About seven in 10 (71 per cent) professionals in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> are confident about keeping their jobs in 2023 despite the rough macroeconomic conditions and global layoffs, a report showed on Monday. There is a stark difference in the confidence levels of freshers and entry-level professionals and the ones with more than six years of experience. While 63 per cent of professionals with 0-3 years of experience are confident about retaining their job, this number jumps up to 83 per cent for professionals with more than six years of experience, according to the report by edtech company <keyword id="6559242" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="great-learning" source="Orion">Great Learning</keyword>. "With a tighter job market in 2023, skill development will be as critical as ever. The increase in intent to upskill in 2023 among professionals is expected given how rapidly technology and business practices are evolving," said <keyword id="7634970" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="hari-krishnan-nair" source="Orion">Hari Krishnan Nair</keyword>, Co-Founder of Great Learning. In 2022, 79 per cent of professionals were planning to upskill, while in 2023, that number has risen to 83 per cent. The highest proportion of the workforce, who plan to upskill, are from <keyword id="16486077" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="it/tech" source="Orion">IT/Tech</keyword> and <keyword id="6356925" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bfsi" source="Orion">BFSI</keyword> sectors, followed by education/training, manufacturing, and the automobile industry. Indians are primarily looking to upskill in software development, data science and analytics, <keyword id="50691" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="digital" source="Orion">digital</keyword> marketing, management, and <keyword id="7161942" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ai/ml" source="Orion">AI/ML</keyword> domains, said the report. "In 2023, the primary motivation for Indians to upskill is career growth within their current organisation. This is followed by personal interest and the expectation of new job opportunities as a result of upgraded skills," it added. In general, more male professionals enrolled in upskilling programs in 2022, but the gap in representation becomes more pronounced at higher levels of work experience. This is even lower than the general industry trend for female representation at senior positions, the report mentioned. 71% Indian professionals confident to retain jobs in 2023 despite global layoffs

With an aim to build the world's largest customer data platform (CDP), Bharti <keyword id="15491" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="airtel" source="Orion">Airtel</keyword> on Tuesday said it has acquired a strategic stake in Lemnisk (Immensitas Private Limited) under its 'Start Up Accelerator Programme for an undisclosed sum. Bengaluru-based Lemnisk offers real-time marketing automation and secure CDP, capable of providing 1-to-1 personalisation and cross-channel customer journeys at a scale that increases conversions, retention, and growth for enterprises. "Lemnisk's real-time marketing automation engine is a natural fit for us, where over 350 million customers interact with brands daily through multiple touch points," said Adarsh Nair, CEO of Airtel <keyword id="50691" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="digital" source="Orion">Digital</keyword>. They will work together to build the world's largest CDP platform across Airtel's digital businesses including ad tech (Airtel Ads), digital entertainment (Wynk Music and Airtel Xstream) and digital marketplace (Airtel Thanks App). In future, Airtel plans to offer this service to its enterprise customers through Airtel IQ, which is the network-integrated <keyword id="1057264" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="cloud-platform" source="Orion">Cloud Platform</keyword> as a Service (CPaaS). The platform will offer enterprises an opportunity to create a nimble, scalable, and omnichannel engagement for its customers said the company. Airtel acquires strategic stake in Lemnisk to build largest customer data platform

<keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, the poster child of the Indian startup ecosystem, was devalued for the seventh time in January 2017, by <keyword id="4205639" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="fidelity-partners">Fidelity Partners</keyword>. At a $5.56 billion valuation, Flipkart’s shares were valued at $52.13 in November 2016, down by 36.1 percent from $81.55 per share as of August 2016. The domino effect hit the cab aggregator <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> next with the US-based investment firm <keyword id="4205636" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="vanguard-world-fund">Vanguard World Fund</keyword> marking down Ola by over 40 percent. 
 According to their regulatory filing with the <keyword id="108474" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-Securities-and-Exchange-Commission">US Securities and Exchange Commission</keyword>, the current valuation for Ola is now $3 billion, with its shares dropping from $311.27 per share in the previous quarter to $182.70 apiece. During their peak, Ola had raised $500 million at a valuation of $5 billion. 
 That’s not all. According to reports, e-commerce giant <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> is reportedly looking at raising funds at a lower valuation of $4 billion. At their last fundraising round, they raised $200 million at a valuation of $6.5 billion. 
 
