in May, to 27.7 crore users.  The mobile service provider posted a loss for the third quarter in a row, losing ₹1,035 crore in the three months ending December 2019. In fact this was the first time in five quarters, the company saw a small rise in subscriber base to 283 million.
