The paper titled 'Income and Wealth Inequality in India, 1922-2023: The Rise of the Billionaire Raj' said between 2014-15 and 2022-23, the rise of top-end inequality has been particularly pronounced in terms of wealth concentration. The paper authored by <keyword id="21027543" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="thomas-piketty" source="keywords">Thomas Piketty</keyword> (<keyword id="21028261" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paris-school-of-economics-and-world-inequality-lab" source="keywords">Paris School of Economics and World Inequality Lab</keyword>), <keyword id="21028259" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lucas-chancel" source="keywords">Lucas Chancel</keyword> (Harvard Kennedy School and <keyword id="21028262" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-inequality-lab" source="keywords">World Inequality Lab</keyword>) and Nitin <keyword id="21028260" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kumar-bharti" source="keywords">Kumar Bharti</keyword> (New York University and World Inequality Lab). "Between 2014-15 and 2022-23, the rise of top-end inequality has been particularly pronounced in terms of wealth concentration. "By 2022-23, top 1 per cent income and wealth shares (22.6 per cent and 40.1 per cent) are at their highest historical levels and India's top 1 per cent income share is among the very highest in the world, higher than even South Africa, Brazil, and the US," the paper said. According to the paper, the Indian income tax system might be regressive when viewed from the lens of net wealth. "A restructuring of the tax code to account for both income and wealth, and broad-based public investments in health, education and nutrition are needed to enable the average Indian, and not just the elites, to meaningfully benefit from the ongoing wave of globalisation," it noted. As per the paper, besides serving as a tool to fight inequality, a "super tax" of 2 per cent on the net wealth of the 167 wealthiest families in 2022-23 would yield 0.5 per cent of national income in revenues and create valuable fiscal space to facilitate such investments. The paper said the quality of economic data in India is notably poor and has seen a decline recently. It said India's top 1 per cent population's income share appears to be among the highest in the world "behind only perhaps Peru, Yemen and a couple of other small countries". "In terms of top wealth shares, we see that both with top 10 per cent and top 1 per cent, India comes out in the middle of the pack, with Brazil, and South Africa standing out with their extreme wealth concentration levels (85.6 per cent and 79.7 per cent top 10 per cent shares, respectively)," the paper said.

"India has reached 43rd position in mobile broadband speed from the previous rank of 118," PM Modi said, adding that 2014 (when NDA came to power) is not a date, it is 'badlav' (change). Referring to various measures of the government, the Prime Minister said that access to capital, access to resources and access to technology is the government's priority. Bharti Airtel on Friday announced the closure of its agreement with Reliance Jio Infocomm to transfer the 'Right to Use' of Airtel's 800 MHz spectrum in three circles to the Mukesh Ambani-led firm. Airtel said in a statement it has received Rs 1,004.8 crore (net of tax) from Jio for the proposed transfer. Besides this, Jio will assume future liabilities of Rs 469.3 crore relating to the spectrum, the statement added. In a late evening statement, Jio said: "With this trading of right to use spectrum, RJIL will have 800 MHz band spectrum footprint of 2 x 15MHz in Mumbai circle and 2 x 10 MHz each in Andhra Pradesh and Delhi circles, thereby further enhancing network experience of its customers." Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (RJIL) said it has paid total consideration of Rs 1,183.3 crore (inclusive of taxes) to Bharti Airtel and has assumed deferred payment liability with net present value of Rs 469.3 crore. Jio's pact with Airtel to buy the spectrum in 800 MHz band was announced in April this year and marked the first such deal between the two telecom giants. Airwaves come in different bands which support different propagation characteristics for the transmission of voice and data. For instance, lower bands like 800 MHz and 900 MHz support good indoor coverage while higher bands like 2300 MHz have a good carrying capacity. The airwaves are also sold in quantities measured as MHz. Spectrum auctions, held earlier this year, had raked in winning bids of over Rs 77,800 crore for 855.6 MHz of spectrum. Billionaire <keyword id="3820" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>'s Reliance Jio spent the most in the auction, picking up 488.35 MHz spectrum in bands such as 800 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2300 MHz for over Rs 57,100 crore. In the auction, Bharti Airtel won the right to use spectrum, the total value of which is about Rs 18,700 crore. For <keyword id="1553175" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vodafone-Idea">Vodafone Idea</keyword>, the value of spectrum bought in auctions was pegged at Rs 1,993.4 crore. There were no takers for spectrum in 700 MHz and 2500 MHz bands in the last auctions. As per latest data available from telecom regulator Trai, the Indian telecom market had presented a picture of sharp contrast in May with Bharti Airtel losing a staggering 46.13 lakh wireless subscribers even as rival Reliance Jio added 35.54 lakh mobile users. Overall, the Indian mobile market shed 62.7 lakh users in May. In fact, both Airtel and Vodafone Idea had suffered massive subscriber losses in the month. Airtel lost 46.13 lakh mobile users and ended the month with a subscriber base of 34.8 crore. Vodafone Idea -- which is currently in the grip of an existential crisis -- had seen its mobile subscriber base shrink by 42.8 lakh users in May, to 27.7 crore users. Bharti Airtel picks up a 25% stake in Bengaluru-based tech startup Lavelle Networks