Valuations are normally decided according to a company’s market share, its gross margins, and its rate of growth, among other factors, but is anyone talking about the elephant in the room? Does a number decide a company’s worth or does the mettle lie someplace else? 
 
What’s The Big Deal about Valuations? 
 
While Valuations and devaluations are part of the game, they are a mix of market environment, risk appetite, a fund manager’s biases, hot new trends, fear of missing out, the multiples comparable are commanding, and of course, expected cash flows and margins. 
In 2015, we lauded the entry of Flipkart, Ola and Snapdeal in the Unicorn club. The first quarter of 2015 saw over $1.7 billion funding in start-ups and all we hear now are downturns with reality hitting the magic creatures to the ground and forcing them to compete in a horse race for fund-raising.

While there were muffled concerns of profitability and unit economics, the dynamics took a harder turn when in the middle of 2016 the world economic dynamics shifted. 
 
Suddenly, the pouring funding started slowing down, news of firing rounds, internal tiffs, and investor involvement began to cloud the startup skyline. 
 
Now the lauded valuations started to seem bloated and overhyped, and the cost-cutting started and it doesn’t seem to end. 
 
 
 
 
The secret is in the Business Model 
 <keyword id="824043" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Business-Insider">Business Insider</keyword>, while digging deeper into factors ailing the startup ecosystem in India, realized that business models had to be one of the core ingredients to a startup’s success or failure. So, we got in touch with key players, notable investors and successful companies that had a say in the functions of the industry. 
 
What clearly emerged was that there were mainly three business models that most start-ups and unicorns, followed in India- 
 
1) Cut prices to gain industry share and chase profit later 
2) Set up person-to-person exchanges 
3) On-Demand Model 
 
Now we break down the models to see why Indian start-ups think they’d work and why they haven’t succeeded yet. 
 
Investors’ Point of View 
 <keyword id="262067" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahesh-Murthy">Mahesh Murthy</keyword>, Co-Partner, Seedfund, one of India’s most vocal investors told us what’s wrong with the Indian startup ecosystem,”The problem is that we are idolizing businesses that are not ‘New’. There is nothing elusive or different about the companies we look up to, they are just copycats.’’ 
 Seedfund, which is an early stage VC firm has invested in companies like Redbus.in, Chumbak, Carwale, and Voonik. “Real businesses need little or no marketing. The cost of acquiring a customer shouldn’t be higher than your investment in your product which is what is happening right now’’<keyword id="20148" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="murthy">Murthy</keyword> comments on the viability of the business models of India’s best-known <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword>. 
 “Innovation for the sake of innovation is useless. Most consumers prefer the companies that are competitors to Flipkart, Snapdeal, and Ola and that speaks volumes. We are just looking for great service coupled with great value for money and <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> and Uber give us that while the other companies don’t hit the mark while getting celebrity endorsements with full-page ads.’’ 
 “Rule Number 1 of business: Never lose money. Rule Number 2: Don’t forget Rule Number 1,” said <keyword id="71133" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Warren-Buffet">Warren Buffet</keyword>, probably the most popular investor in the world. 
 <keyword id="542474" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reid-Hoffman">Reid Hoffman</keyword> from <keyword id="28120" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Linkedin">LinkedIn</keyword> and now a VC says that as a VC, you should be able to put your money into a startup and walk away from your investment and at the most, you are best placed to understand a sector if you have built a business in it or at the very least, worked in it. For Indian start-ups, we see the opposite happening with Flipkart who recently appointed <keyword id="6379357" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kalyan-Krishnamurthy">Kalyan Krishnamurthy</keyword> as CEO, who is an ex-employee at Flipkart’s key investor, Tiger Global. 
 
