After facing significant <keyword id="20192095" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flight-disruptions" source="keywords">flight disruptions</keyword> recently, <keyword id="21269688" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vistara-CEO" source="keywords">Vistara CEO</keyword> <keyword id="20128232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vinod-Kannan" source="keywords">Vinod Kannan</keyword> on Thursday told the airline staff that the "worst is behind us" and operations have already stabilised. Pilot woes have forced the <keyword id="21105887" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Group-airline" source="keywords">Tata Group airline</keyword> to temporarily cut down capacity by 10 per cent or 25-30 flights daily. While acknowledging that things should have been planned better, Kannan said it has been a "learning experience". He also said it has been a challenging start to the new financial year and the airline faced significant operational disruption from March 31 to April 2. "The anxiety and frustration felt by our customers was matched in even measure to the pain that all of us felt in seeing our much-loved brand drawing negative commentary from various quarters... I assure you that the worst is behind us, and we have already stabilised our operations, with our on-time performance (OTP) increasing to 89 per cent on 9 April 2024 (second highest among all Indian airlines)," he said in a message to the staff. The full-service carrier has around 6,500 people, including about 1,000 pilots. In the wake of the disruptions, the top management of the airline had held a virtual meeting with the pilots. One of the reasons for the disruptions was also that some section of pilots reporting sick to protest against the new contract that will result in pay revision. According to Kannan, there were a multitude of reasons for the disruptions, including ATC delays, bird hits, and maintenance activities early last month. "We were stretched in our pilot rosters and there was not enough resilience to withstand injects that we would otherwise have weathered. We could and should have planned better, and this has been a learning experience for us which we will review thoroughly," the <keyword id="20018887" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vistara" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Vistara" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Vistara">Vistara</keyword> chief said. Most of the cancellations were in the domestic network and the carrier is working on plans for May and beyond. "While the events of the last week may seem like a setback, the hallmark of our organisation has always been that we have bounced back from tough situations ' and emerged stronger. "... I trust each of you to continue to put in all efforts to ensure that we do not let our brand, and our customer, down," Kannan said. As we emerge from this difficult phase, he said it is this commitment to being a customer-oriented airline that will help it bounce back stronger. The airline has also reached out to customers impacted by the cancellations and delays over the affected period. "We have provided the necessary compensation as per the regulatory mandate, and have also offered additional service recovery vouchers for passengers whose flights were significantly delayed," the Vistara chief said. The carrier has 70 aircraft in its fleet and is to operate more than 300 flights daily in the ongoing summer schedule. "Dealing with disappointed customers is never easy but amidst all the chaos, we have received feedback on how some of you went beyond the call of duty to assist our customers to the extent possible," Kannan said and expressed gratitude to the pilots for cooperating and stepping up to support operations.

The <keyword id="19924335" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-group" source="keywords">Tata Group</keyword> airline cancelled around 26 flights on Wednesday, the sources in the know said. With a section of pilots reporting sick to protest against the revised pay structure, <keyword id="20018887" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vistara" source="keywords">Vistara</keyword> cancelled over 100 flights in the last two days and aviation regulator <keyword id="19899185" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dgca" source="keywords">DGCA</keyword> has asked the carrier to submit a daily report on the cancellations and delays. The sources said top officials of Vistara, including CEO <keyword id="20128232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vinod-kannan" source="keywords">Vinod Kannan</keyword>, held a virtual meeting with pilots to discuss their problems. Officials of human resources among other departments attended the meeting. There was no official statement from Vistara on the meeting with the pilots. Flight operations are returning to normalcy and the number of flights cancellations has come down, the sources said. On issues related to rostering and stretched working hours, the airline officials have assured the pilots that they will be sorted out by May, the sources said. They also claimed that the current situation was mainly due to higher utilisation of the available pool of pilots. Vistara, which is in the process of getting merged with <keyword id="19896871" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-india" source="keywords">Air India</keyword>, has around 1,000 pilots, including about 200 who are at various stages of training. In the summer schedule that started from March 31, the airline is to operate a little over 300 flights daily.

