Eight snacks Indians love

The <keyword id="6358190" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nitish-Kumar">Nitish Kumar</keyword> government today decided to impose 13.5 per cent tax on <keyword id="145850" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="luxury-items">luxury items</keyword> including sweets priced more than Rs 500 a kg and mosquito repellant among others to mop up additional revenue for carrying development work. 
 
Decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of state cabinet presided over by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in Patna. 
 
Briefing about cabinet decisions, Principal Secretary, Cabinet Coordination Department, Brajesh Mehrotra told reporters that 13.5 per cent tax would be imposed on sweets priced more than Rs 500 a kg. 
 
He said 13.5 per cent tax would be taken on salty items like <keyword id="83759" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="samosa">samosa</keyword>, kachauri and branded namkin among others. 
 
Sale of all kind of UPS would attract 13.5 per cent tax, Mehrotra said, adding, similar rate of tax would be imposed on auto parts and battery parts. 
 
Sand, cosmetic items, scent and hair oil would also attract 13.5 per cent tax, he added. 
 
The Bihar cabinet put its seal of approval on 23 proposals of different departments. 
 
The cabinet decided to waive off entertainment tax on the movie "Chalk N Duster" which gives a strong social message. 
 
The Nitish Kumar cabinet also decided to consider in future on providing Non Professional Allowance to doctors and those in teaching faculty in medical colleges and super speciality hospitals in a bid to ban their private practise.

New Delhi, Candidates in Punjab's Jalandhar can spend Rs 15 for a cup of tea and the same price for a samosa they offer to people during public meetings and campaign trails in the <keyword id="19895394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="keywords">Lok Sabha</keyword> elections. However, those in Madhya Pradesh's Mandla can spend Rs 7 for a cup of tea and another Rs 7.50 for a piece of samosa, considered a staple snack in many parts of the country. With polls to elect the 18th Lok Sabha approaching, district poll panels are fixing the rates for expenses as part of the election expenditure monitoring process. The candidates will have to manage their expenditure within the prescribed limit. These rate cards often become a subject of "meme-fest" on social media about the prices not being in sync with the current inflation level. In most states, including Andhra Pradesh, the expenditure ceiling for a Lok Sabha candidate is set at Rs 95 lakh. However, in Arunachal Pradesh, Goa and Sikkim, the limit is slightly lower at Rs 75 lakh per candidate. Similarly, for Union territories, the expenditure ceiling ranges from Rs 75 lakh to Rs 95 lakh per candidate, depending on the region. In Jalandhar, chole bhature has been capped at Rs 40 while mutton and chicken have been priced at Rs 250 and 500 per kg respectively. Desserts like dhodha (Rs 450 per kg) and ghee pinni (Rs 300 per kg) are also on the menu besides <keyword id="20350738" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lassi" source="keywords">lassi</keyword> and nimbu pani priced at Rs 20 and 15 per glass respectively. The list has a wider spread of non-vegetarian items with duck and pork priced at Rs 300 and Rs 400 per kg respectively. Chicken (broiler) and fish like rohu, mrigal and sareng, are also on the list. In Chennai, the price of tea has been raised from Rs 10 to Rs 15 and coffee from Rs 15 to Rs 20, while the rate of chicken biryani has been reduced from Rs 180 to Rs 150 per packet compared to 2019. In the expenditure card for <keyword id="20035063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gautam-buddha-nagar" source="keywords">Gautam Buddha Nagar</keyword> (Noida/Greater Noida), vegetarian thali comes for Rs 100, a samosa or a cup of tea for Rs 10, kachori for Rs 15, a sandwich for Rs 25, and a kilogram of jalebi for Rs 90 per kg. <keyword id="20009826" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="north-goa" source="keywords">North Goa</keyword> candidates can have batata vada on menu at a cost of Rs 15, same as that for a samosa. The rate cards have also prescribed the ceiling on rates for hiring of different vehicles for campaigning right from a Tata Safari or Scorpio to a Honda City or Ciaz or a bus to ferry to public to rally grounds. Rates have also been set for rose garlands, marigold garlands and bouquet by some poll panels while some have included heads like party merchandise including caps and flags. The rate cards also have an list of permissible rates for hiring venues and accommodation. The expenditure includes the spend for public meetings, rallies, advertisements, hoardings, pamphlets, flexis, campaign material and all other election-related work. At present, there is a ceiling on campaigning funds for individual candidates in the electoral fray but no cap on the money political parties can spend for electioneering. According to the revised guidelines issued by the ECI, the maximum permissible expenditure for campaigning in a Lok Sabha constituency varies across different states and Union territories. Section 77 (1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 says candidates are expected to keep an account of expenditure incurred on the elections from the "date on which he has been nominated" till the "date of declaration of the result". Polling for the 543 Lok Sabha seats will be held in seven phases, starting with 102 in the first phase on April 19. The votes will be counted on June 4.