What is a business model? 
 
A business model explains which consumer pain a startup chooses to relieve, why your solution works better than competing ones and how big a wedge a company can drive between what customers are willing to pay and the costs. 
 
Breaking down the Business Models 
 
There are broadly the following business models at play when it comes to start-ups that hold the public eye in India: 
 
1. Cut prices to gain an industry share and chase profit later: Target a huge market and sell a product at the lowest price with fast delivery and great service. As the company grows, expand the product line, negotiate volume discounts with suppliers, invest in technology, customer response time and cut waste from the operations. Then deliver the lower costs to customers in the form of lower prices. 
 
This was Amazon’s model which is still one of the fastest growing companies in India and the world. Although it was founded back in 1994, Amazon didn’t actually make a profit until 2001. Amazon has some profitable projects, but the money made from them is typically used as investments to fund other Amazon businesses and ventures. The company invests its profits in new lines of businesses and uses them to expand. In short, Amazon seems to value growth over profits. 
 
 
 
​ <keyword id="8589" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="padmaja">Padmaja</keyword> <keyword id="980938" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ruparel">Ruparel</keyword>, President, Indian Angel Network doesn’t believe in this model simply because she thinks that Indian consumers are flighty, “There is a constant need to lure the consumer to stick with you which is tricky when you’re not the only player in the market. Your focus here is on how quickly you can grow the market and not on your business strategy.’’ Ruparel believes in investing in a much more stable business model, “We are old-fashioned for sure as our focus is on businesses building a top-line and a bottom-line. We ascertain a business by unit economics and even though the cycle might be slightly longer, B2B start-ups create a sustainable business.” 
 
“The consumer is surely attuned to buying online which was their aim, but only some players will remain in this market. Consolidation is inevitable as loss-making businesses can’t stay afloat for long, but only time will tell who will remain the top dogs here,’’says Padmaja when asked about the future for consumer-centric start-ups. 
 
India’s perspective: “E-commerce companies like Snapdeal and Flipkart are following a similar model to that of Amazon in India. The difference is that Amazon can afford to lose money in India as it is profitable in other markets. The former players are just playing in India where they’re losing money trying to compete with Amazon,” comments Mahesh Murthy. 
 
2. Set up person-to-person exchanges: A house owner in a town has a huge house that has idle rooms that aren’t occupied. The young professionals living in the city need accommodation in different towns to work flexibly but they don’t want to own a house or live in expensive hotels. It seems to be working for <keyword id="719382" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airbnb">Airbnb</keyword> which doesn’t own any inventory and millions of people have taken advantage of these services, and Airbnb now has a market value estimated at $30 billion—roughly the same size as the <keyword id="183920" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Marriott-International">Marriott International</keyword> hotel chain. 
 
Vikram Gupta, CEO, IvyCap Ventures, “India is not a mature market where you can write off $100 million checks to companies that are spearheaded by college graduates or in some cases, dropouts. The entire ecosystem is disturbed as new companies were getting funding at overhyped valuations. The market has started to finally stabilize and we see investors going back to the revenue as a yardstick for company’s growth instead of the GMV. The businesses are coming back to realistic valuations and while they might have money left in the bank, they are looking to reduce their cash burn rate.” 
 
 
 
India’s perspective: Companies like <keyword id="2808667" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="OYO">OYO</keyword> are trying to work with small hotels and guesthouses and have even leased their own properties but the burn-rate is consistent. With simplifying its business model and focusing on one aspect; people sharing their homes with people and minimal revamping, Airbnb has revolutionized how the world sees hotel accommodation forever. 
 
3. On-Demand Model: Smartphones have driven transformational shifts in how we consume goods and services, and many consumers have become acclimated to purchasing at the press of a button. The on-demand model allows a startup to leverage new technology while utilizing existing infrastructures. Another benefit lies in the use of freelance labor with its obvious advantages in cost cutting. 
 
Uber is a great example of the sharing economy where they connect the supply to the demand of taxis without investing in their own fleet. 
 