Vistara cancels 26 flights, holds meeting with pilots to address issues

Full-service carrier <keyword id="2467342" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vistara" source="Orion">Vistara</keyword> will continue to expand and expects to have a total of 70 planes by mid-2024, its chief <keyword id="7656482" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="vinod-kannan" source="Orion">Vinod Kannan</keyword> said on Tuesday. The airline, a joint venture between <keyword id="46894" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata-sons" source="Orion">Tata Sons</keyword> and Singapore Airlines, reported an operating profit for the first time since its inception in the three months that ended December 2022. By the middle of next year, <keyword id="106910" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kannan" source="Orion">Kannan</keyword> said it will have a total of 70 aircraft, including 7 Boeing 787s. Out of the total 70 planes, there will also be 10 A321s and 53 A320 neos, the Vistara CEO said at a briefing. Among the 53 A320 neos, 10 planes will have all economy class and the rest will have three classes. Currently, the airline has a fleet of 53 aircraft. "We will continue to expand... more international routes (will be added)," Kannan said. Without disclosing the exact profit figure in the December quarter, the airline also said it crossed the USD 1 billion revenue mark and remained EBITDA positive in the current fiscal year. Vistara to have 70 planes in fleet by mid-2024: CEO Vinod Kannan

The airline crossed the $1 billion revenue mark and remained EBITDA positive in the current fiscal year and reported break-even for the first time in the quarter. Vistara on Monday said that it delivered remarkable results for the first time since its inception in 2013. The airline achieved its highest-ever domestic market share of 10.4 per cent in July 2022 and maintained its position as the second largest domestic airline in India since then, flying more than 11 million passengers in the calendar year 2022. Vistara also registered an 11 per cent year-on-year growth in the member base for its frequent flyer program, Club Vistara. Vistara grew its international network by over 180 per cent in 2022, by adding seven additional routes including three new destinations (Jeddah, Abu Dhabi and Muscat). It also grew its domestic network by over 50 per cent, by adding six new routes including two new destinations (<keyword id="6361828" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="coimbatore" source="Orion">Coimbatore</keyword> and Jaipur). For the quarter that ended December 2022, the airline grew its capacity by 37 per cent and passengers by 47 per cent compared to the same period last year. The airline recorded the second-highest on-time performance at four key metros and over 85 per cent domestic load factor for most of the year in 2022. This year, Vistara became the only Indian airline to be featured in Skytrax's list of the World's Top 20 airlines. Satya Raghavan, Entertainment Head, Youtube India spills the beans on what videos the country likes to watch

The <keyword id="6354731" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="State-Bank-Of-India">State Bank of India</keyword> (SBI) Managing Director (MD) and <keyword id="2426526" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="VG-Kannan">VG Kannan</keyword> has said that the five <keyword id="1250737" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="associate-banks">associate banks</keyword> of SBI do not need any additional capital in this financial year as the credit growth is low. “As of now, we are comfortable in terms of capital. No plans of raising funds as of now. There is no credit growth in the market,” he said. 
 
Kannan, who is also the group executive for SBI associates and subsidiaries, added that the that the five associates — State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Patiala, State Bank of Travancore, State Bank of Hyderabad and State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur — would collectively require a capital of about Rs 30,000 crore in the next five years. 
 He further said that bond markets and money markets have taken account of a rate cut by the <keyword id="6354335" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> already and are moving accordingly at present. “There’s a lot of liquidity in the system and market feels that inflation has also appeared to be benign. So bond markets have factored in an interest rate cut. Deposit rates are coming down. Rates on commercial papers have come down,” he said.

Vistara is a joint venture between <keyword id="19924335" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Group" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Tata Group" meta.hostid="346" meta.entityid="Tata Group">Tata Group</keyword> and Singapore Airlines. Air India is owned by Tata Group. "Starting 03 September 2024, customers will, progressively, no longer be able to make bookings with Vistara for travel on or after 12 November 2024," Vistara said in a release on Friday. Thereafter, Vistara aircraft will be operated by Air India and bookings for the routes operated by these planes will be redirected to Air India's website. "Vistara will continue to take bookings and operate flights as usual till 11 November 2024," the release said. The merger of Vistara with Air India was announced in November 2022 and post-completion of the deal, Singapore Airlines will have a 25.1 per cent stake in Air India. Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan said the merger is about offering passengers more choice with a larger fleet and a wider network while elevating the overall travel experience. "Cross-functional teams from Air India and Vistara have been working together for many months to make the transition of aircraft, flying crew, ground-based colleagues and, most importantly, our valued customers, into the new Air India as seamless as possible," Air India CEO and MD Campbell Wilson said. In a separate release, Air India welcomed the Union Cabinet's approval for the foreign direct investment by Singapore Airlines in the airline. "This is an important milestone that facilitates the merger process between Vistara and Air India, and the broader transformation of the Air India Group," it said.