Vodafone Idea Ltd, the India's third largest mobile service provider, will shutdown if the government does not provide relief on the liability it faces in past statutory dues following a Supreme Court order, its billionaire chairman <keyword id="6354955" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kumar-Mangalam-Birla">Kumar Mangalam Birla</keyword> said on Friday. 
"If we we are not getting anything then I think it is end of story for Vodafone Idea," Birla said at the HT Leadership Summit when asked about the future of Vodafone Idea in absence of a government relief on payment of Rs 53,038 crore dues.
 Birla's <keyword id="6354924" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="idea-cellular">Idea Cellular</keyword> and British telecom giant Vodafone plc's India unit had merged last year to compete with the onslaught of free voice calling and dirt cheap data unleashed by richest Indian Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio. In the process, it accumulated Rs 1.17 lakh crore debt and had just weeks back posted corporate India's biggest loss after it provisioned for the liability arising from the Supreme Court upholding the government's position on what base should statutory liabilities be calculated.
 "It does not make sense to put good money after bad. That would be end of story for us. We will shut shop," he said in a response when asked if Vodafone Idea will put in more money.
 Market leader <keyword id="6354287" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="bharti-airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword>, Vodafone Idea and other telecom players have to pay as much as Rs 1.47 lakh crore in payment of telecom license fee and spectrum usage charge together with interest and penalty for past 14 years. Both Airtel and Vodafone Idea have petitioned the government for relief in waiver of interest and penalty, which will halve the dues, and also filed a review petition in the Supreme Court.
 Birla was however hopeful of a relief from the government not just for the telecom sector but the industry as a whole to pull out the economy from a six-year low GDP growth of 4.5 per cent.
 "They (the government) have realised the fact that this (telecom) is a very critical sector. The whole digital india programme rests on this. This is a strategic sector," he said.
 The government, he said, has publicly stated that it wants three players from the private sector and one player from the public sector.
 "I think that we can expect much more stimulus from the government because it is required for the sector to survive. If we weren't getting anything then I think it is end of story for Vodafone Idea," he said.
 The government had late last month deferred by two years the payment due to telecom companies for spectrum they bought in past auctions. This relief totalled Rs 44,000 crore for the industry but companies are expected to pay this due together with interest after the two year moratorium.
 Asked about the specific relief sought, Birla said, "The big elephant in the room is AGR. Which is actually I think something which lies in the court of judiciary. I believe government can have a dialogue. This was a suit filed by the government against telecom service providers."
 AGR refers to adjusted gross revenues, a percentage of which the telecom companies pay as statutory dues. The Supreme Court had upheld the government position that non-telecom revenues have to be included in the AGR for calculating dues.
 "Since the government has won, it gives them headroom to talk to judiciary and try to find some of solution. I don't know which form or shape it takes," he added. PRS ANZ MKJ

 Bharti Land Ltd, the development and management arm of Bharti Realty, has partnered with Asthetic Township Developers for a new mixed-use commercial project, comprising 6 lakh sq ft area of office and retail spaces.
 "We at Bharti Realty are excited about our association with Asthetic Township Developers Pvt Ltd on this new project in Sector 27 which will set a new benchmark in the commercial development segment in Gurugram," Bharti Realty MD &amp; CEO S K Sayal said.
 The project is located centrally between IFFCO Chowk and Huda metro stations, amid the residential hub and current business districts of Gurugram.
 The construction of this project is expected to start within the next two months.
 Bharti Realty did not disclose the project cost but sources said the investment on developing this project could be around Rs 350 crore, excluding land cost.

 With residential property market facing multi-year slowdown, real estate developers are focusing on development of commercial real estate, particularly Grade-A premium office space which is in huge demand from corporates as well as co-working operators. The introduction of real estate investments trusts (REITs) has also given a fillip to the commercial property market, which is attracting huge investments from global and domestic institutional funds.
 According to reports of various global property consultants, office space leasing across major cities stood at an all-time high in 2019.
 Incorporated in 2003, Bharti Realty Ltd is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Bharti Enterprises. It aims to provide world-class developments in marquee locations. The company's offerings include a diversified product mix comprising commercial, retail and mixed-use developments.
 Bharti Realty has a portfolio of over 5 million sq ft of Grade-A commercial real estate space. Some of the developments include Bharti Crescent, New Delhi; Airtel Centre, Gurugram; and Worldmark, New Delhi. It already has 2-3 properties in Delhi's Aerocity, named 'Worldmark Aerocity', comprising fully-leased 1.5 million sq ft area.
 The company is currently developing another 9 million sq ft residential, retail and mixed-use real estate space in Delhi NCR.
 Bharti Realty-led consortium has bagged a commercial project from Delhi airport operator Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL).
 DIAL, majority-owned by GMR group, operates the Indira Gandhi International Airport in the national capital.
 Bharti Realty has been awarded the "right to design, develop, finance, construct, operate, manage and maintain a commercial development project at Gateway and Downtown Districts of Aerocity", DIAL had said last year.
 The Bharti Group has presence in telecom, agri-business, financial services, retail and real estate among others. MJH HRS