India’s perspective: <keyword id="6362049" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola-Cabs">Ola Cabs</keyword> is Uber’s biggest competitor in India and while both companies burn a lot of money trying to lure customers to get into a taxi, Uber is currently the world’s most valuable startup at $69 billion.

 V. Krishnan, Co-founder, and Director of <keyword id="1675768" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Justdial-Ltd">JustDial Ltd</keyword> who likes to call his company an ‘18-year old startup’ says that for a successful business you don’t need an extraordinary idea, “The problem with start-ups today is that they don’t focus on profitability. To create a profitable business, you need extraordinary execution, not an idea. Giving money to people to use your services doesn’t make sense. The Indian customers are not loyal to brands, but to offers. Our goal was to create a world-class business and a world-class company.’’ 
 
For the first ten years of JustDial’s existence, the company didn’t raise any funding. The company ran on a shoe-string budget and used its own money to survive. In 2006, when internet penetration and broadband gained traction in India, the company was ready with its fully functional website to complement its telecom services. From 2-3% internet users to now 85% internet users, the company has grown to 200 Cr web searches annually, without any cashback or incentives. The company is probably one of the rarely profitable internet companies in the country today.

“The core business of start-ups isn’t ready but there is marketing happening. India is going to be giving you a lot of opportunities. Everyone wants to create a company, raise a great valuation and sell it off to do something bigger; the attitude is wrong," he signs off.

While popular Indian start-ups struggle to survive without additional funding coming in, we see some internet companies like JustDial and BookMyShow staying afloat, without investor-intervention. 
 
When it comes to businesses and business models, investors and successful companies agree that the tried and tested works; build a business with a strong product that you can alter as technology develops. The business of losing money can only take you so far if you don’t put it to good use. 
 
There’s a difference between investment into a product and burning money, and the start-ups better realize that before they get acquired or relinquished by the players who created the game that they’re set to lose. 
 
The market is big enough for companies that create value for customers not just for start-ups that create customers; the difference is everything.

Uber’s aren’t working for Indian startups

We had announced our state's EV policy about a month ago and it is encouraging to see the active participation from all fronts to bring this goal into being. Today's Power Bank EV charging hub inauguration is one of the many steps that we as a government will take for the greater good of our planet." The charging hub will be maintained and operated by Shuchi Anant Virya's brand Power Bank. It is estimated that more than 2000 vehicles, monthly, will avail the facility installed in one of the busiest business centres in Mumbai Its close proximity to IndiaBulls Finance Centre will also aid in driving usage of the hub. The Indian Premier League (IPL) or popularly called ‘India ka tyohar’ has begun with the expected pomp and show. Substantiating his point, he asserted that the scam has hardly an impact on the game’s image. “Now when you say marred, there are more people, more viewership and more money in the game. So, where is the mar here?” averred Krishnan. 
 
Krishnan reaffirmed that the IPL controversy that happened in 2013, did not impact the sport enthusiast. He clarified that people still love the game and everything it stands for. “It brings more people to the game and the game is on an upward trajectory. I agree match-fixing is not good for the game but at present, the game is bigger than anything else,” he stated. 
 It is worth noting that in 2013, IPL was embroiled in a controversy when three players from Rajasthan Royals- <keyword id="13418" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="S-Sreesanth">S Sreesanth</keyword>, <keyword id="219674" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ankeet-Chavan">Ankeet Chavan</keyword> and <keyword id="1050075" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ajit-Chandila">Ajit Chandila</keyword>, were arrested for spot fixing. Jitendra was Amarendra’s batchmate at NIT-K and worked with Philips and Cisco for a span of 7 years. Earlier, he had worked with Philips and another start-up called Prysm Inc. 
 
