The hot temperature if persists in March may not only reduce the wheat crop yield but also heat up the commodity prices, said <keyword id="6359483" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="crisil" source="Orion">CRISIL</keyword>. The rabi wheat crop yield will be impacted if the temperature is high in March. The crop yield will be on a par - or marginally lesser - than last year's low, said CRISIL in a report. According to the report, in <keyword id="6357713" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="uttar-pradesh" source="Orion">Uttar Pradesh</keyword>, accounting for about 30 per cent of <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s wheat production, the eastern part is expected to have relatively good yields on-year because of timely sowing after harvest of <keyword id="50318" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kharif" source="Orion">Kharif</keyword> paddy. On the other hand, western Uttar Pradesh could see a marginal decline due to late sowing - majorly in the sugarcane belt - if high temperatures persist in March. In Punjab and Haryana (together accounting for about 25 per cent of India's wheat production), late-sown wheat is in the flowering stage, while the early sown lot is in the milking stage. High temperatures are detrimental to grain formation in both these stages, CRISIL said. Similarly, in <keyword id="6355554" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="madhya-pradesh" source="Orion">Madhya Pradesh</keyword> (about 20 per cent of India's wheat production) late-sown wheat is at the milking stage. According to CRISIL, Bihar (about 5 per cent of India's wheat production) saw early sowing and the crop there is at the grain formation/maturation stage. Therefore, it could be impacted relatively less. Though such abiotic factors cannot be managed very effectively, farmers in Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh are said to have initiated spraying of crop nutrients such as bio-stimulants and specialty fertilisers, which should help them cope with the heat wave to some extent. "While wheat prices have been on a downward trend in the past 20 days, if these high temperatures persist for the next 20 days, there could be a turnaround in prices," CRISIL said. Hot temperature to heat up prices, reduce wheat yield: CRISIL

New Delhi, Apr 16 () The Union Agriculture Ministry on Thursday laid down the standard operating procedure (SOP) to guide farmers on safety precautions that need to be strictly followed during planting of kharif crops amid the threat of COVID-19 pandemic. Paddy is the main kharif (summer) crop, besides pulses, oilseeds and commercial crops like cotton and sugarcane. The sowing of kharif crops has already begun in some parts. "Transplanting of paddy and vegetables are labour-intensive activities. Hence, strictly follow guidelines on social distancing, sanitizing and wearing masks," as per the SOP released by the ministry during the national video conference on kharif crops. Farm workers should wash their hands, legs and face with soap when coming out of the field for meal or rest, it said. For preparing land for sowing of kharif crops, the ministry said farmers should minimise labour and use tractor driven machineries. Farmers should use seed-cum-fertiliser drills and reduce the number of workers in the field. As per the SOP, social distancing and sanitization norms should be followed during field preparation, sowing and fertiliser application. "Maintain social distance at least 1-2 metre during farm operations. Workers should be assigned separate duties with regard to farm activities," it said. "All farm equipment from seed drill, plough to tractor should be sanitized before use. Those working in the farm field should wear masks or cover their face with three layers of "chunnis, gamchha or towel," it added. Each worker should have a separate utensil and clean it with soap after use, it said. For other operations like weeding and spraying of fertilisers/pesticides, the ministry said farmers or workers must follow all protocols of social distancing and sanitize the equipment. "Burn or bury in soil empty packets of pesticides. Sun dry empty bags of seeds, fertilisers for two days for re-use," the ministry said. The ministry also mentioned that after the day's work, farmers should bath and wash clothes with soap and sundry. For harvesting of rabi crops, the ministry said farmers should prefer mechanised harvesting and threshing, and maintain 4-5 metres social distancing during harvesting, threshing, packaging, eating and resting. Farmers have been asked to keep farm produce in open, preferably under sun for 48 hours before storing. Agriculture and allied activities have been exempted from the lockdown imposed to prevent the spread of coronavirus. LUX RVK

The government on Tuesday hiked the minimum support price for wheat by Rs 110 to Rs 2,125 per quintal and mustard by Rs 400 to Rs 5,450 per quintal for the current crop year with an aim to boost production and income of the farmers. The decision to increase the MSPs (minimum support prices) was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (<keyword id="56977" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ccea" source="Orion">CCEA</keyword>) chaired by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword>. <keyword id="133827" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="msp" source="Orion">MSP</keyword> is the rate at which the government buys grain from farmers. Currently, the government fixes MSPs for 23 crops grown in both <keyword id="50318" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kharif" source="Orion">Kharif</keyword> and rabi seasons. Sowing of rabi (winter) crops begins in October, immediately after the harvest of kharif (summer) crops. Wheat and mustard are major rabi crops. Government hikes the minimum support price of wheat and mustard