Traders' body <keyword id="76562" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="confederation-of-all-india-traders" source="Orion">Confederation of All India Traders</keyword> (<keyword id="853920" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="cait" source="Orion">CAIT</keyword>) has drawn Union Health Minister <keyword id="2607815" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="mansukh-mandaviya" source="Orion">Mansukh Mandaviya</keyword>'s attention towards a draft notification issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> (FSSAI) for the printing of Indian Nutrition Rating (INR) on food packets as part of a labelling exercise with healthy food items getting a higher rating. In a letter, CAIT said that the proposed rules have not taken into account the ground reality of the food trade and various parameters of spending of the consumers. "This move undoubtedly looks to be logical and has been brought with a good intention to ensure quality and nutrified food to the people of India. However, the proposed rules have not taken into account the ground reality of the food trade and various parameters of spending of the consumers," the letter read. CAIT has claimed that the said rules are an attempt to run the food trade with one stick though India is a land of great diversity. "The food trade in India is carried by major companies on the one side but largely crores of small Halwai, food operators, Sweet &amp; Namkeen makers and others conduct their food business activities catering to the requirement of about 80% population of the country," it added. It said that food choices differ from state to state. For example, in Delhi, the people like chat pakori, kachori etc but on the contrary, the people of Gujarat prefer farsan, people of MP have a great choice towards local produced namkeen, people of Maharashtra love eating Pav Bhaji and people of South India have altogether different choices. Notably, these items are largely available in packing. These items are famous because of their very different and special kind of recipes and these all have different nutritional values. These and many other large items are made depending upon the taste of the people. "Any legislation or regulation which may be drafted to regulate them with one yardstick will end with the closure of these large number of small sweet and namkeen manufacturers traditionally known as Halwai and Bakers which will further result into unemployment of a large number of workers who work with these small Halwai and sweet namkeen manufacturers," it added. "We request your good self to kindly consider the above submissions made by us. As the world's largest catering facility, they run 24-7, cooking up every snack, dessert, and main dish eaten by the airline's 55 million passengers a year.And these travelers eat a lot. In 2018, Emirates passengers downed 72 million bread rolls, over 134,000 pounds of strawberries, 414,000 pounds of salmon, and more than 3 million pounds of potatoes.So how does the world's largest flying restaurant feed hungry passengers aboard nearly 200,000 flights a year?Well, before any cooking can even start, everything has to be unloaded off incoming flights. Plates, trays, trolleys, you name it. They're all dropped in the ground floor of the facility to be cleaned. Dishes are separated into categories and sent through industrial-sized warewashing machines. On average, the facility handles about 3 million pieces of tableware a day.Those trolleys that bring you drinks during your flight are also cleaned here. Then they're loaded up onto the building's mile-and-a-half-long monorail to be taken upstairs. This system is how massive amounts of inventory are moved safely through the building. The monorail has pickup and drop-off points at multiple locations on every floor.Upstairs is where the cooking takes off. First, in the cold kitchen, all of the sandwiches and appetizers are prepped and plated. Because the different cabins have specific menus, appetizers and sandwiches for first and business class are prepared on one side of the kitchen, while those for economy are prepared on the other. Sandwiches are sliced and stacked and then fed through the flow-wrapping machine to keep the bread fresh until it's unwrapped aboard the plane.Now, on to the main kitchen, where they're whipping up the hot food. The kitchen's broken down by four food regions: Asian, Sub-Continent, European, and Middle Eastern. Emirates' 1,800 chefs from around the world develop 1,300 different menus a month. They cover the culinary gamut of every destination Emirates flies to.Whenever you're aboard an Emirates flight, the meal you're served will be inspired by the region of your arrival destination. And with over 150 destinations in 85 different countries, well, that's a lot of region-specific meals.So if you're headed to France, you'll get a croissant in the morning. Flying to India? You'll most likely get a crisp kachori. Stopping off in Japan? How about some soba or a bento box? Emirates says they want to welcome travelers home or give new visitors a first taste of the region's food.So what's Emirates' specialty dish welcoming passengers to their hub of Dubai? The Emirati Arabic mezze selection with sticky pudding. The hot kitchen is where region-specific dishes like the mezze take form. Chefs mix big vats of vegetables, grill lines of lamb chops, and top rows of dishes with garnishes. Each plate has to taste and look exactly the same.It's at this point that all of the hot dishes head to the blast chiller. They have to be cooled down to the perfect food-safe temperature.The last kitchen is for all us sugar lovers: the dessert room. Cakes, pastries, and cookies are all individually mixed, piped, dipped, and baked here. The facility specializes in Arabic sweets, made in-house.The coolest part? The hydro processor, a high-powered water laser that cuts perfectly precise slices of cake.Finally, the assembly room. This is where all the pieces converge onto one tray. It's also where every meal gets a day code printed on it. It's in UV ink, so as a passenger, you won't actually see it, but it helps Emirates track the life of each dish. That way, they're sure they're not serving flyers any spoiled food.This is also where salads and fruit plates are packaged up. Silverware and dishes are prepared, and all incoming meals are assembled onto trays exactly as we'd see them as passengers aboard the flight.Those trays are loaded back into the trolleys that take another spin on that monorail to the ground floor.Back downstairs, the trolleys are packed into awaiting high-loader trucks.