What inspired the venture: The zeal to spread the digital revolution. Both Amarendra and Jitendra come from Orissa. But nothing seems to have changed in that state over the past 10 years in spite of the digital revolution around the globe. “Internet could be empowering but only when it reaches people in a way they can use and benefit from it,” observes Amarendra. “But we saw three main obstacles to mass Internet adoption – affordability, accessibility and ease of use. Hence we thought of provisioning some digital content on TV, so that millions of homes can access it on their existing <keyword id="388204" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="television-sets">television sets</keyword> without spending a single penny and without learning how to use a PC. As long as you know how to operate a <keyword id="722747" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="TV-remote">TV remote</keyword>, you are good to go,” he adds. 
 
What’s the pitch: BrizzTV is a ‘first screen’ company that has pioneered next-generation TV viewing. It puts all relevant social buzz alongside the TV programmes on the same screen – so that you won’t require any other <keyword id="1939016" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Companion-device">companion device</keyword>. 
 
How it works: The digi-media technology firm is catering to the B2C segment upfront and it’s just click-and-go for everyday users. However, the real business lies in exploring the B2B segment. For Twitter on TV, the company only needs to tie up with <keyword id="454021" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="dth-service-providers">DTH service providers</keyword> and it will reach their customers in no time. “We don’t require broadcast partners since the service is user-invoked,” explains Amarendra. 
 
Once the tie-up is in place and BrizzTV installs its system, it works in three steps. The firm curates interesting tweets about TV programmes from the Web (based on majority algorithm). Then these tweets are made broadcast-able in a TV network. On the TV side, it overlays these tweets received via broadcast with the TV programmes on viewer opt-in (you can do that by pressing the green button on your remote). 
 Since tweets are converted to broadcast-able format, <keyword id="756327" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="TV-sets">TV sets</keyword> or set-top boxes need not be connected to the Internet for receiving the tweets. “That’s how we are available on all 8.5 million set-top boxes that <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> has in India,” clarifies Amarendra. 
 The market size for Twitter on TV will be the entire country, according to the founders. The start-up is also targeting a chunk of the print ad pie in India, estimated at over $4 billion, by bringing display ads directly to TV via digital platforms. In a way, that’s creating a new market – <keyword id="1939000" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Digital-ads-on-TV">digital ads on TV</keyword>. The firm has already tied up with <keyword id="279704" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Airtel-DTH">Airtel DTH</keyword> for all its products in a bid to reach millions of homes across India. 
 
Claim to fame: BrizzTV claims to be the first company to bring contextual tweets directly to a broadcast TV network and that too, in real time. It is also the first company to introduce permission advertising/freemium advertising for pay TV. But the founders believe that the real claim to fame lies in throwing open a market that would get bigger every day. “Imagine our reach with Twitter on TV – 8.5 million homes (over 30 million individuals assuming 4 per family) with just one <keyword id="1840316" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="DTH-operator">DTH operator</keyword>. And it’s on six premium channels for at least 2 hours every day. That kind of reach isn’t available even at large destination websites in India. Our reach and time with users are an unparalleled opportunity,” says Amarendra. 
 
Show me the money: Currently, its revenue model is a mix of <keyword id="1939012" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Product-subscription">product subscription</keyword> (for iExam) and advertisement earnings from Twitter on TV and Freemium Movies. BrizzTV is yet to sell ads on Twitter on TV but for Freemium Movies, it has on-boarded some big clients such as ITC, Nestle and Maruti. However, the company has not reached break-even yet and continues to burn cash on R&amp;D and technology development. 
 The start-up raised an undisclosed amount in Series A from <keyword id="226299" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ojas-Venture-Partners">Ojas Venture Partners</keyword> back in 2011. Prior to that, it had raised a debt grant of Rs 25 lakh from <keyword id="1939005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nadathur-S-Raghavan-Center">Nadathur S. Raghavan Center</keyword> for Entrepreneurial Learning or <keyword id="226294" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="NSRCEL">NSRCEL</keyword> (a joint set-up of IIM Bangalore and the <keyword id="6623307" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Department-of-Information-Technology">Department of Information Technology</keyword>) where it was incubated. 
 