New Delhi, Jul 8 () Area sown to Kharif crops like rice has shot up 88 per cent to 432.97 lakh hectare so far despite the COVID-19 crisis, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said on Wednesday. Sowing of Kharif (summer) crops begins with the onset of southwest monsoon from June. Rice is the main Kharif crop. "Kharif sowing is underway. This time, 432.97 lakh hectare has been covered, up by 202 lakh hectare when compared with the year-ago period," Tomar said in a media briefing. The sowing acreage has increased by 88 per cent so far and the planting is still continuing, he added. Tomar mentioned that India's agriculture has emerged stronger during the COVID-19 pandemic as the sector functioned smoothly while other sectors remained shut during the lockdown period. The estimated higher crop of 152 million tonne during the 2019 rabi season and increase in coverage under summer crops in the ongoing Kharif season shows the strength of the Indian agriculture sector, he added. Tomar also said three recent ordinances that aim to provide barrier-free trading platforms to farmers and Rs 1 lakh crore agri-infra fund will further strengthen the sector. Efforts are being made to provide Kisan Credit Cards to rest 2.5 crore farmers. Already, 6.35 crore farmers have been covered, he added. According to Agriculture Ministry's latest data, area sown to rice rose to 68.08 lakh hectare till last week, up from 49.23 lakh hectare in the same period during 2019. The area under pulses also increased substantially to 36.82 lakh hectare from 9.46 lakh hectare, while that of coarse cereals to 70.69 lakh hectare from 35.20 lakh hectare in the said period. Similarly, area sown to oilseeds increased to 109.20 lakh hectare till last week from 33.63 lakh hectare in the year-ago period. Among cash crops, the area under cotton increased significantly to 91.67 lakh hectare from 45.85 lakh hectare, while that of sugarcane area rose marginally to 50.62 lakh hectare from 49.86 lakh hectare in the said period. However, area coverage under jute and Mesta remained lower at 5.89 lakh hectare till last week as against 6.80 lakh hectare in the year-ago, the data showed. According to the IMD forecast, India is going to receive below than normal rainfall this year. In fact, the monsoon started with a delay of a week. However, it was above 4.6% normal in July. Most parts received more than 42% rainfall than normal in the last seven days of July. The affected crops would be rice, food grains, oilseeds, and pulses, as their plantation are significantly low. Farmers could sow only around 304 lakh hectares of total foodgrains up to 19 July. This is 57 lakh hectare lower than the corresponding week. As of now, India is staring at high food inflation. “The retail inflation in the food components for June 2019 has risen to 13-months high and weak progress going ahead could push food inflation higher. Also, wholesale food inflation (YoY) for June 2019 continues to remain high at close to 7%,” according to Credit Rating Agency, CARE. But there are a few chances of a turnaround. The southwest monsoon, which is below last year's average, has started picking up. Farmers are now staring eagerly at the skies to plant their kharif crops albeit late, if there is a good spell of rain. Monsoon is a key driver of agriculture in India, as it depends on it for water needs. India's monsoon accounts for 70% of the annual rainfall. This year, the rains were 19% lower than the average rainfall of 384.7 mm during the same period last year. The government is doing its part to support farmers. It is increasing the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for notified Kharif crops. Pulsating effect The possibility of increased food inflation couldn’t have come at a bad time. Last week, the wholesale prices of pulses have gone up by 4-5%. The retail market will remain unaffected so far. The Food Ministry has created a buffer stock of 'arhar' ('tur' or pigeon pea) of 14 lakh tonnes. While the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) has stored 20 lakh tonnes, which is a key part of India’s ‘square meals’. The government also increased the minimum support price of Tur dal by Rs 125 to Rs 5,800 per quintal in the first week of July. Similarly, the guaranteed remuneration for 'moong' and 'urad' was hiked also hiked by ₹75 to Rs 7,050 per quintal and by Rs 100 to Rs 5,700 per quintal, respectively. A good monsoon soothes not only farmers but the economy and markets too. This is in line with the lower end of the forecast range (92-108%) for the month provided in the Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD’s) report released in May 2022. Sugarcane and jute are fine but rice and cereal coverage lags Since the forecast is correct at the lower end, crop sowing patterns are affected and the much expected bumper crop might not come to be. Rice and cereal sowing has been much lower than expected. Kharif sowing in general has declined 5.3% on a yearly basis as on July 1, 2022. “While roughly 96-97% of last year’s area has been covered for sugarcane, and jute and mesta as on July 1, 2022, it is moderate in the range of 20-24% in the case of oilseeds, coarse cereals and pulses, followed by a modest 10.3% coverage for rice,” said the report by ICRA. The report mentions that with an uneven start to the monsoon season, Kharif acreage lagged the year-ago level by a significant 24%, as on June 24, 2022. Another concern is labour shifting back to urban centres with a revival in service sector demand, which impacts the availability of manpower in the rural areas to till the land. “Also, the availability of fertilizers poses a concern, posing a downside to acreage,” added the report. Sowing can pick up if monsoon progresses well However, the IMD expects monthly rainfall in July 2022 over the country as a whole to be normal. Following heavy rains in the third week of June, sowing of kharif crops picked up pace in the last week of the month. “Typically, sowing gathers steam in July, so the lagging pace of Kharif acreage can be partly made up if the monsoon progresses well through the next month,” said a report by ICRA. June witnessed erratic rainfall as many states received deficit rains. Over 30 large reservoirs across India have not just less water compared to last year, but far less compared to the average of the last 10 years.