Biggest challenge: Striking new partnerships with TV service providers. “Until we are able to do that, <keyword id="6354632" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Social-media">social media</keyword> can’t invade every home or occupy the first screen,” feels Amarendra. According to him, BrizzTV’s key competitors will be middleware companies like Cisco, Nagravision and Irdeto. The start-up also anticipates competition from destination websites and smart TV/device players as they try to grab the attention of TV viewers.

​The growing proficiency of Indian technology companies in building innovative products is drawing a great deal of attention from global corporations eager to acquire fresh ideas and skilled workers. 
 
Applications that help ease online payments, offer security for data stored on multiple devices as well as those that help drive greater advertising revenue on mobile devices are some of the technologies on the shopping list of multinationals scouting for the right startup. In the next five years, experts say at least 40 technology ventures in India could be bought over by large corporations. 
 “Couple of them (startups) will be valued at over $1 billion (Rs 6,200 crore),” said Ravi Gururaj, an angel investor who heads the software product council at industry lobby <keyword id="6372077" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nasscom">Nasscom</keyword>. He expects about half a dozen technology ventures to be valued at around $500 million (Rs 3,100 crore) while <keyword id="818790" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="the-rest">the rest</keyword> will likely fetch a price of between $15 million (Rs 93 crore) and $50 million (Rs 311 crore). 
 A handful of such acquisitions has already set the ball rolling. Last November, Japanese engineering and electronics maker <keyword id="69870" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Hitachi">Hitachi</keyword> acquired Prizm Payment Services, in a deal estimated at $250 million (Rs 1,547 crore). In mid 2013, South African media conglomerate Naspers bought online bus ticketing firm red-Bus for about $100 million (Rs 618 crore), giving it access to not only the large <keyword id="47445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indian-market">Indian market</keyword> but disruptive technology as well. 
 “Multinational companies primarily look for talent and <keyword id="388837" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="intellectual-property">intellectual property</keyword> that can compete at global level,” said Prashant Gupta, group manager at Microsoft India (R&amp;D). “There are early signs in India that such companies are emerging that can meet these demands, especially in cloud-driven application lifecycle and big data,” he said. 
 
The global software maker runs an accelerator programme in India for technology startups that has graduated 22 ventures so far and is poised to make its first venture investment this year. 
 Interest from <keyword id="6355311" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Japan">Japan</keyword>ese corporations too is growing. Apart from the Hitachi deal, others such as NTT too have been active buyers. In 2012 Japan’s <keyword id="913532" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="NTT-Communications">NTT Communications</keyword> bought a majority stake in technology firm <keyword id="423557" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Netmagic">Netmagic</keyword> for about Rs 900 crore. “India is becoming the laboratory for products and services for the world,” said Krishnan Ganesh, <keyword id="36740" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="founder">founder</keyword> of online tutoring company TutorVista that was bought by the UK’s <keyword id="152222" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Pearson">Pearson</keyword> group at an enterprise value of about Rs 1,000 crore. 
 
After the acquisition, the number of students using the services of TutorVista has tripled to four million across both the local and the US market. Pearson now aims to replicate the TutorVista model in emerging markets such as Brazil, China and South Africa. 
 
In 2013, there were 100 merger and acquisition deals across the India’s information technology industry. Of this, 31 whose value was announced were worth $1,906 million (Rs 11,807 crore), according to research firm Venture Intelligence. 
 The trigger for this growing M&amp;A activity is the range of disruptive technology startups emerging out of India. Companies such as advertising network InMobi, data analytics company Mu Sigma and online retailer <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> have achieved a scale where they are valued at over $1 billion. “This is driven by leading-edge globally competitive technologies,” said Naren Gupta cofounder and managing director of Nexus Venture Partners, an early investor in Netmagic and online retailer <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>. 
 For instance, Pune-based <keyword id="741520" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Druva">Druva</keyword> provides data security and retrieval software to customers such as US space agency <keyword id="6360409" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="NASA">Nasa</keyword>, drug maker <keyword id="44612" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Pfizer">Pfizer</keyword> and fashion brand <keyword id="5940" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Louis-Vuitton">Louis Vuitton</keyword>.

	&#xa0;</div> In Chennai, Perfint Healthcare has developed robots that treat cancer by precisely inserting a needle in the affected area to burn or freeze a patient’s tumour, leaving the good tissue alone. The founders, all former employees of <keyword id="166456" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="GE-Healthcare">GE Healthcare</keyword>, quit to launch the firm when they realised the demand for such a product. For global corporations acquiring such game-changing technologies can help them enter new markets and raise barriers against competition. 
 Two years ago, when global software maker <keyword id="183292" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Red-Hat">Red Hat</keyword> bought Bangalore-based <keyword id="6373689" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Cloud-computing">cloud computing</keyword> startup <keyword id="724826" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Gluster">Gluster</keyword> for around Rs 667 crore, it acquired a storage platform technology which it offered to its customers for the first time. The cost of technology infrastructure to set up such ventures and scale them up for acquisitions has also come down drastically. 
 “A bunch of guys can now launch an application from a garage, keep the tablet or a mobile phone as the front end and the product becomes viral in few weeks,” said Anand Babu Periasamy, cofounder of Gluster. A computer <keyword id="6369183" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Engineer">engineer</keyword> graduate from <keyword id="119675" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="annamalai-university">Annamalai University</keyword>, Periasamy who now works at Red Hat is aiming to build Gluster into a billion dollar business unit. 
 
Experts hope small-size technology ventures in India will also attract the attention of larger firms. “Smaller exits are the life blood for healthy startup ecosystems like in <keyword id="6355882" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="israel">Israel</keyword> and US,” said Sharad Sharma co founder of software product think-tank iSpirt. Sharma is running an active M&amp;A Connect Program at iSpirt that is curating a list of several dozen companies. 
 Some of those on the radar are retail services software maker Capillary Technologies, healthcare applications provider <keyword id="1165142" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Practo">Practo</keyword> and security software maker <keyword id="171228" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Quick-Heal">Quick Heal</keyword>. According to Sharma, many of them have shown healthy growth traction and are attractive for strategic partnerships. 
 Sharma of iSpirt is of the view that a larger proportion of bootstrapped companies is stymieing merger activity in India. “It is harder for large corporations when there is no validation from <keyword id="6357097" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="venture-capital">venture capital</keyword> firms,” he said. 
 The other major problem say experts is that large Indian firms such as Infosys, <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword> and <keyword id="6357150" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="TCS">TCS</keyword> have shied away from making any such purchases, despite having huge cash reserves. Infosys has $4 billion (Rs 24,000 crore) cash reserves. 
 
“When Wipro can be in soaps and vegetable oil, why can’t they be in the Flipkarts of the world,” said Ganesh of TutorVista. “They are sitting on a huge cash reserve and not a fraction has been spent on startups. That mentality is not there.” 
 
“Over the next five years, I expect that quantity will dramatically improve and we can be optimistic about merger and acquisition activity out of India,” said Nasscom’s Gururaj.

Naukri pegs it as high as 27% with the EV sector being the star. “According to the Global Green Skills Report 2023 by LinkedIn, India has seen a 140% jump in auto industry workers with Electric Vehicle(EV) skills from 2018-23. Krishnan says that the rapid industrial expansion outpaces curriculum updates in colleges, resulting in a shortage of skilled talent. Most of the expertise that’s needed to drive India’s green transformation requires strong foundational STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills. “Currently, the key qualifications needed for such (green) roles would be an engineering degree with 5-10 years’ experience within the sustainability sector and experience of sustainability certification schemes,” says Ghatpande. In fact, most of the jobs require engineering degrees — both standalone or specialised to environment science. “The common degrees are Environmental Science or Engineering for roles in environmental conservation and management. Renewable Energy Engineering or Sustainable Energy Studies for careers in the renewable energy sector. Agricultural Science or Sustainable Agriculture for those interested in sustainable farming practices,” says Jaideep P Kewalramani, head of employability business and COO, TeamLease EdTech. Green certifications in vogue On top of the basic degrees, there are certifications as well. Green Building Certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for sustainable construction and architecture. Certifications in Environmental Management like ISO 14001, for professionals focusing on sustainability within organisations. For now, organisations which quickly need a lot of employees with green skills are developing talent by upskilling and reskilling the existing workforce on green technologies. “Also there is an active collaboration with academia in curating programs to create talent pipelines,” says Kumar. Added to that several online learning platforms offer tailored certificate courses and modules to help professionals kickstart their careers in the EV industry. “These courses often feature industry-relevant curricula, real-world projects, live mentorship by experts, and expert-led masterclasses,” says Krishnan. India’s green jobs are growing but are colleges ready to supply the talent?

For 84 per cent professionals in the country, <keyword id="294572" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Machine-learning" source="Orion">machine learning</keyword> (ML) followed by <keyword id="66017" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="statistics" source="Orion">statistics</keyword> are the two most in-demand skills that recruiters are looking for in data science professionals, a report said on Tuesday. <keyword id="61204" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="python" source="Orion">Python</keyword> remains the most used programming language across all sectors and MS Excel, Tableau and <keyword id="2431547" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="power-bi" source="Orion">Power BI</keyword> are the top three visualisation tools used by data science professionals, according to the report by <keyword id="6559242" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="great-learning" source="Orion">Great Learning</keyword>, a <keyword id="2900267" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="byju" source="Orion">BYJU</keyword>'s group company. "For professionals looking to thrive in a digital-driven future, setting a foundation for the right data science skills needs to start now to weather the changes that are to come," said Hari Krishnan Nair, Co-founder, Great Learning. This domain has impacted the way companies and businesses function and professionals who upskill in this field have a chance to become prime candidates in lucrative industries, he added. Two out of three professionals with zero-three years of experience said recruiters consider data visualisation as a "must-have skill". Three in four data science professionals with less than three years of work experience engage in upskilling weekly, while more than 50 per cent professionals in the three-six years bracket upskill weekly. Professionals with 6-10 years of experience prefer to upgrade their skills quarterly, the report mentioned. Sector-wise, professionals in retail, Consumer packaged goods (CPG) and e-commerce are more inclined to learn cloud technologies as a new skill. Of the host of programming languages, 90 per cent data science professionals use Python as their choice for statistical modeling, the report noted. New Delhi, Dec 10 () CDC Group, the UK's development finance institution, on Tuesday said it has closed a USD 36 million (over Rs 255 crore) in equity investment in Ecom Express.
Warburg Pincus-backed Ecom Express is a tech-enabled Indian logistics company.
"In addition to network expansion and augmentation, CDC's equity injection enables Ecom Express to significantly accelerate job creation from about 32,000 employees to about 47,000 within the next 1-2 years," a statement said.
This will be complemented by a distinct focus on increasing the number of employed women in the workforce, bringing further diversity, it added.
The fund, as part of the initiatives, will work with Ecom Express to transit a proportion of its distribution fleet to electric vehicles and sponsor a road safety programme for its drivers and fleet operators, the statement said.
Srini Nagarajan, Managing Director and Head of Asia, CDC, said the company is "dedicated to responsibly investing our capital in India, with over USD 1.7 billion currently committed to local businesses".
"We have the same amount again to invest over the next few years and look forward to working with many more businesses that are as environmentally and socially conscious as Ecom Express," he added.
TA Krishnan, co-founder and CEO of Ecom Express, said the capital infusion will help the company further expand its delivery footprint in connecting towns and rural centres across the country.
"Besides expanding reach, the company plans to invest in technology, deploy advanced parcel sortation systems, strengthen network reliability and infrastructure, and finally, make development impact with job creation, environmentally responsible initiatives and gender diversity," he added.
Headquartered in Gurugram, Ecom Express was incorporated in 2012 by Krishnan, Manju Dhawan, K Satyanarayana and Sanjeev Saxena. It operates in over 2,400 towns across more than 25,000 PIN-codes in India. SR BAL
